Winter fishing - everything about fishing in winter

Winter fishing on first ice

The first ice (also: first ice, first ice ) becomes a long-awaited and joyful event for many fishermen.
The start of ice fishing is preceded by a long and painstaking preparation of gear, equipment and additional accessories. Winter fishing has its own interesting and exciting moments. All the gear is close in front of your eyes, every touch of the fish is transmitted to the bite alarm. But for fishing to be successful, a special approach to preparing clothes, gear, and special accessories is required.

Preparation and Safety

The first ice, along with joy and good mood, also brings hidden danger to life and health to fishermen. No fish is worth the risk of falling through the ice. And if this happens at a depth of 1-1.5 m, then the person may get away with a cold. But if the ice does not hold up at a depth of more than 2 m or on a river with a current, then the fisherman’s life will be in the balance. And here a lot will depend on the efficiency of the person who failed, the availability of special devices, as well as on quick help from fellow hobbyists.

The main point when winter fishing on first ice is compliance with basic safety rules.

  1. You can plan fishing when the ice thickness is at least 7-10 cm. Even an ice shell of less thickness can withstand the weight of an adult, but on a reservoir, and especially on a river, the ice is not uniform.
  2. Fisherman's clothing should be light and comfortable. Then you will be able to group and avoid falling into the water.
  3. Every ice fishing enthusiast needs to have special devices in order to cling to the edge of the ice cover. These are ordinary awl-like tools with handles that are tied to a long rope. The device is passed through the sleeves of outerwear.
  4. To reach the first ice, it is preferable to take an ice pick rather than an ice screw. An ice pick is a large chisel attached to a long handle. With this tool you can test the strength of ice while moving through dangerous areas of the reservoir.
  5. It’s better to go to the first ice with a friend to protect each other.

Choosing a safe indicator

For any experienced winter traveler, the most productive fishing is on the first ice. At this time, not all the fish go to wintering holes, and even a novice angler can successfully catch with a jig. However, no catch is worth risking human health. Therefore, lovers of winter fishing, never go out on the ice if its thickness does not exceed the safe value of 7 cm. At the same time, guaranteed safety appears when the ice thickness is 10 cm or more, and then precautions must be taken.

These indicators are recommended if the water in the reservoir is fresh. Therefore, it is worth considering other options:

  • If the ice thickness is about 8 cm, be sure to use skis when moving in order to distribute the load from the body over a larger area. Especially if the water area is heavily covered with snow, there may be thawed areas underneath. You won't fail on skis in such a situation.
  • If you mean moving on a snowmobile, then the ice thickness should be at least 12-15 cm.
  • In salt water or mixed with sea water, the ice should be thicker, and this figure should not be lower than 15 cm.
  • If there are children on the ice who have come to have fun skating, for such games the minimum ice thickness is 12 cm.
  • With official permission, pedestrians can cross the ice in a designated place, where the thickness reaches at least 15 cm. Outside the place of organized movement of pedestrians, you become your own responsibility - only you are responsible for your safety.
  • For road crossings, the ice thickness must be at least 30 cm - organized road crossings on ice. Such places are marked accordingly.

Gear for fishing on the first ice and expected catch

Ice fishing requires completely different gear than open water fishing. Typically, fishermen use several types of fishing rods, which are selected depending on the type of intended catch.

Float rod

Winter float tackle most often consists of an ordinary filly fishing rod and float equipment

This classic ice fishing tackle is used to catch fish species such as:

The tackle is compact and convenient; it fits in a drawer or pocket. The float rod includes:

Fishing is carried out using natural baits. The most popular of them in winter fishing is the bloodworm. One or more larvae are attached to the jig hook. The bait sinks to the bottom, and the bite is determined by the float floating in the hole. The hook is performed by moving the hand. This is important, since the fishing line used on such a fishing rod is thin, 0.08-0.12 mm. The supply of fishing line is stored on a simple inertial reel with a small drum or on the handle of a fishing rod, which is made in the form of a reel.

Tackle with jig and nod

Fishing rods for jig fishing have a miniature size and a sensitive nod

This fishing rod is in many ways similar to float tackle. The main difference is the use of a nod instead of a float. However, the nod is needed not only to determine the bite, but also to give the jig an attractive game.

With such a fishing rod, anglers hunt for:

For fishing, you can use either a jig with a nozzle or a reelless one. When using a baitless jig, the intensity of the bite will depend on the performance of the artificial bait. To perform a retrieve that is attractive to fish, it is necessary to develop uniform movements with the same amplitude. This monotonous rhythm is most often liked by fish. A bite is determined by a failure in the movement of the nod.

Sheer trolling rod

Winter fishing rod (tackle) for vertical trolling and fishing on a balance beam

A trolling rod is used to catch predatory fish from the ice. It differs from jig tackle in a more powerful and longer rod, thick fishing line and the presence of a spinner. In winter they catch with this kind of tackle:

Vertical spoons and balancers are used as artificial bait. The larger the bait, the greater the likelihood of catching a large predator.

When trolling vertically, the angler makes sharp swings of his hand, throwing the lure up. After this there is a pause, and then the cycle repeats. When working monotonously with tackle, you should not relax. A blow from a predator often rips the fishing rod out of your hand.

You can determine the moment of a bite by nodding or a piece of nipple rubber placed on the tip of the rod. It is advisable to have a reel in such a fishing rod so that when hooking a large predator you can quickly give up part of the fishing line.

Winter girders

You can catch a predator in winter using girders. In winter, this type of gear is most often used to catch:

There are many varieties of girders, the principle of operation is similar for all.

