Not many fishermen in our country know about this equipment yet. Bombard fishing is well developed in some European countries, especially in Italy, where this method was invented several years ago, in Spain and France.
This gear is based on a special float, “bombarda” or, as it is often called in its homeland, “sbirulino” . A fisherman who has learned to use it well has the opportunity to fish using light baits over considerable distances.
Varieties of bombard
Almost always, fishing with a bombard is done using spinning tackle . Therefore, they are often called spinning floats. This fishing method was specially designed for long-distance casting of light baits weighing from 1 to 5 grams , and full-fledged work with them.
Like all ordinary floats, bombards have different buoyancy and differ in the degree of loading, but differ from them in their design. They combine the main advantages of floats and sinkers, from which fishing with sbirulino acquires new properties and possibilities.
Depending on their quality parameters, they are classified according to the degree of buoyancy and divided into types of loading. According to the degree of buoyancy they are divided into:
- Floating. They are always on the surface of the water.
- Slowly sinking (neutral). Such models are capable of diving to a certain depth and remaining there.
- Drowning. Fishing with sbirulino of this type is aimed at bottom-dwelling fish species.
Depending on the loading method, they are divided into two types:
- Bombard with an internal cavity designed to be filled with water. Such models have a variable degree of loading, since the angler himself regulates the amount of water.
- With a built-in weight , usually lead, but there are options with a movable brass weight in the form of a cylinder, which changes the quality of the sbirulino. Such models have a constant load value.
Due to their wide variety, fishing with a bombard can be carried out with a variety of equipment. Depending on where and what kind of fish the angler is going for, he can easily choose the method of fishing with a bombard.
Bombard - device and types
Bombarda or sbirulino is a special float that complements spinning tackle. It has its own weight and is used for casting light baits.
Thanks to the bombard, the smallest artificial flies, silicone fish, wobblers and spinners fly quite far. In addition, with the help of such a float you can bait fish in any water horizon.
Bombards differ by type of load and buoyancy.
Types of loading:
- Sbirulino with internal cavity . The floats are filled with water, so the fisherman himself can regulate the loading of the bombard.
- Float with built-in weight . Lead is most often used to make loads. The weight of such a bombard remains constant.
Differences between bombards by type of buoyancy:
- slowly sinking floats are able to hover in a certain layer of water;
- sinking models immediately sink to the bottom;
- floating floats do not sink in water.
With sinking models it is easy to lure fish at the bottom of the river. Floating floats are used to attract fish at the very surface of the reservoir.
Recommended gear assembly option
Today, fishing with a bombard, thanks to the special properties of this float, is quite clearly distinguished from other types of fishing. To achieve the desired efficiency, fishing with spirulino (bombard) should be carried out with specially selected gear, which includes:
- rod;
- coil;
- selected float;
- fishing line, leash, hooks and bait.
Carbines and swivels are selected in combination with other elements.
The most suitable rod for any method of bombard fishing is an ordinary spinning rod with a sensitive tip . Its length must be selected depending on the free space around and fishing conditions. Typically, the length of the form is determined in the range from 2.8 to 4 meters . It is better to take a parabolic or medium-fast tuning.
The test parameters must correspond to the weight of the equipment along with the bait, usually 15 - 45 grams , it is in this range that 90% of these equipment are found. Fishing on sbirulino with such a fishing rod will bring results the fastest.
It is clear that bombard, fishing for which is carried out using a spinning rod, requires the use of a suitable reel in equipping the tackle. For this fishing method, the best option is a high-quality spinning reel with a size of 1500 to 3000 .
Experienced fishermen believe that the bombard, fishing for which has already become commonplace for them, should only be water-filled. As evidence of the correctness of their opinion, they give the following arguments:
- change the weight of this float model without a long procedure for re-equipping the gear. It is enough to add or reduce the amount of water in its cavity in order to increase or decrease its weight.
- This float is universal . By adjusting the amount of water in it, you can get a floating or gradually sinking float.
For those fishermen for whom the bombard and the methods of fishing with it are still new, it is better for now to use models with a constant weight. They are easier to master the technique of fishing with this equipment and will allow you to quickly understand what fishing with a bombard is.
