NDND boats

When choosing equipment for a hobby, you want to find an option that you can use for many years. This is especially true for expensive purchases. Gradually, PVC boats with a low-pressure inflatable bottom (LPID) are becoming more popular among connoisseurs of recreation on water bodies. They are presented quite diversely and differ in size, weight, and speed. There are also PVC boats with a high-pressure inflatable bottom. Both options are a very clever invention, but there are also disadvantages. Their bottoms are formed differently.

Boats with a low-pressure inflatable bottom have a number of advantages:

  • Softening the blows. Walking on a boat involves overcoming waves, as a result of which shocks and rocking are felt. It is the bottom that takes the main blow. When hitting blunt obstacles or a threshold, the boat will not break, since the bottom is completely elastic.
  • Assembly. Although pumping up the bottom takes time, this process is simpler than assembling a floorboard or installing a hard inlaid bottom. The main thing is to use a suitable pump. As a rule, a regular two-chamber foot-operated one is suitable.
  • Abrasion resistance. PVC boats with a low-pressure inflatable bottom are less susceptible to abrasion than those with solid flooring.
  • Thermal insulation. And this quality is felt not only in cool water. A boat with NDND will also be useful on land; it can serve as a mattress for sleeping.
  • Increased stability and load capacity. Although insignificant, it is still a useful circumstance. This is ensured by additional air compartments and a volumetric bottom.
  • Improved deadrise. This happens because the bottom drops below the cylinders. The NDND boat sails confidently in shallow waters with little waves.
  • Increased maneuverability. This circumstance is relevant, for example, for rescue operations.
  • Planing. Entering this mode is possible with an impressive load and a medium-power motor. Shallow-water and flat-bottomed versions of NDND boats are characterized by good stability and quick entry to planing.
  • Maintainability. Most damage can be repaired on the go.

And one more noticeable plus - if there is a hole in the main hull of the boat, the bottom will become a spare emergency compartment, allowing you to sail painlessly to the shore. Owners cannot help but be attracted by the ease of maintenance of the NDND boat. To wash it, just pour a certain amount of water into the cockpit. If serious dirt has formed on the surface, you can take a cloth and remove it.

Boats with a length of 300 - 350 cm, designed to install an outboard motor from 5 to 9.8 hp. Due to the low weight and correct deadrise of the NDND boats, they sail perfectly in planing mode. Almost all models have an interceptor installed; this device is not fundamentally new; its action in physical sense is close to the operation of transom plates. The interceptor allows the boat to go on planing faster, eliminates the dolphin effect, eliminates splashes (roosters), it is possible to increase the speed by 15-20% and, accordingly, save fuel. The presence of a PVC interceptor on the boat improves the performance of the NDND boat.

Even a visual comparison of high and low pressure inflatable boat bottoms makes it clear that these products are very different. We can say that the bottom for the AirDeck boat receives all the advantages of NDND, approaching the hardness of hard flooring.

Both of their varieties - NDND and NDVD - are warmer than rigid flooring, much lighter in weight, easier to install, require a less powerful motor due to their lightness, and therefore are gradually “squeezing out” the slate from the market.

Even a visual comparison of high and low pressure inflatable boat bottoms makes it clear that these products are very different. We can say that the bottom for the AirDeck boat receives all the advantages of NDND, approaching the hardness of hard flooring. It is much easier to fish while standing on a low-pressure watercraft and to move around the craft. At the same time, the cost of such a product is slightly higher than the NDNI. In general, the high-pressure inflatable bottom is considered more comfortable by users than the LPND.

Boat comparison: NDND or rigid floorboard

The inflatable bottom can be:

• removable – inflated and placed on the bottom of the boat, like a mattress; • integrated – stationary, stiffeners are formed by longitudinal seams. The more there are, the more stable the boat. There are pros and cons to a low pressure inflatable bottom. On the positive side: • a boat with NDND is lighter and easier to transport; • preparation for rafting takes 10 minutes - a simple pump is enough to fully inflate the craft during this time; • softens shocks; • boats with such a bottom are characterized by good maneuverability and quickly pick up speed; • motor-rowing boats with NDND mostly have a stationary transom, and it adds rigidity to the craft; • since the bottom is divided into sections, even if several of them are punctured, the boat will not sink.

From the bad:

• PVC material is still susceptible to mechanical damage. If you run into reinforcement or snags, the inflatable bottom will not save you; • It is unsafe to stand in such a boat - it will capsize, since there is no stability and proper distribution of gravity; • The space in the boat is reduced - the inflated bottom is larger in volume than the hard floor.

Which NDND to choose - selection criteria

When purchasing a small boat with a low-pressure bottom, you need to evaluate several characteristics.

  • Material strength

Modern manufacturers of inflatable watercraft use PVC with a high degree of strength. But if you want to buy a boat for 1 person, then it is better if PVC is the most durable. This will give you extra safety when going out on the water alone. It is worth considering an option that is made of reinforced PVC fabric with increased strength. Reinforced PVC is multi-layered, which contributes to better resistance to mechanical stress.

  • Dimensions

If we talk about sizes in general, then for 1 person you can choose a vessel 2.7-3.2 meters long. For two or three people it is better to buy a boat 3.3-4.2 meters long. But here everything is purely individual. It all depends on the needs of the buyer and the characteristics of future operation. In this case, it is necessary to take into account not only the overall dimensions of the craft, but also the dimensions of its cylinders. The latter affect the weight of the boat, as well as the ease of use.

  • Color

Are you interested in a PVC NDND boat, but you don’t know which color to choose yet? Models on sale today are available in different colors. There are watercraft in discreet colors: green, gray. But you can buy the ship in a different color. A lot of models are presented in a combined design: dark red with gray, blue with white, orange with gray, etc. Which option should I choose? It all depends on your wishes. But it is worth noting that, for example, for fishing it is better to choose a boat in a light color. Light PVC is better able to withstand prolonged exposure to sunlight. It will heat up less. And, for example, for hunting it is better to choose a boat of discreet colors or choose a camouflage option. In coastal thickets it will be almost invisible.

  • Load capacity

Pay attention to the load capacity. When assessing this characteristic, we advise you to take into account the specific features of the future operation of the vessel. How will you use the watercraft? For amateur or professional fishing, hunting? Or just for travel? How much cargo will you carry with you? The answers to these questions will help you choose the model that suits your requirements.
