Friends, as you understand from the title of the article, today we want to talk about such a concept as microjig.
For several years now, this type of fishing has been gaining great popularity due to its applicability on any body of water, regardless of its degree of pressure. At any time, be it before work in the morning or after work in the evening, we can always go out to the body of water closest to us and, using ultralight tackle, catch several fish that live in the coastal zone, while receiving a lot of emotions and pleasure. After all, good ultralight tackle allows us to truly fight even the smallest fish. But, closer to the point... Let's define what microjig is and quickly move on to the experts who answered all our questions. So, microjig is a type of jig fishing in which we use the lightest heads and small baits. Most fishermen have conditionally determined that microjig fishing includes fishing with lures with a total weight of up to 5 grams.
Probably, many beginners in ultralight fishing, in particular microjig, have a lot of questions about choosing the right gear, lures, fishing technique, and so on. We asked our experts and this is what they told us.
Choosing microjigging gear
Grigory (Grinya) is an active fisherman, eminent user of the site, specialist in Aiko products:
Tell us about what parameters a good microjigging rod should have.
A good MJ rod, first of all, should have the most honest test possible. The most important parameter is the lower test range
It is important that the pole can adequately throw the minimum working weight. If we are talking about rods in the test range up to 6-7 grams, then such rods should send 1 gram no closer than 20 meters
Of course, the MJ fishing rod should be light, because the lighter the weight, the better we feel with our hands all the bites, hitting the grass and the fall of the bait to the bottom. It is also important that the stick has a comfortable and not too long handle, because a brutal handle limits us in the animation of baits.
Which system will be optimal? Are there differences in action between lake and river microjig fishing?
In terms of structure, here as in a regular jig, everyone has their own cockroaches. I love hard rods, but I meet guys who catch great and use moderate rods. If you try to average, then the optimal tuning will be Fast, with a footnote that the top test is 5-7 grams.
When choosing a stick for a river and a lake, of course, for a lake I will choose any stick, but for a river only an evil one. Firstly, there is a current on the river, which increases the resistance of the bait, but there is none on the lake. If I were choosing one stick for all bodies of water, I would also take fast, but these are my personal cockroaches)
Is a glued top required?
Based on the insert, I’ll say this - it’s desirable, but not at all necessary. If the spinning rod has an honest test, then when purchasing we can select a fishing rod test in which we will see the bottom touching and a bite; in this case, solid (glued-in tip) simply increases our range of baits used. For example, we have two reservoirs, on one the most popular weight is 1 gram, on the other - 3 grams. If we take a tube (ordinary tip), then we need a test up to 4 grams, but with such a top it will be difficult to perform evil animation, but with a solid we can take a stick up to 6 grams and it will cover both polygons for us. On the other hand, with a tubular rod we cover a greater number of types of fishing; you can also pull minnows, for example.
What parameters should a reel for microjig fishing have?
Light weight, ideally up to 200 grams, if you just assemble a normal set - up to 220. As for the volume of the spool, I am completely a diving enthusiast in this matter. I always take the capacity 2004 - this allows me to avoid a huge amount of backing, and the diameter is larger than 1000 and 1500 reels, which adds to the casting.
In what price segment can you choose the most inexpensive reel that meets all the basic parameters of microjig fishing?
From my point of view, I would not consider the popular Daiwa Revros 2004 reel lower for serious fishing.
Fishing in relatively clean places
Microjigs can be used almost anywhere; any part of a body of water with a gentle current and not very deep is suitable. I very often fish with a microjig in places where a continuous strip of vegetation along the shore makes it difficult to position a wobbler or spinner. Having entered waist-deep water in a wading suit, I cast it straight in front of me. After the bait falls to the bottom and the line weakens, you need to pick up the slack and make 3-4 turns of the reel at an average pace. While reeling, you can play along with the tip of the rod, making short movements with an amplitude of 3-4 centimeters. This type of fishing is reminiscent of winter fishing with a baitless jig. It is advisable that the tip of the spinning rod be on the outside of the thickets. It is quite difficult to track the fall of a jig head weighing 3-4 grams to the bottom by the trembling of the rod tip, so it is best to do this by sagging the fishing line.
You can fish without moving the rod, but still I often use pulsating wiring, because it was this method of leading the bait that brought me a lot of humpback perches, zander and rotan gobies. Sometimes, when fishing in a current, pulsating retrieval can be done without operating the reel at all. This method is very good for catching perch. After casting, you need to let the bait sink to the bottom, and then perform trembling movements with the rod without reeling in the reel. In this case, the main thing is to choose the right weight of the jig head, so that when the bait comes off the bottom, it is carried away a little by the current.
