Bombard tackle: fishing with a bombard and how to assemble it yourself

Bombarda (or sbirulino) is a professional fishing device designed for spinning fishing. Used in conjunction with conventional lightweight equipment to increase the casting distance of a spinning rod.

The Bombard's rig is catchy in that it makes it possible to throw many types of gear, for example: small wobblers, silicone fry or various kinds of spinners far from the shore.

In addition, a similar design of the float and fishing with a bombard allows you to use any bait in any type of reservoir and at different depths.

Main types of bombards

In order to use the bombard correctly and effectively, you must understand the principles of operation of the device and know what types of this device there are.

Today, sbirulino is used by amateur fishermen more and more often, so it is not surprising that their range is growing.

Despite their external similarity, bombards have completely different characteristics, such as volume, weight and buoyancy parameters.

Floating and sinking bombard

Based on the level of buoyancy, bombards are divided into three types:

  • floating on the surface of a reservoir;
  • completely drowning (drowning);
  • gradually sinking (drowning).

Loaded and empty

By type, bombards are easily divided into the following groups:

  1. With lead sinker. Typically, lead weights are used to effectively weight bombards. The float is also provided with an empty cavity.

This model allows the fisherman to choose the volume of water to fill the inside of the float.

  1. With an empty internal cavity.

Every fishing enthusiast chooses for himself which model to prefer in a given case. Usually it all depends on the characteristics of fishing (winter or summer, shallow or deep).

Sbirulino float (bombard): installation of equipment and fishing techniques

Sbirulino or “bombard” is a float designed specifically for spinning fishing. It has its own weight, which allows you to throw a light bait, weighing a few grams, over a long distance and retrieve it at different depths, depending on the purpose of the float, as well as its type.

According to the type of buoyancy, such floats are divided into 3 types:

Depending on the type of float used, the bait can be placed at the surface of the water (floating), in the water column (medium buoyancy), or at the very bottom (sinking).

At the same time, floats can be loaded using various methods:

  • With built-in sinker.
  • With a cavity inside the float, which is filled with water, directly next to the reservoir.

Floats with a built-in sinker have specified characteristics, and a float with a cavity inside allows you to set the required characteristics, depending on the amount of water. From such a float you can make a floating, sinking or a float with medium buoyancy. As far as application technique is concerned, there are no differences.

As a rule, for long casts, rods with a length of 3 to 6 meters, having an appropriate action (hard) and a test of at least 40-50g are used.

The reel you choose is the most common, but inertia-free, with a fishing line capacity of 0.25 mm in diameter, about 100 m.

The fishing line is selected based on the fishing conditions. Considering the long-casting factor, it is better to stick to braided line. It will allow you to quickly respond to floats. But this absolutely does not mean that you cannot use monofilament fishing line.

The sbirulino float can have different sizes and weights. As a rule, they opt for a float weighing about 40g.

For this part of the tackle, it is better to use a piece of fluorocarbon, which will not alarm the fish so much. The length can vary between 1.5-3 meters. This is due to the fact that a large float can alarm the fish, so it will be better if it is located as far as possible from the bait.

Hooks and their size are selected depending on the size of the fish. They should fit freely into the fish's mouth and, naturally, be very sharp.

The use of swivels is mandatory, since light-weight baits can twist the line strongly. This type of equipment uses a triple swivel, which guarantees protection against twisting.

Assembling a fishing rod with a bombard

As a rule, if there is a need to equip a bombard, then the fishing rod should be selected taking this element into account. There is only one way to assemble such a spinning rod.

First of all, when choosing a fishing rod, you need to remember that you will be casting the fishing rod over long distances, so the bombard should be the optimal size for you.

The standard length of the stick is from 3 to 6 m.

Then a parabolic rod action is suitable, and the shape of the test is determined by the weight of the float itself. In this situation, a load weighing about 45-65 grams is sufficient.

For this type of fishing rod, choose a standard spinning reel model.

The spool must hold at least 100 meters of fishing line of medium or large diameter, and the fractional brake is adjusted immediately before the start of fishing.

Bombard fishing does not involve the use of all types of fishing lines - only monofilament or braided options are suitable. If you want to cast a float over long distances, then it is preferable to buy a braided fishing line.

The bombard itself and the tackle are chosen based on the type of fish you plan to catch. Also, the float is selected based on the type and weight of the fish. To avoid twisting of the fishing line while fishing, you must use a swivel.

