What it is
Bombarda (other names: Italian float, or sbirulino) is functionally a kind of “hybrid” of a float and a sinker. It allows you to move baits of various types in a fairly wide range of depths. Another advantage of the bombard is the ability to cast light-weight baits over a long distance.
Externally, the bombard is a spindle-shaped float that can move freely along the main line thanks to the tube located inside. The bombard itself can be made of various materials. Bombards can have different buoyancy and colors.
Most bombards come with a built-in sinker and have a constant weight, but there are also bombards with an internal cavity, by filling which the fisherman himself determines the weight of the gear depending on the fishing method and the type of prey. Bombarda for sea fishing can have the color of sea water, be matte (this gives it a resemblance to jellyfish), dark in color or completely transparent.
Each of the considered bombard design options is used for certain fishing conditions and the capture of a specific type of fish.
Gear structure
Peculiarities of catching grayling on a bulldozer
The gear for sea fishing using a bombard is quite simple: the main line is threaded through the bombard, and a swivel is attached to the end of the line. In some cases there may be more swivels (for example, 3). A short leash is then attached to the swivel. The bait is located at the very end of the leash.
A mandatory element of the tackle are two locking elements at the end of the main line, which determine the boundaries of the bombard’s travel along it. The lower stopper, located 3–5 cm from the end of the fishing line, protects the swivel from colliding with the bombarda, and the upper one, located above the bombarda, prevents the bombarda from sliding too high along the main fishing line.
There is another sequence of arrangement of gear elements, but it is not used for sea fishing.
For sea fishing, a fishing rod should be chosen from 3 to 6 m with a weight from 10 to 60 g. There are no special requirements for the structure. The reel is inertialess, size – 2500–4000. Monofilament line – 0.2–0.25 mm – length 110–120 m.

Among the wide variety of fishing gear, there are those that many amateur fishermen have heard about, many have seen them and even held them in their own hands, but have never had to use them in practice. And this is quite understandable.
The concept of “sbirulino” or “bombarda” came into our fishing lexicon not so long ago. These words refer to the same fishing equipment. Fishing using a bombard
, the thing is very exciting, it makes it possible to catch completely different fish with one tackle. You can successfully catch a wide variety of fish with sbirulino, both in fresh water and in the sea.
If initially the bombard was used only for catching various types of salmon fish in rivers (trout, char, salmon, grayling, lenka), today it is successfully used for catching various sea fish. You can catch mullet, sea bass, croaker, garfish, weasel, horse mackerel, bonito, etc. using such equipment.
Bombard shaped
This is a spindle-shaped float with a plastic tube inside. It resembles an empty refill, like a fountain pen. A fishing line is passed through this tube, and a swivel or a chain of 3 swivels is attached to the end of the fishing line. Next, a thin leash is attached to the swivel at the end of which there is a hook. The body of sbirulino can be made in a variety of options, from plastic that has the color of sea water, from matte plastic that imitates a jellyfish, from completely transparent plastic, or plastic painted in dark colors. There are craftsmen who can make a bombarda from an ordinary wine cork, which has a lead weight inside, which can be changed according to desire or fishing conditions.
According to their purpose and design, bombards are divided into sinking, floating, and neutrally buoyant bombards. Each of these options is used for certain fishing conditions, for different types of fish. The advantage of a bombard is that it glides along the main line and is suitable for various casting distances.
Sea fishing for bombard
, is very convenient for fishing from the shore, pier, pier and other various coastal structures. The optimal rod length for such fishing is from 3.5 to 4.5 meters. The reel is equipped with a fishing line with a diameter of 0.20-0.25 mm. The line should be threaded inside the bombard; it is better if it is sinking. A corkscrew made of silicone is also placed on the fishing line to protect the swivel knot, which is tied to the main fishing line. The swivel and stopper are the stopper for the bombard. Leashes with a diameter of 0.15-0.17 mm are attached to swivels; the length of such leashes can vary from 1 m to 1.3 m.
Fishing at sea using a bombard
, has its own exclusive baits and attachments; the best is considered to be the Nereis (sea worm). There are especially many such worms in Sivash and bottom sediments of the Sea of Azov. Nereis is a universal bait for any fish caught in the Black Sea. However, if there are difficulties with the sea worm, then it is recommended to use bait such as sliced fish, shrimp meat or whole shrimp, chicken giblets, you can try fishing with lard, fresh meat, sausage or cheese.
For sea fishing, bombards are usually selected in advance, this is due to the fact that bombards must be selected by weight; on average, its weight can be 20-40 grams. It all depends on the size of the intended catch, the type of fishing rod, fishing conditions, wind force, and weather. So, for example, if you plan to catch garfish, it is better to use a bombard weighing from 20 to 30 grams. As for the hooks, they must be very sharp and made of thin wire. The sizes of such hooks according to the international classification are from No. 12 to No. 16.
To sea fishing for bombarda
was successful, in addition to all the listed nuances, you need to be able to properly bait a sea worm on a hook. This makes it possible to detect fish at the first bite. In this case, when baiting, the worm is pulled along the fishing line, and the hook should be in the body of the worm, close to its tail. If you attach the worm in this way, the fish will be spotted without any problems.
Tackle equipped with a bombard and a leader with a light bait always brings good catches and often works even more successfully than other types of sea fishing.
A variety of factors can influence the behavior of fish during fishing. For example, it could be a change in weather, or the fish could be frightened by larger sea predators or birds. So the garfish may search for food in the water column, or in the upper layers, or may even lie to the bottom. For such moments, different bombards are needed, slowly sinking, sinking and floating, this is how it is determined where fishing will take place at the bottom, in the water column or in the uppermost layers. In addition, the fishing horizon is influenced by the speed at which the rig with a bombard is deployed. Many anglers believe that the most catchy sea fishing is with a bombard
, when a sinking bombard is used. At the same time, the catches include a variety of fish species.
This type of equipment is to some extent universal; sbirulino can successfully replace spinning, float and bottom tackle. Also, using a bombard, you can use the lightest spinning baits as efficiently as possible, both when casting long distances and when casting over a short distance.
At the same time, the weight of the bombard and its qualitative characteristics (floating, slowly sinking and sinking) make it possible to fish the fishing spot from the surface to the very bottom.
If during fishing you do not have the necessary set of such floats for buoyancy characteristics, then it is quite possible to turn a floating light bombard into a sinking one. To do this, you should attach a lead pellet to the main fishing line and leave the leash of the rig as free as possible. After this, the leader can present the bait in the most natural way and is very effective.
If you are interested in this method of sea fishing, be sure to try it, perhaps it will become your favorite fishing method.
Happy fishing!