  1. A 0.2-0.4 mm fishing line is wound onto a reel or reel, a sinker and a hook are attached.
  2. The tackle is placed motionless on the ice, the live bait is placed on a hook and lowered into the water.
  3. A bite alarm in the form of a spring and a flag holds the bait in the charged position.
  4. When a predator bites, the spring straightens, signaling the angler to “work.”
  5. The fisherman only needs to successfully land the fish on the ice.

On the first ice should you go to the pond or to the river?

First of all, the ponds are covered with ice of 5-10 cm, which confidently holds a person, and only then the rivers

Ice fishing can be successful both on still bodies of water and on rivers. The difference lies in the methods of fishing and equipment of fishing rods.

In a pond, fish are evenly distributed throughout the water area. It can be caught under the shore, in the reeds, and in the depths. Since there is no current (or it is weak), the weight of jigs, sinkers and hooks is selected to a minimum. The tackle turns out to be elegant and sensitive. Fishing is possible at any time of winter, but the largest catches are on the first ice.

Fishing on the river is fraught with several difficult moments.

  • As soon as sludge begins to actively float along the river, the fisherman should visit oxbow lakes and bays. This is where almost all types of fish flock. Active fishing continues until the river bed is completely covered in ice.
  • After this the situation changes. Some representatives of the ichthyofauna return to the river, where they can be caught with different gear. Unlike lake fishing rods, river fishing gear looks more powerful and rougher.
  • To resist the current, anglers have to use heavy jigs, sinkers, use stronger fishing line, etc. On some fast rivers, fishing can be short-lived, especially during warm winters.

Return to Tenis - fishing in the first snow

In order to decide where to go fishing without spending a lot of time, it’s good to have this site and fishermen with good news from the reservoirs. I was in Tennis for the first time in September 2008. I wanted to go fishing on it from the ice.

In our fishing gang there is an activist-logistician, Petrovich, he plans and organizes all our expeditions, and in September Petrovich was involved in transporting our entire gang to Tenis - 4 people, 2 PVC under YAMAHAs and for only 50 thousand for a swamp vehicle.

But Petrovich doesn’t like winter fishing...

Well, I can organize everything myself, what’s difficult here, the swamp is frozen, the GPS will indicate the path of BEARCAT to the cart, the cart behind the TLC100, a follow-up call to a friend.

And so at 4 am we left the sleeping city. A can of energy drink and dreams of wild freedom, fresh heady wind, sparkling snow, clean and clear water took us away from the worthless bustle of the city, the crisis...

The road is shiny, icy, we don’t drive 100-120, there’s still a trailer behind us. The rustling of tires, the light of headlights from the darkness snatches signs: Chick, Kochenevo, Chulym... both, the Kruzak pulled slightly, something was wrong. Just in case I stop at the side of the road with an emergency warning light. We go out, it’s dark, we shine a flashlight, the wheel on the cart is almost on the rim, fuck... there’s a spare tire, we’re not suckers for driving without it, but here’s where the tire can unscrew the nuts, of course in the trunk filled to the very ceiling with junk. We begin to unload, putting things right on the side of the road. Ring-ding, the smell of vanilla and almonds, HENNESSY, blah!!! So we warmed up! After this, the Liter of the Absolute is carefully transferred by hand to the seat of the car. After some time, a decent pile of things forms on the side of the road, like what happens near the entrance of a house when someone moves. Here is the key, but it only fits the Kruzak and does not fit the trailer, well, it’s fucked up. Dimon tries to stop the occasional passing cars (1 every 10 minutes) early, no one is moving yet. I’m starting to get a little nervous, I wanted to get to the lake before dark. I show my nervousness by criticizing Dimon’s actions, there is no need to try to stop a VOLVO truck, they have a different size tank. It’s getting light, we’re starting to freeze, a PRADO with a trailer appears from the pre-dawn darkness, responds to the hand raised in a call for help with a right turn signal, and parks nearby on the side of the road. There is a spray bottle in an easily accessible place. There are 2 snowballs in the trailer, the guys also went on vacation, but not with fishing rods. Everything is fine again, Kargat, Barabinsk, Kuibyshev. If the N-sk - Barabinsk highway in some places shows signs of the work of the road service, then the Kuibyshev - Severnoye road service does not serve. The route to Severnoye is a broken road with crookedly laid slabs with menacingly protruding edges and oblique joints, in places asphalt crushed by the ruts of heavy timber trucks, deep potholes, the Kruzak sighed sadly after each meeting with such a sad suspension. Further to the north, the freshly fallen snow was rolled into an icy track with uneven edges; when the speed increased, I tried to throw the car or trailer in an unknown direction, so gloomily I had to drive all the way to Severny at a speed of no more than 60. Before Severny, take the turn to Alyoshinka, another 40 km. The road is a hemisphere, also icy, it is safe to drive only in the middle, I felt like a tightrope walker in real life. On the way, I noticed several traces where, by all indications, the losers were pulled out from the side of the road by an outside force.

Alyoshinka met us with a pack of village dogs of different breeds, who accompanied us for half the village, barking. To my question to Dimon in which parking lot they left the car last time, the answer was received in the form of muttering like somewhere here. I stopped right in the middle of their avenue and looked around. The houses are all gray-gray, wooden, almost identical, not distinguished by artistic and architectural sophistication, cut down according to the birch bark drawing of one architect who lived, as a stele in the middle of the village says, 100 years ago.

