Winter fishing in the Chelyabinsk region for crucian carp
Crucian carp is a common fish, therefore it is often found in lakes of the Chelyabinsk region. The value of breeding this type of fish is that it can survive in reservoirs with low oxygen levels. In the reservoirs of the Chelyabinsk region there are two types of crucian carp: silver and gold.

At the very beginning, I was disappointed with the swampy shoreline, which was overgrown with grass, so it was simply impossible to find a place or get close to it. Nearby is the village of Brakovo, it’s good that there were people there who helped us rent a boat. According to local residents, there are a large number of different fish in the waters of Aydykul, but they managed to catch only roach and crucian carp. There was a single bite of a large perch, but it was not possible to catch it - the prey was lost. I recommend that everyone who is going to fish in this place take a swimming device with them, since the banks here are not intended for fishing at all, no equipment will save you.”
- Evgeniy: “Several months ago I visited the Chelyabinsk region for the first time; I wanted to go fishing in the local lakes. Residents of the town where I was staying advised me to go to Kaldy and the recommendation turned out to be good. The water here is crystal clear; the lake can be seen to a depth of 2-3 meters. The bottom is sandy, although in some places there are muddy areas; The shore is also covered with sand, there are many places for fishing. - Igor: “5 years ago I first visited Lake Tishki, located in the Chelyabinsk region, now I try to come back here as often as I can. This is an excellent reservoir for carp fishing: maximum depth is 6 meters, in reed thickets no more than 2-3 meters; There are amazing Chelyabinsk forests around and many places for secluded relaxation. Most of the bottom is covered with silt, and there are submerged snags everywhere, around which I look for prey. Verkhne-Iremel reservoir
The Verkhne-Iremel Reservoir is the main drinking source of the city of Miass and one of the most popular places for fishing in the Chelyabinsk region.

- Stanislav: “The last time I visited the Verkhne-Iremel reservoir was back in winter; already in December there was good and strong ice there, at least 15 cm thick - a real monolith. Small perch, barely, and ruff pecked actively even without the use of bait mixtures; I used maggots and bloodworms as bait. When fishing with balance beams and spoons, we managed to catch several larger perches, but pike and pike perch in this place, as I understand it, are completely absent. I tried to catch small live fish, but only medium and large perch responded. I fished the reservoir at a depth of 2 to 4 meters, but I want to note that the ice, although thick, is transparent. For this reason, you should approach the holes carefully so as not to scare away potential prey, and it is better to go fishing alone.”
- Mikhail: “I opened the fishing season for the May holidays, going to the Verkhne-Iremel reservoir. Conditions for fishing were not the best: there were a lot of poachers with nets and hunters shooting at ducks and making a lot of noise. It seems that fishing and hunting here is not controlled by anyone, these people don’t even try to hide. My catch was not very rich, since only the chebak was biting; I caught 3.5 kg of it in a day.”
- Vladimir: “On the weekend I was passing through the Verkhne-Iremel Reservoir and decided to do a little fishing in its waters, but the entrance located from the side of the dam was closed, and I had to look for a detour through the village of Osmushka. It was difficult to get through, because the road, even in dry weather, was a real challenge, although I was driving an SUV. The first bite occurred only an hour later; we managed to pull out a perch weighing 650 grams. Immediately after this there was a few hours of calm, so I began to get ready to go home, and just before leaving I managed to catch another smaller perch.”
- Vyacheslav: “Judging by the stories of local residents and my own observations, there is no serious predator at all on the Verkhne-Iremel reservoir. At least, I visited it many times, but I never caught a single pike, although I specially prepared equipment for it. Last time I noticed that all local fishermen use float rods; I was almost the only person with a spinning rod. There were no bites for a long time, only after 2 hours I pulled out a small chebak that was caught on its belly. I spent the rest of the day at the reservoir, and caught several more very small chebaks and 5 crucian carp.”

- Vitaly: “In the summer, my friends and I visited Treustan for the first time: the main problem was the road to the right place, since even in dry weather there were a large number of holes with water; if it had also rained, we definitely would not have been able to get there. We arrived at the lake in the evening, on the first day I caught with a jig and only pecked perch weighing up to 360g, but the next day I managed to catch crucian carp weighing up to 500-600g. The main trophy was a carp weighing 1.7 kg, so I can conclude that the fishing was successful - no one was left without a catch.”

