Night fishing, catching fish with a net

Fishing at night is a rather difficult method, which, however, has its fans. Night fishing is possible at any time of the year, but it is more popular in the summer. If you are a beginner, then it is better to try your hand at hunting fish at night in the summer, when you will quickly understand all the intricacies of this tricky business and subsequently be able to apply many of these skills during the day. In general, first of all, night fishing is a time for fishing tales, sitting around the fire and fishing in between drinking tea (or something stronger). But in order to not only have a good time fishing, but also come home with your catch, let’s look at some tricks that will help you and protect you from the dangers of the night.

Features of night fishing

Let's first figure out what advantages there are in this type of fishing:

  • You can take any place you like. The bulk of fishermen and vacationers have already left their campsites.
  • You don’t have to worry that the fish will see you and your manipulations on the shore through clear water.
  • Large fish are less cautious at night, so there is a possibility of catching trophy specimens and bites of small fish are reduced.
  • You are not bothered by midges, heat and other “pleasures” of daytime fishing. However, it should be noted that mosquitoes can, on the contrary, become active at night in many bodies of water, so it is better to stock up on repellents.
  • At night there is usually no wind or very little wind, which means it will not interfere with casting.

Types of fish suitable for night fishing

Not every fish can be caught in the dark. Of course, first of all you should focus on the ichthyofauna of a particular reservoir. But we can say that all these fish must lead an active nocturnal lifestyle. These fish include:

  • Various types of catfish.
  • Burbot.
  • Some representatives of cyprinids (bream, chub, ide, carp, carp).
  • You can catch pike perch from the perch family at night.
  • Crucian carp.

Of course, the list can be expanded, but these are the representatives of the underwater world that are most common throughout Russia.

What kind of fish are caught at night?

Which representatives of the aquatic world are active at night on rivers, lakes and other bodies of water? Among all fish species, anglers note the highest activity in perch. This predatory fish with attractive stripes loves to feed at night. Her unprecedented appetite dulls her vigilance, which invariably leads to getting hooked. Also, during the twilight period, bream, crucian carp, burbot, large pike, and record-breaking specimens of carp are readily caught on the fisherman’s bait. These abodes of a reservoir can be located both at depth and near the shore.

The true owner of shallow waters is considered to be pike perch. Fans of night fishing can seriously count on catching it, so they often organize targeted fishing with a selection of gear and bait. If during the daytime pike perch prefers to stay in the depths, then at night, when the water is warmed by the summer sun, it goes out into shallow water. An experienced fisherman distinguishes the approach of pike perch by its characteristic splashes. They resemble a perch approaching the shore, as if the fish were moving in waves, but there was no slurping sound. Almost all aquatic lovers of night feeding bite at sunset, then calm down for a while, and at midnight they again have a feast, which plays into the hands of lovers of night fishing.

Choosing the right tackle

The first thing you should pay attention to when getting ready for night fishing is the choice of gear that will become indispensable assistants and will provide you with half the success. In the dark, they are most often caught using a donkey or spinning rod. If you only use fly rods, then equip it with a special float for night fishing - with a phosphor coating that glows in the dark.

Your tackle should be:

  • Maximum sensitive.
  • Convenient.
  • More durable than during daytime fishing.

With the first two points, everything seems to be clear - you don’t see the tackle, so you will only rely on tactile sensations, so the rod should respond even to weak bites. You should choose gear that will be stronger than for daytime fishing for the same reason - there is a high probability of breakage when fishing and fishing, and you can easily get caught on snags or some kind of debris at the bottom of the reservoir.

Selection of gear and equipment for night fishing

When going night fishing, you need to choose the right gear and equipment. You can fish with float and match rods, equipped with luminous floats, but the most effective bite is observed when fishing with spinning and feeder rods. Since the lighting on reservoirs at this time of day is extremely low, it is very difficult to see the bite, so many fishermen act on the level of intuition.