When wiring with a coil, when after several revolutions there is a pause, and then again several revolutions, nuances are possible. First of all, this concerns the number of revolutions of the coil. The standard three-turn pattern can be used almost always and everywhere, except for two cases: catching dispersed perch and inactive pike perch.
When catching dispersed perch, the pace of fishing is important: since most bites occur during the active phase of the retrieve, and not during a pause, lifting the bait too high from the bottom is contraindicated. In this case, it is best to lead the bait by making 5-8 turns with the reel at a fairly slow pace, playing along with the rod and short pauses.
When catching inactive pike perch, everything needs to be done exactly the opposite. One turn of the coil and a fairly long pause. This wiring has much in common with the pulling wiring for demolition (see below). Bites most often occur during a pause.
When fishing places with a sandy bottom, especially rifts and pits, a great option is demolition fishing with dragging. There are two options. The first is that the bait is equipped with a head of such weight that it can easily be carried away by the current. The cast is performed across the current, then the reel handle is rotated very slowly (the function of the reel in this case is only to pick up the slack in the fishing line). The main object of such fishing is medium-sized pike perch. Sometimes even pike perch responds only to dragging, completely ignoring any other techniques. This is especially noticeable when fishing in coastal longitudinal ditches.
Lure
You can get bait by combining ingredients such as peas, millet and pearl barley, and if you add anise oil to this mixture, you get a super catchy bait. The bait is prepared as follows: the pearl barley is steamed, and the remaining components are added to it in equal proportions. After this, all elements are left for 2-3 hours. After this time, the water is drained and the contents of the container are mixed. Finally, a few drops of anise oil are added to the mixture and the mixture is mixed again.
Cake and crackers
To prepare such bait you need to grind the following components:
- breadcrumbs – 1 kg;
- mince 0.5 kg of roasted sunflower seeds;
- shortbread cookies – 0.5 kg;
- wheat chaff – 1kg;
- semolina – 1 kg.
- vanilla and cinnamon - 20g each.
Soldier's bait
It is prepared from what is available, and the following is available:
- Crackers of any origin.
- Millet.
- Corn flour.
- Fried Hercules.
- Oat cookies.
- Various flavors (ginger, cinnamon, anise, vanilla).
- Bloodworm.
- Worm (chopped).
- Maggot.
- Clay or earth.
When using a feeder, ingredients such as soil or clay are not added.
Rusks need to be mixed with yogurt
This additionally stimulates the appetite of the crucian carp, and white spots in the water column will certainly attract fish. Very often, regular milk is added to bait, which performs the same functions as yogurt. The same functions are performed by most small particles, such as breadcrumbs, which float out, creating a feeding spot in the water column.
When fishing in cold water
Groundbait consisting of 10 parts mole soil and 1 part chopped worms is very effective. This mixture forms small balls that are easily thrown into the water. This is a very simple, affordable, but very effective recipe.
Bait for fishing with a float rod
Can be prepared according to the following recipe. Take any crackers and roasted seeds in equal proportions. To these components you can add a little food for aquarium fish, bloodworms and a little vanillin. Then everything is mixed with soil with the addition of water. The result should be a mass from which balls can be easily formed.
You can also easily prepare bait from cake and flour
Despite the fact that the recipe is very simple and quick and easy to prepare, the bait turns out to be quite catchy. Since this is a quick recipe, it can be prepared directly while fishing using water from a reservoir. The dough is made from flour, a little flavoring should be added to it (do not overdo it), after which the dough is made into balls, which are rolled in cake or breadcrumbs. Once in the water, the crumbs will begin to float, separated from the dough, and will begin to attract crucian carp.
Fishing technique
When fishing with a microjig, a wide variety of types of bait movements and animations are used:
Step retrieve is a classic jig step with the bait touching the bottom. Usually two or three turns are made with the reel handle, then a pause during which the bait lowers and touches the bottom
When fishing with step fishing, it is important to choose the right bait load for the specific depth of the fishing spot.