Blah... the parking lots are all full, like in the evening at the supermarket on Lenin Street. Half the cars are with snowballs. Still, I had to make a circle around the village to find the house, I was lucky there was one more parking space, I put it right next to Lex470 as an orphan. Short negotiations with a representative of a local business structure, consensus was found, the car was guarded, we headed out to the lake, it was getting dark. The start, the Cat’s engine growls aggressively, the adrenaline rises, I leave in an angry way with a slip, I hear the voice of an aborigine in the back about a turn... I didn’t hear the last words, screw you... we have a GPS with a track. I tumble in, here it is freedom, not yet complete but already hitting me with a stinging snowball in the face, it’s “stuffy” for me, let me take a deep breath, just to go out into the swamp. We’re not driving, we’re flying, the road is clear, I’m not worried... is there an obstacle, a fork? So what did the native say about the turn..? I take out the navigator, look at the track that was written when we rushed to Tenis in September, to the right, the track of the tank is also to the right, to the left only motorbikes, lake. On the map to the right, that's it, I'm going to the right. I didn’t drive for long, when the clearing ended, the road ended, and further through the forest there was a deep rut cut by tracked vehicles in the fall. The ruts are up to 80cm deep in places, the edges are sharp, frozen mud mixed with ice floes. The snowmobile will go right and left, thicket, if only Dimon with a chainsaw is sent forward. It was either a trophy or a trial. Dimon had to get down and walk, and I had to weigh the snowball, standing with all my weight on one side. After 30 minutes of such intense work, the thermal underwear with moisture-wicking threads stopped wicking away. We are walking clearly along the track, when is the swamp? It gets dark, another 20 minutes and the forest gives way to small bushes, reeds have appeared, well, here is the exit to the swamp. The gas, in the open, immediately felt a nasty side wind. There is not much snow in the swamp, although the hummocks have been leveled, the grass still sticks out, not to mention some small creeping gnarled bush. Not having time to cool down in the draft, we quickly ran into a small, densely growing pine forest. Driving along snowy, icy ruts is difficult, but it is possible, but how to drive if the road is chaotically sticking out broken thin pine trees interspersed with twisted, sharp, hard, resinous roots. For some reason I didn’t think in advance that the requirements for laying out a route on a tank and a snowmobile are very different. Where a wedge heel goes, a snowmobile doesn’t go and vice versa. Standing at this obstacle that is insurmountable for a snowmobile I clearly realized this. I made a decision not to follow the trail of the tank, so as not to break the snowmobile. We will lay out a route along open areas, bypassing the ryams, keep

heading in the direction of the lake. It was getting dark. For about an hour we painted arcs across the swamp, we came across the trail of Buran, our direction was the lake. On the trail for another 5 minutes, the ice of Tenis began to hum under the skis. It got dark. We started looking for huts, I remember they were visible from the water, which means to find it you have to drive along the shore. We drove off, immediately came across a healthy tank, lying -

I’m lying on my side, white panties are fluttering on the flagpole, it smells like smoke, there’s some equipment nearby, nah... Let’s move on. The hut again... The room is full of people, let's move on.

Dimon pats me on the shoulder and demands an urgent stop. What's the matter? There are no sleighs! How?!

I turn around and try to follow my trail in the snow, in places it means snow,

simply no. I turned off the GPS as soon as I got to the lake. In the sleigh all things, sleeping bags, ben-

saw, gas, etc. It’s dark, you can’t see the sleigh, and there’s also a trail from a snowmobile. I go at random, on a whim.

About 150 meters later, the headlights revealed the black silhouette of a sleigh. We are the lucky ones! Let's figure it out

what's the matter, the drawbar has unscrewed along the thread, only the eye bolt remains on the snowman's towbar.

The rod with washers and shock-absorbing springs has unscrewed and presumably should lie somewhere nearby. Let's go look. We found everything 15 m from the sled. Collected according to

we tried to screw it on, everything was clogged with snow, nah... Tomorrow morning we’ll do everything without any fuss. We knit the sleigh with a rope around the frame of the snowball.

It would be quicker to get to the hut, light the stove, and drink to your arrival.

We wander around the lake for about an hour looking for huts. They are all clumsy and crooked here,

rotten, low, cramped for 5-6 people, stoves smoke everywhere so that all the walls, clothes are leaking

they smell of smoke, and the doctor's sausage left on the table overnight turns into

in servelat. The search for an unoccupied hut with intact windows and a normal stove is taking a long time.

The north wind has long taken away all our warmth, I’m starting to get a little nervous, spend the night

I don’t want to be with strangers, although we won’t stay on the street anyway, we’ll go somewhere anyway

Let's fit in. We approach another hut, there are local motorbikes and Buran. Negotiations.

The situation is this, all the huts are occupied, we need to take care of this in advance even before leaving Novosibirsk. Let's remember Petrovich. A local says that there are a couple of free huts, one belongs to some cool non-local, the villagers are afraid to go into his hut. The second hut of foresters or rangers (I still don’t understand). Those who only come in because they are blue, those who are left in the hut they see - they either hit them or grab their guns right away. Fuck... these

blue foresters, where is the cool hut?

The hut is really good compared to all the others, it’s clean. That's it, let's stay and unload.

Something is missing... Dimon, where is the package of beer? A minute of dialogue is enough to understand

that she was left on the side of the road where the tire was being changed.

We heat the stove, the heat comes quickly, 100g, sleep.

We got up before dark, had breakfast, got ready, took a snack with us, a thermos of tea, remembered the broken cognac...

We screw the sled hook into place, fuck it... In the absence of a rigid coupling between the sled and the snowmobile, when the snowmobile was braking, the sled with the load, by inertia, crashed into the back of the snowball and broke the tail light.

