Annual grayling activity chart
The “calendar year” of grayling begins not in January, as in humans, but in June. The explanation for this is simple: this month follows spawning, which is the main test for grayling. It is after spawning that the fish roll down from the upper reaches of the rivers “to their starting position” and begin life “from scratch.”
I dare to note that the specific terms that I am going to announce further are typical for the southern strip of the grayling range (latitudes below St. Petersburg and above Ufa). For more northern regions, the biting schedule will be slightly shifted: summer will “start” later and end earlier, and accordingly, winter will be longer. So, if at a latitude of 55-60 degrees (Ekaterinburg, Tyumen, Perm, Kudymkar) grayling spawns with might and main in May, then north of 60 degrees (Syktyvkar, Arkhangelsk) it spawns no earlier than June.
In the first days of summer, the water brightens before our eyes - all the turbidity that was raised by the flood settles. The grayling has a post-spawning zhor: now it can use its vision, which makes its hunting for invertebrates many times more effective than in muddy water. In addition, the fish’s body requires the restoration of those resources that were spent during the breeding season - this circumstance also increases appetite. I’m not afraid to say that in June (especially in the second half) grayling bites most greedily.
August . The month when the water level in the river is minimal. In the upper reaches it becomes very shallow, but grayling stays in their holes to the last, although they may already begin to slowly “change” them to deeper ones, gradually sliding down. However, it is too early to talk about real autumn migration.
At the end of summer, grayling continues to feed, but becomes more capricious.
Autumn
September is the time when two phenomena begin in the life of grayling: autumn feeding and migration to wintering areas. The approximate timing of both phenomena coincides with the beginning of leaf fall; people even have their own sign about this. A yellow leaf has fallen from the birch tree - it’s time to go after the grayling. Now he is actively fattening up before winter and responds well to baits floating in the water column.
