Humminbird fish finders
, are modern electronic equipment designed to search for fish. In addition, with the help of these devices you can see the bottom topography, measure the depth of reservoirs, and also find objects located at the bottom. Humminbird has long been a leader among other companies developing the latest technologies for fishing. It is the company that produces the most popular fish-finding equipment in America.
Story
Techsonic Industries, Inc. was founded in Eufaula, Alabama in 1971 under the name Fulton Electronics in a small garage with money from local investors. The work began with modifications to Heathkit fish finders, which were introduced to the market as the first Humminbird fish finders.
Humminbird fish finders
In 1975, the company introduced the world's first waterproof fish finder, called the Super Sixty, and suddenly every professional fisherman in the country was hooked. The Super Sixty has become one of the best-selling fish finders. By 1977, Fulton Electronics had become number one in the marine electronics market, prompting the company to change its name to Techsonic Industries, Inc.
Throughout 1984, Techsonic released a series of LCRs, the forerunners of liquid crystal displays. And until 1987, under the Humminbird brand, the LCR4ID fish finder became the best-selling product in both the sport fishing and marine industries.
Throughout the 1990s, Humminbird continued to introduce innovative ideas, including the first revolutionary 3D sonar, the Dimension 3-120. Teleflex Incorporated of Limerick, Pennsylvania, noticed the success of Humminbird, and in 1993 partnered with Techsonic to create the Humminbird® WIDE series, which became the greatest commercial success in Techsonic's history. That same year, Techsonic officially became the Teleflex Company.
The new millennium began with the continuous innovation that has become synonymous with Humminbird. In 2002, the first Piranha series of echo sounders was introduced. SmartCast, a wireless technology released in 2003, opened the market to all fishermen, even those who fished from shore, docks, or small boats. Later that year, Matrix Fishing Systems was released, combining advanced sonar, chartplotter and GPS capabilities for professionals.
In mid-2004, Techsonic Industries was acquired by Johnson Outdoors. Known for its spirit of adventure and heritage of innovation, Johnson Outdoors is a great addition to the Humminbird brand.
The most popular Humminbird fish finder models
Despite the fact that, in general, all products of this brand sell well, there are models that buyers especially highlight. Most likely, they are attracted by the ideal ratio of price, quality and functionality of the devices.
Fishfinder 570
This device is loved by many anglers due to its convenient screen (9 by 9 cm). Black and white image, resolution 640 by 320 pixels, advanced recognition system allows the fisherman to carefully monitor the bait and the hook. With this device you can see even the smallest target from 6.5 cm. Shockproof, waterproof, sensitive and convenient Fishfinder 570 echo sounders have a very affordable price.
Piranhamax 175x
This model belongs to a series of inexpensive devices. Its popularity is due to the price and the “filling” of the device. The functionality of the equipment allows its owner to see in good resolution everything that happens under water.
Piranhamax 175x helps to calculate the size of the fish, find out the structure of the bottom, and bring the object closer. The echo sounder is equipped with backlight, so it can be used for day and night fishing. It has great personalization capabilities that make it convenient and comfortable to use for each individual.
Humminbird in Russia
Humminbird products certainly occupy a leading position in the Russian market. This is due to the high quality of our products, the use of the most modern technologies and, of course, affordable prices for the end consumer. In Russia, the Hummibird company is represented by a wide range from inexpensive devices of the PirahnaMax series to complex navigation systems of the 700, 800, 900,1000, ONIX series, etc.
In addition to a wide dealer network, there is a service center in Russia, whose competence includes warranty and post-warranty service for the entire Humminbird range. All echo sounders officially imported into the Russian Federation have a Russian-language menu and a two-year company warranty.
As there are more and more fishing enthusiasts, the dealer network is constantly growing and developing. Today, Humminbird echo sounders can be purchased in almost any city in Russia, from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok. Progress does not stand still, and the Humminbird company moves hand in hand with it, annually updating its line of devices. Every year on the Russian market you can find a highly modern new product from Humminbird.
Travel speed
Determining the speed of movement is the province of advanced echo sounders, such as, for example, the Matrix 47 3D and Humminbird 343C. This function can be achieved by purchasing an additional sensor (photo 5), or by connecting it to a GPS echo sounder. In conditions of oar fishing, the possible prospects from knowing the speed of movement seem vague to me, but regarding trolling in a large shallow body of water, I can tell you an example from my life.
