How to catch trout with a bombard?

What is the gear for trout fishing with a bombard?

Rigging a bombard for trout involves the use of a special float with a spindle-shaped body. Inside the float there is a hollow hole through which the fishing line is threaded. The main advantage of using a bombard is the ability to fish at a great distance from the shore using light artificial baits.

The basis of the trout bombard fishing tackle is transparent plastic, which is practically invisible in the water and does not scare away prey. Equipping bombards made of balsa is less common, since the cost of the design is much higher. The internal elements of the equipment are also made of polymer materials.

The use of a special float with a spindle-shaped body involves rigging a bombard for trout

The tackle can be fished using either sinking or floating floats. If the design uses a deepening bait, it is additionally loaded by adding lead or stainless steel weights inside the float. Floating types of baits are used in reservoirs where the predator is located at the surface of the water.

The heavy weight of the gear is designed for long casting distances, but the specific characteristics of the equipment are very different and depend on the habitat of the fish. It is first important to study the casting range of the equipment, the bait used and the characteristics of the elements of the equipment.

In addition to the float, the tackle uses:

  • rod Today, specialized spinning rods have been developed for catching trout with a bombard, and in general for using sbirulino equipment to catch various types of fish. Such fishing rods are available in lengths of 3-5 m, have a medium action and are made of lightweight materials. In the absence of a specialized fishing rod, a regular spinning rod 2.7 m long, with a slow or medium action, is often used. Regarding the test, it is preferable to take fishing rods for fishing with baits from 30 g;
  • coil. The main requirements for a reel are: the ability to lay the line evenly, the ease of making long casts and an accurate drag that can dampen jerks of the prey. The inertia-free option is more often used, since multipliers are not needed here. It is better to choose a low-profile spool with a reduction ratio of 5.5:1 or more;
  • fishing line Monofilament now comes in handy, since there are no benefits from using braid. If there are particularly cautious fish in the pond, it makes sense to install fluorocarbon, which is inconspicuous in the water. Due to the increased rigidity of fluorocarbon, there is a high probability of the formation of beards and loops;
  • driving material. Its role is often performed by the same monofilament, with the possibility of replacing it with fluorocarbon fishing line, but with a smaller diameter. The length of the leash for bottom fishing is 10-30 cm, and for surface fishing it is better to increase the length, sometimes reaching 2 m. The specific dimensions depend on the presence and strength of the current in the reservoir;

Sbirulino: catchable tackle

Initially, it was probably a float that helped deliver light bait to the maximum distance. Unlike floats for “long casting”, sbirulino or bombard do not function as a bite alarm.

In the modern interpretation, sbirulino includes not only classic bombards, but also special trout trematrotes and “trota stick”.

The essence of the gear is simple and clear. Above the bait on the main line there is a sliding float-sbirulino with the required mass and buoyancy.

The line passes freely through the tube, and the fish bite and the action of the bait are transmitted directly to the tip of the rod.

Working condition sbirulino. Photo: Andrey Yanshevsky.

From below, the sliding of the sbirulin along the fishing line towards the bait is limited by a stopper, below which there is a leash.

The classic version of the stopper is a triple swivel. In my opinion, such execution is not at all necessary. Swivels are used when baits are used that actually spin the line - spinners or asymmetrical pieces of edible trout paste. I should note that in the case of fast retrieving, swivels do not always help - you have to increase the diameter and rigidity of the leash line.

In the case of using wobblers and oscillators, the need for a swivel disappears and, for example, a winding ring or clasp can be used as a stopper.

The length of the leash depends on several factors, but usually it is within 1-2 m.

It is very convenient to be able to quickly change the length of the leash. This can be done by using a piece of silicone tube with a match or a wooden toothpick as a stopper.

If braid is used as the main fishing line, then you should not get carried away with this technique, since after a while, tangles may begin at the junction of the leash with the main fishing line. However, this is not critical, since it is more important to be able to quickly change the length of the leash when changing bait.

Read Techniques for catching sabrefish and preparing gear

The specific design of gear for catching lake trout is as follows. The rod is 13 or 14 feet long, that is, 3.96 or 4.27 m.