Dawn finds us already on the ice, well, hello Tenis, here I am back, share your bounty with us. I try the brown ice, the thickness is 30 cm, it’s a blast.

We drill out a promising area, wet it, but they don’t respond from below. Changing decoys

and again we get wet, change the game and again no response. The weather is good, warm wind, wet snow, atmospheric pressure is falling. We change the place, go, look out for promising areas, remember where we fished in the fall, what depths the echo sounder showed.

The lake is generally shallow, on average 2.5 m. When the wind starts to blow, it quickly becomes agitated, and the bite immediately dies out. The lake is open on all sides, the wind is constant

effectively accelerates a steep, short, powerful wave. I myself saw here how two oars were blown out of sight by the wind in 5 minutes. Our PVC was flooded with water,

we went on propellers to the leeward shore, hid behind bushes or ryam, there was no

comfortable. A local guide who was with us in September says that a sudden strong wind that accelerates the wave to whitecaps is a common occurrence for

Tenisa. The locals on the cauldrons under the whirlwinds immediately rush to the shore.

We stop in the bay, in the summer there were water lilies here, we drill. I punch it all at once

diagonally, 21 moon. Dimon is lazy only for 7 moons, all under the deep shore. Through

1.5 hours I have 1 perch 300g, 1 shuronut, not food size, released as unnecessary.

Dimon 2 screw nuts were also released. Searching again, drilling, soaking, pumping. By the evening

about 3kg of perch, 200-400g, for two, not a single normal pike. Drive-up

we approached the fishermen with a better result than ours. Two guys have been in Kemerovo for a week now

live, got out 1 bag of change for two, all 100-200g. They sit on a marmy.

The next morning, we get up early. Blizzard, wet snow. It had just dawned - there was already traffic on the lake: three motorboats, each with 2-3 people, 4 village Burans (one was riding

2 people with hooked wooden sleighs with 6 people), and about 7 more bourgeois snowmen

everyone with a sleigh, why about 7 because it was the hardest to count them, flying around the lake

like at orienteering competitions, back and forth. And also a caterpillar all-terrain vehicle, it didn’t go out on the ice, there were about 10 fishermen, they walked on foot on the lake. Someone with

went north to south, someone has already gone and is returning to the northern part of the lake, someone

I moved to the eastern part, it’s cool, the engine makes me happy. We don't make sudden movements

We are methodically working out the southeastern part.

By lunchtime, people from the mainland began to arrive at the lake: 2 motorboats and 2 Buranas

with freshly shaved fishermen still smelling of the city. New types have also appeared

bourgeois technology, self-propelled, without guides, like us.

We look towards our hut - he’s rushing alone. It pulls up, gets stuck, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, well, I say

Dimon needs to go. We're approaching. The guy carries his things into the hut. Hello. He answers the greeting with a question like who they are and where they are from, and I answer that we live here.

He answered no, you won’t live here anymore, I’m the owner of the hut and I’m evicting you. Dimon to him

like show documents confirming your identity and ownership of

real estate. A strong, tall man weighing 100-110 kg, with a big-toed character, us

not afraid. Without finishing the dialogue, he goes into the hut and comes out with a rifle bike in his hand. I’m starting to doubt whether I chose the right hut, maybe this is the hut of the eternally blue foresters, or maybe

This is an aborigine who confused something, in general, negotiations. We ended up going

We'll continue fishing and spend the night here. They remembered Petrovich again. The movement on the lake continues, some pretzels rode on a snowfield through freshly drilled

holes.

In the fall there were the same number of people, there were people on the left side, and on the right side and in front, everyone was on

distance, like in Spirino - there are a lot of boats but no one bothers each other.

The result of 2 days is about 5 kg of perch for two, on average 200-400 g and 2 pike 1 kg, 1.2 kg. Tomorrow

last day of fishing.

The overall result of the trip: we caught about 20 kg of perch for two, this is normal for others and that

less. No one has seen a large pike, ours is the largest at 1.8 kg.

If we drove from Aleshinka to the lake along the tank road for more than 2 hours, then back

on the winter road in 30 minutes. We were thrown along a tank road in the fall, so we recorded the track.

And in winter, everyone takes a different road through the swamp, tanks don’t go through it, but it’s a blast on a snowmobile, there’s no kale.

Will I go to Tennis again, yes, but after I visit other interesting bodies of water,

and how long it will take me 5, 10 years... who knows. The ways of the Lord are not confessable.

But Petrovich doesn’t like winter fishing in vain.

Finding a fishing spot by first ice

Very often fish can be found exactly in those places where they were caught on a float or spinning rod from the shore in the water

An important point when fishing on the first ice is the correct choice of place. The fact is that after the ice cover is established, the fish get sick for some time. This is another compelling argument in favor of the later appearance of fishermen on the ice. Schools of fish occupy areas of the reservoir with favorable temperature and oxygen parameters of the water. The movements of fish in winter are quite slow and short. She saves the supply of nutrients accumulated in the fall and tries to feed near the chosen site.

Having found places where winter fish accumulate, you can hope for an excellent catch.

A week after freeze-up, acclimatization of underwater inhabitants occurs. At this time, there is an active bite of hungry perches, pikes and roaches.

The best places for fishing in early winter are:

  • thickets of reeds and reeds;
  • holes near the coastline;
  • depth changes;
  • shoal islands surrounded by deep areas;
  • ditches and creeks;
  • stuck areas.

When searching for a promising fishing spot, anglers usually make up to 10 holes in one direction. Moving with a fishing rod from hole to hole, not only the presence of fish is determined, but also the bottom topography.

Catching perch with balance beams - a hit parade of the most catchy lures and a guide to fishing techniques.