I once had the opportunity to go fishing, where in addition to our boat, several other crews took part in combing the reservoir. Each boat was equipped with a walkie-talkie, so the navigators constantly exchanged information - where they were, what depth they were going through, what bait they were using, and so on. There was no bite in the morning, but closer to lunch, information began to come in more and more often from one of the boats about the capture of respectable pike. Of course, the lucky ones shared the necessary information with the others, and almost in the first place they put the speed of movement, focusing on the fact that it should be exactly like that.
Whether this is a coincidence or a common occurrence, I cannot say in the affirmative for this type of fishing, due to insufficient experience in this area. But the fact remains: having taken advantage of all the recommendations of the successful anglers, the rest of the participants in that fishing trip also began to fish.

Humminbird Helix 7x SI GPS Chartplotter/Fish Finder
By purchasing the Humminbird Helix 7x SI GPS color chartplotter/fish finder , you get a fish finder and navigator in one device. It is possible to mark depths, destinations in places of interest and the shortest route to them, view and save courses that will reflect the actual movement of the boat. Great for viewing the bottom, topography, underwater holes and finding fish. It uses sonar technology, in which a sensor sends sound waves into the water. Bouncing echoes are shown on the display, creating a very accurate picture of the underwater world, including the distance to underwater objects, bottom, fish and structure. The echo sounder sensor has a mount that allows it to be installed on the transom of various boats. When moving, the fishfinder draws changes in depth on the screen, thereby creating a profile of the bottom.
A high-quality device has a widescreen screen that helps you view the hydroacoustic image. The thin edge of the display profile increases free space. The sonar uses a unique Side Imaging technology (full 180 degree view): the side beam view covers 74 m on both sides of your vessel. High-quality sonar cuts through the darkness of the water with crystal clarity. Up to 150 m of bottom coverage from one side to the other. In addition to the SI beams, there are DownImaging thin beams with a razor blade and a traditional DualBeam sensor of 20 and 60 degrees: wide for finding fish, narrow for viewing the bottom, finding holes. The return rays of these waves create snapshots of the space below the boat. The Humminbird Helix 7x SI ZhPS can be used in winter for ice fishing, you just need to turn on the “Ice Fishing” flasher mode. Shows depth, temperature, bottom type, power voltage, thermocline, fish, algae and many other parameters. In addition, it is capable of displaying other digital values when purchasing additional equipment.

Peculiarities: | ||
Side Imaging is a unique sonar with side-scan technology. The main advantage is that it gives a general overview of a large area of water. Now you can see with photographic clarity everything that's going on right below the bottom of your boat. Flooded trees and bushes, bridge pilings, rocks and any other structures will appear in full detail as you pass over them. Side beam visibility covers 73 meters on either side of your boat and is limited to a depth of 30 meters. Full 180 degree coverage.
Down Imaging is a unique sonar technology that provides high-quality reflection of detailed information about the area directly below your vessel. High-frequency thin rays, returning when reflected from the surface, create a picture on the display. The beams operate at two frequencies: 455 kHz, (75 degrees for better overall picture, depth) and 800 kHz, (45 degrees for sharpness). With DI you can see fish, reefs, rocks, bridges and any other structure in stunning detail.
DualBeam Plus Sonar - Dual beams provide excellent detail and coverage. Beam 200 for high detail of fish, structures and bottom profile. Wide, 600 beam provides wide area coverage for fish and bait control. You can view these rays separately, or you can combine both views on one screen. Area coverage is equal to your depth.
SwitchFire - screen clearing: Clear Mode: Time Variable Gain (TVG) software sifts sonar returns to show only schools of fish and bottom structures. This mode is ideal for fishing in shallow water and rough bottoms, or for reducing unwanted disturbances in the water column. Max Mode: See how the return signals create a detailed image on the screen. You will see the smallest underwater objects - even temperature wedges and water currents.
A precision GPS receiver with unrivaled innovative technology. All Combo models have a GPS receiver with WAAS support. Comes standard with all Combo models and provides an accuracy level of up to 2.5m. The sensor provides more accurate location data than standard GPS receivers.

Main functions of Helix 7 x SI GPS:
Freeze Frame and Active - when the screen freezes, a controlled cursor appears. The depth of the site will be reflected in the table at the bottom of the screen.
Bottom Presentation - by the combination of shades it is possible to determine a hard, soft or rocky bottom.
Bottom View - the ability to select a method for displaying the bottom and bottom structures on the display.