Observations on reservoirs show that the vast majority of fishermen are trying to adapt ordinary spinning rods for the gear under discussion - this is not correct, for at least two reasons.

In cases where the fish bites in the surface layers of water, a meter long leash may be sufficient, but in autumn and spring, when the fish stays in the lower bottom layers of water and if a floating Sbirulino model is used, the length of the spinning rod is clearly not enough, since the length of the leash can be 2.5 m.

The second reason is that on a spinning rod it is not entirely easy to combine the required power for equipment weighing 15-40 g with the required sensitivity. At the same time, the rod should effectively dampen the jerks of strong trout on thin fishing line. With fish other than trout, it is much easier because you can use coarser equipment.

The choice of the main fishing line, in my opinion, is also not critical, since the casting range can always be increased by taking another bombard. I use 7-11lb braid to increase sensitivity. For the leash I use monofilament with a diameter of 0.18-0.20 mm or a very high-quality 0.148 mm.

If the water is very clear, then only in this case, and even then not always, does it make sense to use the highest quality fluorocarbon.

With fishing line for leashes, everything is not so clear. I don’t always strive for acceptable thin lines and I’ll explain why. A thin line does not interfere with the play of a small wobbler, but in the case of an oscillator, it may happen that the falling speed becomes too high.

The spinner will sink quickly and fall off poorly; you will have to increase the speed of the retrieve, and this, in turn, may result in the cessation of biting. Therefore, I choose relatively thick fishing lines with good, but not maximum, strength characteristics. But if you need a thin leash for a wobbler or a one and a half to two inch vibrating tail, then you can’t do without elite sports leash lines.

I note that the vast majority of Moscow fishermen use floating models with a dead weight of 15-25 g. Many do not even suspect that there are sinking and slow-sinking models, close to suspenders.

What bait should I use to catch trout using a bombard?

Lures, as well as fishing methods, vary greatly in different bodies of water and depending on the preferences of the fisherman himself. Artificial baits are mainly used, giving the fisherman excitement while catching and landing fish. Natural baits are also catchy, but do not add as much emotion to fishing as wobblers for trout.

Among the common baits:

  • rotating spoon for trout;
  • streamers;
  • nymphs;
  • small wobblers imitating flies;
  • flies;
  • topwaters;
  • silicone nozzles.

Interesting! Today, trout fishing with paste is popular, because ordinary float rods can be used as tackle. The popularity is due to the high catchability of the bait. With the help of a special paste, fishing with sbirulino and feeder is possible. There are 2 types of pastes: sinking (used for bottom equipment) and floating (lingers in the water column, slowly sinking to the bottom).

All baits are used of the ultralight type, and the bombard already ensures that the gear is delivered to a sufficient distance for fishing and at a suitable depth.

Artificial baits are primarily used for trout fishing.

Natural

Baits - such as maggots, mealworms, caterpillars, all types of worms, etc. the living creatures are attached to a single hook in a special way (as indicated in Figure 3) so that when retrieved, the mass of water flowing around them gives them a rotational movement, reminiscent of the propeller of a motor boat. If desired, you can combine different larvae on one hook and experiment with the angle of bend on the hook, which affects the speed of rotation. By the way, if you have the opportunity, be sure to try placing the fry on the hook (by the head through both lips or bend the fry on the hook like a tackle). Rare trout will refuse such a treat if you give the bait the uncertain movements of a sick fish.

Plastic imitations of larvae, worms, fry and other natural food

In my opinion, it may be an expensive, but quite effective alternative. They stay on the hook longer and have a special smell that stimulates the fish’s appetite. In our conditions, I would still classify them as a type of bait “just in case of fire”, i.e. when there is no bite on a live bait or it is simply not at hand. The assortment includes artificial maggots “POWER WIGGLER” from BERKLEY” (Fig. 4a) and artificial worms “MEGAWURMER-DOUBLE FISH” from Cormoran (Fig. 46).