Retrieving by tossing bait is a bit like step retrieving. Tossing is done as follows: the bait is cast, wait until the bait touches the bottom, the slack line is reeled out, a light toss of the bait is made with the hand and spinning blank, then a pause, the bait falls to the bottom, the slack line is reeled out and a new toss is made
Read: Preparation of float gear for pike and fishing techniques
In addition to the single toss, there is a double toss of the bait, when the hand makes two movements, then the bait makes two jumps, the first from the bottom, the second already in the water column, after which the bait falls to the bottom. Tossing makes the bait play very bright, well provoking the predator to attack.
Uniform retrieving consists of simply rotating the reel handle without stopping, while the bait moves evenly under water. You can diversify the uniform wiring with additional movements with the tip of the spinning rod. Uniform wiring shows good fishing results when the fish is in a passive state.
Wave-like wiring is performed by moving the tip of the spinning rod as when twitching. Wave-like wiring is used for fishing in the water column, while preventing the bait from touching the bottom. Wiring can be used both when fishing in currents and when fishing in still water.
Techniques and features of catching crucian carp and other peaceful fish with a silicone worm
Silicone baits can only be used when fishing with a float rod or using a jig. Since this fishing is active, i.e. involves constant “playing along”, get ready for a difficult but exciting process.
You need to stock up on dark hooks that will not be noticeable underwater. Use worms of different colors.
When you throw the tackle into the water, do not be confused by the possible bite: while the hook sinks to the bottom, the worm will wriggle as if alive, which can provoke an attack by the fish.
Play with the float so that the bait rises from the bottom and falls smoothly, creating vibrations that excite the fish. If you use a jig, then you will have to play more often, because... the weight of the tackle will cause the worm to sink too quickly.
This fishing can be especially successful in windy weather. Of course, every fisherman loves silence and smooth water surface, however, if the wind creates waves, then an excellent imitation of a living worm will be created that crawls along the bottom. If you go fishing on such a day, then be sure to try this type of bait.
It would not be superfluous to remind you that in order to successfully catch crucian carp, you should use bait to increase the chances of success.
How to catch perch with a jig. Types of postings
Depending on the activity of the predator, spinning anglers use different variations of bait placements. With fishing experience, each angler determines for himself the most effective rhythms for performing montage animation, but the fundamental types on which his own developments are based remain unchanged. Our conversation will continue on the technical features of classic wiring.
Uniform
Uniform retrieving or the so-called pyological jig, when the nozzle with a load after casting is reeled in with a reel, holding it in the water column, without touching the bottom or pauses. The bait moves with a swaying and natural movement. Fishing in the current gives the movements an even more natural look. They use wiring when fishing for active fish.
wavy
This type of feed is very attractive to the predator due to the vibration that is created by the spinner by alternating a smooth reeling with moments of its sharp intensification. These amplifications create an imbalance of vibrations that attract striped fish to the fishing site. By alternating reeling speeds, the installation moves in waves, falling to the bottom at slower stages. The wave method is used for passive fish.
Stepped
Catching perch with microjigs, medium and heavy jigs is based on this type of fishing. After casting, the load is placed on the bottom and after a micro-pause, they begin reeling, consisting of two or three powerful movements with the reel handle. At this moment, the bait jumps from the bottom and makes steps with jerks, falling again to the bottom during a pause. With such rhythms, the line is wound throughout the cast, catching the promising trajectory of the reservoir. Wiring is also used when the predator is apathetic, provoking the fish’s aggression with even sharper jerks.
Hooking and landing
The bite of a striped fish is felt as several dull pokes followed by vibration. In such circumstances, the fish in most cases self-hook, sucking the hooked bait into its throat with a powerful stream of water. Vibration indicates that the fish is firmly on the hook.
Now the angler is required to be careful while fishing for the trophy
Small okushats go to winding the cord with virtually no resistance, only occasionally trembling. A large croaker puffs up its fins and, standing sideways to the reeling path, exerts significant forces, which can lead to a lip breakage during sudden movements. In the depths of fast currents, they try to catch fish along the flow of the stream, thereby reducing the force of resistance
The angler is required to be careful, which is expressed in the step-by-step selection of the cord and the release of tension through the work of the blank, either lowering the spinning rod to the water, or increasing the angle of its rise. Exhausted by such confident actions, the robber will already be tired when approaching the shore and will calmly enter the landing net using the spinning rod itself.
Lures for spinning fishing
Crucian carp have a small mouth, so the bait should be small and narrow. When using a spinning rod, choose spinning baits made of silicone up to 2 cm in size, which resemble worms, leeches, crustaceans, maggots, and bloodworms. Twisters and slugs are perfect.