Bottom Lock - The bottom lock constantly draws the bottom at a constant point on the display despite changes in depth. This makes the bottom outline flat but effectively shows the fish on or near the bottom.
Sonar View - the view on the echo sounder screen shows a picture of the returned signals over time (history).
Zoom View - This mode increases the screen's ability to distinguish signals from objects located very close to each other.
Split Sonar View - view with split beams. This mode allows you to view the image of each beam in a separate window (80 kHz on the left, 200 kHz on the right).
Big Digits View - A screen with large digits shows data in a large, easy-to-read format.
Ice Fishing - winter fishing mode for static fishing from ice.
X-Press Menu - includes those functions whose values change most frequently to optimize the sonar for current conditions.
Sensitivity - controls how much detail is shown on the screen. Increasing the sensitivity shows more returns from small fish and creates noise on the water so the display can be overloaded with information. When working in clear water and greater depths, increased sensitivity shows weaker return beams, which can be interesting. Lower sensitivity reduces the chaos on the screen that can sometimes occur in dark, muddy water. If the sensitivity is set too low, the display may not show all the return rays and may miss the fish.
Upper Range - the upper range sets a special value for the upper limit of the viewed range.
Lower Range - Lower Range sets a special value for the lower limit of the range being viewed.
Chart Speed - the map scrolling speed changes the speed at which information flows across the screen, and accordingly, the detail of the map. A higher speed shows more information and is preferred by most fishermen, however, sonar information flows through the display quickly. A slower speed keeps the information on the display longer, allowing you to see the entire area, but details of the bottom and fish become compressed and may be difficult to see.
Bottom range - it is possible to control the value of the water column (in Sonar Zoom mode and when Bottom Lock is turned on).
Bottom Lock - crosses out a constant point on the screen, regardless of changes in depth. This blurs the outline of the bottom, but is effective when showing fish or near the bottom (in Sonar Zoom mode).
Depth Alarm - depth alarm signal.
Depth Alarm Fish ID+ - an alarm sounds when the Fish ID+ fish symbol appears on the screen.
Low Battery Alarm - low battery alarm signal.
Temp Alarm - An alarm sounds when the water temperature detected by your system reaches the set value.
Alarm Tone —sets the alarm tone.
Beam Select - Beam Select sets which sonar signals will be displayed on the screen.
Surface Clutter - it is possible to configure a filter for surface noise caused by algae, aeration, etc.
Fish ID+ - Uses advanced signal processing to interpret sonar returns and displays fish icons when certain conditions are met.
Fish Sensitivity —Enhances the instrument's ability to identify a returned fish signal by controlling the identification algorithm.
RTS Window - appears on the right side only on the sonar screen. Information is always updated at the highest possible speed for a given depth and conditions. The real-time window shows only signals returned from those objects (bottom, underwater structures, fish) that are included in the signal beam at the current moment. The real-time window can be turned on and off.
Depth Lines - depth lines divide the screen into several parts.
Surface Clutter - controls the filtering of surface noise caused by suspended matter or aeration.
Noise Filter —Adjusts a sonar filter to limit noise on the display from sources such as boat motors, turbulence, and other sonar instruments.
Max Depth - sets the maximum depth at which the device will operate.
Water Type - selects the device settings so that they correspond to the salinity of the water.
Optional equipment: | ||
Triplog (TC-W) - Speed/temperature sensor provides speed and temperature information and also enables a trip log function. (to connect this sensor, an AS TY adapter cable is required)
Batteries of various capacities will allow you to use echo sounders and other electrical devices.
Various chargers will help keep your battery charged.
The holders are designed to make it easier to mount the echo sounder transducer on the transom or side of the boat.
AS-HHGPS cable for connecting devices compatible with NMEA 0183.
Software from Humminbird AutoChart PC Software or AutoChart PRO PC Software - uses your sonar returns and GPS signals to build your charts. Simply record the information on an AutoChart Zero Lines card, import the data onto your computer into AutoChart PRO PC, and it will convert it into a water map.
A PC cable connects the fish finder to a PC, allowing access to software and new features. |
Humminbird Fish Finder Features
Humminbird fish finders are popular. In order not to make a mistake in choosing a model, price, required characteristics, it is necessary to take into account your needs and purpose of use.
Let's look at some possibilities using an example.