You also need not a simple hook, but a special one - made of durable materials and with large pointed stings.

But even if you manage to choose the right accessories for fishing such a difficult task as fishing with a bombard, you still need to know how to attach this very bombard to a fishing tool.

Sbirulino float: correct installation of equipment and fishing technique

Sbirulino (or as it is also called “bombard”) is a special float for spinning fishing, which has its own load and is intended only for loading your light equipment equipped with flies, light twisters and wobblers.

Thanks to sbirulino, you can throw a bait weighing less than a gram over a hundred meters and move it near the surface of the water, in the depths or even along the bottom.

Sbirulino floats have three types of buoyancy:

  • floating (does not sink in water);
  • medium buoyancy (sinks very, very slowly);
  • drowning (drowning in water).

By choosing a floating sbirulino, you will be placing the bait almost at the surface of the water. While sinking will allow the bait to sink to the bottom.

There are also different types of float loading:

  • with built-in lead sinker inside;
  • with a cavity inside the float that is filled with water from the reservoir before fishing.

There is no fundamental difference in the practical application of these varieties.

rod , from 3 to 5-6 meters. The structure is parabolic, which will allow you to make long casts with a heavy Sbirulino float. The test should not be lower than the weight of the float. Often, 40-50 grams of dough is enough.

The reel is a regular spinning reel (adjusted clutch, spool capacity per 100 meters of line 0.25).

Fishing line - it is better to use braid, because fishing is carried out with a bite on the tip of the rod and you cannot be late with hooking. Braided line does not stretch when stretched and is therefore preferred. But using monofilament is also appropriate.

Sbirulino can come in a variety of sizes, it all depends on the casting distance you need. Typically, floats weighing no more than 40 grams are chosen.

Leash. Fluorocarbon is often used as a leader line due to its invisibility for fish in the water. The length of such a leash is from 1.5 meters to 3 meters. This length is due to the fear that the float may scare the fish, so it should be located away from the bait.

Hooks (subject to fishing with natural bait). Depends on the size of the fish (any of the hooks used should easily fit into the fish’s mouth). And, of course, they must be sharp.

Swivels. The classic rig uses a triple swivel. It provides 100% protection against line twisting. Flies and other lures often twist the line too much. If you don't have a triple swivel, try connecting 2-3 swivels to the fasteners.

Wobbler YO-ZURI L-Minnow 44 is a medium-sized wobbler that performs well when fishing with sbirulino.

There are quite a lot of all kinds of equipment with such a heavy float. With a large number of hooks both before and after sbirulino. But we will look at the classic equipment, and adjusting it to a large number of hooks will not be difficult.

Installation of sbirulino:

  1. A sbirulino float is put on the main line.
  2. Then there is a rubber stopper that will prevent the heavy float from hitting the knot that attaches the carabiners to the fishing line.
  3. Behind the stopper there is a swivel or a series of swivels of three pieces (without carabiners you will not be able to connect three swivels manually, so it is best to buy a ready-made chain of three swivels, and it is not recommended to use fasteners, they are too cumbersome), as already mentioned, this prevents crazy twisting the line.
  4. Next is a leash with a length of 1.5 to 3 meters.
  5. A fly or any other bait is tied to the end. Also used as bait is a hook with natural bait (maggot, worm, corn, insects).

This rig has a leash after the sbirulino, but there are rigs in which the sbirulino is the end point of the fishing line , and before it there is a fishing line made of leash material, which has several leashes with flies.

  • flies;

  • foam balls;
  • wobblers (usually surface);
  • almost any animal and plant attachments.

Dry flies and streamers are the most popular baits when fishing for sbirulino.

First of all, bombarding still implies surface fishing and you can look for fish in shallow water, or you can catch exclusively riding fish.

Lure. When fishing with sbirulino, bait is not always used, but it is really better to collect white fish at one point using bait.

When there is a current, use clay to create a mixture with bait so that the balls do not get carried away by the current. In still water everything is much simpler.

Wiring. After casting, a lot depends on the wiring and there are several wiring styles:

  1. Very slow uniform wiring.
  2. Retrieving with the tip of the rod moving 2-3 meters, then returning to the starting point, reeling in with a reel, the bait is in place at this time.
  3. Slow wiring with twitching.

The frequency and amplitude of twitching must be obtained in practice while fishing. An important parameter is the game of the bait. If the twister you are using does not play with its tail when moving slowly, increase the speed, or make the tail lighter and wriggling.

