Myths about PVC

The most common myths about PVC boats.

1. “Five-layer PVC”

The most common myth associated with inflatable boats.

Everyone who chooses an inflatable boat faces this myth. Everyone is subject to its influence - from buyers to sellers. Moreover, both of them are absolutely adequate people, but, as they say, “they don’t know what they are doing.” To dispel this myth, it is necessary to talk a little about the PVC material itself, from which PVC inflatable boats are made.

So, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) itself is a very thin layer of material, which in its strength is slightly higher than ordinary plastic bags from the store. In order to increase its strength, so-called reinforcement is performed - a layer of PVC is glued to a fairly rigid mesh of intertwined polymer threads on both sides. Gluing occurs with the help of a highly adhesive binder (adhesion is the property of particles of one material to penetrate another) which provides a bond between PVC and rigid cord at the molecular level, that is, in fact, makes them one. The multilayer fabric obtained in this way has a high degree of resistance to tearing, cutting, puncture and abrasion. But where are the five layers?

So, some manufacturers use a cunning marketing ploy and claim that the adhesive binder is also two additional layers. This is very convenient for “dirty” PR of your products, since you can always say: “We have a five-layer material, but others have three or even two layers!” If you look at it in detail, you get the following picture of the structure of this fabric: film - cord - film, and there is nothing else there. So it would be correct to call the material for boats “reinforced PVC” and forever forget the concept of “five-layer”. But here it is necessary to make an addition; in addition to reinforced PVC, there are inflatable boats made of Hypolon, but this is a completely different material with different properties. There are also Chinese rowing boats made of unreinforced PVC, but they cannot be considered as a serious watercraft under any circumstances. 2. “More density means a stronger boat.” The second most popular myth is about the density of the fabric from which the boat is made. It says that the greater the density of the fabric, the stronger it is. This is pure marketing! The fact is that PVC fabric, which is used in the production of inflatable boats, is made in Europe (Finland, Germany and the Czech Republic) and South Korea. It is impossible to say for sure which manufacturer is better, but the fact remains that Korean fabric is always slightly denser than European fabric (the most common Korean boat PVC has a density of 1100 g/m2).

At first, most domestic manufacturers used European fabric to produce boats, but “Asian” fabric turned out to be much cheaper, and therefore almost everyone smoothly switched to it. In view of this, it was somehow necessary to convince the buyer that such fabric was somehow better, and - bingo!!! The solution was found in a classic marketing move, when some smart head came up with the idea: “Let’s say that it’s stronger...”. If we compare European-made boat fabric with a density of, for example, 850 g/m2 and the same “Asian” fabric with a density of 1100 g/m2, it turns out that the characteristics of abrasion, tearing and puncture are the same! But a boat made from “Asian” fabric will weigh a little more than a similar one made from European material.

But another aspect is also important here - in addition to PVC fabric, specially certified for the production of inflatable boats, there are fabrics for the production of awnings, swimming pools, etc., which are cheaper in price than boat fabrics. So, some unscrupulous manufacturers make their boats from such materials. And, as a rule, these fabrics have a low density. So if you want a durable boat, don’t look at the density of the fabric, but just ask for a certificate of conformity.

3. “Five-year warranty”

Whoever came up with this needs to erect a monument, as the Germans did for Hindenburg in 1914. When, due to a severe shortage of metal, they erected a monument to him made of... wood. There was also a pile of nails and a hammer. Those wishing to express their respect were asked to “plant” a nail into the monument, and thereby “metalize” it.

But closer to the topic. Let's take a closer look at what this guarantee is given for? And it is given for seams and material. If we look at it in detail, the seam is the strongest place in the boat, since the adhesives used in the production of PVC inflatable boats have extremely high adhesion. In essence, the seam of a boat is a monolith, where the connection between the fabric occurs at the molecular level. Over a long period of time (much more than five years), the fabric may suffer from exposure to the external environment, but a normally glued seam will remain unharmed! If there is something wrong with the seam and at least somewhere it has a gluing defect, then in 99.9% of cases this is detected on the first launch of the boat and the remaining 0.01% - on the second! It is simply impossible not to notice the seam defect. The calculation here is very simple - if there is at least something wrong with the boat, it will be revealed immediately, and if everything is fine, then it will be so in the future.

The guarantee for the material of the boat is given by the fabric manufacturer itself, but it is valid not from the date of sale of the product, but from the date of production. The five-year warranty does not apply to boat accessories - oars, pumps, cans, etc. No one will give it to you for more than a year! And that's the best case scenario. So a five-year warranty is given for seams that, by definition, cannot be repaired under warranty if they were originally made with high quality. And for material for which the manufacturer itself does not bear any responsibility. 4. “Welding or gluing” Really, which is better, a welded seam in an inflatable boat or a glued seam? The fact is that essentially these two methods are the same. It’s just that when welding, this operation is performed by a machine, and when gluing, a person performs it. In the production of boats, an adhesive binder is used, which requires high temperature to activate, so in manual gluing this is done using a high-temperature hair dryer, and in the case of welding, this is done by a machine. Manual gluing is a rather expensive and labor-intensive process, so it can be automated to make it cheaper and faster. But the welding equipment itself is far from cheap.

