Catching crucian carp with a side nod in the summer: choosing a nod, jig and place for fishing

Summer fishing rod for rigging with a jig

When fishing with a summer fishing rod with a side guard, you must constantly hold it in your hands, so the rod should be as light as possible.
When fishing from a boat, a fishing rod 4 to 5 meters long is sufficient. If fishing takes place from the shore or wade and in large bodies of water, then the length of the rod can reach 7 - 9 m. It is clear that the longer the rod, the heavier it is. Not every angler is able to fish for a long time with a jig with a seven-meter or more rod. While fishing, you may find that a long fishing rod will be too heavy for you. For this reason, some anglers do not use summer rods over six meters. Of course, depending on the material from which the fishing rod is made, the weight of the fishing rods also differs. The choice of fishing rod type depends on the size of the intended prey. If you plan to catch fish weighing up to 1 kg, then you can limit yourself to a simple telescopic rod with “blind” equipment (without rings and a reel). When catching larger specimens, you will need a fishing rod equipped with guides and a reel (“running” equipment).

Summer fishing line with side nod

The quality of the fishing line rig determines how the lateral nod of the fishing rod plays in summer fishing conditions, especially when fishing with a jig with a long plumb line, that is, at great depths.

Therefore, you should start rigging a summer fishing rod by choosing the strength of a fishing line that can withstand the jerks of large fish that are often found in a particular body of water.

The thickness of the fishing line can be reduced if a sliding rig is provided on a summer fishing rod with a side nod. But here you should keep in mind: snags in a pond and algae (especially sedge) can damage the strongest fishing line in a day of summer fishing.

Therefore, after the end of the intense bite, it is better to check the fishing line at the end of the summer fishing rod. We check the quality of fishing line for abrasion on ice during winter fishing.

Thickness of fishing line for summer fishing on the side nod

Usually, on a telescope or the plug of a fishing rod with a side nod and a jig for fishing in the seaweed in the summer, I put a line 0.16-0.18 mm thick, which can easily withstand jerks of crucian carp or bream weighing up to a kilogram.

There are, of course, line breaks, but in order to avoid irreparable problems during summer fishing, the equipment provides a supply of fishing line on the reel spool or on the fishing rod reel.

Fishing methods

  • Fall-rise. In this case, the same action is repeated repeatedly, namely: the jig sinks to the very bottom, and then gradually (10-15 centimeters at a time) returns to its initial position.
  • At the very bottom. In this case, the jig sinks to the very bottom. Then the fisherman lifts it 10-15 centimeters from the bottom and plays for several minutes. After which, the jig sinks to the very bottom again.
  • Finger play. The process of lowering the jig itself is no different from the previous method, but now, in order to play with it, you just need to tap the rod with your finger.
  • Tension. This method is possible and recommended for use in bodies of water where there is a current. Here the jig, as usual, is lowered to the very bottom, and then the line is pulled tight and slowly lifts the jig to the surface of the water.
  • Jerks. Here the movements are repeated. The jig does not sink to the very bottom, but stays in the water column. Then, with a sharp movement, it must be raised 40 centimeters. After this, it descends again into the thickness, rises again, etc.
  • Movement along the bottom. The jig should always be at the bottom of the reservoir. At this time, you should use a jerk.
  • Calm position. Everything here is extremely simple. The angler must set the jig at the desired depth and just wait for the bite.
  • Drawing. The jig sinks to the very bottom and there it must be moved with forward movements. Thus, the bait moves along the bottom and attracts the future catch.

You shouldn’t settle on one method, because fish bite differently on different days. Therefore, if you have already come fishing, then try several methods and choose the one that is relevant today.

Techniques for fishing with jigs in summer

First of all you need to find the fish

Moving carefully and as quietly as possible, the angler first fishes areas near vegetation, hydraulic structures, trees fallen into the water, under bushes hanging over the water, etc. In such “shelters” the fish takes the bait more confidently than in clear water, and it’s easier to find it here

Keep in mind that such places are full of hooks, so you need to take a few jigs with you in reserve.

To save on losses, many anglers buy only cheap jigs or make them themselves. The simplest jig can be made from a shotgun weight and a hook with an elongated shank. The forend is inserted into the cut of the pellet weight and the hook is clamped in it with pliers, that’s it, the jig is ready. Also, in order to save jigs, thin braided line is used instead of the usual monofilament line. Still, it is stronger and breaks less often when caught.

Success in jig fishing depends not only on the choice of place for fishing, weather conditions, etc., but also on playing with the jig

This is why it is so important to correctly assemble and configure the jig tackle, which was discussed earlier. Moreover, each type of fish has its own preferences in the game and you need to adapt to them

One of the game techniques is to slowly lower the jig while braking. Having lowered it to the bottom, they wait for a while. Then they raise it by 10 - 20 cm, slightly swinging the jig from side to side. This is followed by a short pause, after which they are slowly lowered again, etc.

Or, the bait pulled up from the bottom is slowly, with periodic pauses and making various combinations of movements, moved along the vegetation, first to the left, then to the right, imitating some insect that has brazenly grabbed food. If there are no bites at the bottom, they will try to fish in the upper layers of the water. Some fishermen fish with bait, others prefer running fishing without bait. When fishing during walking, when there are no bites for a long time, they do not stay in one place for more than five minutes.

If you don’t bite for a long time, but you are sure that there are definitely fish there, you need to change the bait or game. If the bite is weak, you can put a leash with a hook above the jig. It is better to use natural bait as bait - bloodworms, maggots, dung worms, caddis flies, etc., as well as various “sandwiches” of them. When catching peaceful fish, sometimes (usually in the summer) they use baits of plant origin, for example, a chatterbox (see chatterbox for fishing).

Usually bites from large fish are sharp and confident - this is accompanied by a sharp tilt of the nod or its rise. It happens that a large fish is not so active, then the nod may freeze for a split second or rise slightly. The little thing only tugs at the bait; a small, disorderly tremor is visible from the nod. In conclusion, I would like to clarify that the information provided here is generalized and is more for informational purposes than advisory. Those. examples of equipment and reasoning cannot be taken as strict truth, since each angler has his own preferences, experience, “reservoirs” and fishing conditions. That's all, no tail, no scales!

Side nod fishing technique

Some technical features and useful tips for catching crucian carp with a side nod from the shore and boat in open water:

We experiment with the game - it is important to find the movements to which the crucian reacts. This usually involves relatively slow rocking 3-10 cm from the bottom, slow lowering or tapping to create turbidity. Crucian carp is not a perch, so we don’t constantly pull the jig

The game needs to be measured, slow, with pauses. Watch the videos embedded in the article. It is important to take pauses - crucian carp often take just during stops. We select the length of these pauses and alternate them with bait runs. After the first slow descent during casting, a bite may occur. Casting the rig and plunging the bait after it is already part of the game. We don’t throw the equipment, but slowly submerge it, accompanying us with the rod and watching the nod. Horizontal wiring and pulling along the bottom sometimes work in the spring. In summer, it is better to use only vertical play. Small crucian carp up to 300 grams like a more vigorous game, large ones - smooth and measured. In the heat of summer, fish can take fish not from the bottom, but at half-water or right under the water lilies. We check all horizons. Playing with a jig for crucian carp in the spring is even smoother and slower. After each rise or movement, we maintain long pauses at the bottom or let the bait hover 3-5 cm above it.