The combination of baits of animal and plant origin gives the best results.
Out of caution, crucian carp always first tries the bait and, if nothing repels it, swallows it, so you need to choose edible silicone. Fragrances are often applied to baits to attract fish. They are also equipped with jig heads weighing up to 4 g
Meat baits are also good - maggots, bloodworms, worms and larvae. Vegetable options include corn (boiled or canned), barley or millet porridge, and bread crumbs.
Important! It is necessary to ensure that the bait is not bright and has a natural color suitable for the habitat of the aquatic inhabitants being described.
The right baits
As mentioned above, it is best to catch crucian carp using a microjig using miniature silicone baits. It is important that the silicone is edible.
- To begin with, it’s worth focusing on imitation bloodworms and maggots from Berkley and protein worms.
- At the same time, we should not forget about the various imitations of larger invertebrates. For example, Reins Ring Shrimp from in the smallest size or Crazy Fish Crayfish and Allure. Various twisters and worms from the Crazy Fish line are perfect.
The main installation is a jig head, the weight of which should not exceed 2 grams. This is necessary so that the bait sinks as slowly as possible.
Fishing technique
The fishing technique depends on the time of day and weather, because... crucian carp reacts to different wiring.
The first and easiest way is the classic step. During this wiring, experiment with the timing of pauses. Sometimes crucian carp actively grabs the bait in a three-second pause, but sometimes you need to pause for 4-5 seconds.
If the fish is at depth, then it is better to do the retrieve slowly with long pauses of 10 seconds, while you must continue to play with the bait to attract the attention of the fish. Very good wiring if you just slowly drag the bait along the bottom and also take long pauses
As a rule, during a pause, a bite follows; it looks like a pull to the side. At this moment, you need to move the rod forward a little so that the tension does not loosen too much, and the crucian carp grabs the bait better, and only then make the hook.
If you catch crucian carp in shallow water, then it is better to make an itchy retrieve. This is when, in the process of dragging the bait along the bottom, rhythmic tosses of the bait are performed.
Sometimes it’s worth leaving the bait in place, but continuing to make throws.
During zhora, the bites of crucian carp are very strong and sharp. During this period, retrieving is done with constant play with the tip of the rod and smooth reeling of the fishing line. Crucian carp can even rush after the bait during this period. At this moment he grabs the bait and moves away. You don’t even need to hook it, it hooks itself.
This type of fishing is somewhat unusual for crucian carp fishing. It requires certain skills and high-quality equipment, but fishing with a microjig will be very exciting and exciting, and every crucian carp you catch will bring a lot of unforgettable sensations.
Posting options
Depending on the time of day and weather conditions, crucian carp prefer different wiring. In the morning hours, he tries to stick to deeper places where the water temperature does not fluctuate much. In this case, the fish prefers slow movements with frequent, long stops of 10–15 seconds. In this case, it is necessary to constantly twitch the bait so that it continues to wriggle and dance in the water, attracting the attention of the fish. Slow dragging along the bottom, also with long stops, works very well. But at the same time, the cord must be kept as taut as possible, so that it is possible to record a timid, uncertain crucian bite (especially in the morning, the fish, having taken the bait, immediately spits it out), for this purpose it is necessary to clearly understand what is happening with the bait at the other end of the tackle .
For the most part, bites at this time occur during a long pause and they look like a slow pull of the cord to the side. In this case, it is necessary to let the fish get used to the bait a little, and when pulling the line, it is best to move the rod a little forward to ease the resistance (tension), and then hook.>
As the water warms up, the crucian carp begins to move to shallower water areas and its activity increases. In this case, he prefers the so-called “itchy” retrieve, when, while dragging the bait along the bottom, frequent, rhythmic tosses of the bait are made. In some situations it is useful to leave the bait in place (on the bottom) but continue the itching game.
But during the day the bites are completely different. They are more daring and aggressive. Therefore, wiring should be done in the water column with constant play with the tip of the rod and smooth winding of the cord. From the outside, this wiring resembles playing with a winter fishing rod, which is why I got the name “mormyshing”. The crucian carp, in this case, can rush after the bait and quickly move to the side. It looks very impressive. The cord quickly tightens, rushing to the opposite bank. In this case, cutting, as such, is not needed. The edibility of the bait will not allow the fish to spit it out, and the sharp hook will dig into the fleshy crucian carp lip. It is only necessary to fine-tune the reel clutch well in order to avoid the annoying breakage of light equipment from a fish such as large crucian carp that is powerful in resistance and not yet quite common for a spinning angler...
