Bite forecast in the Kemerovo region

Fishing on the Tom River

Fishing in the Tom River is very interesting.
This interest is fueled by the opportunity to catch really large, trophy fish. Fishing on the Tom River, especially if it is accompanied by the capture of grayling, taimen, large pike or burbot, will be remembered for a long time. When you go fishing on the Tom River, you are left with a feeling of spaciousness and freedom. This expanse of wide floodplain, the width of the river itself, the current gradually moving huge masses of water, evoke a feeling of peace. Therefore, not only fishing, but also just relaxation attracts a huge number of people to the Tom River in the summer.

Caring for the environment

In the Kemerovo region, surface and groundwater have been heavily polluted for a long time due to irresponsible human activities. People, extracting minerals from the depths of the earth, did not consider it necessary to take care of such important natural resources, which in some places led to irreversible consequences. Waste from industrial enterprises, factories, and coal mines was dumped directly into rivers; many streams and small rivulets, which provided large rivers with a good supply of clean, life-giving moisture, were destroyed; with the melting snow, hundreds of kilograms of chemicals harmful to representatives of the underwater world entered the reservoirs. Which, naturally, had the most negative impact on the population of many valuable, and not only, species of fish. Currently, the situation has practically been corrected: industrial waste is cleaned before being discharged into the river, and some sections of the rivers are being stocked with fish. Fish stocks are gradually increasing, but the water quality in many reservoirs still leaves much to be desired.

Fish in the Tom River

Once upon a time, twenty-nine species of fish lived in the Tom River. Among them were also valuable species of fish: Pacific and Siberian lamprey, sturgeon, sterlet, taimen, lenok, nelma, minnow, cheese, river whitefish, muksun, grayling. Climate change and human economic activity have led to significant shallowing and pollution of the river bed. The river's fish stocks have also declined.

But recently, the water quality in the river has improved significantly. Peled, muksun, sterlet, and sturgeon began to return to Tom, and taimen and grayling began to be caught. In addition to these species of fish, the river today is inhabited by pike perch, pike, burbot, ide, perch, ruffe, crucian carp, chebak, dace, minnow, Siberian tench, gudgeon, Siberian char, and Siberian spined loach.

Characteristics of the Tom River

The Tom River begins in the Republic of Khakassia, in Kuznetsk Alatau. to determine exactly where the source of the Tom River . It is formed as a result of the confluence of many streams. And this is not the only feature of Tomi.

The length of the Tom River is 827 kilometers. In the upper reaches it is a typical mountain river. In the middle and lower reaches, it gradually carries its waters along the Kuznetsk Basin and the West Siberian Plain. Tom is the largest river in the Kemerovo region. But the fact is that, perhaps even more rightly, the main river of the region could be called Condoma.

Before the merger of Kondoma with Tom, Kondoma is significantly longer than Tom. The nature of the confluence also suggests that it is more likely that the Tom flows into the Condoma. But it is what it is.

Tributaries of the Tom River. The following tributaries flow into the Tom River: Mras-Su, Kondoma, Upper Ters, Middle Ters, Lower Ters, Taydon. These are the largest rivers. Many small rivers and streams also flow into the Tom.

Where does the Tom River flow? The Tom flows into one of the largest rivers in Russia - the Ob. The mouth of the Tom River is located 60 kilometers downstream from the city of Tomsk. On the Tom River there are such large cities as Novokuznetsk, Kemerovo, Tomsk.

Back in the eighties of the last century, hydrofoil boats sailed along the river all the way to Novokuznetsk. Tugs were hauling barges. Today the Tom River is much shallower. Dredging and cleaning of the riverbed are not carried out. Therefore, the section of the Tom River from the city of Kemerovo to the city of Novokuznetsk is no longer navigable.

Winter hunting underwater: what can you catch in Novokuznetsk Tom?

Novokuznetsk has long become famous throughout the country for its poor ecology. Local media constantly write about constant emissions into the atmosphere and the frequent “black sky” regime. What about rivers and reservoirs? What is the situation in the Tom River and are there any fish there? Avid fisherman Andrei Klimov answered questions about the quality and quantity of the catch in the reservoirs of the Novokuznetsk region.

“Fishing is my hobby. I go underwater 3 times a week. We have fish, and what kind of fish. There are a lot of fish, but those who don’t know how to fish don’t catch them. My fishing is more likely not fishing, but hunting. In a special scuba suit, I go underwater in an open area, not under the ice. Ice fishing always requires a fishing rod. I go down to a depth of up to five meters on average. In the water I hunt fish and shoot with a gun. This is permitted and is not considered poaching. Such hunting and fishing is considered poaching only if you go underwater with scuba gear,” the fisherman said.

A special suit provides thermal insulation and allows you to stay in the water for a long time. On average, Andrey hunts for three hours. According to the fisherman, everyone should have their own hobby.

“In the Ordzhonikidze region, where the river flows into a warm canal, carp, grass carp, crucian carp, perch, and pike are most often found there. And from the ice you can catch a lot of roach and pike, especially in the Chistye Prudy quarries. In Tom itself, under the bridge, there are mainly bleak and sorozhka, and there is also burbot,” shared Andrey.

— Do you eat fish from our Tom? Many people say that even if you can catch fish, eating it is not recommended.

“Of course, our whole family eats fish. It is normal and edible, our river is not that dirty and the presence of fish in it is proof of this. We used to have a lot of fish in Mezhdurechensk, but now they actually dump waste there, coal into the river and there are very few fish. The waste does not reach us, but in some places in Tom there are even grayling, not in the Central, but in the Ordzhonikidze region, and they are found only in clean water,” the fisherman explained.

Andrey said that fishing and hunting is a rather dangerous hobby; you can dive in and not come back up. An untrained fisherman and a novice should not go down alone. Danger can lurk anywhere.

“They might drag you under a log and that’s it. This kind of fishing is, of course, dangerous, but I like it. I don’t shoot all the fish, I shoot them selectively; I need to find them first, then catch them and shoot them. This is a real hunt,” said the Novokuznetsk resident.

— What was the biggest fish you ever caught in the Novokuznetsk region?

“I caught white carp, 28 kg, and there was also a big white carp, 14 kg. Most often I go underwater; I fish with a rod only in the summer. The peak of fishing, of course, is in winter. In winter, the water is cleaner, so you can catch more fish, and the fish themselves are larger. In clear water you can see further and the water clarity is better. The winter fishing season approximately begins from December 15-20 and lasts until March, about 2-3 months,” Andrey shared the secrets of winter fishing.

— Is underwater fishing an expensive hobby?

“If you take all the uniforms from scratch, then you need at least 50 thousand rubles, and if you add to this a boat for the summer, it will be a very decent amount. But a hobby is something that makes us happy and it’s not worth wasting money on it,” concluded Andrey.

Kiya River

Kiya flows from south to north of the region. This waterway is called the cleanest and fishiest river in all of Kuzbass. The cleanliness is primarily due to the fact that in the upper reaches of the Kiya there are no functioning enterprises that would pollute the water. The banks are rocky, and in some places tributaries flow into Kiya in the form of waterfalls. White salmon, which demands clean water, happily spawns in this river, and here you can also find valuable fish species such as sturgeon and sterlet. Hunting for grayling can be successful - it is found here in abundance, in addition, burbot, pike perch, pike, ide, perch, minnow, roach, loach, gudgeon, bream are common, and taimen is also found. Access to fishing spots can be difficult; the best catches are when fishing from a boat. But you need to be prepared for the fact that even in the deserted upper reaches the most fishing holes can be occupied.