Features of fishing with a side nod

The side nod allows you to fish not in one standard way, but in two. The first one is with blind equipment, the second one is with running equipment. For blind rigs, a telescopic fly rod is usually used. But if you are more interested in the second option, then you will have to purchase a fishing rod with guide rings and a decent reel. If you are fishing in a body of water where there are a lot of trees hanging over the surface of the water, then a running rig will not work here. After all, you won’t be able to lift the fishing rod vertically in such conditions. And this will not make you very happy, considering that these are the places where fish gather.

But if you are fishing on a swampy bank, which is completely overgrown with reeds or sedge thickets, and it is difficult to get to normal (clean) water, a fishing rod of this type is very helpful. You can lower the jig over the edge of the grass, but this cannot be done with a blind rig. You will have to slowly reel in the bait while laying out your rods. Meanwhile, the bait will drag along all these thickets and cling to them. Therefore, it is better to have both types of fishing rods with you and take the right one, depending on where you are going to fish.

Read! Tips for caring for your ice auger

The same baits and nods are used for both types of rods, so there are even savings here. If you have already decided to try fishing with a side nod, then you should think in advance about where and what you will do it with. In the sense that it will not be very convenient if you arrive at some very fishy place with inappropriate equipment.

The important point is when exactly to catch. The season affects the success of fishing. The ideal moment is right before spawning, in the spring. This is where the fish really get hungry. She is not so shy, she travels in large flocks. It bites on almost everything, all day long. The jig is good at this time of year, because the fish go to shallow places where the depth is no more than a meter. Another moment when a large number of insects fly out. This is where you need to take advantage of the moment and go out with a nod to the nearest bodies of water.

Choosing the right fishing rod

For fishing in summer, it is recommended to use a 4 or 5 m rod with a rigid action. A regular telescopic fishing rod will also work. Fishing with a longer tackle will be inconvenient - your hands will quickly get tired.

Replacing the float with a nod, the tip becomes the main part of the rod. It should be quite rigid and reliable so that it does not bend under the weight of the nod with the jig.

Read Fishing with pickerel

The rod is equipped with a small inertial reel. The fishing line is taken as thin as possible with a diameter of 0.1–0.25 mm and must be transparent.

The side attachment of the nod is due to the convenience of observing bites, since the tackle can be located at a great distance from the fisherman.

Mount the nod on the side of the tip of the rod on a special elastic band - a coupling.

The nod to the summer fishing rod should be brightly colored so that it stands out against the background of the water surface and surrounding vegetation.

If you decide to hunt a predator, do not forget about the use of vertical spinners and balancers.

At the preparation stage, it is necessary to unwind the rod. Then rotate the line around the blank several times. Thread the end of the fishing line through the signaling ring, and attach the jig to the same tip.

Pendulum nod from a spring

Fishing needs forced the construction of pendulum gear. It is the spring nods that reduce the load and make fishing much easier with them. It is enough to accelerate the load once to the required amplitude and frequency of oscillations, after which all that remains is to maintain them all the time in the required rhythm.

The springs of the pendulum nods operate autonomously due to the weights located at the ends of the plates. Their work does not depend on the weight of the jigs. The lateral pendulum nod consists of the following parts:

  • metal plate or plastic holder;
  • springs;
  • weight;
  • loops for passing fishing line.

Several holes are drilled in the holder. With the help of one of them the nod is attached to the rod, and through the others the fishing line will be wound. The length of the spring depends on the required amplitude and frequency. The longer the spring, the greater the amplitude, but the lower the frequency, you can swing the weight.

Making a pendulum nod

To make a spring nod you will need:

  • thermoplastic material (you can use a toothbrush handle);
  • springs from mechanical watches;
  • thin copper wire;
  • drill with a set of drills;
  • an awl or nails of different sizes, if you don’t have a drill;
  • pliers;
  • soldering iron

Manufacturing process:

  1. A hole is drilled in the middle of the thermoplastic material that will act as a holder. Its diameter should be equal to the thickness of the end of the rod whip. A hole with a smaller diameter is drilled nearby to pass the fishing line.
  2. A loop is soldered onto the working end of the spring from thin copper wire, which bends at an angle of 35–45 degrees in relation to the plane of the spring.
  3. A lead weight is attached to the loop using soldering. This may be a processed solder flow.
  4. The springs, together with the weight, are fixed on a loop to a plastic holder. To fix them, thick-walled medical tubes of small diameter are used.
  5. The ends of the edges of the plastic nod holders are rounded.

You can select the optimal weight of the load and the length of the spring only directly in the water, by lowering a ready-made nod into it on a fishing line.

DIY methods

Experienced fishermen prefer to independently assemble their gear for winter fishing. They say that the most popular devices are Shcherbakov's nods, plastic devices, and models made from clock and coil springs. Here are the famous nods for winter fishing, which are not difficult to make yourself. Therefore, even a beginner can handle this task.

Shcherbakov nod (bearing)

Such multifunctional homemade nods for winter fishing rods are significantly superior to purchased ones, since they can be customized to your own preferences. Shcherbakov's nod is very sensitive, therefore, thanks to the device, you can catch even shy carp. How to assemble the structure:

  1. A small diameter bearing is taken and fixed at the end of the fishing rod. This detail forms the basis for the entire product.
  2. An iron spoke is mounted to the bearing. It must be fastened securely. Soldering is used for this purpose.
  3. To ensure good balance, a weight is attached to both ends of the spoke. The weight of the load is selected based on the type of artificial bait. A loop is attached to one end of the knitting needle.
  4. Finally, a fishing line is inserted through the loop. This completes the work.

Homemade plastic device

The material for the future gatehouse will be an ordinary plastic cup. It is allowed to use plastic from bottles containing various drinks. Device assembly method:

  1. First, take a glass and make strips from it. The size of the strips is 10*1 cm. You only need to cut from the sides.
  2. The strips should be given an arched shape.
  3. At this stage, take an awl or needle. Step back half a centimeter from the edge of the strip and make a hole. Then the part of the strip with the hole should be treated with waterproof red varnish.
  4. Next, take a 7 mm cambric and put it on the back side of the strip.

Useful tips

In conclusion, we will tell you how to increase the number of bites when fishing with a nodding rod:

  • To make the bait more visible to fish, you can attach beads, pieces of rubber, foam rubber, artificial or live bloodworms and maggots to the jig.
  • You can also use complementary foods. Just a little bit. Its task is only to whet the appetite of the crucian carp and lure it to a specific place. If you overdo it with the amount of bait, the fish will be busy eating it, and the jig will not be interested in it.
  • Often the fish gets used to the action of a particular jig. Therefore, periodically, if there are no bites for a long time, it is better to change the bait. Take, for example, a jig of a different shape, size or color.
  • In summer, when it is very hot, crucian carp often moves to the middle or upper layers of water. The fact is that there is more oxygen here. Therefore, wiring can be done closer to the surface.