Perch with a jig - fishing technique, correct tackle and finding a fishing spot.

Winter pike with spoons - which spoons are catchy at the beginning of winter, and which ones in the dead of winter, we correctly find and catch the predator.

The first ice becomes an interesting and productive time when you can get an excellent fish bite. You just need to remember about safety precautions on thin ice, and also remember to release small and excess fish back into the reservoir. Then you will be able to enjoy excellent fishing at the beginning of winter more than once.

The life of a fisherman

Morning... at about 7 o'clock I receive a text message asking if I'm going to go fishing. It's time to get up and get ready. Outside the window there is the first snow, there is not much of it, but it is there and that means it will be very cold, and today a very weak wind of 4-5 meters is expected. I get ready and remember about the gloves. I have special ones from China for such cases. I took out the steel spikes from the shoe covers back in the spring, when they were driving to the dock. And now I'm ready. Lekha arrives and we head to the pond. They swam in, the fish is silent... generally silent, not even a small fish is walking. Lekha set up the circles and we swam in search of the predator. But the predator was silent. Did NOT chase or peck. The baits were all silent((((I knew that the pike was standing at the bottom along the riverbed, but I couldn’t provoke it to attack((((Even relaxing the hoof with an additional tee with its wounded game could not force the pike to bite(((( I got a “reaper” wob that was ideal for the conditions, clean water, a depth of 3-3.5 meters and a passive fish. But the reaper, with its twitch extremely slow play at the bottom, was not able to revive the pike (((((((((((( That's just ZERO!!!! We sailed to other places in more open areas. Then Lech went on business, leaving me alone in his boat. And I swam. I remembered about the underwater hump and the wind would carry me along it. I installed a Chinese wobble Wlure C549 in 39 color, bright for perch. Well, I've caught perch before and now I decided to try it. I'm swimming slowly. And then I notice the blow of O_o and something small is floating under the water and doesn't want to rise to the surface. Well, I think it's a small evil one. Now I'll pick it up, I pick it up, and there is a perch)) such a good perch))) He walked a little and was caught with a landing net)))

And he sat so weakly that at least he didn’t start tearing him out of the water))))

The hillock ended and I decided to return to its beginning and again drift with the wind along it. I swam and swam and still decided to drop anchor and wait and fish slowly. I tried all sorts of different baits, as well as rattlin, but there were no bites. He weighed anchor and continued drifting along the hillock. And near the place where I caught the perch there was another blow and judging by the resistance it was clearly a toothy one))) The pike resisted, but there was no chance at all.

She sat on the front hook and sat well. And all the stray items for the pikes remained in other clothes ((((I had to pick at the answer))) But I still got it without incident)))

Then came the hours without biting (((The fish were silent, but still I saw the pike coming out behind the fry, but it stood deep in the grass and it was not possible to lure it out.

Then Lekha arrived and we swam to look for the predator. We sailed to the next point and began to throw bait, but the fish were silent. Then I took out the anchor and our boat went with the wind, the bait was led along the dump and through the tubercle. And now Lekha got a peck. The spin is light with a braided line of 0.08 and without a leash O_o Lekha slowly leads it, I’m already catching fish with a landing net))) The wind carries us and brings us to the grass and the pike, apparently seeing it in the muddy water, rushes there. They cling to the grass and stand still. Then the pike comes out and I catch it with a net))) There is another one))

Caught on a Chinese helicopter number , which was later torn off (((

Then we swam to a hillock, where I caught perch and pike. I caught another perch near the boat, but it was small and that’s all. The fish didn't bite anymore and we started getting ready to go home.

I weigh the perch.

580 grams)))) I haven’t caught these here for a long time)))

Photo for memory))

My evil one.

The catch was...

In principle, the fishing turned out to be very interesting, even though it was cold outside (but not for me, I would have been very happy) and the fish almost didn’t bite, i.e. All I had was 3 bites and Lech had one and we caught all the fish)))

What kind of fish is caught on the first ice?

The first ice brings fishing on the first ice. It begins with the onset of cold weather on frozen bodies of water. Fishing is rarely unsuccessful. Before wintering, the fish have become hungry and greedily grab any bait. This period lasts approximately two weeks. At this time, in different regions of the country, you can catch the following fish with different gear:

A successful fisherman can catch both small bleak and large taimen, reaching a weight of 60 kg.

Fishing on the first ice - when can you fish?

When winter comes, rivers and lakes are covered with the first ice. But you can’t fish on the ice at this time; it’s better to wait until it becomes thicker, about 5-6 cm. But then, it’s quite possible to go out on it.

Winter fishing requires you to constantly monitor the weather. After all, even short thaws noticeably weaken the ice cover. It is dangerous to walk on the first ice (thin ice) both in groups and even alone, without having a strong rope 10 - 15 m long. In search of a place for fishing, the rope is carried by the one walking behind (the trailing one), and the one in front constantly checks the ice with an ice pick (a type of crowbar). ), avoids suspicious places, including areas with cracks and water spills on the ice surface.

Ice with freshly fallen snow is especially dangerous for those who like winter fishing on the first ice. Places near thickets of reeds, sedges, and flooded bushes are also unsafe for fishing—near them the ice is usually thinner. If you feel that the ice is cracking and settling, stop immediately and, with an ice pick or ice auger in your hands, move back with a sliding step along the path you have already traveled. And then choose a different direction or return to shore.

How to find fish sites at the beginning of winter

Fishing at the beginning of winter is characterized by increased bite. But the ice cover at this time is thin and weak. It prevents you from getting closer to the point of a successful catch. On small lakes and ponds, ice cover grows faster than on rivers with flow. Winter fishing on first ice begins near coastal areas and creeks, protected from the winds. There the first layer of strong cover appears.

