How to catch crucian carp using a spinning rod

Conditions for catching crucian carp in the spring with a spinning rod. Choosing a reservoir. Where you won't be able to catch crucian carp with a spinning rod. The specifics of this unusual fishing, fishing tactics, bait, retrieve. Crucian carp bites.

Spring is a fickle and changeable time for spinning fishing. Interesting topics are layered one on top of the other, and often you plan one thing, but in fact it turns out completely different.

One day two years ago I was planning to catch pike perch in April before the ban on catching it. I went out to the river with a reasonable hope of outwitting a respectable specimen, but for some reason the fanged one was completely on strike and did not want to respond to the most ingenious wiring and bait. But the asp hatched instead of the pike perch, and in 30 minutes of unforgettable zhora I saw twelve wonderful bites, including some just hits and escapes, but still managed to catch several decent beauties. It was an excellent spring fishing, an unforgettable half hour flew by in an instant!

Last year, remembering the amazing asp catches, I went to the reservoir with an eye on successfully catching asp. But the winter turned out to be cold, spring was late, the asps hid somewhere, becoming elusive, and in mid-April they simply spawned unexpectedly, releasing eggs near the shores, practically under the fishermen’s feet. After spawning, the chances of catching a large asp have dropped significantly, and carrying small fish relying on quantity is not at all interesting to me personally.

In mid-April, we can already catch pike, but in the second half of this month, usually small toothy ones take the bait, and there are problems with large perch, so I decided to do ultralight fishing, targeting, first of all, rudd, chub and ide. But, as usual, spring confused all plans, and... crucian carp began to bite on the spinning rod!

Conditions for catching crucian carp using a spinning rod

Based on my experience, I can say that in terms of the number of crucian carp caught, a spinning rod will never catch a feeder or float rod; this is possible with rudd or chub, but not with crucian carp. But in terms of size, crucian carp always wins on a spinning rod in the spring. In general, it is much more difficult to catch small crucian carp with a spinning rod than large ones, and I rarely had fish smaller than 400 g. Apparently, only from a certain age does this cunning fish become more “arrogant” and begins to feed on large larvae, and at times even fry. Accordingly, it is better to catch it with a spinning rod in reservoirs where specimens of 400-800 grams are found in abundance . And it’s good if large areas of the bottom are hard, sandy, with bottom “grass” - I have never managed to catch crucian carp with a spinning rod on a muddy bottom, only sand brought bites. The presence of bottom vegetation is mandatory - crucian carp have nothing to do on bare sand, they avoid such areas, unless they swim in passing on their business. And in the “thickets” he diligently searches for all kinds of larvae, primarily dragonfly larvae, long before they emerge to the surface. Although I can remember two excellent fish caught on ultralight gear, a kilogram crucian carp and a 4 kg carp, caught on almost bare sand, where there was almost no bottom vegetation. But this is not the rule, but the exception, so to speak, rare surprises of spinning curiosity - checking those places “where it never bites.”

Is it possible to catch crucian carp using a spinning rod?

Spinning is used to catch predatory species of river fish, but recently, due to the emergence of a huge number of different gear and baits, catching crucian carp using this device has become popular. The main thing is to choose the right equipment for spinning. Although some fishermen prefer to use a float rod the old fashioned way.

Crucian carp, like many other small river fish, are wonderfully caught using spinning rods, especially if you choose the right place for fishing. It is imperative to take into account the leisurely lifestyle of this river inhabitant. This fish gets food from the muddy bottom of the river, so the bait should sink closer to the bottom of the reservoir. Accordingly, bottom fishing techniques are used.

Did you know? The Germans call crucian carp "peasant carp".

Choosing a reservoir

I try to choose a body of water large enough to have operational space and allow me to walk around freely with a spinning rod without interfering with the crowd of floaters or bottom fishers. For me, such reservoirs are, first of all, shallow, quickly warmed-up quarries and lakes, with maximum depths of up to 5-6 meters, and with a predominant depth of 2-3 m, where large crucian carp like to stand. It is significant that the presence of pike and pike perch does not in any way bother the peace-loving crucian carp, so I cannot agree with the statements that, supposedly, crucian carp are best caught in places where there are no predatory fish. And clear spring water is not an obstacle to fishing, usually lakes and quarries, for the most part, are distinguished by clear water, however, crucian carp in the spring is caught not only at dawn, but also at the height of daylight hours.

True, I cannot explain the lack of bites closer than 15-20 meters from the shore - either a decent crucian carp simply does not approach the shores, or is afraid to take it at short distances in clear water, and it is the second reason that seems more likely. But I don’t fish further than 30 m - the most popular ultra-latite weights up to one gram do not allow casting over a significant distance.