From the video you will learn how to make a fishing rod with a side nod yourself:

Summer jig - how to fish with a side nod

Fishing with a side nod is sporty and exciting. It is necessary to be active and constantly experiment. The rod becomes a tool for realizing the art of the fisherman. And the constant choice of place and method of approaching the fishing spot gives the process a special dynamic.

It's interesting to fish on a river where there are many different types of fish, so there is always unpredictability. The most common species caught are perch, rudd and roach. Chub, white bream, ide, and crucian carp are also common. But even in a regular bet, where, most likely, there will be no one except crucian carp to grab a summer jig, fishing can be very exciting.

But it all starts with a side nod fishing rod. It is still difficult to find such a set of tackle on sale. And the summer nod itself is a rarity in the store. But such gear is not difficult to make yourself. Let's take a closer look at how to make a fishing rod with a side nod.

Rod selection

The most weightless and stiffest rod is selected - a carbon fly rod with the fastest action is selected. Its optimal length is 5.0 meters. It’s already harder to work with a 6-meter rod, and moving from place to place through thickets is problematic. In many cases, a 4-meter rod will do, it all depends on the steepness of the bank and the size of the river.

The flexible tip of the fishing rod is removed, and the hole is plugged with a stick coated with glue.

Making a summer nod

It is better to make a nod for a summer fishing rod with your own hands. Its length is at least 20 cm, and the material can be found underfoot. A strip of transparent plastic cut from a bottle will also work. It needs to be made into a cone, with a gradual expansion towards the anchoring point. Another option requires some metalworking skills - cut a strip from a tape measure with metal scissors, and file the edges. This type of nod is preferable because it is more resistant to damage.

Most likely, a stiffer spring-type nod is better suited - selected according to the weight of the jig and the diameter of the fishing line. The second shortened plate must be attached to the first one with glue threads.

Another option for making a nod is to use carbon fiber from the fishing rod. Either the entire tip (cleaned with sandpaper) or split off a strip from the stock.

Nod equipment

At the end of the nod, a tulip is fixed - the final access ring. It can be made from a thin paper clip and secured with threads and glue. Before the ring, it is advisable to put a ball or oval made of dense foam on the nod. It needs to be painted red. Then the bites will become more noticeable, and the eyes will not get tired much less. It is better to paint the nod itself with a thick zebra - red, black, yellow, or at least red stripes. For coloring you need to use waterproof paints.

To secure the nod to the rod, you need to use a thin twig (nail) 8 - 9 cm long. The twig is bent in the middle at 60 degrees, tied to the nod and to the rod with threads that are coated with glue. Together with this rod, its last throughput ring is also fixed at the end of the rod.

Of course, you can use a standard snap-on mount, attaching it to the nod. But it has never been reliable during fishing, so right when fishing you have to tie the nod tightly.

Reel or reel

You can use a rod without a reel. To wind the equipment, a small reel is made of foam, which is secured with threads not far from the tip of the rod. On the rod itself, only a couple of rings are installed - on the tip and near the reel. But you will have to adjust the descent of the fishing line each time, winding it on the reel while fishing. This is inconvenient, creates delays and reduces the maneuverability of the gear.

It seems that tackle with a reel and many rings is preferable, since it quickly adapts to the conditions, and the speed of feeding the bait is important for this type of fishing. In addition, having a reel gives you confidence, since surprises in the form of a bite from a large fish on the river happen often.

The lightest inertial coil is used for wiring. Just like the rings, it is better to secure it with thread. It is located half a meter from the butt.

In order not to roughen the game of jigs for fishing on the river, it is better to limit the thickness of the fishing line to 0.12 mm. And for a pond, 0.1 mm will do. But if you really come across something other than a small chub or ide, you will have to change the fishing line to 0.14 mm or even 0.16 mm. Such diameters should be in stock.

The process of fishing with a summer jig using nodding tackle

Fishing is about making the most attractive vibrations for the fish with a jig. And here everything depends on the experience and skill of the fisherman.

Sometimes you don’t need any “skill”; the fish is caught perfectly with a “stationary” suspended jig. The fact is that the jig still moves and makes a sound, since vibrations from the fishing rod and fishing line are transmitted to it.

The next simplest, but catchy technique is to slowly drag the jig along the bottom.

Also, the jig can be slowly and smoothly lowered, and then raised or twitched.....

To make the bait start dancing, the easiest way is to lightly tap the rod. Periodic increased vibration attracts fish better.

But there are an infinite number of options for a more complex game; you need to look for tricky tricks.

Bait

When fishing in summer, hooking a jig is often necessary. It is better to use what is available on the shore - a small leech, a caddis fly, or a small bug will do. During this fishing, it is useful to stock up on a metal strainer and wash the silt - there are always living creatures in it, which the fish will take first. You can also look under stones, on the leaves of water lilies.

You also need to take the classic trinity - bloodworms, worms, maggots, because you may not find bait on the river.

Tactics

When fishing with a side nod, you need to use maximum caution and camouflage. Playing "guerrilla" with fish not only captivates, but also provides you with caught tails.

You need to approach the casting point extremely quietly. Checking the place should start right from the water's edge, since the fish often stands under the shore. The fisherman is located as far as possible behind the bushes.

If there are no bites, then you need to slowly approach the water and fish left and right, paying special attention to the edge of the thicket and the places under the branches bent over the water.

The ability to fish very promising places under overhanging branches is a distinctive feature of the nodding summer fishing rod. This is almost impossible to do with other gear. It is worth making a nodding rod only to fish difficult places where the fish are not used to being afraid of anglers.

If there are no bites, then you can come close to the water and try to check the maximum depth. There are several different attachments left in the arsenal, and the art of wiring.

If there is no bite, you need to change the place and start a secret search all over again. After all, there will definitely be fish somewhere else.

Fishing with a nod rod involves constant searching and changing places. The unpredictability of events and the unexpectedness of large catches makes this fishing really interesting.

When and where is the best time to fish with nod tackle?

Fishing with a rod with a side nod requires careful selection of the place. This gear can be used for fishing from the shore, from a boat, or by wading. In any case, try to choose areas of the reservoir where the depth is no more than a couple of meters

Pay attention to the fact that nearby there are thickets of reeds or snags, leaning trees, or even fallen trees into the water

With a tackle with a bow nod, you can easily fish windows among aquatic vegetation and duckweed at a distance of just a couple of meters from the shore. Such places become especially “catchy” in the morning or evening, when the sun’s rays do not scare away crucian carp at shallow depths. If there is any pier or bridge on the reservoir, then you can fish with nodding tackle from such structures.

Many people prefer to use a boat. With it, for fishing with fishing rods with a side nod, it is easier to find a promising place where a school of crucian carp lives. The main thing is to behave quietly and row carefully so as not to scare away the fish with splashes and noise. On a boat, it is convenient to gradually fish the entire body of water, moving from the shore and shallow areas to depth or vice versa. Then you can return to the place where there were the most bites.