But the fish do not like these places and are looking for warmer water. She chooses a place on the border between ice areas and open water. In this place the ice is thin and you can easily fall under it.

You can look for fish sites in snags, near a wall of reeds, on the edge of dark ice. For this purpose, you will have to drill many holes and use different fishing gear. If the fish does not bite within two or three casts of the gear, it is recommended to make an ice hole in another place. This is the only way to find a good fishing spot.

When searching for a fishing spot, you should avoid dangerous areas, which include:

  • stream mouths;
  • places with protruding vegetation;
  • places with fast currents.

It's better to stay in shallow water than to get caught in the ice. While searching, you can use an echo sounder, which will show the presence and depth of fish.

On the first snow. Fishing in November

Fishing Academy

November, in our climatic conditions, is a time of extremely unstable weather and the same changeable mood of fishermen. This month is a kind of transition to winter... Often in the first half of November there are prolonged rains, which, when the sky clears, are replaced by light frost. And then, along the shores of small lakes, ponds, oxbow lakes and slowly flowing rivers, edges are formed, which with each frosty night capture an increasingly larger area of the water surface.

But since light frosts quite often give way to warm weather during the day, the resulting ice either completely disappears or turns into a thin transparent film, lightly powdered with freshly fallen snow. On the reservoirs of the Leningrad region it happens that the weather is stable throughout November, and therefore there is no real freeze-up. Or suddenly it is formed, and then just as suddenly destroyed. And fishermen have to be patient, waiting for the time when strong, and therefore reliable ice is established. This is the time of the so-called off-season. Here it’s time to remember the advice of the sage Mark Twain, who suggested: “If you don’t like the weather, then you have to wait.” Our great Russian fisherman L.P. Sabaneev advised using the off-season to make or repair sleds, on which, as he writes: “...For winter fishing you have to carry a lot of things with you and, moreover, very heavy ones, such as an ice pick for cutting holes, an oak bucket, a long pole used to stir up water, which attracts fish... It is also very useful to take with you an iron bucket with coals, so that in case of severe frost you can light a fire in it and warm yourself up.”

It is clear that in modern times it is unlikely that any angler will take full advantage of these tips. It is much more effective to use the off-season period to check and prepare all gear for winter fishing, as well as to make spinners, jigs, jigs and other necessary fishing accessories. It would be a good idea to think in advance about possible routes on the reservoirs where you intend to fish. As temperatures drop, the activity of most fish decreases significantly. Schools of fish gradually move away from the shores to deeper places, or even go to wintering pits. Therefore, it becomes increasingly difficult to catch fish. Although, if you know the bottom topography of a particular reservoir (and therefore the catchable places), with the appropriate gear, bait and bait, you can quite count on success.

Fishing on first ice can be especially successful. First of all, the perch and ruff brethren can please you. These fish quite often gather in shallow water near the edge of the grass. They can be caught using a jig with burdock moth larvae, caddis flies, various worms, bloodworms and even leeches attached to the hook. With sufficient skill, as well as well-chosen small lures and a certain amount of luck (what would fishing be without it!) with vertical lures you can catch medium-sized perches, roaches, white breams, silver bream, ruffes and other fish. I have seen how fishermen pulled out large pikes, perches and pike perches from depths of 8-12 meters using girders and bottoms baited with ruffs, minnows, roaches and perches. And once I witnessed how a two-kilogram burbot was caught on a donk.

However, I want to warn you right away: in no case should you think that by strictly following the above or other tips, anyone can end up with a good catch. It's not like that at all. After all, no one has canceled the popular wisdom known from time immemorial: “Without labor, you cannot pull a fish out of the pond.” This is especially true in the off-season.

In order to successfully fish in November, you must not only be a master of fishing in difficult conditions, but also be extremely careful. It takes my breath away as I watch the reckless fishermen moving across the rippling ice. After all, most often it is this kind of ice that cannot withstand the weight of a person, breaks through, and the unlucky fisherman finds himself in icy, freezing water. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to get out of water captivity safely. I strongly advise all anglers, especially beginners, to remember this and not take risks.

On the first snow. Fishing in November

Preparing for fishing on first ice

First Ice is a joyful and long-awaited event. You need to be well prepared for it. It is necessary to check clothing and shoes, gear and accessories. When going out on thin ice, you must follow safety rules.

Safety precautions

When fishing, unpleasant incidents often happen that cannot be justified by any catch. You should go fishing when the ice thickness is 7-10 cm and wear comfortable clothes. You need to have an awl or a knife or an ice pick tied to you.

Dangerous areas of ice on water bodies in winter

  • The most dangerous ice can be in the fall, when it is just beginning to form, and in the early spring, when it has already begun to melt.
  • As a rule, the ice near the banks of the river is thicker than in the middle.
  • Ice covered with a thick layer of snow or snowdrifts is especially dangerous. Under the thickness of the snow, it is almost impossible to determine the thickness of the ice.
  • No less dangerous are ice holes, ice holes, and fishing holes. Walking through such an area, you can easily and unexpectedly fall through the ice.
  • Ice becomes dangerous during periods of thaw, when it turns white and becomes loose, soft and porous. It is very dangerous to go out on such ice.
  • Quite dangerous places are located in areas where there is swampy terrain. Usually, in such areas very thin ice is possible due to the gases that are released. They seem to heat up the ice from below, so it’s better to avoid such places, even if it’s severely frosty outside.