Braided cord is usually used as the main fishing line , and the remaining parts of the gear are selected in accordance with the already selected elements, taking into account what type of fish you are going to hunt. Fishing with a bombard, the equipment for which is selected in accordance with all recommendations, is rarely ineffective.
Catching bleak with a bombard
The Italian method of catching bleak is gradually taking root in our country. Sbirulino or bombard allows you to cast the lightest baits far. And this is very important when bleak feeds away from the shore.
- The tackle is equipped with a special rod 3.5-4.5 m long. Thanks to the softness of the blank, a smooth and long-distance casting of the equipment is obtained.
- You can install a regular spinning grinder with a 2000-3000 spool on the fishing rod.
- The main fishing line is monofilament with a diameter of 0.14-0.16 mm.
- The leash is made of nylon fiber with a thickness of 0.10-0.12 mm. A hook No. 14-16 is attached to it.
- Depending on which layer the bleak is in, a special sbirulino float is selected. It can be floating or sinking. Some transparent models are filled with water, which allows you to make adjustments right on the pond.

Installation of sbirulino
There are several options for the correct installation of such floats. Each of them takes into account their main function - they, due to their weight, should help to cast a light bait long-distance and then, due to the nature of their buoyancy, ensure fishing in different water layers.
Here is the classic installation method:
- A complete reel is installed on the rod. As a rule, with this fishing method, there must be at least 100 meters of fishing line on the reel.
- Having threaded the fishing line through all the rings, you need to attach a bombard to it, and then install a rubber shock absorber, which can be used as a piece of rubber. It is needed to soften the impact of heavy sbirulino on the lower parts of the equipment when casting.
- We attach a swivel to the end of the fishing line, and a leash to it. The leash is taken, as a rule, thinner than the main cord, but if you plan to catch pike, you need to take a tungsten leash.
- You need to attach a hook to the leash through a carabiner. If artificial bait is used, you need to attach an already equipped hook.
With this method of equipment, the bombard will always be higher than the rest of the equipment, but it can be secured in another way. Some anglers sometimes prefer an installation in which they fish on a bombard, the equipment of which is located above it.
This is not so difficult - the float is fixed motionless at the very end of the main line, and the leash with the hook is fixed above. So, in particular, fishing with a bombard can take place in the current, when the equipped hook, for one reason or another, needs to be floated down the river for some time.
Features of fishing using a bombard
In Italy and some other European countries, sbirulino fishing ranks first in popularity ratings . Local fishermen know very well how to catch this or that type of fish with a bombard using various baits and fishing methods.
This gear is primarily aimed at fishing from the shore in shallow areas of the reservoir, where aquatic vegetation and submerged snags are present. The correct technique for retrieving is crucial when fishing with this gear. It is recommended to bait using one of the following methods:
- Smooth winding of the fishing line with minor twitching. The frequency and amplitude of twitching must be determined experimentally;
- smooth slow retrieve, in which the bait should work independently;
- amplitude jerks with the end of the rod followed by reeling.
Each of these methods is capable of attracting one or another predator living in a reservoir. It is recommended to cast with the required amplitude; if conditions allow, over the head.
It is important to remember that if fishing is done using a floating bombard, then the tip of the rod when fishing should be kept higher above the water, and when fishing with sinking models - as close to its surface as possible.

A few simple tips for those who start fishing with Bombarda
Keep in mind that this same Bombarda “sausages” incredibly on a spinning rod when moving from place to place. Spinners quickly get used to the fact that they have one bait, they hook it into a ring or hold it with the same hand - and there are no problems. The massive Bombarda, when the bait accompanying it is hooked on the ring, tends to swing and hit the form painfully.
Another tip is not to use fasteners. They are convenient, of course, but they clearly interfere with tiny fly baits. And you can’t attach an artificial “grasshopper” to a fastener, even a small one. There's only one thing left to do - tie it down.
Another tip is to frequently inspect the leash for any knots that may form during casting. Especially often they manage to reproduce when fishing with a “spinner”: the line gets twisted - and it becomes easier for it to create this unpleasant incident. There are still such strong but stupid fish that stupidly test your gear for strength. As if on purpose.