A separate group of baits consists of microscopic (1.5-3 cm) versions of “twisters”, vibrotail fish, etc., known to spinning anglers. As with artificial worms, I prefer to use scent baits such as the MICRO POWER GRUB Twisters from BERKLEY. In my opinion, two subtleties should be mentioned. First, the champion in catchability is the spade-shaped tail from a 10-centimeter vibrator fish attached to a single hook. The second (visible in Fig. 5) is a small improvement - a thin copper wire attached to the ring of the hook to secure the plastic bait to its shank.

Floating dough and other types of attachments not normally used in motion

Floating dough (BIODEGRADABLE TROUT BAIT BERKLEY), artificial caviar and special viscous balls - boilies (NATCHERY FORMULA POWER NIBBLES from BERKLEY) (Fig. 6) are very popular in Europe, but I have never managed to catch anything with these baits using a bombard. I know for sure about the successful use of these baits when fishing for trout in ponds using a bombard, but today I can personally only confirm the successful use of these baits when fishing with a float, bottom and in winter from ice.

Fly fishing flies, nymphs, streamers

The entire known range of fly fishing arsenal is used.

Subtleties: 1. Using a leash made of fluorocarbon fishing line (the best in the world today, “Grand Max” from RIVERGE) invisible to the fish. In addition to the property of being invisible to fish, this fishing line, unlike nylon, quickly sinks in the water, and this property is simply irreplaceable when fishing with a dry fly - the leash bends under its own weight (it is located below the surface of the water and therefore, being invisible, does not in itself create water unmasking trace from surface tension (Fig. 7)

Fly fishers, take note! This advice applies primarily to you!!!

2. When fishing with an artificial fly (both using a bombard and classic fly fishing), I very widely use all sorts of smells and bite activators. Their use has long been nothing new for spinners with their spinners and wobblers, so during my experiments I decided that the smell of food would not hurt the same fly fishing fly. My first experience exceeded all my wildest expectations, but it would be interesting to conduct nationwide tests of this idea for the purity of the experiment. Fly fishers! What do you think about it?

Place and time for trout fishing with a bombard

Trout is a freshwater salmon, further differentiated into:

  • lake trout. It lives in lakes Ladoga and Onega, as well as in reservoirs of the Caucasus and Karelia. Its diet includes small fish, larvae and insects themselves;
  • brook trout. Often found in cold and fast river streams in Russia, Crimea, and the Caucasus. In the summer, small representatives of the species live in areas with fast flows of water, hiding behind stones, trunks of fallen trees, supports of hydraulic structures, etc. The predator prefers to be in places where there is a difference in depth and the transition of fast flows to slow ones or vice versa.

Both types of fish prefer to live at depth in spring. After winter, trout are still weak; they do not stand in the rapids, but go to relatively calm places on rivers and lakes. Similar behavior is observed in autumn fish. During spring fishing, it is better to throw gear into wintering pits and other areas where fish spend the winter: riffles, areas with low-intensity currents and an abundance of food.

How to catch trout with a bombard

Today, a popular type of fishing in many paid ponds and quarries is trout fishing with a bombard. This very delicate and difficult type of fishing allows you to hunt for this predator at medium and long distances, using ultra-light baits, which explains the effectiveness of this gear.

A bombard is a specialized spindle-shaped float made primarily of transparent plastic. Its main purpose is to facilitate casting lightweight ultralight baits over long distances.

Bombarda, also called sbirulino, varies in weight, which is selected based on fishing conditions, artificial baits used and fishing distance. Less commonly, this equipment is used with natural baits and baits.

Gear used

Suitable tackle must be used to catch trout using a bombard. The main focus should be on the rod and reel. The productivity of fishing and the pleasure of the fishing process itself depend on their correct choice.

Today, specialized fishing rods are produced for fishing with sbirulino. However, many domestic fishermen cannot always afford to buy a separate “rod” for this type of fishing. Therefore, we list the basic requirements that a spinning rod for hunting with a bombard must meet:

  1. Length from 2.70 meters to cast the equipment far and have increased maneuverability when controlling it.
  2. Build medium or slow. Increases the range of the tackle, dampens fish jerks well, and allows you to perform soft, smooth bait animation techniques.
  3. Test within 5–25 grams. Fishing rods that are too light are not suitable due to the weight of the equipment; heavy ones, on the contrary, excessively coarse the tackle.
  4. Minimum possible weight, since a heavy rod will quickly tire you.