The side nod is good for fishing from a boat

Firstly, you can get on the pre-spawning feast. Crucian carp gather in schools, constantly search for food, bask near the shore and in the shallows, so they become more active and less timid. Competent play of the jig will definitely attract him.

Secondly, in the spring and early days of summer there is a massive emergence of insects. Of course, they end up in the water and become prey for fish. Therefore, to crucian carp, a jig “dancing” in the water seems to be a more natural bait and is associated with some kind of bug or fly.

In mid-summer, nod fishing is already less productive. The fish recover after spawning or due to hot weather. Therefore, it moves to depth, becomes slow and is more often tempted by plant baits lying on the bottom than by a jig.

The most effective fishing rod with a side nod is in the spring and summer season

A more active bite on nod tackle at this time usually occurs in the morning or cloudy days. The crucian carp is not so embarrassed by the bright sunlight, and it comes closer to the shore, to places with aquatic vegetation and reeds

If an angler pays attention to the illumination of the water, he will be able to fish well with a nod even in the summer. It’s just that if the weather is cloudy, then it is better to choose areas of the reservoir with colder and clearer water

If, on the contrary, it is sunny and hot, then it is better to fish with such gear in muddy water.

In autumn and when weather conditions worsen, fishing with rods with a side nod rarely gives results. Crucian carp tries to go to depths where it is not interested in active baits. In addition, it is difficult to catch the nod on small ponds and overgrown lakes. Already in May, the water here warms up so much that algae begin to bloom, and this negatively affects the bite.

Important factors when fishing with a side nod

Wind

The not very strong wind is our ally. When there is wind, the water is evenly mixed, and this has a good effect on the bite. If the water is somewhat choppy, it will be easier to approach the fish by boat. If you are fishing by wading, you should enter the water carefully. If the water in the reservoir is clear, the intended prey is quite cautious. You need to go in 2-3 steps at a time, and try not to muddy the waters. It is better if the wave is breaking, as in this case the fish comes closer to the shore.

If the wind is sideways, fishing will be inconvenient - it can bend the fishing line and rod. If the wind is strong, then it is impossible to fish at all; it can simply break the rod. And with little or no wind, the fish becomes passive and moves at a distance from the shore, so it is difficult to reach it in the calm.

Bottom relief

For fishing with a side nod and wade, long, lightly overgrown streams are quite attractive. Fish come to these places to feed. You can go far enough along them to get close to the fish, and the vegetation allows you to camouflage the angler.

Fishing with a side nod will be quite successful if you manage to go behind long stems of reeds or reeds; various unevenness of the bottom of the relief and not very old snags are also attractive.

Active search for fish

The angler's attention should also be drawn to low-leaning trees, or even trees that have fallen into the water. Especially when fishing with a jig on the river.

Time of day and season

Perhaps spring is the most suitable time for fishing with a side nod. At this time, you can successfully get to the pre-spawning feast. The fish gather in large schools, and they become less timid, biting with excitement and often throughout the day. During the spawning period, the fish comes to the shallows up to one meter, and at the same time it is quite often and well caught using a side nod. Mostly males are caught. Whether to fish during the spawning period or not is already a matter of fisherman’s ethics. Everyone decides this for themselves.

After spawning, the bite subsides. The fish is exhausted, sick and is unlikely to swim for the jig. Such attachments as a worm, bloodworm, maggot, etc. will not be superfluous.

The bite will resume in a couple of days, or even weeks. There are many factors that influence the fish’s bite when fishing with a side nod. Mass flights of insects are an excellent moment for fishing with a side nod (this cannot be said about float fishing). Fish can bite on all layers of water, and sometimes even from the very surface of the water.

Fish can grab the jig all day long. But mostly from one to several approaches. The morning exit, as a rule, is at dawn and after one or two hours (this is a typical exit in fairly clear water). With moderate winds in the surf, there can be some good daytime outings.

The bite directly depends on the transparency, temperature and illumination of the water. In cloudy weather, the bite is best in cold, clear water, and, conversely, in sunny weather, in cloudy water.

During all the summer months, fishing on the side nod is quite successful. In shallow, stagnant bodies of water, the bite can be passive. When it gets too hot, algae and water bloom wildly in them, and this negatively affects the bite.

At the beginning of summer, in reservoirs, quarries and lakes, crucian carp, bream, roach and carp often approach the shore. In persistent warm weather, sometimes fish can move out into fairly shallow areas. When the weather worsens, the fish go deeper.

Fishing with a side nod from a boat

When fishing from a boat on a side nod, the fisherman does not depend on approaches to the shore of fish within reach (as when fishing from the very shore and wading). From a boat it is possible to “process” the entire body of water – from coastal shallows to deep holes. A fish is much less afraid of a boat than a fisherman standing in the water.

You need to actively look for fish. You can start by searching in the shallows, and then move towards the depths (or vice versa), after which return to the places where there were the most bites.

In such places, you can try to attract fish with the help of complementary foods. This can also be done by wading. Most often, 3-4 balls the size of a fist are thrown. But regularity is important, not quantity.

The fertilizing should not be too rich. For example, standard unicord and some kind of ballast (sand, earth, clay). A good option is feeding, to which bloodworm and maggot larvae are added. When fishing with a side nod in clear water, you should try to muddy the water in the fishing zone - throw in a few lumps of sand, earth, clay.

If you are fishing from a boat, you should anchor well. The boat should not spin around its axis, wobble or wobble at the bow. When fishing or in the wind, a long fishing rod is capable of moving a boat from anchors or cargo like a lever.

In very strong winds and on high waves, fishing with a side nod will simply be impossible.

Fishing with a side nod from a boat

If you are planning to fish from a boat, be prepared to change your anchorage frequently. Reliably standing up and removing two anchors is quite a difficult task.

When looking for fish, it doesn’t hurt to watch the surface of the water. Regular small bubbles or frequent bursts can reveal the desired school (crucian carp, roach, bream, etc.).

Fishing with a rod with a side nod

This type of fishing refers to simple active types of fishing. You can fish from the shore, boat or wade. The best option for fishing with a nod in the summer is to wade, since a fisherman moving along the shore can scare the fish more than one moving slowly in the water.

Tactics

Wiring the jig is carried out with the flow and in different ways:

  • free fall and stepwise rise: the jig falls freely to the bottom, after which it is raised 10–15 cm in short jerks until it is returned to the surface of the reservoir;
  • bottom game: the bait is lowered 10-15 cm from the bottom and the game begins for 1-2 minutes, then the jig is lowered to the bottom;
  • tapping with a finger: the jig is lowered to the bottom, raised ten centimeters and the tempo of the game is set by tapping the rod with a finger;
  • during the current - tension: the nozzle is lowered to the bottom, then the tension of the fishing line is raised a certain distance to the surface of the reservoir;
  • playing in jerks: the jig is stopped at the bottom and with a sharp jerk is raised to a height of 35-40 cm;
  • movement along the bottom using a nod;
  • dragging the bait along the bottom using a fishing rod;
  • stopping before the bite: the jig is lowered to the desired depth and left in a calm state.