The gear chosen by fishermen must meet certain criteria:

  • have increased sensitivity;
  • be as easy to use and reliable as possible;

Other useful helpers

When going night fishing on a river or lake, pay much more attention to your preparations than when fishing during the day. Not only your safety and fishing success, but also the safety of your partners depends on high-quality and correct equipment. The use of faulty equipment, defective accessories, or the absence of any required attributes is not allowed.

The most important, even mandatory item is a flashlight or some other light source. The most common assistants are headlamps, but it is also better to have a hand-held device for them. Be sure to check their serviceability and stock up on an extra set of batteries.

In addition to the flashlight, think about your clothes. It should not only be extremely comfortable, but also protect well from night dampness and coolness, which are inevitable on any body of water. Shoes should also be the most comfortable and fit tightly on the foot, which will eliminate dislocations and other troubles that are possible in the dark. It would be ideal if both clothing and shoes had reflective stripes, at least on the back side.

Rules of behavior on the pond at night

There are also several nuances that will primarily ensure your safety:

  • Do not fish from a boat unless it is equipped with a beacon or indicators.
  • Study the shore if you are in an unfamiliar place: it should not be steep or slippery.
  • When wading, it is better for the spinning angler not to go far into the water, especially if he is not familiar with the bottom topography - it will be enough to go knee-deep. Remember that when fishing in excitement, you can easily slip or trip, especially if the bottom is rocky.
  • Bottom fishers should securely fix their rods using a high-quality stand, from which the tackle will not slip when biting a large fish.
  • When placing bottom and fly rods, increase the distance between them to prevent tangling of the equipment.
  • Spinning fishermen should also stand up so as not to get caught by their neighbor’s bait.

Following these simple rules will help you protect yourself from various troubles and injuries during night fishing.

Night spinners

This is probably the most difficult way of fishing in the dark. And not only for the fisherman himself, but also for the fish. Most predators need to see the bait, but in the dark this is impossible; they only have to rely on vibrations in the water. Now we mean the night, i.e. the darkest time of the day, when it is so dark that you can prick your eyes out, and not late evening or early morning. The key to the success of night fishing will be a good knowledge of the reservoir where you are fishing. It is clear that beginners do not have such knowledge, so they should get their hands on it first by day fishing.

And in general, productive night fishing with a spinning rod is more an accident than a pattern. It is most rational to use this tackle during daylight hours, and at night to rest and gain strength for the next day.

Night fishing with spinning rod

Perhaps, catching fish at night with a spinning rod is the most difficult type of spinning fishing. After all, the fact is that if a fish finds a nozzle or bait on the bottom by smell or by a food trail, then in most cases the fish should see spinning baits, and only dynamic and sound vibrations in the water may not be enough for a predator to bite.

Of course, I was able to catch fish many times in the late evening and at dusk, but I had to fish in the dark at night several times and not always successfully. If, of course, early-early morning, when the sun has not yet risen, is considered night, then during this period of time there were plenty of wonderful fishing trips, but directly at that time of the night, when it was dark, it was possible to catch at least something only a few times...

One day, in the light of a fire (the fish soup was already being cooked on it), I cast along the underwater spit. To the left and right of the spit the depth was up to 2 meters, and on the spit itself the depth was about a meter. The length of this underwater lake elevation was 100-150 meters (tested during winter fishing). So, without leaving the place of dinner, I managed to catch several perches and a small pike in a row using a front-loaded spinner (almost a jig). Moreover, it happened so unexpectedly, and the bites followed so lightning fast that I managed to catch all this fish in 5-10 minutes.

Literally on the second cast - the first bite! Then another one and another one. The last one I pulled out was a pike weighing 400-500 grams. At first it seemed to me that I had discovered some kind of fish secret or found a place where fish feed at night. But after using the nut, another half hour of casting did not bring a single bite. In other years, I tried two more times at approximately the same time of year and also at night to fish in the same place, but, alas, it was a complete zero. Apparently I was just lucky.