The coil used is inertialess. It must correspond to the chosen “stick”, be in harmony with it, and not have an imbalance. Pay attention to the following characteristics of the model:

  1. Light, silent running, no parasitic beats or backlash.
  2. Low profile spool for use with thin lines and cords.
  3. Smooth laying of the line on the spool, without dips or humps.
  4. Fine-tuning of the friction mechanism to prevent breakage of thin equipment when fishing for trout.

For hunting this predator, the optimal choice would be a high-speed spinning reel with a size of about 2000 according to the Daiwa or Shimano classification. Power models are not used in this fishing direction.

For trout fishing with sbirulino, you can use both monofilament and braided fishing line. Monofilament has the following advantages:

  • Invisibility in water, does not alarm fish.
  • Slippery and smooth structure that promotes casting distance.
  • Good shock absorption to absorb trout jerks.

Braid increases the sensitivity of the rig, has greater strength and allows for more reliable hooking, thanks to its almost zero elongation.

Installation of gear. Video instruction

Today, the bombard has developed as an independent tackle and requires certain equipment. To assemble it you need the following fishing elements:

  • rod;
  • fishing line;
  • leash;
  • coil;
  • float;
  • bait;
  • hooks

Rod.

Fishing with a bombard is close to spinning fishing, so an ordinary spinning rod is suitable for fishing with this equipment.

On medium and small rivers it is best to use rods 2.5 to 3 meters long. Their test must correspond to the weight of the sbirulino being thrown.

For fishing in large bodies of water, you will need a spinning rod at least 3.3 meters long. However, if the banks of the river are heavily overgrown, then casting with such a rod will be quite difficult, since this requires a lot of free space. In addition, it is worth considering that fly spinning rods most often have modest tests

Read What kind of cake is used for fishing and how to make it yourself

Therefore, when choosing them, you should pay special attention to this indicator.

Fishing line.

If fishing is carried out at a short distance with light bombards, then monofilament can be used as the main one, since its stretchability is not particularly noticeable. When fishing at a sufficiently large distance from the shore with heavy floats, it is recommended to use a braided line.

Leash.

The leash should be chosen from monofilament or fluorocarbon, which is less prone to overlap.

To catch “toothless” fish, leashes 1.5–2 meters long and 0.1–0.12 millimeters thick are used. To catch a pike, you need to choose a metal leash, the length of which will be from 7 to 15 centimeters.

Coil.

For this type of fishing no special reel is required. You can choose a regular inertia-free one, with a size from 2500 to 3500.

It should be noted that when fishing with sbirulino, it is better not to tighten the friction brake too much. A tightened clutch when attacked by a fish can cause the loss of not only the bait, but also the trophy.

Bombard.

Many experienced fishermen advise using water-filled floats. There are two reasons for this:

  1. If you pour a little water into the bombard, it will float. By filling it completely, you can get a sinking float.
  2. By changing the amount of water in sbirulino, you can increase or decrease its weight without tying up the tackle.

Sinking bombards are most often used when fishing with small spinners and wobblers. For the wire near the bottom of the streamer or fly, it is advisable to use a “Tyrolean stick”.

Hooks.

Their size should be chosen in accordance with the size of the bait and the intended catch. If live bait is used, the hooks should have a small barb, a wide hook and a long shank.

Swivel.

This element of equipment is necessary to ensure that the fishing line used for fishing does not twist. For this purpose, use a triple swivel size No. 14–20. If this is not available, then using fasteners you can connect two or three swivels.

Once all the fishing elements are prepared, you can begin installing the gear.

Classic bombard montage

Using video clips on the Internet, you can see several options for installing bombard equipment. But most often the classic version is used.