Nozzles

The side nod on a summer fishing rod can be with or without bait. Bloodworms, maggots, and worms are attached to the hook. You can attach a bunch of colored threads; the color of the bait does not affect the success of fishing. Fishermen also use multi-colored beads and beads, cambrics.

Advantages

The gear is used for fishing in reeds and reed thickets. Vertical wiring protects the hook and jig from snagging. A do-it-yourself nod is made from readily available materials. The tackle allows you to deliver the bait to a precisely chosen place. The lightness and mobility of the fishing rod is used by anglers to catch fish in different places and conditions. It expands the possibilities of searching for fishing spots.

Flaws

The gear has few disadvantages. Blind and running rigs are used in different fishing conditions, so you need to have both types of fishing rods with a side guard. A long side nod for a summer fishing rod does not resist gusts of wind well and exhibits its own vibrations more strongly. The length of the device is determined based on the fishing results.

DIY side nod

Making a summer side nod

How to quickly make a side nod to a summer fishing rod. My fishing.

To make a side nod, you should immediately decide on the material. Many experts recommend using the following materials for this:

  • strips from plastic bottles, which are cut with ordinary scissors.
  • springs from a clock mechanism.
  • made of metal packaging strips that are used to secure cargo.
  • from a construction tape.
  • from a broken fishing rod or spinning rod.

It’s easy and affordable to use a plastic (at least liter) bottle that has a smooth side surface. In addition to the bottle, you need to have scissors, a needle file, a paper clip and regular thread. The body of the nod is cut out from the side surface of the bottle, and it has the following dimensions: length 20-30cm, width of one of the bases 0.7-1cm, and width of the other end (top) 0.3-0.5cm. All cut lines must be smoothed and a needle file can be used for this.

A ring is formed from a paper clip, but first you need to straighten the paper clip and make it even. The ring is made in such a way that it has two legs that will hold the ring on the top of the nod. The legs are wound with regular thread (tightly) and waterproof glue is applied.

For effective fishing, it is worth making several nods of different sizes, for different fishing conditions. Harder ones are suitable for heavy baits, and softer ones are suitable for lighter ones. As a result of experiments, you can choose a nod for a certain type of fish.

A good option for making a summer nod from a broken fishing rod or spinning rod. This option is more versatile, as it can be suitable for various fishing conditions. A nod of appropriate size and shape is cut out of the broken ring. Then the edges are smoothed with sandpaper and a file. The nod ring is made from a paper clip, as in the first option, or can be used from a broken fishing rod. The ring is also attached to the top of the nod with threads and impregnated with waterproof glue.

After manufacturing, it is advisable to decorate the nod so that it is clearly visible. Any coloring with one paint or a combination of two colors will do, then the nod will be much more noticeable. The main thing is that the slightest touch of the fish on the bait is visible.

Features of the tackle

In shallow water, you can start fishing for small fish as soon as the spring sun warms up. Among the grass and snags there are perches and crucian carp, dace, carp, ruff and even small pike. This is where catchy tackle that will not get caught on grass and snags comes in handy.

A jig is a small pellet with a hook. To attract prey, it is painted bronze, silver, golden or dark. Modern gear can glow, as it is often made of luminescent material.

The advantages of using a side nod are obvious:

  1. With its help, it is easy to tap the bottom and lure prey in the reeds and reeds. Numerous snags can be avoided thanks to vertical wiring.
  2. Accurate bait delivery is one of the main advantages of such gear. You can reach a promising point by boat or wade.
  3. A fishing rod with a jig is easy to carry from place to place. And if there is no bite for a long time, then without any problems you can look for fish in the next window, easily throwing the bait.
  4. The main advantage is the availability of gear. You can make some elements, including a side nod, with your own hands.

How to Attach a Side Nod to a Fishing Rod

To put on a nod, you first need to remove the tulip from the fishing rod. Why do we heat it slowly so that the glue loses its properties? It is advisable to do this with the help of a hair dryer, or, in extreme cases, a lighter, moving it from side to side, avoiding direct contact of the flame with the tulip.

You also need to be careful and not allow the rest of the rod to heat up. Then, wrapping the tulip ring in a rag or wearing gloves (so as not to get burned), pull it and remove it from the tip of the rod. Now we clean the surface of glue residues, both on the whip itself and inside the removed tulip ring.

Then we put the ring back, take the side nod and the thermal tube and apply them to the tulip. Thermal tubes must be cut so much that they are several centimeters longer than the leg of the side nod. We remove the tulip ring again, thread the thermal tube through the whip, then apply glue to the tip of the whip and put the tulip back on.

We wait until the glue dries and our ring will sit firmly on the rod again. Now we thread the nod leg, as shown in the figure. Next we put on the thermal tube.

The side nod is set so that the line that comes out of the rod's guide ring enters the side nod rings at an angle of 90 degrees.

Now, with the help of a lighter or hair dryer, heat the heat tube and press it into the nod. The fishing rod with a side nod is ready.

Jig with a side nod for summer fishing

The jig of a fishing rod with a side nod for summer fishing from the shore and boat is the most important adjustment element of the equipment.

But this is provided that a shock absorber with an adjustable bend of a metal spring is installed on the hook of the rod. I don’t even consider other designs of side nods that do not provide for adjusting shock absorbers.

After reviewing the material on the topic Choosing a nod for a fishing rod with a jig, novice fishermen will understand how spring side nods differ from shock absorbers of other designs.

It also gives advice and principles for choosing a jig and a side nod in the equipment of a fishing rod for summer fishing from a boat.

To catch fish in the shallows in sunny weather, I tie a homemade tin-lead gliding jig to the line of a summer fishing rod (see photo). For summer fishing on the side nod in cloudy weather and at depth, homemade jigs with polished or ground crowns are better suited.

For summer fishing near the coastline in the seaweed, in pair with the side nod of the spring system, I tie a greenish jig with a shiny or dull bronze crown to a fishing line. The choice of jig color for summer fishing depends on the illumination of the reservoir.

A few tips related to adjusting the side nod on a summer fishing rod to match the jig chosen for fishing.

Side nod fastening

In order to quickly and without any problems attach this tackle, you will need a small piece of rubber. You only need to make two parallel holes in it. You need to insert the tip of your rod into one of them, and the side nod into the second. If it is made of metal, then using a rubber mount is not recommended. Because metal is a material that will quickly ruin soft rubber. But if the nod is made of plastic, then rubber is the ideal material for fastening.

You can also use a nail or strong wire. For convenience, if you decide to use a nail, its head is bitten off and bent at an angle of 30-90 degrees. The bend should be located approximately in the middle. The curved nail is wrapped with strong threads and lubricated with glue. The workpiece should remain in this position until it dries completely. The nail is then secured to the top of the rod using electrical tape. And to its second end you can attach a nod, also using reliable electrical tape.

How to secure a side nod

A very simple fastening is made from a piece of rubber in which 2 parallel holes are made. The rod tip goes into one hole, and the nod is inserted into the second. The rubber mount is more suitable for nods that are made not of metal, but of a material such as plastic. The fact is that metal nods quickly disable such a mount.