What is microjig
Microjig is a type of jig fishing that involves the use of light baits. It should be taken into account that nanojig is a separate section of jig, in which the weight of the bait is even less.
There are the following types of jig fishing:
- heavy jig - bait weights 42 g or more;
- medium jig - baits weighing 21 - 42 g are used;
- light jig - bait 7 - 21 g;
- microjig - from 3 to 7 g;
- nanojig - bait weight no more than 3 g.
The terms “microjig” and “ultralight” should not be confused: the latter involves spinning fishing with light and ultra-light baits in general, including fishing with spinners, wobblers and any other types of bait. Microjig, in turn, is a section of ultralight and involves exclusively jig fishing.
Advantages of micro jig fishing
There are several reasons why microjig fishing has been rapidly gaining popularity in recent years.
- Catability: when fishing with a micro jig, you can always have a good catch. “Heavier” types of jig cannot provide such confidence in success. Moreover, even when biting and playing with a small (no more than 100 - 150 g) predator, you can enjoy the amazing sharpness and completeness of sensations.
- Versatility: microjig can be used on any type of reservoir in almost any conditions.
- Simplicity: mastering microjig is quite easy even for a novice angler.
- Lightness and elegance of the gear: the low weight of the baits used also implies the use of appropriate gear. The spinning rod for mirojig is light and compact; you can comfortably fish with it all day long, making cast after cast, and at the same time not get tired at all.
Report on catching crucian carp using microjig
I am mainly interested in rock fishing, but I also don’t ignore fishing in freshwater bodies. This time I went to the pond, which is located on the outskirts of the city. Spinning anglers can catch common perch and sunfish here. They say that there are pike perch and pike there, but I haven’t caught them myself and haven’t even seen others catch them. There is also a standard set of peaceful fish here: crucian carp, roach and carp.
A strong wind was blowing, my friend and I tried to choose fishing points in the direction of the wind, so as not to blow a strong arc, since we planned to fish with light weights. I started fishing with Berkley bloodworms. The bite happened while falling, the fish began to move from side to side. This fish turned out to be a palm-sized crucian carp. The nature of the resistance is somewhat similar to the slab. This was my first crucian carp caught on a spinning rod.
A friend was fishing with a Crazy Fish Nano Zero spinning rod using light jigs of 0.4-0.6 g. He had a lot more bites, including crucian carp. For bait he used FishUp Tanta 1”. He had several catches of crucian carp, but still managed to catch one. This crucian carp was already larger than what I caught.
In addition to crucian carp, we managed to catch several microscopic sunfish. There were few fish and no bites, but the caught crucian carp put me in a good mood. There is only one conclusion that can be drawn from fishing: to successfully catch peaceful fish, it is advisable to choose small baits of natural shapes with minimal loading. It’s good that my TailWalk SSD Aji allows you to fish with weights of 0.5-0.6 g. Next time I’ll stock up on jigs of this weight.
In addition to Berkley bloodworms, I also tried Berkley Powerbait Honey Worms and Kosadaka BugSy. There were bites on both baits, but they were sluggish and could not be realized. Most likely it was a sun perch that attacked it.

How to equip a spinning rod for crucian carp
To catch such small fish you need a sensitive rod, so it is not at all necessary to take a long spinning rod. You should select a suitable reel, fishing line, the desired number of hooks and sinkers. If you collect your gear correctly, it will make your fishing more successful.

Rod selection
For catching crucian carp, a sufficient length of spinning rod will be 2.4 m with a test load of up to 5–7 g. An ultralight rod with a monolithic and flexible Solid Tip tip is suitable. It must have a fast or ultra-fast action, so it is better to abandon telescopic options. However, you can also use composite materials: although they are heavier, they are resistant to damage.
A carbon fiber product would work well. Its lightness and short length will guarantee high sensitivity.
fishing line
The rod should be equipped with ultralight or light braid with a cross section of 0.1–0.2 mm. It is durable, low-stretch and responds faster to bites. Its disadvantages are its higher price and the fact that it is more difficult to untangle.
Did you know? For thousands of years, fishing lines were made from horsehair, and sometimes from cotton or linen thread. The very first artificial material for them was nylon, invented in 1937 by scientists from an American laboratory.