  1. Any more or less large float for float fishing will be suitable as a sbirulino float. All you have to do is load it with pellets or a more or less large sinker, but make sure that your float does not sink, if, of course, you are aiming to make a floating bombard.
  2. The second way is to make a bombard from polystyrene foam . It can be hard, or it can be soft. To prevent the fish from being scared by the bright white color (and it is known to reflect light very strongly and is most noticeable in the water), try covering such a float with either a dark cloth or painting it with a waterproof black marker.
  3. A sbirulino float can be made from a syringe. You will only need to drill a couple of holes in the opposite sides of the syringe and sbirulino, the main load of which is a cavity filled with water - you are ready.

Until recently, the Sbirulino float was in the shade and was not used by many fishermen. Even now it is not so popular, but it is clearly underestimated. It has no disadvantages, but a lot of advantages. Try it and see for yourself. We will be glad to hear your experience in the comments.

My tackle constantly gets tangled if I use several leashes with hooks. And if you use one hook at the end of the fishing line, it also gets tangled. The least amount of confusion occurs when there is a leash or two first, and then sbirulino at the end of the line. Thus, on a pond where I had never been able to catch anything with a spinning rod, I immediately caught two perches (small ones).

Bombard equipment

There are many methods for installing bombard rigs using sbirulino. We invite you to consider the traditional option of installing a bombard:

We place the reel on the fishing rod and wind the main line onto it. We attach a float, and tie a buffer made of a piece of foam plastic to the fishing line. We attach swivels to the fishing line.

We hook the leash to the outer hook of the swivel. We attach a hook with the prepared bait onto it.

Some fishermen prefer to make bombarda (sbirulino) themselves. Let's see how they do it.

It is possible to load your light bait, such as a fly, with a small lead shot. This will allow you to deepen the fly a little while fishing when fishing on surface sbiruline.

Making your own bombard

Experienced fishermen claim that a bombard made at home works many times more efficiently than one purchased from a fishing store.

Source materials for making sbirulino yourself:

  • large float of any shape;
  • a piece of dense foam;
  • syringe without needle.

How to make a bombard with your own hands:

The basis of our bombard will be a regular float, which is weighted with lead shot. You also need to take a piece of polystyrene foam and use a hacksaw to cut it out to the required size and shape.

Now you need to cover the float with bright waterproof paint, thread a plastic tube inside and carefully string a lead sinker onto it.

Don't forget to secure the entire structure with superglue. Thread the main line through the tube with a hole made in advance.

If you prefer to make a bombard, for example, from a syringe, then you need to make a recess for the fishing line, thread it inside and secure it.

Of course, there are other ways to make fishing sbirulino, but at the amateur level the above methods are quite suitable.

Kinds

Expensive industrial designs of bombards are marked in such a way that, based on the applied index, the fisherman will be able to determine the degree of buoyancy of the product, but not only that.

  1. One numerical designation is the mass of the float, which can be understood by the Latin letters after the numbers (Gr).
  2. The other indicates lift. For the uninitiated fisherman, this indicator does not mean anything, so when choosing, you should consult with the seller. The fact is that some manufacturers indicate lifting force using the color of the float. For example, white color is intended for a completely floating product, and black for a sinking one.

Taking into account the specified data, the angler will be able to select the optimal equipment for the expected fishing conditions. The following classification of sbirulino is accepted:

  • floating bombard;
  • smoothly plunging;
  • quickly sinking.

Accordingly, the fish that prefer the indicated horizons are caught. In the upper layers they hunt for asp, large roach, sabrefish, in the middle layers - for perch, pike, in the bottom layers - for pike perch and other worthy species.

Sbirulino floats are made with a built-in weight, which is located in different places of the product, such as:

  • in the lower part there is a thickened part, and then the float is immersed vertically in the water;
  • the load is evenly distributed along the entire length of the float, which allows you to keep it parallel to the bottom when moving and stopping in the current;
  • Only the central part of the bombard is loaded, which also allows it to be kept parallel to the bottom, but only with tension; as soon as the line weakens, depending on the strength of the current, the float begins to oscillate;
  • the load is located at the top of the body of the bombard, which gives the product a kind of play when moving and braking;
  • the load is spread at both ends of the float and, with the correct selection of lifting force, it hangs in the water column.

Varieties of bombards with differently located loading
Both lead and water are used as a load on sbirulino. In the second case, the distribution of gravity is more even. By adding or decreasing the load, you adjust the degree of immersion.