I know that at night they catch catfish quite successfully, but this fish is not found in Siberia. Pike-perch, which is also quite good at catching at night, has not yet spread everywhere in Siberia and little knowledge of night-time pike-perch fishing has been accumulated, except that pike-perch can and should be caught before complete darkness and especially at dusk. As for pike, fishermen I know once told me how they caught pike at night. According to them, the pike only lies in ambush at night, and it was not possible to catch more than one fish from one place. Therefore, they moved from place to place and thus periodically caught pikes.

But they knew the lake well and even thoroughly and could literally fish with their eyes closed. Without this knowledge of the reservoir, it is unlikely that another angler would have made a catch. Making accurate casts at night into predator ambush areas is extremely difficult, and moving along a pond or along the shore in the dark is also not a pleasant experience. In a word, the following conclusion can be drawn: so far, all the accumulated fishing experience suggests that, in principle, it is possible to catch fish at night using a spinning rod.

Although the fish bite at night, the catches are small, and there are plenty of difficulties in such fishing. So it would be more rational to fish during the daylight hours, and in the dark to rest and save up strength for fishing. Of course, any rule has exceptions, and if there are any, I will be happy to share them.

Night floaters

The most common gear for night fishing in summer is a classic fly rod or half-bottom. Fishing at night is practically no different from daytime. The only thing that some adherents of this type of hunting recommend is the use of floats for night fishing. But on the other hand, opinions on this issue are divided. It seems convenient when in the dark you use a luminous fishing line and a luminous float - for night fishing these are indispensable assistants, because you cannot see your gear. But again, many believe that the fish sees it too, and therefore does not want to bite. The most avid fishermen prefer to focus on tactile sensations and cast their rods so that the float is illuminated by the faint light of the moon. There is no single correct answer to this question; it is probably better to try each method yourself and choose the one that suits you.

Of course, sitting in the dark with a fishing rod, when you don’t see the float, but are just frantically waiting for a bite, is a very stressful activity, but at the same time there is some kind of magic in it, which you need to feel at least once in your life.

Night fishing gear

Theoretically, you can fish at night using any daytime gear, but in practice, with some of them this task becomes much more complicated. To make it easier to solve, various tricks and technical devices are used, mainly aimed at ensuring proper bite signaling. Perhaps they are worth considering first.

"Fireflies"

This is the name given to the elements of equipment that emit light. They are attached to floats, rod tips and bells - both temporarily and permanently, and can be chemical, electronic or phosphorescent.

Chemical fireflies

The first category is small plastic capsules produced by the fishing industry, containing a solution of oxalic acid ester and an ampoule of hydrogen peroxide. When light is needed, the capsule bends, the ampoule cracks, the substances mix and react, as a result of which hordes of photons are emitted. Scientists call this phenomenon “chemiluminescence.”

This thing shines for about 12-15 hours, which is enough for the whole summer night. Its weight is small, so it does not affect the sensitivity of the float much.

Electronic fireflies

Our electronic fireflies are mostly homemade, although overseas industry produces them in quite large quantities. They consist of a low-power LED and a pair of small batteries. The easiest way to make one is from a lighter with a flashlight. It is also quite possible to make a float with this filling, for example, from a cocktail tube or cotton candy.

Such devices shine until the batteries run out. But they are definitely enough for one night - tested in practice. Unfortunately, due to the mass of the batteries, the sensitivity of the float suffers greatly, and the process of loading it becomes more complicated.

"Fireflies" from a phosphorescent nipple

Such “fireflies” are made from scraps of a “light-accumulating” nipple, which is periodically available in fishing shops. It is enough to put them on the float antenna. they shine quite well.

This firefly is very good, but nevertheless it has one drawback. The nipple must be periodically recharged with a light source, for example a flashlight. The brighter this source, the better. The time between recharges depends on the quality of the nipple. We came across some that glowed clearly for almost an hour, and some that needed to be recharged every 15-20 minutes. However, of all the fireflies for night fishing, the nipple ones are the lightest. Accordingly, floats equipped with them have maximum sensitivity.