It is better to use fluorocarbon for a leash, as it is almost invisible in the water and will not scare away the fish.
Coil
A small spinning reel of size 1000–2000 is suitable for a spinning rod with an ultralight rod. It fully matches this type of rod and line. The friction brake must be of good quality and smoothly adjustable to prevent the fish from trying to get off the hook. The crucian carp may be small in size, but it will resist to the end.
Here you can read about how to deliciously cook crucian carp in the oven.
Hook
For small fish, it is enough to purchase single hooks No. 3.5–7 (according to domestic numbering) with a standard shank. Its sting should be slightly bent inward, since with this shape it is more convenient to hook fish. For a crucian carp weighing only 200 g, a hook No. 3.5 is sufficient, and for a half-kilogram individual you will need No. 5–7.
Did you know? Crucian carp have an excellent sense of smell and notice parts per million of substances secreted by the inhabitants of the reservoir. They are also real drug addicts who can be lured by the smell of garlic, fragrant edible oil, Corvalol, valerian or even kerosene.
They are attached to a leash 10–15 cm from the sinker located at the end of the fishing line. There can be up to 4 leashes. Experienced fishermen, when catching crucian carp from a muddy bottom, prefer to choose black hooks. You can use a jig head (2 g) or a tungsten jig (weighing about 2 g).
Sinker
You can use a sinker weighing 0.5–3 g. It is attached to the very end of the main fishing line. It is better to mount it using a swivel so that it can be easily replaced. There should be 30 cm from it to the point of connection with a leash 10–15 cm long. You can hang a feeder next to the sinker.

How to catch crucian carp on a spinning rod with a micro jig
Crucian carp is the fish that is most often caught first in life and with which an irreversible immersion into the world of fishing begins. At first, catching crucian carp with a float rod seems exciting, interesting and, most importantly, productive. But when the craze for spinning sets in, this fish is completely forgotten, giving preference to pure predators. However, crucian carp can be caught with a spinning rod using a microjig. And you can catch it not somewhere in the Volga-Akhtuba floodplain or Krasnodar estuaries, but in an ordinary pond ten minutes walk from home.
In various encyclopedias, crucian carp is listed as a peaceful fish that feeds on small invertebrates and plants. And yet, catching this fish with a spinning rod is possible, moreover, systematically and predictably. But here it is very important to overcome the psychological barrier and streamline your actions. First of all, for the first few fishing trips it is better to go to a small body of water, where, apart from crucian carp, there is either no other fish at all, or there is some, but from the category of peaceful ones. This way, there will be no distractions and the fishing will not be ruined.
- Spinning tackle ↓
- The right baits ↓
- Techniques for catching crucian carp using a spinning rod ↓
A structural feature of crucian carp is its small mouth. Based on this, baits will need a minimum size. Particular attention should be paid to the rod-line connection - they are responsible for controlling the bait and fixing the bite.
Where and when to fish
Crucian carp, due to their measured and slow lifestyle, does not quickly respond to bait. But other river fish (for example, perch) are more active and get hooked more often, so it is important to choose the right area of the reservoir where crucian carp are found. They prefer to live in small lakes with peaceful neighbors. A pond with a lot of “spots” and “palms” weighing up to 200 grams is perfect.
Attention should be paid to the demarcation line between water and vegetation. Places with reeds are good.
If there are predatory fish on a section of a river or in a reservoir, then it is better not to look for crucian carp there. Predators will react faster to the bait and will scare away smaller and timid fish. It is worth looking for differences in depth (slopes, edges) where there is vegetation.
Also find out how to salt crucian carp on a ram at home.
To get a big catch, be sure to pay attention to the weather. In hot weather, the fish in question is not active, and in cold weather it goes to depths where it is difficult to find. Therefore, it is better to fish in warm weather. In the morning and evening, the crucian carp will stick to the bottom, and in the daytime it may end up at different levels, including on the surface.
In autumn, crucian carp bite until frost, but not as actively as in summer. It is difficult to catch it in winter, as it goes deep and is inactive. Fishing should begin no earlier than the ice melts from the river.
In hot weather, it is better to catch this fish at night.
At the beginning of spring, fishing is more promising in shallow water, near the shore, where crucian carp appear immediately after wintering in search of food. During this period, you need to pay attention to areas of the reservoir with remnants of vegetation from last year. Spring fishing is the most effective, as the fish are active in order to obtain food. In summer, it is better to pay attention to holes with a depth of 1–2 meters and creeks that are protected from gusts of wind.