Everything has been practically gutted from the rivers, ponds, lakes and such crucian carp in I caught it and saw it in the wild about 10-11 years ago. Of course, your fishing is impressive, not only with crucian carp. The pike are monsters, the perch that would peck at us over and over again, probably only in childhood was. GruzOK Fish Broke a Chinese, cheap miracle. I don't care. Be thankful that the harsh Yakut crucian carp didn’t chew through the boat. these can. ps Well, this miracle spinning rod was not damaged during shipment, it was damaged already when it was produced) When it broke, judging by the fibers, it is the cheapest of cheap materials) To catch these monsters, you need to take a Nevskaya type reel and tie it to a ski pole , Soviet production, it will last forever)

hektor Yeah, that's how you catch them. You see a standing crucian carp and hook it with a tee. Along the way, this is poaching, but it’s also not good because when pulling blindly, a lot of fish are injured, BUT seeing the fish and hooking only it reduces the number of wounded fish. But. I wish you a landing net. . Because they are big and lifting it with weight of course takes the lip off.

Awer 76 The spinning rods were not damaged during transportation, it was clearly a technological defect. They broke in a place where they are no longer flexible enough, but not yet strong enough. They broke not from fishing for crucian carp, but from hooking when hooked, and not even with a strong jerk. In other words, spinig sucks.

Dima Pestov Of course your spinning rod will break. Everyone will break like this if the spinning rod is held at such an angle when fishing. Sorry, but I have never seen such smart people. By the way, why do you take such light spinning rods? At least a crocodile is needed here. You could also take an ultralight with 1-5 grams of dough.

Waldemar Schibilin Slava, maybe someone has already written in the comments, then I will repeat. In the future, never use a spinning rod for a multiplier with a stationary reel, since this spinning rod has a fundamentally different load distribution (when the line goes along the rings located on top of the rod)

Pavel Batkovich, damn it, Slava, you're killing the fisherman in me with your video, why did I write about crocodile spinning, but because it's not expensive, plus it's quite light and powerful 2.70 and the tip is about 5 mm thick, and it won't bend under your little things )

Nikas Smirnitsky Well, damn it, your fish is wild and unharmed) Crucian carp for lures? Holy crap) And when using a reel, Slava, always lower the bracket with your hand, not with the handle. Otherwise, the reel will live no longer than the spinning rod. I stepped on this rake myself)

Alexey Evleikin Tsurina's spinning turned out to be a piece of shit. I would have bought an ordinary cheap crocodile spinning rod in the store, and it would have been more useful. Such a mess is already funny. Crucian carp are monsters, as expected for Siberia.

Dima Gogolenko I had a heart attack 3 times while I was watching crucian carp pecking at a spinner. How did you swim so close to them? Please repeat with a normal spinning rod or just a hook with fishing line

Lures for crucian carp

The more actively spring crucian carp feeds on natural animal food, the easier it is to catch it. Although I also remember an interesting episode involving the capture of a crucian carp that was not feeding. I just noticed him in shallow water in the “grass”, the fish froze, his head stuck out a little above the water, it felt like he was lurking in ambush, like a pike. As soon as a miniature turntable was thrown under his nose, he immediately attacked it like a real predator.

For the most part, I fish with rubber – the most reliable option. And it doesn’t have to be small at all. It has happened more than once that crucian carp attacks a two-inch rubber band without hesitation, especially if it is narrow, in the form of a worm or dragonfly larva, in some amazing way often completely swallowing all five centimeters of silicone. But it happens that only inch tires bring good results. Both regular silicone works and edible silicone, which gives off some kind of cheese smell. These “stinkers” also add confidence when fishing for such gourmets as crucian carp.

Techniques and tactics of catching crucian carp using a spinning rod

After finding a good area for catching crucian carp, you should accurately throw the tackle into a section of the river with dense vegetation. It would be a good idea to feed the chosen place before fishing. It is better to cast at an angle of 90° so that this rather leisurely fish notices the bait.

The bait is moved along the bottom slowly, with long pauses (10 seconds or more). When stopping, you need to move it, but so that the weight remains in place. Sudden movements of the bait should be excluded, as the crucian carp may simply get scared of them. In the daytime, almost the same actions are repeated in the water column, and not along the bottom.

Important! When fishing, you should not make strong jerks, so as not to tear off the lip of the crucian carp. A large specimen should be led to the shore under water, and then thrown ashore with a sharp jerk or caught with a net. If you pull up, then this fish, once above the water, will actively twitch and may break off

.
Long casts should be alternated with short ones, as the crucian carp may be near the shore. Reed thickets are especially attractive to him. It often lives at the border of the beginning of this vegetation and swims into the gaps between them. If there is no bite near the shore, then you should make casts to places further away from it, but promising ones.

When the crucian carp bites and the line is pulled to the side, do not rush to hook, give it 1-2 seconds to swallow the bait. Then the fishing rod should be moved slightly forward and hooked.

Catching crucian carp with a spinning rod will be exciting and productive if you equip it correctly. An important factor in successful fishing will be a good choice of time and place for it.

Wiring

As for wiring, I use a variety of options and experiment often and a lot. This includes pulling along the bottom, fortunately there are no snags in the sand. Most often I use a step, but always a short one - a maximum of one revolution of the coil. As for the time of pauses, I try different options, from a second to a longer one of 5-7 seconds, during which I can play along a little with a snag on the spot. With any wiring option, I avoid excessive sharpness; everything is moderately passive, smooth, without fuss. I always try to remember that crucian carp is not a pike or a pike perch, it does not like harshness.