Donka

This gear is most suitable for night fishing - even in a completely daytime version. Its obligatory attribute - a bell - will provide the fisherman with the necessary bite alarm. Some enthusiasts complement it with a firefly, which in my opinion is unnecessary, although depending on who you are. For me, it’s better to put a dozen of the simplest tricks.

If fishing is carried out exclusively on donkeys, the fisherman can easily relax, having tea by the fire, or while away the time in a tent listening to the radio. A suddenly ringing bell will notify him of a bite, and by the time the fisherman approaches the tackle, the fish will have time to detect it.

Float rod

Night fishing with a “float” is impossible without a float equipped with a firefly. Practice has shown that homemade options are best suited here, because store-bought ones do not have sufficient sensitivity.

You won’t be able to relax when float fishing at night, as you constantly have to monitor the float. And if during the day you don’t need to strain your eyesight to do this, then at night it’s the opposite. The fact that by the morning the fisherman’s eyes will be “in a bunch” is a fact, this should be immediately taken into account when planning to go float fishing at night.

But on the other hand, unlike the donkey, only the “float” allows you to fish for particularly finicky fish.

Ship

One of those night gear that does not need a bite alarm (and is purely river-based, among other things). All bites on the boat are registered tactilely - by a sudden “jerk from the hands” or by strange changes in the tension of the line. You can also detect a bite by the sound of a splash in the area of the leashes (an experienced fisherman can distinguish this sound by ear from the usual fish “splash”). In general, it would be a good idea to periodically drive the boat to the fishing point and check the leads with a second (long-range) flashlight.

In Soviet times, the industry produced large inertial reels equipped with a ratchet, which was of no use as a clutch, but which could be successfully used as a bite alarm for a boat. Fortunately, the usual size of the tackle’s float planes (approximately 40 by 20 cm) created a tension that was just barely enough to overpower the tongue. And the rattle held the boat quite well while it was simply loitering in the current. But, as soon as the fish bit, the ratchet was triggered by the jerk, and with a squeal (whoever heard it knows) it released the fishing line.

Spinning

The most difficult tackle in night fishing. And no tricks can make its use easier, except perhaps a night vision device. However, if a fisherman has straight hands, he will quickly become adept at throwing bait “blindly” and achieve quite acceptable results in night spinning.

By the way, about baits. The best of them for night conditions (at least at first) are considered to be surface ones - wobblers, poppers, etc. However, if the bottom in the fishing area is sandy or clayey - without snags and accumulations of stones, then it is quite possible to “tap” it and jig heads2, as well as use spinners without hooks.

Night beavers and feeders

This kind of fishing can perhaps be called a classic of the genre. When fishing at night on a feeder, gear must be selected based on the strength of the current and the weight of the sinker. You can navigate both by the tip of the rod and by the glowing indicators or bells - there are many options here, you can only choose the right one through personal experience. It is better to fasten fireflies using special holders, rather than with improvised materials - this way you will protect yourself from a large number of overlaps, which can significantly complicate fishing.

When fishing at night, make sure that the gear is well secured. Even if a trophy bites, it is impossible for it to drag the rod into the water, because in a fishing impulse you will run after it, and this can be fraught with various dangers.

It should also be said that when fishing with this gear in the dark, it is not necessary to throw bait in deep holes; at night, the fish can bite well in the shallows, going out there to feed. The only way to determine where fish eat is experimentally, by casting gear throughout the pond.

Night fishing on the river in summer

The summer night is short, but I didn’t take any sleep. I really wanted to see with my own eyes how night fishing on the river in the summer ended for one fisherman, whom he left alone for the night. It was still dark on the river bank, where one fisherman was already busily “driving” a float along the river, which was beginning to turn pink.

He responded to my greeting with a nod of his head, showing with all his appearance that I was interfering and we wouldn’t be able to have a conversation. Well, well aware of my not entirely tactful behavior, I quietly sat down on the shore and began to patiently wait for the end of this night show.