Let's take the Humminbird PiranhaMAX 150 model, namely its main technical characteristics. This echo sounder is waterproof (all echo sounders have these properties), displays the structure of the bottom, determines the depths and sizes of fish, it has a temperature sensor, a speed sensor, and magnification. This is a single beam echo sounder.
What does single beam mean?
Single-beam echo sounders are better at determining the bottom topography, but the presence of fish is less well recorded. The display depends on the radiation angle: the larger it is, the larger the area captured. But again, this depends on the depth of the reservoir; if the reservoir is deep, then the area for capturing objects increases.
The temperature sensor suggests biting activity, which is good. Since certain types of fish bite at a certain water temperature.
The display here is small (128x160), which means the image clarity won't be very good, which is why it's cheap. It's black and white, but that doesn't really matter.
Based on the above characteristics, it is clear that this model has no bells and whistles and is intended for specific purposes. Of course, there are other models, more expensive, which are more complex in design and better quality (Humminbird 787C Combo, Humminbird 981c SI, Humminbird 596c HD), but a high price does not mean that it will do something supernatural, the image quality will be better, higher magnification factor and so on.
The price depends on the number of rays, screen resolution, power, radiation angle and other characteristics, but you can get by with a simple, inexpensive model if you know all the intricacies of the device, its exact purpose, the depth of the reservoir, etc. Therefore, when choosing a model, you should start by determining what you want from this device.

After purchasing a sonar for fishing from many fishermen, most often for beginners, a completely logical question arises about how exactly the settings should be set in order to get the best result.
Additional equipment for echo sounders
The popularity of echo sounders and the scale of their use are, of course, great, because modern devices are equipped with a huge number of additional functions, which allows them to be used not only for searching for prey in the depths of water. Marine adventurers also use this equipment, as many sonars are equipped with GPS functions, speed sensors, radars, etc.
How to choose a fish finder
Echo sounders for fishing are no longer a luxury, as they were just a few years ago. The cost of these devices varies and has a fairly large price range. The opportunities they provide to their owners are extensive. In addition to the fact that thanks to them you can evaluate the structure of the bottom and the location of fish accumulation, additional options that come with some models further expand the horizons of using sonars.

General recommendations for setup
- The manufacturer offers many different series and models of echo sounders, differing in technical characteristics. Accordingly, each specific model requires a certain setting and approach as a whole. Download the Russian version of the instructions specifically for your Humminbird echo sounder.
- Yes to experiments - there is no need to be afraid of making things worse. If something goes wrong and the efficiency of the echo sounder with the user settings decreases, you can always return to the factory settings.
- We determine the characteristics of fishing. If fishing is done at a depth of 5-8 meters, you need to explore the waters at this distance. Only with the help of manual settings can you achieve the most accurate result and clear image display.
- Setting the sensitivity criteria of the device - there is no single correct indicator for all fishing conditions without exception. The adjustment must be made during operation, starting from 75% and constantly adjusting in order to find the optimal indicator.
- Adjusting the color gamut - by trial and error, the optimal indicator is selected, at which the image is as clear as possible.
- Noise reduction and image cleaning – it is advisable to set these settings to the lowest level. Thus, the user will receive the highest quality image.

Humminbird PiranhaMAX 180 echo sounder (review)
This device has established itself as one of the best echo sounders in the budget category due to its high power and versatility.
The model is three-beam, which provides a very good overview of the water column. The radiation angle of one beam is 20°, the other two – 35°. Operating frequency – 200 and 455 kHz, respectively. The power of this echo sounder is 200 W, the maximum value reaches 1600 W. The echo sounder is equipped with a monochrome four-inch display with a resolution of 240x160 pixels.
Fish detected in the water are displayed on the screen as a filled (narrow beam) or empty (wide beam) symbol. The model also has a backlight for more comfortable use of the device in the dark.
The fish finder supports several useful functions, including:
- Fish ID (determining fish size);
- Zoom (image enlargement);
- Structure ID (display of the bottom structure);
- Bottom Black View (displaying the bottom of the reservoir in the form of a black stripe).
This model also boasts the presence of a special sound alarm, which can notify the fisherman when the desired depth is reached or, for example, when a school of fish is detected. The device can also measure water temperature.
The Humminbird PiranhaMAX 180 comes with the following equipment: the echo sounder itself, a transducer with a 6 m long cable, a power cable for the device, instructions and a number of fasteners for the device.
The price of the Humminbird PiranhaMAX 180 echo sounder is $250-300.
