What to pay attention to
Fishing in the reservoirs of the Kurgan region is often affected by unstable local climate and weather. In summer, due to temperature fluctuations, it is difficult to predict when the fish will bite. In winter it is frosty and there is a lot of snow. In the fall they go out to catch predatory fish.
Common types of fish are fished at free places and at paid bases, but fishing for sterlet, Siberian sturgeon, nelma, Siberian spined loach and Siberian char is prohibited. The catch is affected by the season, the depth of the lake or river, and the speed of the current. But local fishermen are not inclined to share the secrets of places and methods of fishing.
It is worth knowing that fishing is prohibited on the Techa and Tobol rivers, between the Arbinsky water intake and the Kurgan dam. Also on rivers that are shorter than 150 km and in areas 500 m before the mouth.
When going fishing, do not forget to check about the prohibitions in force in the reservoir and the region
Fishing on the lakes
Approximately 2,000 lakes out of the total number of reservoirs in the Kurgan region are freshwater, of which only 400 can boast of large sizes, the rest have a small area.
The largest is Lake Pike, where a significant number of predators live, thanks to which the reservoir got its name.
In any of the places you can successfully fish in both the cold and warm seasons. Only in spring there are restrictions, because spawning begins at this time, so there is practically no bite.
Each lake has its own characteristics and especially fishing spots that you need to know. The following are extremely popular:
- Alakol.
- Babiye.
- Big donks.
- Swan Lakes.
Alakol
Alakol is a large freshwater lake that has the following features:
- The area of the lake is 1,100 hectares;
- the nearest settlement to it is Kiley-Kazakkulovo;
- You can fish here all year round for free;
- getting to it is not difficult, you can drive your own car from Chelyabinsk towards Almenevo;
- maximum depth of the lake is 4.5 meters;
- the banks are flat, there are convenient approaches to water;
- you can fish from the shore or go fishing on a boat;
- Not long ago, a peled was released into the lake.
Mainly in Alakol you can catch the following types of fish:
- Perch.
- Silver crucian carp.
- Peled.
Since the shore is densely overgrown with reeds, and the bottom is muddy and there are practically no underwater snags, you don’t have to be afraid of snags. The fish bite here quite well; you can use both artificial and natural baits.
Indian
This lake is very popular, so there are always a lot of vacationers and people wanting to go fishing. It is quite difficult to find a free good place, so it is better to arrive in advance. You can only fish from the shore. It bites in any weather, you can fish even in winter.
On Babi Lake you can catch:
- carp;
- crucian carp;
- burbot;
- carp
Fishing here is free, despite the popularity of the lake. There are quite large fish; you can catch carp weighing several kilograms. The water is clear, you can see the bottom at a depth of 2 meters. Since there are a lot of thickets on the shore, snags are possible, so you should fish carefully. From the nearest settlement of the village of Petukhi it is 5 km, the road is very bad.
Big donks
This reservoir is quite large. It flows into the Tobol River and is very popular among fishermen. There are several small lakes near the Big Donks.
Mostly perch is caught here, but you can also catch:
- Crucian carp.
- Carp.
- Pike.
It is on this reservoir that it is possible to catch a really large perch weighing 200-400 g, so it is worth stocking up on strong fishing line so that it does not break during the resistance of the prey.
You can fish in both the cold and warm seasons, and winter fishing is not inferior in quantity to summer fishing. The lake is heavily overgrown with algae, the shores are mostly flat, there are a lot of reeds, but there are convenient descents to the water's edge. The bottom is muddy, there are practically no sharp changes in depth.
Swan Lakes
They are located near the village of Kropanka, occupy a small area, but their length is quite large. These lakes are shallow, their length is only a few kilometers. Here you can do some good fishing for both predatory and peaceful fish, you can catch:
- pike;
- crucian carp;
- perch;
- ide;
- pike perch.
The prey usually caught is small in size, but it bites regularly. You can catch fish in winter and summer. The bottom is muddy, there are practically no changes in depth.
Fishing in Kurgan and nearby
The Black River flows through the city, where you can find:
- bleaks and minnows, which are caught with a fly rod from the shore;
- perch, for this fish you need a float rod with a worm or a spinning rod with small rotating spoons;
- The roach is caught by wiring with a long Bolognese rod with a “tug”.