Installation of sbirulino:

  1. A reel is installed on the spinning rod, on which about one hundred meters of the main fishing line is wound.
  2. A bombard is attached to the end of the main line.
  3. After this, a rubber stopper and swivel are installed. A rubber stopper is necessary so that the float does not break the assembly when casting.
  4. A leash is attached to the second eye of the swivel, on the end of which a hook for natural bait or artificial bait is mounted.

Basic lures for bombarda

When fishing with sbirulino, you can use both live and artificial baits.

The following can be used as natural baits:

  • fry;
  • leeches;
  • various insects;
  • insect larvae;
  • worms

Suitable artificial baits include:

  • flies;
  • small wobblers;
  • foam balls;
  • spinners;
  • small silicone fish.

Making a bombard with your own hands

Experienced fishermen quite often make sbirulino on their own. There are many options for homemade floats:

  1. Using a knife, the float is cut out of foam plastic. Then it is rubbed with sandpaper and painted in a dark color with a marker.
  2. A bombard can be made from any large float, equipped with lead pellets or a sinker.
  3. A very convenient float is made from a disposable medical syringe, in which a small hole is made for attaching the fishing line. By filling the syringe with water, you can get a sinking bombard.

Equipment Features

The Sbirulino rig itself for trout hunting looks like this:

  1. A bombard is placed on the main line, then a silicone or plastic ball is put on it, protecting the integrity of the unit when it collides with the float during retrieving and casting.
  2. A swivel is fixed at the free end of the fishing line to prevent it from twisting when using spinners and other lures that twist the cord.
  3. A leash made of thin monofilament thread or fluorocarbon is tied to the swivel. Its length can range from 30 cm to 2 meters and depends on the fishing conditions, the mood of the trout and the baits used.
  4. We knit a fastener to the leash to attach the bait or fix it directly.

The assembled equipment is ready for use.

Trout lures

Trout can be caught using sbirulino with a wide variety of artificial and natural baits. The most exciting and dynamic fishing is achieved using ultra-light ultralight models:

  1. In the upper layers of water, it is advisable to use fly fishing flies, nymphs, small streamers, fly wobblers and topwaters.
  2. In the water column, micro-oscillators, spinners and UL wobblers are most often used.
  3. At the bottom, with the help of sbirulino, you can use silicone baits, micro-oscillators, rotating spinners and wobblers.

Depending on the time of year, light and weather factors, different colors of baits may show the best results. In turbid waters, preference should be given to bright and fluorescent colors. It is more advisable to use natural tones in transparent ones. On many fishing grounds, a special love of trout for pink baits has been noticed.

Fishing tactics

Trout is a cautious fish, the fishing of which must be approached consciously, even when fishing in cultivated reservoirs:

  • Initially, you need to determine the distance from the shore where the trout feeds.
  • Based on this, we select the weight of sbirulino.
  • Then we determine the horizon in which the predator stands. This is an important point that directly affects the choice of a specific bait and the degree of buoyancy of the bombard.
  • Having decided on the characteristics of the equipment, we assemble it, and you can start fishing.

The wiring of the equipment can be varied. In most cases, a banal uniform feed is used. Depending on the mood of the trout, the speed of reeling in the fishing line varies. Dotted animation shows good results, especially for a passive predator, which consists of periodically stopping the bait.

Where and how to catch trout with a bombard

Fishing for trout using a bombard requires a thorough study of the habitats of this predator at different times of the year, the nature of its behavior, and the ability to use the float itself.

Fish habitats

Trout is the name given to various freshwater species of salmon. Depending on the habitat, trout can be:

  • lacustrine, which is found in Lakes Onega and Ladoga, in fresh water bodies of Karelia, the Kola Peninsula, the mountains of the Caucasus and Transcaucasia. It feeds on small fish, insects, and their larvae;
  • brook (pied) lives in fast cold-water rivers of Russia, Karelia, the Kola Peninsula, Crimea, and the Caucasus. It is distinguished from other trout species by its red and orange spots with a light rim.

Tackle for trout fishing with bombard

If you plan to fish for trout using a bombard, the tackle should be specially designed for it.