As you can see, there are several varieties of bombards and a fisherman, going to a pond, can choose the most suitable gear setup.

Bombard for sea fishing

Bombarda for professionals

Unlike fishermen, who see sbirulino only as a means of increasing spinning capabilities when the bite is bad, it is not enough for professional sbirulin fishermen to simply purchase a few floats and light baits for them. Here we are already considering a float as a thin fishing tool ; the effectiveness of fishing depends on its quality and experience. Standard set of “picker”:

  1. Special spinning rod, many of them meet these indicators - length 3–5 m (explained by the fact that the leash in this gear is often quite long); “parabolic” action (this spinning rod has a smoother casting); casting 1-40 gr. (it is within these weight limits that 90% of the floats); sensitive tip (the main indicator of biting), 10–16 rings.
  2. A capacious spool (casting takes place over 100 m), a reel with a low gear ratio (as a rule, slow retrieving is required).
  3. Main monofilament line (0.20–0.26 mm), with low stretch. Special fishing lines for sbirulino are made, for example, Balser Camtec Sbiro, and mounted leashes (60–150 cm). There is also a special needle for pushing the fishing line through the long antenna of the bombard.
  4. Carabiners with 3 swivels attached in turn. These swivels are needed because micro-rotators, streamers and flies, the worm on the hook significantly twist the leader . By the way, quickly twisting the hook with the worm during retrieving, as many fishermen have noticed, better attracts fish to the bait, so they try to put the worm on the propeller.
  5. Silicone shock absorber beads that protect the carabiner from float impacts.
  6. The hooks are very sharp and quite thin, because bites are not always obvious and you often have to hope that the fish will hook on its own.
  7. And, of course, a set of bombards.

Equipment equipment

Currently, bombard can be confidently attributed to a separate fishing direction

The tackle has its own characteristics, which the fisherman should pay attention to

Rod for sbirulino

To complete the gear, you will need a long rod of 3-4.5 m. In addition to its large size, it differs from a spinning rod in its softness and lightness. Thanks to the thin and very sensitive tip, you can instantly determine the moment of hooking indecisive or passive prey.

Read the Extreme Conditions Survival Kit

Some fishing enthusiasts cannot get used to a long fishing rod, using the usual spinning stick instead.

Coil

Fishing with sbirulino requires the presence of a reel.
It is required to store a supply of fishing line and ensure long casting. The ideal combination of these two parameters is available in inertia-free models. A high-quality “meat grinder” with a spool size of 2000-3000 with a friction brake will be the most suitable option for sbirulino.

fishing line

The bombard was originally designed for catching wary fish. So, first of all, the fishing line should be invisible in the water

The second criterion that must be taken into account when selecting a material for the base is sufficient tensile strength.

You should look for a combination of these characteristics among monofilament threads. Thanks to the flexible rod, it is possible to dampen the jerks of large fish, which reduces the load on the fishing line. When specifically hunting for pike, you must install a metal leash.

Sinker

When fishing with sbirulino, the sinker is installed only if additional depth of the bait is necessary.

This technique is used when studying such promising sites for large fish as whirlpools and channel edges.

What is needed for bombard fishing

In order to evaluate the capabilities of the equipment, many fishermen already have everything they need.
This is a light rod with a test corresponding to the weight of the float and, best of all, a length of more than 2.4 m. You only need to purchase a few types of bombards and that’s it. What is the cost of the float? Just a few dollars, and it depends on the weight and type of float. Now you can go out onto a lake, a pond with a quiet current, or a mountain river and take your first steps in catching predatory fish with this equipment. After a couple of training sessions and successful fishing, having received a lot of pleasure from this type of fishing, every fisherman will feel the need for the most sophisticated selection of equipment.

What are the advantages of such fishing?

For many fishermen, the use of bombard fishing technology is extremely simple to master, but at the same time a very catchy and effective method. Quite often it is used in modern fishing in order to catch a wide variety of fish, and the undeniable advantage of this method is that even when using the most standard gear, you can send an extremely light bait over a serious distance. It is worth noting that the use of this technology also works quite well in fly fishing.

In appearance, the bombards themselves are practically indistinguishable from each other, but in fact there are several types of them, discussed above. This classification is provided so that the bombard can be used for fishing in any water layer.

