A fishing hook is the most important link in any fishing equipment. The success of fishing will largely depend on its properties. This article presents ratings of various types of hooks: from standard to offset and tees.

The best offset hooks

Offset machines are most often used when installing silicone and foam rubber baits. With their help, it is possible to obtain snag-free fishing rods that are comfortable for fishing in snagged areas and in ponds overgrown with grass.

The offset rating looks like this:

  1. Decoy Worm.
    The Japanese company produces very high quality offset hooks. Of particular note is the Worm series. Models numbered 11, 13, 15 and 17 are distinguished by very good sharpness, which does not go away after several fishing trips. The hooks have a wide eye. They are perfect for twisters, vibrotails, slugs and foam fish.
  1. Hitfish.
    These hooks are great for jigging. There are offset machines made of thin and thick wire. It is worth noting models with a large Big Hole ear. The bait attached to such a hook moves more freely. The quality of workmanship and affordable price of these offset machines make them desirable for many spinners.
  1. Owner.
    Ovner fishing hooks do not need unnecessary advertising. It produces very good offset printers. Particularly worth highlighting are models 5140 and 5109. The hooks are made of thick wire. They are always spicy and great for Cheburashkas.
  1. GAMAKATSU EWG Worm.
    Gamakatsu fishing hooks are held very well in soft silicone baits. They are suitable for Texas rigs and do not lose their sharpness after many fishing trips.
  1. Mustad 37145BLN.
    Offsetters from a Norwegian company are excellent for fishing on voluminous silicones: frogs, crustaceans and large twisters. The hooks are made of strong wire that does not bend under heavy loads.

How to attach bait to an offset hook

In order to properly place the bait on an offset hook, they must match each other in size. When attaching a silicone bait to an offset hook, you should attach the bait to the hook and mark the puncture point. For a twister, the puncture point should be located at the end of the twister body. For a vibrotail, the puncture point should be located in the center of the vibrotail’s body or slightly closer to the head of the bait. The hook should not interfere with the free movements of the vibrating tail.

A correctly mounted silicone bait fits tightly to the offset tip to prevent the hook from catching on underwater obstacles. On the other hand, the tip of an offset hook should not be too deeply recessed into the body of the bait in order to avoid the fish from leaving when attacking the bait.

When placing a silicone bait on an offset hook, you should take into account the rigidity of the material from which the bait is made; in order for the bait not to slip off the hook, it is better to pull it a little.

To attach a silicone bait to an offset hook, follow these steps:

  • Compare the sizes of the silicone bait and the offset hook.
  • Pierce the end part of the bait at a right angle and bring the hook point out at the bottom of the bait.
  • Pull the offset hook through the bait to the hook ring.
  • Unfold the hook, attach the bait and determine the puncture point of the bait. By changing the puncture point, you can tighten or loosen the silicone bait on the offset hook.
  • We pierce the body of the bait and remove the hook point at the intended point in the upper part of the bait.
  • We check the reliability of the bait’s fixation on the offset hook and pull the silicone bait up to the eye of the offset hook.
  • We run our finger along the silicone bait, checking that the tip of the hook fits tightly to the body of the bait, and when you press the bait, it comes out of the body of the bait and clings to your finger.

Installation of a twister and vibrating tail with a narrow body can be carried out on an offset hook of a suitable size of any type. To mount a vibrating tail with a wide body, use an offset hook of the Wide Gap type.

How to choose the size

More often, beginners select hooks only based on size, and consider this the main factor when choosing. There is truth in this, but there are other factors. Different sizes are also needed if the fisherman wants to successfully fish. You can’t go to the store, pick up five medium-sized packs and assume that you’re covered for the season.

Taking into account various attachments and baits, types of fish, fishing conditions in different bodies of water. It is recommended to use hooks from 8 to 18 numbers during the season. Most often these are numbers 10, 12, 14 and 16 according to European qualification, when the higher the number, the smaller the hook. However, in some stores there is a situation where the smaller the number, the smaller the hook.

Numbers 14 and 16 are usually used for catching small fish with a feeder, for example, on a still body of water. Bloodworms attach well to such hooks and do not spread. These sizes of fishing hooks are suitable, for example, for catching roach with a feeder, bleak, and bream.