Mullet fishing technique
When fishing with a bombard in the Black Sea, mullet is of particular interest. This small fish, only 20–22 cm long, is loved by many for its tasty meat. The recommended tackle for mullet is the following: rod - up to 4.5 m, slow action, medium test (15-40 g), spool with a capacity of 3000, 100-120 m of fishing line 0.22-0.25 mm. Using one swivel is enough. The leash is selected from 1 to 1.5 m long; It is best to use 0.16 mm nylon fishing line for it. Hooks No. 16.
The bait can be very varied, but it is best to use a sea worm (Nereis).
The technique of catching mullet with a bombard is quite simple. First, a possible location for the chosen fishing method is sought. It is advisable to pre-feed the mullet, just before fishing.
Fishing for garfish
Fishing for garfish in the Black Sea is no less interesting. In this case, it is necessary to use floating or slow-sinking bombards weighing 10–40 g. The rod can be up to 4 m long with a slow action and a test corresponding to the weight of the bombard. The fishing line is either monofilament with a diameter of 0.32 mm or braided (0.2 mm); its length is up to 100 m.
The leash is chosen to be long enough - from 2 m. It is advisable to use a swivel that is light and mobile, since the garfish rotates intensively when fishing. For garfish, a No. 6 hook is recommended.
Casts when fishing for garfish should be at the maximum distance allowed by the fishing gear and skill. Posting is performed at medium speed. Garfish often swallow bait deeply, so it is advisable to have an extractor on hand.
Fishing with a bombard
Fishing for garfish using a bombard from the shore has become very popular in the Black Sea. The habitat radius of this fish in the coastal zone is up to 100 m at a depth of up to 6 m. Therefore, it is worth preparing gear for long-distance casting. You can catch:
For casting, the best option is a light spinning rod, at least 2.5 m long, equipped with a spinning reel.
The fishing line used is monofilament with a diameter of about 0.3 mm or braided with a thickness of no more than 0.2 mm. The leash should have a size of up to 2 m and a diameter one step smaller than the main line. Experienced fishermen recommend attaching the leash to the base through a special swivel, this is due to the fact that when fishing, the garfish spins strongly, wrapping itself in fishing line. The optimal size of hooks is No. 7-8; you should choose the sharpest products.
A bombard is a special float that has an oblong shape and a certain heaviness compared to a weightless bait. The use of a bombard allows you to throw the bait to the desired distance (distance reaches 50 m). Floating, slow and fast sinking bombards are produced. The first type of bombard is the most effective.

Using a shock leader reduces the likelihood of line breaking when casting. It should be one step thicker than the main line, and its size should not be less than twice the length of the rod.