As an option, we can offer a fastening structure made of a nail, 5010 cm long (possibly made of wire). To make the nail more suitable for this design, the head is bitten off and then bent at an angle of 30-90 degrees, somewhere in the middle. After this, the metal blank is wrapped with thread, coated with glue and left until completely dry. Then, the dried structure is applied to the tip of the rod and wrapped with electrical tape. A nod is attached to the free end of the workpiece in the same way (using electrical tape).

How does a fishing rod with a side nod work?

Such gear consists of a telescopic rod, the length of which can vary from 3 to 7 m. For example, for fishing from a boat or wading it is better to take a shorter rod. Up to about 5 m. If this is fishing with nod tackle from the shore, then the best option is a longer rod.

Moreover, it can be either with or without pass rings. Therefore, either a reel is installed, or the equipment is wound on a small reel, which is attached to the fishing rod closer to the tip. The rod itself should be light, because you will have to constantly hold it in your hands. Another requirement is a strict system. Due to this, the angler will feel the movement of the jig and use a more effective game.

The next component is the fishing line. Some anglers recommend using monofilament with a cross-section of about 0.2 mm. However, given that crucian carp is a rather cautious fish, it is better to take a thinner line - about 0.12-0.16 mm. Its color is also important. Transparent and white are not quite suitable for a summer nodding fishing rod. Green or brown fishing line will be much less noticeable.

When installing gear, preference is given to green fishing line

Now let's move on to the most important thing - jigs. Shiny and bright ones will not work. They will scare away the crucian carp. Whereas darkened jigs attract him at any time of the year. Brass and copper-colored jigs also perform well on nodding tackle.

The shape and size of the bait plays an important role. It is preferable to fish with jigs of the “drop”, “boat” or “ant” type. The size is average - approximately 5-6 mm in length, and in width - no more than 3 mm. Of course, you can always experiment with a jig. There are times when crucian carp bite more actively on tackle with a side nod with a brighter or larger bait. However, most often, elongated thin jigs are effective, the length of which, together with the hook, does not exceed 10-12 mm.

Another important part of such tackle is the nod. You can buy it at a fishing store or make it yourself. For example, from wire, string or a plastic clamp, which are covered with electrical tape of different colors or painted with bright varnish. The nod should be about 20-25 cm long and have good springing properties. All this will allow the angler to feel even the most cautious bite.

Side nod is an excellent solution for snags

The side nod has recently become quite popular among active fishing enthusiasts.

This fishing is not designed for lazy fishermen.

Being a popular fishing activity, it is in many ways similar to spinning predator hunting.

The same wanderings along the shores overgrown with wild roses, when you have to simultaneously brush off mosquitoes and unhook the fishing line from the bushes, make test casts to the most seemingly attractive and mysterious places where the fish should definitely be standing.

But the fish does not know about this, and often in such beautiful places, in the opinion of the fisherman, there is not a bite.

And so you have to walk further along the shore, looking for your treasured window among the grass, snags and other “saplings”.

For some, this is spring fishing, for others, there is nothing better than fishing on a side nod on a summer morning among dense thickets of golden egg capsules. But let’s focus on spring fishing, since it’s still spring.

Often the most catchy places on a spring river are thickets of dry grass, sedge, old reeds and willow bushes standing in the water. Rivers sometimes take a long time to reach their banks.

How can one determine that there are fish in such “strong” places? And it’s very simple: probably more than one fisherman, wandering in the “swamps” through melt water among coastal small forests, scared away large fish that were literally under his feet, and then quickly went into the bushes, raising a wave.

Since the water in spring can be cold, like in winter, the fish simply come out to bask in shallow waters warmed by the sun. Here, in the old sedge and dry reeds, there are a lot of different small living creatures in the form of larvae, worms and beetles. And among the flooded bushes there are already enough insects that have fallen into the water. The bushes are also good shelters, with warmer water than in the river flow.

Read the material “Spring in Special Places”

But the trouble is that you can’t catch fish here with a float rod, bottom and feeder, even if it splashes in front of your eyes at a distance of 6-8 meters. It seems that she is aware of the complete weakness of a fisherman with a simple fishing rod, and will poison the soul even more, diving, splashing and almost snorting in the coastal bushes, mocking the klutz fisherman...

And only fishing with a side nod can bring prey, luring the crafty fish out of the bushes and grass with a jig. And here there is no need for bait, which is already enough in the thickets.

While your fellow fishermen are mixing bait on the shore, looking for the far and near edges with a marker weight, and unwinding the feeders, you can already catch a couple of good fish, for example, bream, ide, sorghum or chub. This large fish often stands in thickets at a depth of no more than half a meter.

You just need to very quietly approach the fishing spot and just as quietly throw the jig with bloodworms, dung worms or maggots into the gaps between the bushes or reeds.

If the fish stands in this place, then the bite often follows right there. If there is no bite, then you should lift the jig from the bottom and make several oscillating movements with the bait, tapping it on the bottom.

After catching fish, you can safely move to another place. Only after some time can you return to your previous catchable place, which will be occupied by the newly arrived ide or bream.

This is a minus of fishing in shallow water in small nooks among the grass, where several fish are cramped at once. But the plus, as already mentioned, is the active sport fishing on the banks of a beautiful river, where spring birds click, whistle and trill to everyone’s attention.

The side nod can be spring or silicone, which is used for catching pike perch with a spoon or jig with a sprat. All you need is an attachment for moving the side nod to the side, which makes the bite more noticeable. After all, the nod is located at the tip of the rod, the length of which is often 7-8 meters. Flat lavsan nods are also used, but they are difficult to see at a long distance.

Read the material “Gun owners may be required to wear identification marks”

The main requirement for a fishing rod is lightness. Carbon-fiber rods are the lightest, but they are also the most fragile, which makes it necessary to protect them from any blows, even weak ones. Composite and fiberglass rods are strong and simple, like the “brute force”, but much heavier. It will be difficult to keep them suspended for a long time, but... tolerable.

The jig can be of any shape and weight, but a miniature tackle with a thin fishing line, 0.12 mm in diameter, and a small tungsten jig, dark for a bright day and silver for a gray, foggy morning, works better.

Unexpected success was once brought to me by a mothless goat, which in winter was good at catching a wide variety of fish from the ice. Here, in open water, in the grass, a large roach attacked it, but only with the addition of a bloodworm head. Then other fish took this jig, but still in the same way, with the addition of a bloodworm or a worm.

Apparently, as a baitless jig, this jig does not work at shallow depths, but it attracts fish, especially if there is something edible on the hook.

The fishing tactic is that the bait with bait is lowered vertically on a fishing line from the tip of the rod, like in a hole in winter. Usually small gaps and windows are chosen among grass and bushes.

The jig either lies motionless on the bottom, or makes smooth movements near the bottom, touching it and raising the mud. It should be taken into account that the fishing line for such fishing is always shorter than the rod, and after hooking it is necessary to release the fishing line from the reel so that its length is equal to the length of the rod, that is, sufficient for landing fish on a “dead” rig.

Read the material “Fleece clothing is a reliable choice.”

You can use a rod with guides and a spinning reel, but you will have to make a side nod so that it can freely pass the line.