Lures for spinning carp fishing

If you are fishing with nanojig, then first of all try small silicone baits and vibrating tails. Even the so-called edible flavored rubber is best:

  • shrimps;
  • squid;
  • garlic;
  • fish;
  • anise;
  • fruit;
  • strawberries, etc.

To catch crucian carp using a spinning rod, edible rubber is used as bait.

It has been proven that crucian carp take more actively on edible rubber than on simple twisters. Can be applied to silicone baits and attractants to attract fish with a stronger scent. Just remember that crucian carp have a small mouth and all baits should be of the smallest size.

Catching crucian carp with a spinning rod is also possible using jigs. Their weight should be from 0.5 to 2 grams. As you already understand, such large and heavy jigs will replace jig heads. You can also attach artificial bloodworms and maggots to them. Various twisters in the shape of worms, invertebrates or insects are perfect.

Remember that the jig head for catching crucian carp must be dark in color.

This will make it invisible, and the bait on it, on the contrary, will be more natural and attractive. Bright silver colored jig heads will spook fish, so avoid using them.

When using a spinning rod for crucian carp, jig heads are used instead of lures

Most fishermen who practice fishing for crucian carp using spinning rods recommend that you carefully select twisters or vibrotails. For example, a bait with one small tail, dim coloring and a ribbed body is preferable. At the same time, the same twister can be placed crosswise on the hook, which will give it additional attractiveness in the water.

Crucian carp bites on spinning rods

Crucian carp bites have a different character, but basically it is a small blow - somewhat similar to a pike perch’s grip, only much softer. This sly guy can also stealthily pinch and touch with soft touches, making it difficult to successfully hook him. But if you decide to grab the bait, then it is enough that there is little point in hooking, and the implementation is almost one hundred percent.

In conclusion, I would like to wish my fellow spinning anglers not to lose heart if a predatory fish is moping and refuses to bite. Feel free to switch to catching large crucian carp with a spinning rod - you will be surprised by the catches!

Where and when to catch crucian carp on a spinning rod

In order to catch crucian carp well with spinning tackle, you need to pay special attention to the reservoir. A small lake with a large concentration of peaceful fish is best. The best option is a pond where there are many snouts and palms weighing from 100 to 200 grams. Where there are few crucian carp, it is definitely not worth catching them with a spinning rod. Fishing in reservoirs with predatory fish is also unpromising. Mostly perch and pike will bite, scaring the crucian carp away from the bait.

Be sure to take weather conditions into account. It is best to catch crucian carp using a spinning rod in warm weather, but not in the heat. At high temperatures it is not active; when it gets cold, it goes into holes and depths, where it is difficult to attract it even with the most interesting bait and game.

Fishing for crucian carp with a spinning rod will be successful only in warm weather

Promising places for catching crucian carp with a spinning rod are the borders of water and vegetation. For example, areas overgrown with reeds. A good point would be a difference in depth, even if it is only half a meter. It is also worth paying attention to places of aquatic vegetation on the border with the dump in depth.

In early spring, you can successfully catch crucian carp using a spinning rod in shallow water, where the fish go to search for food after winter. In summer, it is better to find holes 1 to 2 m deep, as well as creeks protected from the wind. However, the ideal time for catching crucian carp with a spinning rod is considered to be the days after the ice melts. The fish have a real hunger, and the search for food is difficult due to the muddy water.

In addition, do not forget that catching crucian carp with a spinning rod requires constant movement. First you need to find a promising point. However, several casts can spook the fish. In this case, you must immediately move to the side in search of a new crucian carp site. Try to fish also distances close to the shore. Still, crucian carp rarely feeds at depth. Therefore, guiding along coastlines can also be effective. Especially if there are bushes or reeds growing nearby.

Fishing with a spinning rod will be effective if you fish close to the shore with a constant change of fishing location

How to catch crucian carp using a spinning rod

There are certain rules in catching crucian carp using a spinning rod. The bait must not be allowed to fall to the bottom at high speed. You want it to lower slowly, attracting passing fish in the process. Crucian carp can bite both directly from the bottom and during a pause. It's 50/50 here.

The scent of the bait is very important. That is why odorous substances are added to it. There are many options here, and each fisherman has his own, personal one. For example, sunflower oil, in which onions were fried, complements the taste of bread very well. In this case, the crumb is taken near the crust, where it itself is more flavorful. But white, wheat bread is mixed with sour cottage cheese.

You can and should feed crucian carp, but in reasonable quantities. The choice is very large. For example, many people use regular cake. They simply throw a handful into the water and wait for a hungry fish to come eat it. It can be replaced by oatmeal, brown bread crusts previously soaked in water, or steamed wheat grains. Do not overfeed the fish, otherwise it may not bite later, having eaten to its fullest.

In winter, catching crucian carp is a thankless task. The fish does not like the cold and burrows into the mud, leaving unlucky fishermen with their noses. So it sits out the time when even the deepest places freeze, right down to the bottom, and rises after the ice has melted and the water has warmed up a little. You can't hope until then. Crucian carp are not caught from the ice at all.