Ice safety

Gear for fishing on the first ice and expected catch

Fishing gear should be light in weight. These can be different spinners or a balancer. The best lure is homemade. Over time it is brought to perfection. At shallow depths, a vertical spinner works well.

To catch small fish, jig tackle and a fishing rod with a nod are used. It is also used when fishing for perch. First ice is the time to use various fishing gear.

Float rod

Ice fishing requires the use of several fishing rods. Not the last place among them is the float. It consists of equipment and a filly, has a compact size, and can even fit in your pocket. The gear is used for catching bream, roach, silver bream, gudgeon, perch, and ruffe. Fishing on the first ice uses natural bait and groundbait.

Groundbait in the form of bloodworms is very common. You need to put 1-3 larvae on the hook and lower it into the water. The bite is determined by the float that floats in the hole. A hook is made with the hand.

A fishing line with a thickness of 0.08-0.12 mm is wound onto a reel located on the fishing rod. Float fishing on the first ice can bring prey in the form of large fish.

Tackle with jig and nod

In winter, jigs and nods are often used. This fishing rod looks like a float rod. The only difference is the nod, which is used instead of a float. The nod is not just a bite signal, it gives the jig additional movement. The fishing rod is used on the first ice when fishing for perch, bleak, roach, silver bream, and white bream.

The jig can be attached or unattached. The result of fishing is influenced only by the play of the jig.

Sheer trolling rod

Fishing on the first ice is also done using vertical lures. For this, a balancer or a spinner is used. The fishing rod has a longer rod and thicker line. The tackle is intended for catching trout, pike perch, perch, pike, and bream. The bait is spoons or a balancer. A large spoon can be used to catch a large predator.

When flashing, sharp swings of the hand are made. As a result, the spoon takes off from the depths and falls again. The moment of the bite is determined by the behavior of the nod. It is advisable to equip the fishing rod with a reel so that at the right time you can give the fishing line or part of it to the predator.

Winter girders

The predator is also caught using girders in winter. Pike, perch, pike perch, burbot, trout and other fish species bite on them. All available types of vents have the same operating principle. A fishing line with a thickness of 0.2-0.4 mm is wound onto the reel. A hook and sinker is attached to the end of the line. The tackle is installed on the hole, the live bait on the hook is lowered into the water. A flag serves as a bite signal. The fisherman can only wait and fish out the catch from the ice hole. You can equip the vent with your own hands and for free.

On the first snow

In the garage, captives were swimming in a spacious container - small fish that were left over from a previous fishing trip. The weather, however, was changing. The day before the first snow fell, which, in my opinion, was completely inappropriate. The temperature is about two degrees below zero.

But despite all this, I put the gear in the car, poured the water with the fish into a three-liter can and went to the mouth of the Sinaya River. Behind the farm, I turned left and drove to my favorite fishing spot. The top layer of the earth was frozen, there was no unpleasant autumn slush. On the surface lay pure snow, white as milk. Real winter! Perhaps it’s time for her to rule nature, because autumn is late. I was constantly wondering if I was going too far: should I use summer gear to catch pike with live bait in winter? And then he reassured himself: “If there’s no bite, I’ll leave right away.” The mouth was deserted. The trees and bushes have long shed their clothes. A day ago, snow five to seven centimeters thick covered the grass that was so unusual for this time in places. There are no traces of anyone around, not a soul, not a soul. It’s even somehow uncomfortable from such amazing silence. I looked into the water for several minutes. Off the banks of Sinaya and Velikaya, where there was practically no current, edges of thin ice could be seen. A thin transparent ice crust (slush) was periodically carried by the waters of both the Blue and the Great. The water level in the rivers rose by thirty centimeters. Having installed three live bait rods in turn at intervals of approximately 25, 15 and 5 meters, I sat in the car and waited. Forty minutes later, ten meters from the edge of the water, the fry ran away in different directions. “It’s a good sign,” I noted to myself, “it means predators have approached and started hunting.” Someone tapped a live bait on a distant fishing rod, but threw it away. Another half hour passed. And so the distant float, leaving a barely noticeable circle on the surface, disappeared under the water. I quickly jumped out of the cabin, took the rod and picked out the slack. A few more seconds and I was hooked. The line stretched out like a string, and a few moments later a pike weighing six hundred grams began to thrash in the snow. Not a bad start... I equipped the tackle with a fresh dace and sent it into the water at the same distance. I sat back in the cabin, started the engine and warmed up, watching the floats. Those closest to me never signaled anything to me. They circled calmly, carried away by the current. And twenty minutes later the distant one “worked” again. I carefully, so as not to slip on the snow trampled by me, approached the shore. The float did not float up. Without hesitation, he hooked and began to fish out the second predator. It turned out to be about twice the weight of the first one. I thought: “I didn’t go for nothing. And most importantly, I identified a pattern that at this time of year you can successfully fish with live bait.” The mobile phone started playing a solemn melody. It was my wife calling, asking about today’s progress. I reported to her with satisfaction the fishing situation. At this time the third bite occurred and again on the third, farthest fishing rod. I waited for a long time, expecting to hook him for sure. But as it turned out, he miscalculated. The pike somehow freed itself from the bait, and I pulled ashore the dace that had been cut by its teeth. But I didn’t really blame myself. The clock showed the time for fifteen, and having wound up my gear, I left for home, firmly deciding to come here again tomorrow. But this was not destined to happen: a powerful cyclone covered the entire region with a thick blanket of snow. The snowstorm with hurricane winds raged for another two days...

Where does the fish bite better on the first ice?