In summer the river wakes up beautifully! The sky is just beginning to turn pink in the east, and the water is literally boiling with splashes of fish. In the predawn darkness, bream, ide, catfish, pike perch, pike and other small creatures perform their eternal dance, with which they welcome the beginning of a new day. This bewitching spectacle lasts no more than an hour, but no words can describe how many emotions it evokes in a person’s soul, it just needs to be seen.

Being carried away by the contemplation of the awakening river, I missed the main thing, for which, in fact, I came. Meanwhile, the fisherman was fishing for another trophy. The fact that this was not a trifle was eloquently indicated by the rod bent towards the water itself. Even in the twilight one could see how carefully and competently the fish were being fished.

The extravaganza of contemplating the awakening river somehow faded into the background. Like a fan at the stadium, with bated breath, he tried not to miss a single moment of the fight. In the twilight it was hard to see who was on the hook there, and fishing etiquette prevented me from getting closer - I know well how sometimes the advice of others interferes in a similar situation. But then the landing net came into play, and after a few moments something splashed in it.

Holding a high fishing rod in one hand and a landing net with a trophy in the other, the fisherman went ashore. Now it was possible to come closer and see who was actually fighting for their lives for so long. There was a good bream splashing around in the landing net - off the top of my head, it weighed at least two kilograms!

After noisily fishing for a large fish, the bites stopped for a while. Meanwhile, it was getting lighter, and soon the first morning fishermen would appear on the river bank. Apparently, not wanting to “declassify” himself, the fisherman quickly collected his gear, reached into the water behind the cage and brought ashore not just a lot, but a lot of choice fish - in these days it’s even indecent to name the weight of the catch...

Naturally, I wanted to learn as much as possible about this new method of fishing for me, and I volunteered to give the night fisherman a ride home. On the way, it turned out that Alexander, that was my passenger’s name, had been practicing this type of fishing for several years. He turns to night fishing only at the time when it is the hottest time, he fishes with maggots, and feeds him with broken shells, which he gets the day before fishing.

This information was quite enough for me to find myself on the river bank the next night with a fishing rod in my hands. Night fishing fascinated me, gradually I gained some experience - I looked at this method of fishing with my own eyes.

A little about the features of the gear. There is no need to invent something new for night fishing. A regular wire fishing rod is fine. I throw out all the food at once. Starter feeding and that's it - no additional feeding during the fishing process! From personal bitter experience, I was convinced that additional feeding spoiled the whole thing - either the fish were scared away by the noise, or the additional supply of food itself sharply reduced the number of bites until they stopped completely. And in order for the complementary food at the bottom to “work” as long as possible (ideally until dawn), I add more binders - clay, dense earth, etc.

I became convinced that it is very useful to introduce broken shells into the bait mixture as an animal component, because the main reason for fish biting at night in the heat is precisely the presence of a large number of dead shells near the shore, which have suffocated from the lack of oxygen in warm water and are now easy prey for fish. Based on this, the fishing location is selected.

First of all, shell rocks are promising, which are always abundant at the mouths of tributaries, oxbow lakes, and backwaters. It is useful to measure the bottom before fishing in the evening and choose a place where the bait will go out onto the underwater riffle at the end of the retrieve. Logically, the fish should bite best on a broken shell, but this bait is too delicate and reloading it at night after each retrieve is very troublesome.

Therefore, I consider maggots to be the best bait for night fishing. I put three or four larvae on the hook at once. For night fishing, the volume of the bait is of great importance, because in the dark it is much easier for fish to detect a large bait.

Now about the biting time at night. Sometimes the fish fatten evenly all night; in most cases, I observed two peaks of fish activity: from darkness to one in the morning, and predawn - from half past three to dawn. Moreover, at the beginning of the night the main fish in the catches are white-eye and silver bream. But closer to dawn, large bream very often come up to feed, so no matter how much you want to sleep before dawn, you have to hold on.