Well, perhaps one more important note. When casting long distances using the Bombarda, I advise you to slightly hold the line before splashing down. The leash straightens out more easily in the air than in the water. If this is not done, overlaps will occur more often, especially with the “spinner”. This technique is used by fly fishermen, which is what I am trying to bring to the attention of spinning anglers.
I hope that my modest experience of fishing at the intersection of three disciplines (Bombarda, fly fishing and “cockroaches”) will be of interest to someone and, perhaps, will force someone to look differently or more closely at fishing of this kind.
Bombarda rod
A regular spinning rod is not suitable for this type of fishing, since its length will cause a lot of inconvenience when casting and retrieving. When choosing a fishing rod, you need to focus on a length over 3 m . In this case, in order to save money, a mast or feeder rod, or a Bolognese fishing rod is suitable.
The question arises, why the long rod?
To effectively fish with a bombard, you need to use a leash of at least 1.5 m long. Otherwise, the fish may be afraid of the sbirulino.
This rule is slightly leveled out during deep fishing , when the bait and sbirulino are under water. In such cases, the leash can be half as long and the rod itself, too. Well, if your finances allow it, then you can buy a special rod for bombarda and not fool yourself.
I can’t single out any special suggestions regarding the choice of reel The main thing is that it is reliable, and the diameter of the fishing line should not exceed Ø0.2 in order to reduce resistance in the water.
Bombard float (sbirulino)
Until recently, fishermen used an egg-shaped float, but now the bombard has replaced it because it has better aerodynamic ability. When using a bombard, the fisherman has an excellent opportunity to responsively control the flies.
Types of bombard: floating, slow-sinking and fast-sinking. The choice of one of the three types depends on the layer of water in which you are going to fish.
- Floating bombard - used for surface fishing for sabrefish, asp or roach.
- Slow-sinking - used to search for fish in the middle layers of water.
- A fast -sinking one is needed for catching fish near the bottom. For example: perch or pike perch.
Wiring when fishing with a bombard
After casting a bombard, a lot depends on the wiring and there are several styles of wiring:
- Very slow uniform wiring.
- Retrieving with the tip of the rod moving 2-3 meters, then returning to the starting point, reeling in with a reel, the bait is in place at this time.
- Slow wiring with twitching.
The frequency and amplitude of twitching must be obtained in practice while fishing. An important parameter is the game of the bait. If the twister you are using does not play with its tail when moving slowly, increase the speed, or make the tail lighter and wriggling.
Types of bombards:
- floating,
- slowly sinking
- fast-sinking.
Leash for bombard
The length of the leash should be at least 1.5 m, and preferably 3 m. Only when fishing at depth can it be longer than 0.5 m, since the fish are not afraid of the bombard.
You can use any line on the leader, but fluorocarbon is best because it is invisible to fish in the water. Although, for better efficiency, undergrowth is used as in fly fishing equipment.
The leash is attached to the main fishing line using a swivel. It must be triple to avoid twisting of the leash.
Rigging a bombard Rigging a sbirulino is not very difficult, but there are some minor nuances. Firstly, the bombard is attached to the bait with its thickening. A bead is placed between the bombard and the swivel so that when casting the bombard does not break your knot. We also put a lock between the rod and the bombard so that when biting the line does not escape through the bombard.
And now I propose to collect all the knowledge together and watch a short video clip to facilitate the perception of the material read above.
How to fish with a bombard
Let's start with the casting problem . Since the length of the leash is quite long, it’s enough to just hook something extra on the fly and you won’t see a catch. That is why, when choosing a bombard casting technique , I advise you to combine the fly fishing technique of casting over the head and the mast casting technique.
Before the bombard lands on the water, you need to slow down the line so that the leash opens. Otherwise, he may simply get confused.
“Stop and go” technique , which in turn emits a drowning insect. Also read the article about how to catch sabrefish using a bombard.

Bombarda baits
You can fish with artificial and natural baits. Single hooks are used for fishing with bloodworms, larvae and dough. When fishing with sbirulino, alternative baits and baits :
- twisters;
- jigs;
- vibrators;
- dry flies;
- rotators.