On the issue of quality and durability. When using automation, failures in setting up the system are inevitable, when the fabric being welded can be burned out or, conversely, underexposed. This happens quite often on all welded boats, from luxury to budget. Well, when gluing by hand, the human factor comes into play when, for example, the gluer is in a bad mood. So everything is very relative. In any case, none of these production methods are better or worse. As they say - everything is the same! 5. “PVC boats are not suitable for repair” This myth was invented by the users themselves, who, after the appearance of PVC inflatable boats in Russia, constantly tried to compare them with boats made of rubber fabric. Fortunately, this myth has already become obsolete. The fact is that if you compare PVC boats in terms of maintainability with rubber ones, then indeed, their repair is more labor-intensive. But that's where the comparison ends.

Any puncture or cut less than five centimeters in length on a PVC boat can be repaired even while traveling. To do this, just use the repair kit, which is included as standard, which includes pieces of fabric and special glue for PVC. To carry out repairs, you must carefully read the instructions on the repair kit or on the tube of glue and strictly follow them. There is no need to try to glue the patch onto an undried, damp surface, do this at temperatures below 0°C, or plug a broken spot on a non-deflated balloon!

Someone must have smiled now, but these are real cases, after which users “piously” believed that PVC boats were unsuitable for repair and began to actively spread this opinion among others! Naturally, a meter-long cut on a cylinder can only be repaired at a specialized service center, just like a boat shot at point-blank range.

You need to be aware that anything can happen while fishing, hunting, and in general during operation. After all, it happens that spaceships crash, but everything is calculated a thousandfold. The simplest thing is to avoid unpleasant incidents as much as possible, and if they do occur, then try to be as prepared as possible for it.

PVC boat for alloys

For rafting and boat trips, first of all focus on:

• length
• cylinder size
• lifting capacity

In order to feel comfortable on rafting, you should choose models from 3 meters . Typically, such events involve 3 or more people. And long versions will allow comrades not to crowd together and give freedom of action and space.

In most cases, rafting takes place on mountain rivers. It is important here that no water gets on board, otherwise all the supplies will get wet and be lost. Consider cylinders from 35 cm in diameter , they will provide protection from splashes.

A large carrying capacity will provide a sufficient amount of gear and equipment. Calculate the approximate load of the vessel and build on this weight. Here you should be careful and avoid overloading, otherwise the boat will sag and the boat trip will not be successful.

In addition, you should know that PVC heats up in the sun and in order not to get burned, you should choose light colors .

For any type of leisure, you should also pay attention to air cylinders . For safety, cylinders are divided into independent compartments, this increases safety . It is worth giving preference where there are more such isolated compartments . If one compartment is punctured, the boat will remain afloat.

Tensile strength

All inflatable parts of boats are made in the form of sealed cylinders. To give the hull of an inflatable vessel the necessary strength, all inflatable elements must be inflated to a certain operating pressure. For onboard cylinders this is usually 250 mBar, for the below-deck keelson and low-pressure inflatable bottom elements - 400 mBar. The specification indicator characterizing the strength of PVC fabric is the tensile strength measured in the direction and across the grain of the fabric base. It is indicated in the specification something like this: 3000/3000 N/50mm. This value indicates that to break a tape 50 mm wide, it is necessary to apply a force of 3000 Newtons in any direction. Translated into everyday language: a 5 cm wide tape can support a suspended load weighing approximately 300 kg.

The action of internal pressure is not the only load on the entire structure of the vessel. It is also necessary to take into account the loads of the vessel during operation caused by additional stresses during torsion and longitudinal bending of the hull, impact with waves and the distribution of the weight of crew members on the onboard cylinders. The faster the ship, the higher the additional loads. Therefore, in the production of small boats with low-power motors, PVC fabric is used with a threefold safety margin, and for heavier and faster vessels - fivefold. Thus, for a small PVC boat with a hinged transom and a side balloon diameter of 40 cm, you can use fabric with a tensile strength of 750 N/50mm. For a boat with a built-in transom, designed to move in planing mode under a motor of, say, 15 hp, and an onboard cylinder of the same diameter, you should use fabric with a strength rating of 1250 N/50mm. For PVC planing boats with a side cylinder diameter of 60 cm, the fabric strength indicator should be 1875 N/50mm.