There are special fishing rods that are designed for fishing with sbirulino. They are expensive. Therefore, many fishermen select the most suitable devices from those regularly used.

Equipment elements

For salmon fishing, there is proven trout equipment. The bombardment that attracts trout starts with the rod and ends with the hook.

Spinning must meet the following requirements:

  • rod length - at least 2.7 m for long casting and increased maneuverability when controlling equipment;
  • medium or slow action increases range. It dampens jerks and ensures soft and smooth animation;
  • test - from 5 to 25 g;
  • the weight should be as low as possible so as not to overwork the fisherman during a long fight with the prey.

The rod is equipped with a spinning reel, trying to choose a harmonious product. It must have the following characteristics:

  • ease of movement, noiselessness. No backlash or beating;
  • spool for thin fishing line (cord). With even laying, without humps or dips;
  • fine-tuning the friction mechanism of the reel to prevent breakage.

Mounting power models on spinning rods is not used for this type of fishing.

Attach elements of equipment and bait for fishing on monofilament or braided fishing line. At the same time, the predominance of the advantages of monofilament is noted:

  • it is not visible in the water. Doesn't scare fish;
  • thanks to the smooth, slippery structure, a high casting range is ensured;
  • has sufficient shock absorption to effectively dampen the jerks of the predator.

The braided type is favored by its strength, increased sensitivity and reliability of hooks due to its low level of elongation.

A leash with a length of 10 cm (bottom fishing) and up to 2 m (fishing in the upper layers) is made from a thinner thread.

To prevent the line from twisting, a special carabiner - a swivel - is attached to the bombard. Most often there are three of them.

To protect the rest of the equipment from impacts from sbirulino, rubber balls are used for shock absorption.

Fishing rod for trout using a bombard.

Having chosen the type of bombard that suits the expected fishing conditions, you need to choose a suitable fishing rod. The best rod for trout fishing is a rod that is comfortable for casting and has a length of three to five meters. The material of the rod does not radically affect the result and can be chosen by the fisherman based on his financial capabilities. The fishing line is selected taking into account the characteristics of the reservoir. In practice, the best results are achieved when using high-strength fluorocarbon line or braided cord. A one and a half meter leash is made from high quality fishing line with a thickness of 0.2 millimeters. When choosing a hook, it is better to give preference to those made of thin wire and durable products from well-known brands. Such hooks bite into the fish more easily and can withstand its resistance and weight perfectly. Several nuances of trout spinning fishing deserve attention. The first nuance. To prevent the line from twisting during casting, swivels are used. The second nuance. When throwing the tackle, it must be stopped abruptly a second before it hits the water using a reel stopper. Thanks to the use of this technique, the tackle is pulled into one line and the leash does not get tangled.

The advantages of fishing with a bombard

There are a number of advantages of fishing with sbirulino:

  • the technique and methods of fishing with a bombard are easily learned, which makes it in demand for novice fishermen;
  • installing an unusual float and bait will not take much time, and catchy fishing is definitely expected;
  • the versatility of the tackle allows you to catch any fish even without summer or winter bait (carp, carp, pike perch, pike, perch);
  • since the bombard provides additional load, even when using standard gear and hooks, such as spoons or live bait, the casting will be long;
  • The slow-sinking bombard is excellent for catching pike and pike-perch in winter.

Bombard fishing rod

Fishing stores sell special rods for bombard fishing. As a rule, their length is more than 3 m. They have very soft and flexible forms for casting range and convenient landing of fish. To make fishing comfortable, you need to take a light rod.

But at the same time, the spinning rod or fishing rod test must correspond to the weight range. If a bombard is used from 10 to 45 g, then the rod should be taken with exactly this test (preferably with a margin of plus 5 g).

This way the fisherman will feel the bite well and not be afraid of breaking the spinning rod.

Practice shows that medium action spinning rods are best suited.

As for the length of the rod, you should understand that if the leash is 1.5 m, then the length of the spinning rod should be no less than 3.5 m.

Ideally, the rod should be 2.5 times longer than the leader, otherwise long casting will be problematic.

You can also use domestic three-meter spinning rods, but make leashes approximately 1 m, especially if fishing on a small or medium-sized river.