From somewhere, huge crucian carp suddenly came to our city river. More than once I have caught similar strong crucian carp from a motor boat along with bream and ide on the swift Volga stream.

And at the mouth of the Bolshaya Kokshaga, at the confluence with the Volga, there are many of these silvery beauties. Now they have partially become sedentary in our waters, living in oxbow lakes and bays, and some of them rise from below to our places every spring. And during this move along the Malaya and Bolshaya Kokshaga, spring crucian fishing begins.

This is a fishing holiday, when every now and then you come across fish weighing up to a kilogram, and half a kilogram is common. But the banks of the river within the city at this time are densely packed with fishermen so that sometimes there is nowhere to stand. But this kind of fishing is not for me, even if the fish are large.

This morning Pashka and I are trying to find a place on the shore that is at least somewhat free for fishing. But all the places had probably been occupied since the night before.

I remember that downstream there is a large pool, where not everyone can reach through potholes and lowlands, still filled with melt water, even though spring is already in full swing. We wander there, crossing streams and flooded lowlands in waders.

But fishermen also sat on the banks of the pool. Only the willow bushes standing in the water were free. Who will go there with a fishing rod?

Read the material “Journey along the river bed”

Stopping at the bushes, I suddenly saw how our steps stirred the water near the nearby taliks, and something splashed under the branches with young foliage. And only the big breaker remained on the calm water, swirling around the edges like funnels.

It also splashed at the neighboring bush. There was clearly some kind of large fish that had entered from the current into the solid willow forest. - Saw? - I push my friend. “So he’s not blind,” he fusses, grabbing the fishing rods.

I had a fishing rod with a side nod. I already found myself in a similar situation in the spring and built some gear. Pashka tried to fish with a float, but immediately caught a branch with his hook and broke the fishing line.

And I aimed at the gap between the bushes, which shone like a window among the thick branches, six or seven meters from the shore. Going quietly into the water, as far as the raised “swamps” allowed, I lowered a small jig with a small and nimble dung worm into the gap.

Here is the bottom... It’s no more than a meter away. Small, but there are fish here. This can be seen even from the bushes, which are noticeably shaking and clearly not from the current, which simply was not there.

He slightly raised the jig and immediately the nod sharply bent downwards, and a shock was noticeably transmitted through his hand. Bite!..

A stubborn fish came briskly on the line, glistening in the shallow water. This is a crucian carp, and not a small one. Soon he splashed around in the fish tank.

Read the material “Lessons in reelless fishing on a summer cottage lake”

They didn’t take crucian carp often, but when changing places, one or two crucian carp always grabbed the jig. Pashka, unable to bear it, built something similar to my gear, but the role of the side nod was performed by the flexible tip of the rod, which also coped with this role.

And my friend began to catch medium and large crucian carp from time to time. The morning was a success...

What is a side nod?

When they come to a pond, fishermen pay attention to those who are sitting not with a classic fishing rod, but with a slightly modified one. It looks like a regular fishing rod, but slightly lighter in shape

There is no float on this fishing rod at all, but there is a side nod. In this case, the bait is a summer jig. This bait has been known for a long time, but has gained great popularity only in recent years. This is due to the fact that now it is possible to purchase a light rod, the weight of which allows you to swing it for a long time.

The jig is thrown to any place where there is no algae. Once cast, the rod can be manipulated in a variety of ways. This fishing method is especially relevant in wild rivers.

Setting up a side nod for summer fishing

Before setting the side nod spring, we select the desired jig for summer fishing - by weight, shape, color and wiring features.

The photo above in the text shows tin planning jigs of a flattened shape, ideal for summer fishing in the shallows under the control of a side nod on a long fishing rod with a vertical line rig.

We tie the selected jig to the fishing line of the summer fishing rod and then set up the side nod spring. For what:

We immerse the jig on the fishing line of a summer fishing rod into the water, but the bait should not touch the bottom. With the correct thickness of the fishing line and the weight of the jig in the water, the fishing line should stretch into a string.

For now, without paying attention to the bend of the side nod spring, we are convinced that there is not even a hint of rings of residual deformation on the line of the summer fishing rod under the weight of the jig in the water.

Then we adjust the nod, bending the side spring of the shock absorber into a straight line, taking into account the weight of the jig in the water.

For those interested, I offer the technology for manufacturing a spring system nod from a clock spring.

Fishing rod equipment

To make summer fishing enjoyable, the fisherman’s equipment must be not only catchy, but also comfortable. Therefore, it is recommended to choose a fishing rod with the following parameters:

Weight. You will have to work with the fishing rod all day, so its weight should be as small as possible. When purchasing, it is better to hold each rod and understand how comfortably it fits in your hand. Rigidity. By choosing the optimal rod stiffness option, you can easily feel the tackle and control the jig when retrieving. Length. This parameter is selected based on the location where the fishing will take place. A rod 350–450 cm long will be sufficient when fishing from a boat in a place with a depth of 1.5–3 meters. If hunting will be carried out from the shore, then the length of the fishing rod should be at least 5–6 meters. Rings

Read Fishing for pike perch in winter - tips on bait and tackle

This element does not play an important role when fishing with a jig in summer. Some fishermen use a simple Bolognese fishing rod, equipping it with pins

Rods for side nodding should be non-separable or have well-locking knees. Otherwise, they may simply fold or fly out when casting.

How to properly tie a jig to a fishing line Diagram of how to learn how to tie a hook to a fishing line Tourist knots - types and methods of tying Gardner's loop for a feeder: how to tie

It is recommended to choose a plastic, small, inertial or spinning reel with a spool size of 2500–3000 and a friction brake. The line can be monofilament 0.2 mm thick or braided 0.15 mm thick. It is better to choose dark brown color. It will allow you to control the wiring and will not scare away the prey. At least thirty meters of fishing line must be wound on the reel.

Selection of jigs

Summer jigs should have an elongated shape. Their width should be about 3 mm and their length up to 6 mm. It is best to choose models with a darkened body.

You can use baitless jigs or tackle on which you can attach natural bait. Attaching maggots or bloodworms simplifies vertical retrieving, while using mothless baits on long rods will require some skill from the angler.

What should the nod be like?

The side nod is selected more carefully. It must match the rod. For fishing rods of 6 meters, the guard should be 20 cm long. If the rod is shorter, then the nod may not be so long. The bait must have elasticity, match the weight of the jig and be sufficiently elastic. In this case, even the most cautious bites will be felt. Also, the side nod for summer fishing should have a bright color so that it is easily visible in the water.

All anglers place the guard on the rod in their own way. The side mount is considered the best for visual perception, and with a direct position it is better to hook and fish out prey.

Line and jig for side nod

At shallow depths, a light jig is used; in the current and as the depth increases, a heavier one is used, or the equipment is made heavier using pellet sinkers, securing them to the fishing line above the light jig by about 20 cm. A summer fishing rod with a side nod is equipped with a fishing line of 0.12 - 0 .25 mm, thickness depends on the intended trophy, in many cases a fishing line with a cross-section of 0.18 mm is enough

For a good game, it is important that, under the weight of the jig, the line is pulled into a straight line and not in “rings”

The load capacity of the side nod must correspond to the weight of the jig; under its weight, the nod should bend by 30° - 35°. The jig can be of any color and shape, the main thing is that it looks like the insects that live in a given body of water. Some of the most popular jigs, which are used to catch many types of fish, are the “pellet”, “droplet”, and “ant”. Among the colors, the most universal are gray, black, dark green.