Using different types of bait gives you the advantage of fishing in all weather conditions and in difficult fishing areas.
Bombard flies For example, saberfish and asp feed on fry and insects. This means that you need to choose a fly similar to a mosquito or a fry. In this case, it is recommended to use sinking flies or a slow-sinking bombard.
In some cases, you can use many leaders with hooks and attachments extending from the main line. This will increase the chance of a bite.
Bombard fishing methods
Bombarda (sbirulino) is a special float for spinning fishing, which has its own weight and is intended only for loading your light equipment equipped with flies, light twisters, wobblers or animal and vegetable baits - worms, maggots, bloodworms, etc.
Thanks to the bombard, you can throw a bait weighing less than a gram over a hundred meters and carry it near the surface of the water, in the thickness or even along the bottom.
First of all, bombarding still implies surface fishing and you can look for fish in shallow water, or you can catch exclusively riding fish.
In addition, fishing with a bombard allows you to fish regardless of the nature of the reservoir and the bottom topography.
It does not depend on what fish is currently active, at what depth, what living creatures and what insects it is currently feeding on, as it allows you to quickly switch from one fishing object to another.
We advise everyone who has not yet fished with a bombard to try this type of fishing, because it is very catchy and easy to use. After all, with the help of this simple tackle it is possible to cast bait over a long distance.
This is the difference from fly fishing gear, which requires a very long mastery, sometimes even years, in order to correctly cast a small bait over such a distance. In addition, it is possible to cast it from awkward positions, from behind bushes and trees, in order to catch cautious fish.
And although when casting and falling into the water, the bombard’s float creates more noise than when casting with fly fishing, the increase in the fished area of the reservoir makes up for this drawback, which was not available for fly fishing.
Lures
When fishing with a bombard, an angler can use a variety of types of bait. An angler can attach a wide variety of natural baits to a hook:
- worm;
- maggot;
- dough;
- bloodworm;
- corn;
Lures for fishing with bombard:
- flies;
- small twisters,
- vibrotails,
- foam fish;
- foam balls;
- wobblers (usually surface);
- almost any animal and plant attachments.
Anglers successfully catch predators, as well as fish that can be considered predatory using small spoons, jig baits and even small wobblers.
You can fish with a bombard tackle :
- pike;
- perch;
- ide;
- chub.

Bombard tackle, or sbirulino
This tackle is well known to Volga fishermen, because it was born there - in the Middle Volga. Many people are surprised by the new names of this tackle - bombarda, sbirulino and others, while for them, since childhood, it has always been bubble fishing.
Instead of a bubble filled with water to give the gear the required depth, and cambrics with hooks on leashes as bait, fishermen are now using a more civilized approach.
This is a float surrounded in a certain way, and all the variety of modern artificial baits from streamers and flies, to wobblers and spinners.
A bombard float, similar to a glass bubble, is most often made of transparent plastic for low visibility in the water. And for fishing in the dark, the bombard can be luminescent (glows in the dark).
Some bombard floats have an adjustable weight system. Depending on the weight of the load and the location of the sinkers in the float (center of gravity), the equipment may have different properties that affect the nature of the wiring. The most common types of bombard rigs are shown in the pictures and photos.
The wiring of the bombard depends on the type of installation and many other factors, but this is another topic beyond the scope of this review.
Perch, sabrefish, chub, ide and asp are caught using a bombard. Other fish are often included in the bycatch.
Additional video on the topic:
Bombard or sbirulino float, device, types, differences
Sbirulino differ in buoyancy.
There are three main types of buoyancy:
- sinking in water.
- Bottom floats (sinking bombards that sink to the bottom)
- Floats that sink slowly in water and can also remain in one layer of water.
Sbirulino can also be distinguished by the type of its sinker:
- Bombard with a built-in sinker. Often lead is taken during loading; the weight of the float is usually constant.
- A float with a hollow space inside. Its main difference from a bombard with a built-in sinker, and its advantage is that the hollow space is filled with water, the fisherman himself can control the weight of the sinker.