But number 18 is rarely used by beginners; more often it is used by athletes to catch small fish at speed. Not to mention number 20, which is no longer used by athletes so often.

Numbers 8, 10 and 12 are already suitable for catching large fish such as bream, crucian carp, carp or chub. These sizes are already used more often when fishing with a feeder on the river, where the fish are larger and stronger. You can already attach baits such as a worm, maggot, peas, corn, and also make so-called “sandwiches”. For example, on number 10, 2–3 maggots and bloodworms are planted. On number 8 they already put several maggots and a worm or 2 parts of a worm, which can already attract large bream or other trophy fish. They can withstand the load when fishing for trophies. Unless, of course, it’s a Chinese fake that can be unbent by hand.

The best hooks for jigs

The highest quality requirements are placed on hooks for jigs. Not only the sharpness and strength of the wire is important, but also the nature of the bend, the parameters of the beard and eye. It is quite difficult to create an objective rating for such hooks. Under some fishing conditions, some models will be the best fishing hooks, but in other situations they are not so effective. The type of jig is of great importance. The hook and the body of the bait must be combined in such a way that the correct action is obtained.

The rating consists of the following positions:

  1. Gamakatsu 1050N.
    Gamakatsu fishing hooks are often chemically sharpened. This series is no exception. The presented models have a long fore-end and are distinguished by great strength and sharpness. It is easy to attach even the smallest bloodworms to the hook.

Practice has shown that they are equally well suited for reelless and standard jigs. In many respects, these are one of the best hooks for jig fishing.

Hook Bend

The greater the bend of the hook, the more baits you can put on it.

Hooks with a wide bend are more suitable for using plant baits.

For animal baits, hooks with a short bend are more suitable.

From personal observations, fish bite more actively on hooks with a narrow bend, which is probably more difficult for them to feel.

Ovner hook manufacturing technology

The Japanese are a scrupulous and scrupulous people, and only thanks to these qualities they achieved the creation of fishing hooks of the highest quality, designed for each type of fish.

Before starting production, the company's employees conducted scientific research, in which they were assisted by scientists from a research laboratory studying fish.

Let's celebrate! Each fish has a certain structure, weight and shape of the oral cavity, and taking into account all these factors, Ovner specialists began to produce fishing hooks.

Thanks to innovative technologies, Ovner uses only the highest quality steel alloy to produce hooks. And this is a distinctive feature of the products of this company, which helps to inspire the confidence of fishing buyers to this day.

Also an important criterion is the thickness of the hooks themselves. Other manufacturers increase strength by thickening the diameter, but the Ovner company achieves strengthening not by thickening, but by introducing special innovative components into the steel alloy that add strength to the hooks without increasing the diameter.

Types of coatings

The types of hook coatings of this brand have distinctive features, depending on:

  • series type;
  • color design;
  • design features.

Ovner brand hooks are coated in a variety of colors. It is this feature that helps anglers understand how durable this fishing device will be.

Distinctive features of the type of coating:

  1. Matte black/black chrome (BLACK/BLACKC HROME). Inspires the greatest confidence in anglers, has an anti-reflective effect with an increased level of strength and anti-corrosion treatment.
  2. Gold/oxidizing gold (GOLD/OXIDIZE GOLD). Brilliant or dull yellow color range for universal use.
  3. Tin (TIN). Vaguely reminiscent of the color of dark silver without shine, tinned coating.
  4. White/white oxidizing (WHITE/OXIDIZE WHITE). The high-gloss white finish is achieved by adding nickel to the alloy.
  5. Brown (BROWN). Alloy with added bronzer.

The following color ranges of coatings are innovative and have not yet received due popularity in our country:

  • light purple (LIGHT PURPLE);
  • green forest (FOREST GREEN);
  • wood brown (WOODY-BROWN);
  • red (RED);
  • blue (BLUE).

With a huge range of products, each unit has its own name and a specific digital code. It doesn’t make much sense to describe in detail each of the huge assortment (more than two hundred items).

Model encoding includes:

  • series title;
  • type of hook;
  • applied color coating;
  • What kind of fish can it be used for catching?

More detailed information about encoding can be found in the specialized catalog, which should be provided by all reputable companies involved in the sale of this brand.