Sometimes brightly colored jigs are also effective, usually in muddy water when catching predatory fish; in general, you need to experiment with colors on the spot. The size of the hook on the jig is selected depending on the fish you are going to catch. For example, for perch you need a jig with hook No. 5–6, and for roach No. 4–5 according to domestic numbering (see Classification and numbering of fishing hooks). In summer, fishing with jigs without bait is less common than in winter.

This is explained by the fact that creating the necessary game with a bulky summer fishing rod is much more difficult than with a compact winter fishing rod. The bait used is maggots, dung worms, caddis flies, large bloodworms, etc. For a bait such as a worm, you need to take a jig with an elongated fore-end. Some fishermen successfully catch fish on a piece of foam rubber, dipping it into some kind of dip before casting it, what this is is described in the article How to make dips for fishing. When you plan to catch large fish, you need to choose a jig with a hook made of thick wire so that the fish’s lip does not get cut when fishing.

How to fish with a side nod

It all depends on the choice of equipment, and, in fact, on the place where you fish. Any body of water where the water is standing or the current is very weak is suitable. You will have to constantly move, because the goal is to search for active schools of fish. There is always competition for food within the flock. Therefore, if you find a fish, it will bite until they notice something wrong and decide that they need to change their location. We don't stop there. The fish must be found again. Sometimes bait works. But if it quickly falls to the bottom, it will be of no use. And there is no point in tying yourself to this place. The school of fish will still go to another place.

Think about where you will fish from. Ideal options are dams, piers, and walkways. You can put your waders on something warm and go fishing in early spring. The entire area along the coast is our target area. This is where fish most often end up after the ice melts. It’s easiest to fish this way in windy weather. Then you can get closer to potential prey much easier. Practice has shown that blind equipment causes a lot of inconvenience. Especially if you need to lose the line while fishing. If the fish does not get tired, then it is quite possible that the line will break and the fish will go to depth. You always need the opportunity to drop the line.

Making a nod

Naturally, how can we forget about making a side nod - the most important detail of our gear. To create the product yourself, you can use lavsan or a plastic bottle. When making a summer side nod with our own hands, we will have to cut a suitable strip in width, fitting it to a jig of a certain weight.

In the same way as with fishing rods, it is better to have several nods of different lengths and carrying capacity when fishing, configured for one or another jig. The task of a finely adjusted tackle is to be able to show the moment the jig touches the bottom. When we make a side nod, we need to remember that without load it can be slightly curved upward, but with weight it takes on a horizontal position or sags slightly.

For the tip of the nod, it is useful to stock up on a flag that acts as a signaling device (to make it easier to see) - it can be made, for example, from tape and paper. We cut out a square 3 by 3 cm from white paper, paint it with a red marker, then cover it with wide tape on both sides (so that the paint does not come off if it gets into water), and glue this red square to the tip of our side nod.

It remains to discuss the attachment of the side nod to the tip of the rod. When fishing with a running rig, we will use a regular tulip of any rod. You can view the mounting instructions in the video below:

The question of equipment does not require a clear answer, because in many cases the “deaf” method remains the only acceptable one - for example, when you have to look for fish under overhanging tree branches, when pushing the tackle through a wall of vegetation is not an easy task in itself.

On the other hand, when catching large fish, say, carp with a side nod, a running rig will allow you not only to save the rod, but also to win in a fight with a trophy specimen. Happy fishing!

In conclusion, I recommend watching the video: catching large carp on a side nod with a bamboo stick.

What is a nod for?

Fishing gear designed for fishing in winter has its own subtleties. For example, nods (gatehouses) are considered famous floats. Therefore, the device is not suitable for summer fishing, just as summer indicators are not suitable for winter fishing. With the help of a nod, they catch fish in difficult conditions , for example, in rivers with fast currents. However, the accessory is also effective in reservoirs with a calm current.

By nodding, the likelihood of a catch increases. Fishermen with many years of experience have noted this device as effective and are constantly modernizing it. The nod has important functions:

  • responds instantly to a bite,
  • in different water thicknesses, you can control the fluctuation of the bait.

Various materials are used to make such a piece of gear. It is important that the device can withstand very low temperatures and not break during bending. Therefore, winter fishing tackle is really subjected to tough tests, therefore, not every material can withstand this.

The gatehouse must be tough - this is an equally important factor. There is no specific rule for choosing material, but depending on different bodies of water and low temperatures, professionals recommend using the following:

  • bamboo,
  • sheet lavsan has low rigidity and is intended for sensitive products,
  • wild boar wool,
  • plastic material is more rigid, but cannot withstand low temperatures,
  • The most durable materials include metal springs or strips.

Homemade tackle with a side nod

If we asked ourselves the question of assembling a fishing rod on our own, then we need to make sure that fishing with a nod is comfortable. Let's start with the rod. Hard carbon fiber or carbon fiber is suitable, which could provide a very fast action, and at the same time, a hard, instant hooking of fish. Rods for side casting must satisfy a number of requirements: be light, because you will have to hold the gear in your hands for several hours if you are fishing by wading, and definitely powerful.

To a certain extent, these requirements are met by fly-type forms - I recommend that you pay attention to them. The standard of such products can be called Shimano rods, and besides them, perhaps, Maver, Sabaneev, Banax, Mikado, Black Hole

Modern fishing rods are additionally reinforced with organic fibers, but blanks made of carbon are especially good.

When fishing with a jig, we will need a rod with a length of 4 to 8 meters (depending on fishing conditions, from the shore or a boat), and it is better to have several in stock, with different lengths. Too long, these plug rods are not at all appropriate here, because... with a large length, the nod will not be visible at all. Fishing constantly with a very long blank is quite tiring, and by the end of the day your arms may already fall off. To transport the fishing rod, it is better to use a hard case or tube-case.

Length of a summer fishing rod with a side nod

The length of a summer fishing rod for fishing with a jig with a side nod and summer equipment is selected in accordance with the distance to the active fishing area. In this regard, perhaps some fishermen will find my many years of experience in shortening a summer telescopic fishing rod to the required length using spacer wedges useful.

The design and length of a summer fishing rod for side-nod fishing with a jig is selected not only in proportion to the distance of the summer fishing object from the shore or boat, but also from the depth of the lake, river or pond. But problems may arise here due to the wrong choice of rod class.

For fishermen who came to the page from a search engine, I provide a link to the material “Setting up a spring side nod for fishing.” This operation will be needed in the process of equipping a summer fishing rod of the appropriate weight in the water with a sinker or a tin gliding jig.

Next, read a short article about the correct choice of the thickness and quality of fishing line for the side nod in the equipment of a fishing rod for summer fishing from the shore of a reservoir or from a boat.