Nearby is Black Lake , where crucian carp and tench live with perches and roaches. The fishing spot here is where the river flows. Another river on the banks of which the region’s capital stands is Tobol. Cool places in the city are on the Oryol Reservoir, on Khokhlovatiki (lake) and on the popular Bezdonnoye Lake.
Lake Puktysh, Kurgan region
Lake Puktysh is an excellent place to get together with a large, friendly company and do some fishing, since the main feature of this reservoir is that it is rich in catch.
First of all, this is due to the abundance of fish living there, and secondly, the lake is surrounded on all sides by small swamps, thanks to which on hot summer days, to escape the heat, the fish moves closer to the shore, approaching the bolts overgrown with reeds. So, let's quickly find out more about this lake.
Pond fish
The lake boasts the following fish species:
- Crucian carp (several species live in the reservoir).
- White amur.
- rotan fish
- Carp.

I arrived in my native Kurgansk from Moscow and the very next day my friends decided to take me fishing. We chose our favorite place, Lake Puktysh. On the way there, I noticed that several things had changed, and most noticeably the road had changed; new asphalt had been laid there.
Friends explained this to me by saying that over the past few years Puktysh has become quite a popular place for fishing. After a few hours of driving, we found ourselves in place and prepared all the necessary gear, we immediately started fishing and, as always, I did not leave the lake empty-handed.
In half a day of fishing, I managed to catch a whole bucket of crucian carp, in addition to 2 former cupids.

We went to Lake Puktysh in the last days of the closing of the summer fishing season. My friends and I chose this place for a reason, since since time immemorial we know that this place has always been distinguished from other lakes by its good catch and its beautiful nature (especially in early summer).
Well, as for fishing, I would like to note that we went there at all entrances (fortunately, the shore there is sandy and you can place tents). During the 2 days that we spent there we were able to catch quite a few large crucians and carps.
How can I get to?
If you decide to happily spend your weekend in this particular place, then in order to get here you need to drive in the direction of Chelyabinsk along the M-5 highway, but there is no need to enter it, you need to go around it and move towards Mirny.
Having gone around the city, you will get to the P-254 highway , you will need to travel along it along the following route: Miasskoye, Shchuchye, Chumlyak, Puktysh and now, after a few minutes of driving through the area, you will find yourself in place.
Fish of Kurgan reservoirs
In the Orlovsky (Energetika district in Kurgan) and Mitinsky (Ketovsky district) reservoirs they catch:
- roach and bream;
- crucians and carp (carp);
- grass carp and pike perch;
- perch and pike.
In the Krasnoznamensky reservoir of the Zverinogolovsky district of the Kurgan region they also catch roach, perch, carp, but also chubs and ides.
Lake Alakul, Kurgan region
Lake Alakul is a medium-sized body of water, of which there are many in this area. But why is it singled out among other fishing spots? - you ask. Its main feature is that the lake is used for industrial fishing, which means that there is a considerable amount of fish in the lake.
To maintain natural resources, the lake is artificially populated with fry for their rearing. So to speak, in the natural environment. It is also worth noting that previously there was a fee for fishing in this place, but now it has been made available to the public.
Pond fish
The following fish species live in this reservoir:
- Carp.
- Crucian carp.
- Minnow.
In summer, fishing is carried out exclusively from boats, since the shore there is shallow and therefore there is no fish there. Well, as for winter, at this time the lake is empty of fishermen.

I’ve been going fishing to Lake Alakul for a long time (about 3 years now), since this is my favorite place, and during this time I’ve managed to catch more than one bucket of crucian carp and crucian carp. Besides the fact that there is simply amazing nature and a quiet atmosphere, there are also fish there, you can catch as much as you like! We can safely say that the crucian carp itself jumps into your boat.
As for the specific features of fishing, it should be noted that it is worth fishing near the reeds only in early spring (the first days of March), since there is a very large accumulation of fish there due to the fact that after a cold winter the fish come out to warm up.

Friends invited me to go fishing on Lake Alakul, since I am an avid carp fisherman, they persuaded me to go fishing with them (I was going to go fishing in another place). Well, they told me that, according to them, there is carp there, you can catch a year in advance. Without thinking twice, I agreed!
I would really like to note that they turned out to be right and fish are a dime a dozen there, and the nature surrounding this lake could be a separate topic of conversation. So, thanks to my friends, I found my favorite place for fishing.
How can I get to?