A reel for long-distance casting must be inertia-free with a spool diameter of 2000 to 3000 thousand (according to Shimano classification). But this is not important, if we are talking about a small river, then a 1000 spool size will do.

Fishing for trout with a bombard.

This topic is very broad and worthy of a separate story, because there are a lot of nuances and Western developments in it. In practice, in Russian ponds, the bombard for trout fishing is most often used in two cases - when fishing in the surface and bottom layers of water. When trout feed at the surface, they rarely come within shooting distance of the shore with conventional spinning baits, so long-range bombards have to be used. Streamers are good as bait, they are carried out with a very slow, even retrieve or in jerks. The most catchy ones are dark baits, for example, black and red ones. This is understandable - the trout attacks the bait from below, and dark silhouettes are better visible against the sky.

Lures and methods for catching trout with a bombard.

The use of bombards when fishing for trout can be accompanied by the use of almost all natural and artificial baits. For example, autumn trout fishing will be successful if you use a bombard equipped with a wobbler or a small rotating spoon. In this case, the tackle should be chosen in such a way that during retrieving the bait passes as close as possible to the bottom or in the middle of the water flow. The main advantage of a bombard for trout fishing is the ability of the gear to carry bait at any depth chosen by the angler, which allows you to effectively search for fish. By changing bombards of different types, you can quickly determine the location of trout and start catching it.

Methods of fishing for trout using a bombard.

The main methods of wiring are stepwise and slow, uniform with a bombard wire along the bottom. When using stepwise wiring with a bombard, the winding must be slow and long. At the beginning of fishing, you should not focus on the duration of pauses, because it is not yet known how high the fish stays from the bottom. After the first bites, it will become clear what is better - to “lift” the bait up while retrieving or to lead it along the very bottom.

trout on bombarda

Leash length for trout fishing with a bombard.

It is very important to choose the length of the leash when fishing for trout with a bombard. During a pause, contact with the bait is lost, and the longer the leash, the stronger this is felt. For such fishing with artificial baits, I use only the lightest Japanese trout spinners and streamers. With them, the length of the leash should not be more than 60-70 cm, otherwise you won’t even guess about most bites during a pause in the retrieve. Edible baits, such as squid strips, maggots, whitebait, trout paste (which is important - they have different degrees of buoyancy), are better suited for step-by-step fishing with a bombard. You can play to your heart's content with the length of the retrieve - it happens that long pauses turn out to be very effective.

Another important point is that rainbow trout take edible baits more confidently, and the length of the leash can be increased to 1.5-2 m. Whether it is necessary or not is another question. A long leash allows the attachment to float more “naturally”, but reduces sensitivity. In Europe, judging by the local press, fishing with a bombard with trout paste is quite popular, which is attached asymmetrically so that when retrieved it rotates, attracting fish. The wiring pace can be quite high.

And it is for this reason (and at the same time also as a protector against overlaps) in the classic rig, a triple swivel of a conventional, single one is used; it may not be enough to relieve pressure from the fishing line. The fishing is so successful that with a bombard they catch even in narrow bodies of water, where it is not difficult to reach the opposite shore with a light spinner or wobbler. For some reason, this style of fishing is not so popular here. Perhaps because local fishing techniques turned out to be more effective.

Lures for trout fishing with bombard

Trout can be caught using a bombard with a variety of baits. Artificial ones are used more often, since such fishing is considered sporty and more dynamic. Natural baits and baits may be more effective, but they do not bring such emotions and pleasure from catching fish.

The main baits for trout fishing with sbirulino are:

  • spinners;
  • flies, nymphs and streamers;
  • fly wobblers;
  • wobblers and topwaters;
  • silicone baits.

There is no need to explain that the size of all listed types of bait is selected to the minimum size that is used in ultralight fishing.

The bombard also expands the capabilities of the baits themselves. By selecting the weight of sbirulino and the type of buoyancy, they can be carried out in any horizon. This way, a small wobbler can be immersed in the depths, and a twister can be presented to the trout at the very surface.