The range of Ovner brand hooks includes small and large models and a special measure for measuring the size of hooks has been developed for them:

  • in small models, the largest number will correspond to the smallest size;
  • in large models the numeric numbering is only fractional and the largest number will indicate the smallest size.

Like many of any particularly popular products, the products of the Ovner brand are subject to plagiarism. And when buying hooks, you can run into fakes.

In order to avoid this annoying misunderstanding, you should remember the most important distinctive features of the information applied to branded packaging with hooks:

  • On the back of the package, above the barcode, the model range and hook size must be indicated. Identical numbering must be applied to the front side of the package;
  • The company's production facilities are located not only in Japan itself, but also have subsidiaries in China and the Philippines. Based on this information, on the original packaging in the lower right corner of the back of the package it will be written: “Product of Japan” (if made in Japan). On packs produced by subsidiaries, the information only looks like this: “Materials from Japan. Made in Philippines/China" (the country will only be indicated in which the hooks were made;
  • odd numbering of hooks, produced by the Ovner company, exists, but is extremely rare (specialized products produced in small batches);
  • on the lower right corner of the front side of the package the number of hooks in this pack is indicated;
  • the information indicated on the front side must clearly coincide with the information in the official catalog or website of the Ovner company (name, code, color scheme, size);
  • compliance of the information on the packaging with its internal contents;
  • the cost of the cheapest hook of this brand cannot be less than one hundred rubles.

Offsets

So, the first part - I'll start with offsets.

I noticed that somehow strangely my understanding of equipping rubber with hooks occurs. I can catch one season only with offsets - during a long winter I try to equip all the baits at once, and then I don’t remember about it during the season. And next season, for some reason, I equip everything I have with single hooks, almost without remembering about offsets. This is what happened this time too - there are almost no baits on offsets in the packs. But nevertheless, you always have several packs of different sizes and shapes with you - just in case!

Kosadaka B-SOI. Sizes 2 - 4 - 8

I bought offsets at the beginning of last year, and still have a few packs left. Many will say that Kosadaki’s second number is equivalent to the number 1/0 of other manufacturers! Yes, for some reason they have an incomprehensible and their own size numbering system. Therefore, for a pure microjig it is better to take size 8 or choose another manufacturer.

The offsets themselves, made from medium-thick wire, spring well. The step near the ring is also average - pay attention to the thickness of the head of the bait - so that it and the size of the step approximately coincide. Otherwise, equipment problems may occur. The hooks are quite good in terms of sharpness, but there is nothing phenomenal about them. They get dull on stones and other things quite quickly - but due to the low cost, replacing one offset with a second, sharp one is no problem. The fish are not kept well, and sometimes fish accidents occur. Therefore, I would recommend them either in cases where there is no money at all, or if you are not at competitions where every “tail” caught can bring victory.

Sasame Wide Gap Offset. Size 4

I somehow grabbed these offsets from the store for lack of anything else. The packaging is definitely cool - inside there is a wire bent into a triangle, on which all the hooks are attached. Nothing gets lost, doesn’t fly out of the pack, etc. - I took it all out together, pulled one offset off the wire, and put the rest back.

Pay attention to the name - Wide Gap. For these hooks, the step is located below the hook tip, which allows you to use thick-shaped baits with this offset - for example, twisters or Fat series slugs. The wire used is thinner than on Kosadaka and in general gives the impression of a more solid product. In terms of sharpness, they do not penetrate the skin instantly, but they cut through the fish with a bang, and there is practically no chance of escape. If you find it somewhere at an adequate price that suits you, you can safely take it.

Decoy SS Finesse Offset Hook. Worm Series 19. Size 6

Hooks are about the same price category as above. Unfortunately, the store did not have the same sizes, so it is not yet possible to compare them head-on. The name of the series again hints at the use of these offsets with Worm-type lures. The overall size is smaller than the Sasame Wide Gap, but the tip is also located above the step. Personally, I equip such baits as Reins G-Tail Saturn, Aiko Puppet, Tict Brilliant with this pair of offsets. The wire is the same as that of Sasame - in general, I think the hooks are very similar and in the coming season it will be necessary to compare them head-on with the same sizes

What are the classifications of hooks?