Fish bite on the first ice in any body of water. This could be a lake, pond or river. As the ice thickness increases, the perch sinks to the rough surface. It lives on the borders of ice and clean water, in algae. Perch hunts in large schools in the morning and evening. You can catch up to 10 pieces from one hole. The bait is small fish.

Burbot on the first ice is caught after the ice reaches a thickness of 10 cm. This must be done near the shore using a spoon. The most active bite begins in the evening. The bait is caught in the same reservoir.

River with current

Fishing before the first ice is more dangerous, because it is not uniform. With a strong current, eddies are formed and the ice becomes thinner. It's hard to notice with the eye. If you fail, you can easily fall under the ice. For fishing use:

  • jigs with a nod;
  • balancers;
  • vertical spinners;
  • float rods with a nod;
  • microjig;
  • winter girders.

These gears work effectively on rivers with currents. When working with baits, you need to have different types. The peculiarities of ice fishing on the river are such that successful fishing will leave pleasant memories in your memory.

Pond with standing water

In the pond, fish are observed to be dispersed throughout the water area of the reservoir. It can be caught in the reeds, close to the shore, at great depths. In the reservoirs of lakes and ponds, fish are caught all winter. But the most active bite occurs on the first cover. Jigs, hooks and sinkers need to be light, because there is no current. The most successful places are in bays and oxbow lakes. After complete icing, the fish leave these places for the rivers, where they can be caught with a jig; fishing can also be done with other gear.

Fishing on the first ice - where to bite and what to fish for

Fishermen look forward to fishing during the first ice! Of course, because the bite at this time is wonderful, however, it does not last long - ten days, no more. By the time the “cool” time comes, a true fisherman must be “armed and dangerous” for the fish tribe.

The best place for fishing on the first ice:

  • On the first ice, for trolling perch and pike, choose fishing spots near the cliffs in front of the holes;
  • to catch ide on the first ice, look for a flat, deep stretch behind them;
  • if at first the catchable places are in shallow water, near thickets of reeds, reeds, over flooded stumps and snags, then a little later - in deeper places, at the mouths of rivers, places where springs emerge.
  • in shallow places it is useless to fish without camouflage; you need to at least lay out a raincoat and fish from it.

When it bites on the first ice:

  • perch feeds early in the morning and from 15:00;
  • burbot begins to bite at nightfall;
  • ruffe can be caught on the first ice around the clock;
  • Consequently, fish bite on the first ice all day long, but at different times.

What to fish with on the first ice:

  • the most catchy jigs are pear-shaped or lentil-shaped with hook No. 6 - 8;
  • for catching perch (both with a spoon and a jig), the best bait is a small fish, even a slightly dented one;
  • a bunch of bloodworms (5 - 7 pieces) on a jig hook is irresistible for ide, bream, and pike perch.
  • perch, roach, and silver bream prefer no more than 2 bloodworms strung on a hook in a ring; these fish, especially perch, like it when the bait is moving.

A little about security

Some anglers rule out the possibility of getting into cold water in winter. But tragedy can happen in the most unexpected and trivial situations.

An indicative example is the ice hole made recently by fishermen, which was covered with a thin ice crust and masked with fresh snow. The most careful person can get into it. Even at shallow depths, serious problems can arise, since it is difficult to get out on the ice on your own in heavy clothing. Experienced fishermen always take with them a simple device called “Rescuers”. It consists of two awls with comfortable handles, which are connected to each other with a nylon rope. They hide in the sleeves of a winter jacket and, if necessary, quickly end up in your hands. With the help of sharp “Rescuers” you can dig into the ice and pull the body onto the ice.

Methods of fishing on first ice

You can fish on the first ice with different gear. The most popular methods are the following.

    Sheer trolling is a fairly safe and mobile fishing option. Armed with an ice pick, you can slowly move across a frozen body of water. The holes are made quickly with an ice pick in thin ice. You can get a lot of perches from one successful hole with a spoon. There is good fishing with artificial baits for pike perch.

Fish Search Tactics

In different bodies of water, after freeze-up, fish occupy certain water areas. Much depends on the size of the reservoir, as well as on the behavior of a particular species.

  • The easiest way to find active fish is in ponds, oxbow lakes, and small lakes. Within a few hours you can explore the reservoir up and down. If the fish is feeding, then you won’t have to wait long for a bite. First, you should study the coastal areas, and then look for fish in the depths.
  • It is more difficult to find a decent trophy on large rivers and reservoirs. Large areas will require both means of transportation and instruments for determining depth. In this case, you should start from the type of fish that is being hunted.

One of the coveted winter trophies among jig fans is bream. Fishing on the first ice is the best period for catching large fish. At the beginning of winter, schools of bream and bream occupy deep holes. It is futile to look for this fish at a depth of 6 m. Of particular interest to the bream angler are sudden changes in depth. It is on the dump that it is more convenient for bream to feed without expending a lot of energy. Since it is difficult to lure a school with bait during the period of first ice, the fisherman simply needs to move along the edge.

Pike and perch

In winter, pike and perch stick to the same parking areas. This is explained by the fact that these predators hunt for the same linen. After the ice freezes, they chase schools of bleak or roach in shallow areas of the reservoir. Therefore, the search starts from the coastline. Often bites from perch or pike occur right off the shore or in the grass. The fishing depth should not exceed 4 m, but the choice of gear depends on the size of the population of each species. If there are a lot of these predators in a particular body of water, then you can catch them using vertical trolling.

But when there are a few toothy fish in the lake, it is better to set up fishing rods with the usual live bait, and hunt for perch with a spinner or a balance beam. The largest humpback whales can be caught in rocky areas or snags.