And yet, night fishing can become very rewarding and, despite all the excitement, you must somehow find the strength to stop in time so as not to turn into a banal poacher due to a significant excess of the catch limit. Of course, you can remain “zero”, primarily due to the wrong fishing location, but in any case, a night float is a most enjoyable activity, and not harvesting fish.

Lure

We should also talk about complementary feeding. It is difficult to give recommendations on the use of specific species, since this will depend on specific bodies of water and their inhabitants. But the general thing is that the first feeding should begin shortly before midnight, when most of the small fish are no longer so active, and nocturnal predators go hunting. Watch for bites, as soon as you see that a fish has approached the bite area, cast the feeders more often. This should be done about every 10 minutes to keep her in the pecking spot.

Night fishing for crucian carp

This kind of fishing is exciting because in the dark you can catch large specimens, even trophies. Most often at night, crucian fishermen use donks. When using a feeder, it is advisable to first study the reservoir well. If this is a section of a river, then you need to know the speed and strength of the current, the width of this section, so as not to make a mistake in choosing gear and casting distance.

When using a feeder, you should choose medium or heavy feeders and cast the equipment under the far bank - to the very edge of the vegetation. Such casts should be made until it gets completely dark: when fishing at night in the summer, crucian carp, especially large ones, are very cautious and are unlikely to come close enough to you. When complete darkness comes, you can move on to casting under the near shore. Ideal areas would be places with a weak current and a slightly silted bottom with snags and prominent relief. On a short cast, it is more advisable to use a light feeder - you no longer have to be afraid that it will be carried away by a strong current.

For som

The mustachioed predator is regularly caught on a spinning rod at night, but good fish have no problem crushing the universal pike-perch tackle, especially if there are thick snags nearby. Therefore, some spinning anglers chose catfish as a separate object of night hunting. In terms of time, catfish are caught throughout the night - from sunset to dawn, including during the darkest hours of the night (from 12 to 2 o'clock), so you have to catch them practically without smoking breaks. It is only important that the weather is at least somewhat stable, and that the night is not cold - the peaks of the night bite fall exactly during periods of warm weather, covering both August and early September.

Read: Polish spinners

The catfish are distinguished by large rippers and twisters, as well as spinners of 4-5 numbers; the latter perform better than rubber on the riffles, where catfish are common at night. It is interesting that on the rifts the mustachioed fish often groups into schools - it happens that within ten minutes the bites come one after another from different spinning rods fishing next to each other.

Lure for crucian carp

If, in addition to the feeder, you manually scatter complementary food, then the mixture should be fragrant and loose enough so that the turbidity settles slowly, but at the same time does not saturate the crucian carp entirely. It is good to add a small amount of chopped maggots to the prepared feed mixture. Just make sure that this amount is clearly not enough for the fish, then he will greedily grab the bait. In fairly fast currents, complementary foods should be thicker and contain more oatmeal. You can also use a closed feeder with a fine mesh.

Crucian carp is a rather cautious fish, so make sure that your silhouette does not fall on the water. You will have to give up bright clothes, and also, what is most inconvenient, from using a flashlight even when baiting hooks - all this will alert the fish and, if it does not frighten it off at all, will significantly reduce the number of bites. When fishing, you will only have to focus on the flexible tip of the rod, which will serve as a bite indicator, so painting the tip of the rod with luminescent paint will make fishing much easier.

When fishing for crucian carp at night in still water (lakes, oxbow lakes, backwaters), casts should be made to the edge of clear water, as well as to snags or depth changes. The bait used is almost the same as when fishing on the river, but looser so that the cloudy suspension settles to the bottom longer and stimulates the fish’s appetite. The use of oatmeal or bran is no longer practical.

Equipment structure

The above arguments are reflected in the equipment I use. In addition to specialized rods for catching night fish, I take with me on trips universal rods equipped in such a way that I can successfully catch absolutely any fish, regardless of type and size, and at any distance.