Thus, single hooks can be useful for lovers of catching herbivorous fish who use fishing rods for this. You can purchase options with enlarged rings, which allow you to fix the hook less rigidly, which is convenient when using removable reinforced leashes. They are also used in donkeys, as they have excellent sharpness and guarantee a confident hook.

Offset and double hooks are used when equipping silicone baits. It is worth remembering that on such gear, derailments are a common occurrence, since they are caused by the not very good location of the tip. It seems to be pressed against the bait itself. And yet, it is precisely due to its severity that the problem is solved, and the number of effective hooks increases noticeably compared to cheaper options from other manufacturers.

I would like to pay special attention to treble hooks. They are often used in assemblies designed for bottoms with feeders, as well as on all kinds of wobblers and spinners. But they all have one common problem. Which?

The fact is that even well-known manufacturers of such gear save on hooks, paying primarily attention to the appearance of the fish itself and the decoration of the packaging. As a result, you can find expensive baits in which the hooks can be straightened with your bare hands. Of course, their sharpness leaves much to be desired. Subsequently, it may turn out that, despite the high realism, the tackle gives a very small number of successful bites.

One of the primary selection criteria is the size of the fishing hook. It is this parameter of the product that plays an important role in catching fish of a certain size. The selected size of the accessory should allow you to securely attach the required volume of bait, which the fish can swallow without much effort.

This is precisely the case when the hook numbers are designated according to classifications that differ radically in the methodology for determining the size. It just so happens that today we most often come across several main types of markings, the nuances of their formation will be discussed in our further and more detailed discussion.

Domestic

Our domestic classification of hooks is logical and easy to understand. Without any kind of unnecessary calculations and guesswork, using just the numerical value of the accessory, you can easily figure out the size of the hook. In addition, the numbering scale is built on an ascending principle: the higher the number, the larger the product, which is more understandable when selecting the right option for fishing conditions.

To determine the hook number, a simple measurement is enough. But it is worth noting that this technique is not popular in the international fishing sphere and its application is mainly used in our country and neighboring countries of the post-Soviet space.

International

Most European and American well-known brands producing fishing hooks operate according to the international classification. To be fair, we add that the so-called international numbering system is actually a purely English method for calculating sizes, often called the Reddish scale.

The system received this name from the British city of Redditch, where a famous factory for the production of fishing accessories was located. The classification developed by the plant's management has taken root in the fishing industry, becoming the world's main system for designating the size range of a fishing hook. The classification of fishing hooks on the international scale is radically different from the domestic system.

The line of sizes itself fits into the numerical range from 24 to 1. As a result of design changes in the accessory and the need for the production of larger products, the numbering has undergone changes and hooks whose dimensions exceed the classic original limit, most often this applies to offset workers, are designated by a double number according to the presented further example – 2/0.

Japanese

Japanese manufacturers present the product according to their own classification scale. Without further ado and without bothering to invent a diagram, they adopted as a basis the principle of calculating size according to the international system, with the difference that the Japanese size range was shifted upward by two points.

Read more: 5 best blood pressure monitors from aliexpress rating 2020

Thus, it turns out that the tenth hook size on the international scale corresponds to the size of the twelfth number according to the Japanese classification, and the English twentieth corresponds to the twenty-second Japanese number. Based on this fact, when purchasing fishing hooks, you should definitely pay attention to the country of origin of the product and only after that analyze the sizes of fishing hooks by numbering corresponding to the origin of the product.

Finnish

The Finnish system makes it even more difficult to determine the appropriate numerical value. In some ways, the Finnish version of numbering is similar to the Japanese scale, but it has a number of important differences that the fisherman needs to know when choosing the optimal size product. This classification lacks a number of dimensions inherent in other systems, and the bottom of the assembled table, where the largest hooks are assigned, is designated by two numbers, like the modern superstructure of the international system.

In addition to these nuances, fishing hooks numbers 14, 16, 18 and 22 coincide with Japanese accessories, taking into account the decrease in their value by one. It cannot be denied that there is a certain complexity in comparing products in this area, but with accumulated knowledge and updating of various systems, literacy and accuracy in selecting the right hook can be achieved by the fisherman, regardless of the country of manufacture.