Important! Please note that when catching crucian carp you need to constantly change the place. Several casts can alert river inhabitants, so you need to move a little to the side.
In hot weather, it is better to catch this fish at night.
Features and techniques of catching crucian carp using a spinning rod
Don't forget that spinning tackle definitely requires wiring. Otherwise, it will resemble a donka. Rotate the reel handle slowly and smoothly. Sudden jerks and movements should not be made, because crucian carp is a peaceful and timid fish. In addition, slow tracking will give him the opportunity to better examine his future prey and swim to a close distance to it. Therefore, only light playing with the tip of the spinning rod is allowed.
Quite long pauses of up to 10 seconds are also required. This is due to the fact that crucian carp are slow and first study the bait before trying it. If your goal is a large crucian carp, then the wiring should be even slower. The fact is that such fish are even more careful and are almost always at the bottom. Therefore, long stops will not be unnecessary.
After casting, you must also wait a few seconds, allowing the bait to sink to the bottom. After which you can do a few twitches. Now, as mentioned above, we alternate pauses and wiring. Bites mainly manifest themselves in the form of frequent and light twitches. Large specimens, on the contrary, “sit” firmly on the hook and bend the ultralight with powerful resistance.
When fishing, it is important to hook crucian carp correctly
At the same time, be prepared that most bites occur at the beginning of the pause. It looks like someone is pulling the line to the side. It’s not worth doing the hooking right away. The crucian carp needs to be given time and the opportunity to grab the bait. Therefore, wait one or two seconds, move the rod forward a little and then hook.
On different bodies of water, crucian carp can react differently to the same bait game. So don't be afraid to experiment. For example, take longer or shorter breaks. When the water warms up above 20°C, it is better to try “itchy” retrieving - instead of stopping, make rhythmic movements with the spinning rod to the side. However, in any case, throw the bait at a right angle. This way it will sink to the bottom more slowly, attracting fish.
Those who are accustomed to catching crucian carp only with a float rod or bottom tackle wonder why this fish bites on spinning baits. This is due to the crucian carp’s interest in everything moving in the water. Just remember that when fishing with a float, you often pull the rod and line just a couple of centimeters, and a bite follows in a moment.
Spinning is not used as the main fishing tackle for crucian carp
However, this fish rarely feeds in this way. She prefers to look for food in the mud and at the bottom. In addition, the peculiarities of the body structure of crucian carp and its habits do not always allow it to react in time to a bait floating nearby in the form of a jig, twister or vibrotail.
First of all, this is an opportunity to diversify your fishing or try options for gear and bait that are more often used for fishing for predatory fish. In addition, be prepared for the fact that the catch with a spinning rod is often less than with a float rod or the same feeder. Whatever one may say, crucian carp is a peaceful fish and the gear for catching it must be appropriate. While spinning and microjig are an excellent option for perch fishing.
Additional information about spinning will be discussed in the video:
Edible for catching peaceful fish
Date: March 21, 2015 | 475
With the advent of more and more new baits and materials in the fishing industry, ideas about fishing are changing. Thus, until recently it was believed that spinning tackle and fishing with artificial baits were purely for catching predators and predatory fish. However, with the use of elegant spinning rods, thin lines of small ultralight baits, including edible silicone, the boundary between catching peaceful and predatory fish is smoothed out. And more and more often you hear about catching peaceful fish using a spinning rod. Edible, modern silicone baits have proven to be one of the most effective in catching unusual spinning trophies.
You can catch almost any fish, even the most seemingly peaceful ones. The similarity of many new generation silicone baits, not with fish fry, but with worms, leeches, crayfish, larvae, insects, significantly expands the list of fish species that can now be caught with a spinning rod. And in the old days, on fairly large rotating and oscillating spoons, there were bites from peaceful fish. Either a bream will be caught, or a seasoned carp. But such cases were extremely rare. With the use of certain types and subclasses of edible rubber, such trophies occur among microjigers more and more often - the species composition is wider, not only large specimens are caught, but also medium and small fish. This, of course, is very interesting and significantly increases the excitement of the fishing itself, because... Instead of the expected bass or pike, a large carp, or a qualifying crucian carp, or who knows who else may grab it. It is clear that it is not often possible to purposefully catch peaceful fish for food. In most cases, such bites happen along the way, when catching some kind of predatory fish. However, if you choose the right bait and type of food, you can slightly increase the chances of such unusual catches.