- Alexander: “I went to Alakul in the middle of summer. As luck would have it, as soon as I arrived at the lake, a terrible downpour began, which gradually turned into hail. This ruined the whole mood, because I didn’t even count on normal fishing, but during a lull, the first bites suddenly started to appear. He stayed until the next morning and the bite either stopped or started again. As a result, I managed to catch crucian carp weighing from 300 to 500g, the total weight of the catch was 12kg.”
How to catch more fish?
Sugoyak is a large lake with a length of about 5 km; it is located in the same way as Treustan, in the Krasnoarmeysky district of the Chelyabinsk region.

- Victor: “At the end of May I went to Lake Sugoyak and chose a secluded place near a pine forest near the village. The weather was far from May: in the morning the invigorating coolness was felt, and towards the evening a strong wind rose, after which the bites stopped. The bulk of the catch was caught in the first half of the day; in total, I caught 12 crucian carp weighing from 200 to 400 grams.”
- Maxim: “At the end of April I went to Lake Sugoyak for 2 days. On the first day, fishing was not particularly fruitful: if in the morning the crucian carp were still biting, then towards the evening the wind direction began to change and the bites stopped completely, despite feeding the chosen place. The next day the picture was a little better, I changed my location and sat down with a fishing rod in the reed thickets. In total, over both weekends I caught 5 kg of crucian carp.”
- Alexander: “My friend and I decided to close the winter fishing season with a joint trip to Sugoyak. On the way we stopped at a small lake before it, I don’t know the name, but it turned out to be a bad idea: you can’t count on a catch at all in this place. Because of this delay, we reached Lake Sugoyak only at 15:00, immediately made and fed holes, after which we began to wait for prey. For 1.5 hours there was not a single bite, so we moved to the holes left behind by our neighbors and after 15 minutes I caught the first prey - a good and large chebak. Soon the perch began to bite, but it was too small, so we released it back - apparently, a school was passing nearby. We talked with other fishermen, it turned out that we had chosen the wrong bait - we should have used crackers. Due to this mistake, the catch was small, but we still got a lot of pleasure from the trip, relaxation and communication, and also gained experience. Next time we will come to Sugoyak more prepared, and I hope we will catch more fish than during this trip.”
Lake Myrkai
Myrkai is another lake in the Krasnoarmeysky district of the Chelyabinsk region; below are reports on fishing in this place:
- Evgeniy: “I came to Lake Myrkai from Yekaterinburg last spring. I spent several days here, but initially I carefully studied the reservoir: on the western and southern sides the bottom surface has a muddy structure, and on the east it is covered with a layer of sand. Many places with overgrown banks were discovered, which turned out to be a very successful find, since the water was clear and it was not easy to get close to the prey. The bite was stable throughout all the days of my stay; mostly rotan and perch weighing from 500 grams to 14 kg were biting on the lake. Carp showed themselves less often, but we managed to catch several impressive specimens weighing 1.5-4 kg.”
- Mikhail: “After the death that happened in 2012, there were almost no carp and perch left on Lake Myrkai, all my trips were unsuccessful. As a result, I simply started visiting other lakes; there are many of them in the Krasnoarmeysky region. Six months ago I visited Myrkai again after a long break, I caught crucian carp well, and managed to catch several perches. I couldn’t figure out if there was carp here; it didn’t show itself at all.”
- Nikolay: “Myrkai is my favorite lake in the Chelyabinsk region, this year alone I have visited it 7 times. The last time I chose a place on the Shumovo side, arrived there early in the morning and started fishing - I used the most ordinary float tackle, and chose a “sandwich” of corn and maggot as bait. The most active bite was in the first half of the day; in just one day we managed to catch 38 perches. I hung the catch at home, the 5 largest perches weighed 500-600 grams, the rest 150-300 grams.”
Miass River
Most river fishing enthusiasts in the Chelyabinsk region go to the Miass River; they compiled the following fishing reports:
- Vitaly: “I went to Miass in early August, the weather was completely disappointing: in the morning the air temperature dropped sharply, and the river was covered in fog. I thought that in such conditions there would be no bite at all, but in just an hour I managed to catch 6 pikes. Their size and weight were not too impressive - only 300-400 grams, but the catch was still pleasant.”
- Roman: “In March, he made two forays into Miass. The first fishing trip was absolutely unsuccessful: I went home after half an hour, because the pike immediately broke my only tackle. The most offensive thing is that the predator was not so large - it weighed a little more than a kilogram. The second time I chose a new place, fished with oscillating spoons, but I was not lucky enough to catch a pike, but instead the dace bit well, which was especially strange: I never managed to meet it before the end of April or the beginning of May.”