If we talk about specific fish, the use of a floating bombard is most often used in the process of catching chub, while fast-sinking ones are used for catching perch. The slow-sinking bombard is more often used in the process of fishing for various predators, and this is especially true for pike. Like a standard jig, if necessary, a bombard can be used to fish along the deepest horizons of a reservoir or to tap on the bottom.

How to properly load a float?

Functions How to choose a float? Overview of float types Required equipment instructions Possible errors

Float fishing is a reliable indicator for anglers who like to keep an eye on their bait at all times. The moment the fish pulls out the bait and swallows it, the float follows it. It's time to catch a fish.

Peculiarities

When fishing using the long-cast method, anglers use a fishing line many times longer than the fishing rod or spinning rod itself. For fishing far from the shore, at great depths, not only a reel with hundreds of meters of fishing line, but also a float is useful.

The float has an arrow shape - this shape expands the aerodynamic capabilities by directing the center of gravity down. When casting such floats, we tighten the fishing line and hooks so that the equipment does not get tangled during strong currents or increased activity of fish on the bait. The top of swimmers, called antennae, are clearly visible from afar due to their length and bright coloring.

Loading the float - or actually balancing the weights so that the float is not carried away far by the current, nailing the line to the shore due to the limited length of the line - is done in two ways.

How to choose a sinker?

There are several weight options.

    Universal, designed for still water (lake, pond, sump of a city reservoir), it provides a very sensitive float and easily responds to the slightest impacts of fishing gear. Not used in coastal shallow waters. The option for shy, wary fish provides a fast-sinking bait for those species that are carried away by contact with the sinker. Oblong date-shaped sinkers do not provide the sharpest deep dive due to the flattened bottom.

All three options are suitable for both in situ mounting (due to proper camber and robust weight) and for floats moving with the current.

For long and ultra-long casts (up to one hundred meters), weights with movable floats are used. But this method is better suited for fishing in the sea than in the river. It is especially unsuitable for foothill river streams, where it has not yet had time to slow down and make a smoother move.

All options with weights are selected only based on the purpose of the application. However, there are factors that significantly affect weight.

Fishing conditions

Unlike still water, the current often carries it far from the casting point (the line where the angler is at the starting point, perpendicular to the current). The weight of the casting increases towards the same current.

The pellets used as a sinker are very close to the bait. By placing them slightly below the sinker, anglers hold the bait in place. The bait will sink closer to the bottom without any problems.

If we catch catfish in a closed lake or reservoir, then the float should not have a greater load than expected. The upper rod of the float in this case has a length of more than 10 cm. The resistance of the fish to catch is also reduced. The unit is immersed in the tank at a low speed when using loads with a minimum mass and at a greater distance from each other.

Type of fish

The load can be arbitrary when, for example, when adipose tissue is starved and shed before March, the fish is undemanding and quickly swallows the bait hook. A float loaded in another way immediately vibrates, which is a signal to the angler that it is jammed.

Catching shy and wary fish tied to bait (when there is a lot of other food in the water, for example in late spring or summer) is carried out with a carefully balanced float. Wary fish species also include carp and bream - both of these species bite bait carelessly. The impact pellets, acting as unloaders, are balanced in such a way that the descending set does not create unnecessary noise that could immediately strike the fish.

Fish species that live closer to the DNA, as well as fish that, due to low atmospheric pressure, are forced to temporarily change the horizon of their habitat, require tying the load to the hooks of the bait.

This method works at shallow depths, where, for example, Tarana remains in Lovko in shallow water. During deep fishing, on the contrary, the weight approaches floating.

Casting distance

On long throws, the float is loaded using two methods. The uniform distribution of pellets makes it possible to catch both in rivers and lakes, in shallow water and at a great distance from the shore. Beware or vice versa "Luz" fish does not play a significant role here.

Fishing technique

Bombard fishing techniques include:

Fishing with a bombard still involves surface fishing mainly in shallow water

  • cast;
  • wiring;
  • bite fixation and hooking;
  • catching fish.

The first and last points from this list are practically no different from fishing with a spinning rod or a match fishing rod, the only difference is that you need to get used to controlling the long leash so that it does not get caught during the swing, as well as casting.

Posting can be performed either continuously or with pauses. In most cases the retrieve pace should be slow to very slow. This is especially true for fishing with natural baits. Sometimes you can add variety to the animation of the bait with light jerks and short pulls.

The angler notices the bite in the same way as spinning fishing, tactilely through the rod or by the movement of the fishing line. The hook should be energetic, but not too strong and wide.