As a rule, these are match or Bolognese type rods 4-5 m long. The line is no thicker than 0.15-0.18 mm, depending on the characteristics of the fishing point and the dominant fish in the reservoir. If you have to fish near egg capsules or other grass and there is a high probability of catching a good tench or crucian carp before sunset or at dawn, it is more rational to use a fishing line with a diameter of 0.18 mm; in clean water you can use a thinner one.

I select leashes in the same way. I usually choose hooks No. 12-14 from thin but elastic wire. Even a small rudd will fit in its mouth, and it will hold a heavy bream. The load is a few pellets on the main line. This option will work for catching any fish, including small ones.

Particular attention should be paid to choosing the color of the float antenna for fishing at dusk. I became convinced that the classic red antenna is of little use. The degree of illumination of a reservoir at dusk is different, and therefore this color is perceived worse against the background of water.

On the glare surface of the lake when the sun sets or rises, it is preferable to install a black antenna. If you don't have one, you can use a black marker. But I like another option.

Considering the prospect of night fishing, I use profile floats with removable antennas. Their bodies have nests into which a scarlet antenna is inserted, and for the night time a fluorescent capsule is placed in the same nest.

From a piece of plastic tube, melted on both sides, in a couple of minutes I make a black antenna, which I use to complement the float kit. An ideal tube option adapted to a capsule with a diameter of 4 mm is a stick from a large Chupa Chups candy.

However, it is worth taking into account that dark antenna colors are suitable for backlighting (against the light). If the sun is behind or to the side, a light-colored antenna—white or bright yellow—is more visible against the background of dark water.

As for the mentioned capsules, the so-called “fireflies”, they should be used from the moment of complete darkness. In the absence of glare on the water, they clearly record all bites.

But you can’t do without the light of a headlamp at dusk. It is with its help that the bait is placed on the hook and the caught fish is removed from the hook. After performing this procedure, the light should be turned off so as not to scare away the fish with a beam of bright light directed at the water.

Night fishing for bream

When catching bream in the dark, feeder gear is most often used. The key to successful fishing will be studying the reservoir in the daytime, remembering landmarks for casting, current speed and other factors. Most often, large specimens will be caught in almost the same place where smaller fish were taken during the day, so it would be useful to fish the reservoir during the day. Casts should be made to the boundaries of deep holes, to places with a sandy bottom and weak current, and to coastal reaches.

It should be taken into account that in the summer, especially in hot weather, it is not always possible to catch the night feeding of large bream, since, firstly, it has already eaten enough after spawning, and secondly, it prefers cold water, and at shallow depths The water warms up during the day and does not attract fish as much.

It is better to choose gear for night fishing for bream with a length of at least 3.5 m (meaning feeder gear) to ensure long casting if you fish on the boundaries of deep holes. Plus, with such gear you can lift the feeder much faster and avoid more snags. It is better to use a monofilament fishing line, or a fluorescent one - the braided line will be very difficult to see in the water. The feeder is selected depending on the current - in stronger currents, choose heavier feeders. After the fishing line, you need to put on a cambric, then tie a swivel with a carabiner and attach one or two leashes up to 25 cm long.

Night fishing tactics

Night fishing involves not only fishing for different types of fish, but also using a variety of methods to catch them. Without a doubt, we can say that fishing at night, despite its romance, requires endurance, patience and work. The classic version of night fishing is donk fishing. As the sun sets, the fish chooses a feeding site. Either it is a deep hole, or there is an exit from the hole to a shallower area. At night, the donk must be cast closer to the shallows, and with the onset of morning, make a long cast into the hole.

It is often possible to catch fish with a half-bottom. In addition, there is no need to always be near the gear; the swinging of the rod indicates the presence of fish on the hook. In deep water, they catch burbot, bream, and ruffe on a half-bottom.

By and large, many people associate night fishing with spinning and feeder fishing. Perhaps this is one of the most common and difficult ways to catch fish. When casting a spinning rod or feeder, it is important to create dynamic sound vibrations and hit one point. Then the fish will see the bait and smell the bait. As a tackle for night fishing, a float rod has a right to exist; all that remains is to include a luminous float in the arsenal.