In order to get to the lake, you need to leave Kurganskaya on the M-51 and follow the following route: Vakhrushevo, Anfalovo, Kanashevo, Pivkino, Petrushino. In general, the road is not long, about 70 kilometers to cover, which will take you about an hour and a half.
Fishing places on Kurgan rivers
Spinning fishermen hunt for 500-700 gram crucian carp on Tobol and Iset. Also found here are perch and bream, tench and pike, silver carp and grass carp, carp and other fish that are caught with worms and maggots. In Tobol , pike perch and ide are used on a spinning lure; burbot are lured with a bottom, where fish slices are placed. Donka and feeder tackle are prepared for trophy bream.
Fishermen often praise the Iset River, where they come with spinning rods for chubs, ides and pikes. In addition, they catch roach, burbot, bream, pike perch and perch. The river is characterized by water eddies, depth differences and areas where water flows in the opposite direction. Such places are often cluttered, which attracts predatory fish.
In winter, some parts of the river do not freeze, which makes it possible to fish with a spinning rod. Perch lives in uninhabited places, as can be seen from the top swimmers. Burbot are lured at night by dragging the bait along the bottom. Among other rivers, they choose fishing on the Miass, Iryum and the Uy River. The same fish found here as in Tobol and Iset.
Winter fishing
Winter fishing in the Kurgan region
Winter fishing in the Kurgan region begins, as a rule, at the end of November or December, when the ice thickness reaches 6-8 cm. Particularly impatient fishermen, at their own peril and risk, rush to shallow bays and lakes that freeze first. Sometimes, just a week or two after the November holidays, such desperate fishermen can be seen on Shershn, Selezyan, Maly Kremenkul and some other places. The main prey here are perch and rotan.
Hunters for large perch, having equipped their fishing rods with spoons and balancers, will go to Lake Peschanoye in the Kurgan region, and those who prefer quantity over quality when fishing for “striped ones” need to go towards Treustan for perch 50-100 grams.
For crucian carp you can go to the Oktyabrsky district, namely in Novomoskovka. Here, at night, more than a kilogram of “bast shoes” came across egg whites. But if you don’t think too far, Lake Chistoe, which is no more than half a hundred miles away. But there are subtleties here. There are so many minnows in the lake that standard bloodworms are not suitable as bait. Only a worm who can't handle small things!
Many reservoirs of the Kurgan region. suitable for winter fishing, will provide an opportunity to get unforgettable emotions for both avid fishermen and novice fishermen. There are many places where you can go fishing successfully.
The closest places for bream are the Chebarkul region, Bolshoi Elanchik and Lake Chebarkul itself, where large bream bite on the first ice and only at night. You can’t catch anything from the winder here, at best, only “plywood”. For hunting bream, Lake Bolshoy Sunukul, near the village of Nepryakhino, is preferable. There are more fish here and there is less tramping around the lake. It is here that, if you are lucky with the weather, the bream is caught on “whiskers” of such a size that only the fishing lines crack.
Sudak - Hornets and the Nyazepetrovskoe reservoir, which is located 180 kilometers from Chelyabinsk. The reservoir is interesting, but it won’t freeze soon. The first ice, as they say, will be cool everywhere.
Fishing on Lake Kasargi is also rich in catches. There, in the first ten days of December, whitefish are excellently caught, because... this period is spawning time for her. Half a kilogram (or even more) fish, zealously protecting their future offspring, usually tirelessly attack the spoon. The main thing is to get to the right place at the right time. It happens that fishermen sitting ten meters apart from each other catch absolutely incomparable volumes at this time of year. But if, nevertheless, Fortune turns its face to such a devoted lover of winter fishing and the place happens to be chosen successfully, then he does not go home without fifty goals. And there’s nothing to say about the “fort excitement” that plays out in such cases. Especially if you remember how much any fish from the whitefish family costs in the store.
Lake Monastyrskoe is worthy of a separate discussion. There are some subtleties here. There are an unusually large number of minnows in the lake. Therefore, the usual bloodworm will not work as an attachment. Only a worm that will be too tough for small things.
Order Pike-like
A small order close to Salmonidae, which includes two families consisting of 12 species, 2 of which live in our country.
Pike family
The list of fish in the Kurgan region includes only one species from this family.
Pike
Found everywhere in most rivers of the region. It is found in reservoirs and many lakes - where conditions suit it. There are no pike except in closed reservoirs with an unfavorable oxygen regime.