Fishing at night on rivers

When fishing at night on the river, technique is important. When fishing with any gear, it is important to monitor the condition of the fishing line. Experienced fishermen do not recommend using braided fishing line for night fishing. Everything is explained by the high probability of entanglement. It is extremely difficult to untangle such a fishing line in the dark, even if the fisherman is armed with a flashlight. Precautionary measures must also be observed with monofilament.

Often night fishing on the river is carried out from a boat. Then it becomes possible to cast across the river. When casting like this, it is better to close the reel bail and do not touch it until the line is pulled. Otherwise, a loop may appear on the spool, which will have an extremely negative impact on subsequent casts. When fishing on a river from the shore with feeder gear, the strength of the current is taken into account. Based on this factor, a feeder with the appropriate test is selected.

Fishing at night on lakes

There are plenty of places for night fishing on the lakes. Conventionally, they can be divided into deep-water areas, adjacent zones and areas near the coast with a gentle slope. If the bottom of the lakes is not clayey, then it is covered with vegetation, which attracts roach, crucian carp, and tench. Bream rushes to coastal zones during the spawning period. You can catch tench and bream using the same tackle, bait and lure.

A promising place for night fishing on the lake is the edge of the pits. It is important to feed the tackle casting point in such places. The emergence of fish from the pit for complementary feeding can provide a stable bite for two or three hours. Then there is a lull.

A good place for lake fishing at night is the area near the dam. The peak of the bite comes as dusk deepens. The pike perch loves such places the most; when it goes out to feed, it squeezes out the young, which makes the fisherman incredibly happy.

Fishing on reservoirs at night

In some cases, the experience of past years helps to choose the right place for night fishing on a reservoir. However, beginners must find their place for successful fishing. A more promising place for night fishing is flooded riverbeds. For example, if the depth of the reservoir reaches about 10 meters, then it makes sense to choose a place with a depth of half that. In some reservoirs, fish stay at a depth of three meters. Such depth attracts only the abundance of food. Otherwise, the fish looks for deeper places.

A good place for fishing is an area with hard ground. It is in such zones in reservoirs that mollusks develop, which arouses the interest of fish. In addition, on a hard bottom at night, fish take bait more easily. If during the day you can bait several places, then at night the tactic of baiting one place works; fishing should be done in complete silence.

Note to the fisherman! Experienced fishermen offer a fairly simple way to check the hardness of the bottom. You need to take an empty feeder, carefully lower it to the bottom and hold it there for no more than 15 seconds. After this, gently lift the feeder. If the soil is sufficiently hard, the feeder will come off easily; if the bottom is soft, you will feel stuck. Such manipulations can be carried out with a large jig.

Lure for bream

You can use universal complementary food for bream, mixing it with well-cooked millet porridge. You can also add vanilla or crushed seeds for flavor. If you use corn as the main bait, then a small amount of it can be added to the feed mixture.

In addition to corn, bream can be caught using a “sandwich” (maggot with a bunch of worms), a bunch of bloodworms or a worm, or semolina.

When fishing for a large bream, keep an eye on it: as soon as it floats up and takes a breath of air, it will lose its activity for a while and can be carefully brought to the shore or into a pre-prepared landing net.

The largest specimens bite in the darkest hours of the day, so you should be patient. But even if the day, or rather the night, is not going well, you should always remember that in fishing the catch is not the most important thing. What is more important is that at night in silence you rest from the hustle and bustle of the day. Don't set yourself the goal of catching a fish, and you won't experience much disappointment even if your fishing fails.

Benefits of night fishing

The obvious advantage is that it is much cooler at night than during the day during the summer months. On busy lakes or rivers there are fewer boats on the water and rarely any jet skis passing by.

At night the wind usually blows much less, so the water is much calmer. But this can be both an advantage and a disadvantage, since strong winds help enrich the water with oxygen. There are several theories about night fishing and some of these myths are listed below, but they are quite wordy.