I will briefly mention those breeds of relatively peaceful fish that quite often come across microjigging and being eaten. In ponds and lakes, when fishing for perch and pike, which constitute the main catch for a spinning angler, bites of crucian carp, carp, and even tench occur. There are known cases of silver carp being caught for food. It is clear that the higher the concentration, the larger the population of some of the peaceful fish in the reservoir, the greater the chance of catching it with a microjig. So, there were cases when catching perch in a pond, and periodically I came across good crucian carp. In general, in that reservoir there were both carp and tench, but the population of crucian carp was the most numerous, and in general, the pond was constantly attacked by crucian floaters. But there was also perch there. While hunting for perch with an ultralight spinning rod, I also caught crucian carp. Sometimes 2-3 good specimens per fishing trip. But, alas, there were no bites from carp and tench. There were relatively few of them per reservoir. Of course, there were chances, but the probability of a bite was negligible.
Another case. A lake where, in addition to perch and pike, there were carp, crucian carp and tench. Same as in the previous case. Only there were very few crucian carp. There is also a little carp. But tench is in abundance. So, for food, along with catching predators, we came across tench, and very good ones. There were several carp bites. Well, I didn’t catch any crucian carp. So, we can conclude that with a large number of some kind of peaceful fish in a reservoir, the chances of catching it on a microjig increase very much, up to the possibility of targeted fishing of this kind.
So, carp, crucian carp and even tench, quite common inhabitants of many small and medium-sized enclosed reservoirs, are excellent and very real trophies for a spinning angler who practices microjig fishing for small edibles.
In rivers and their bays, channels, on edible silicone, again, along with catching a predator, you come across bream, carp, rudd, and catfish. Very small, delicate baits can catch gobies, small bream, even roaches. In bays where there are a lot of large rudd, they can be caught very productively with the smallest baits, with the lightest tails. Right up to nanojig, where edibles of 1” or less, or cut from edibles, are placed on a jig weighing up to 1g.
To catch peaceful fish, the edible fish should be the smallest, measuring 1, 1.5, maximum 2 inches. The best ones are silicone worms, slugs, twisters and crustaceans. The smallest vibrating tails will also work.
This is not a dogma, but it is on the smallest baits, on elegant gear, that there will be the most bites from a wide variety of peaceful fish. It is clear that peaceful fish are excellent at catching a live worm, and will be interested in its imitations made of soft silicone. Hearing interesting vibrations from playing with such bait, hearing an edible smell, the fish attacks. The bait is edible and is confidently swallowed by fish. This is how we catch unusual species of fish using a spinning rod. The tackle should be the thinnest, most elegant, equipped with a fluorocarbon leader of small diameter (no more than 0.14-0.15mm, unless you plan to catch something very large).
The edibility of silicone is a very important parameter, especially for peaceful fish. If this is only an insignificant factor for a predator, then if you want to catch peaceful fish, this is a must. In terms of color, dark colors (shades of green, purple, brown, black) work best for peaceful fish. Sometimes bright colors work well, for example, pungent green or salad. Natural colors, translucent, somehow not particularly popular with peaceful fish. But there will probably be bodies of water where these colors will work on peaceful fish.
Yes, if you fish with large twisters, crayfish, hybrids, 4-5” in size, you can grab a large carp, for example. And this happens.
A few separate words should be said about catching catfish using silicone and edible fish. Catfish, in general, can be considered a predator. But, of course, they catch it mainly with donks and various animal baits. It is also caught on spinning rods, but not as often. And it is possible to catch it purposefully, for example, for food, only where there are a lot of catfish.
It is not uncommon to see catfish wandering around the shallows, especially in early summer. They can bite on spinning bait not only from the bottom, but also in deep holes. There were bites near the surface and in very shallow areas of reservoirs. To catch catfish, you should use fairly large silicone. The favorites here are large vibrotails, silicone worms, crayfish, cuttlefish, all from 3 inches in size. Usually 4-6".

Techniques for catching crucian carp using a spinning rod
Crucian carp, as well as other white fish, have their own travel routes and characteristic points where they linger. One of these places can be called the reed border, along which crucian carp constantly moves in search of food.
Here it is very important to bait the bait as close as possible. And if the reed is quite rare, then a few deep casts will be useful.
Almost the same applies to fishing in windows among vegetation and along the borders of overgrown areas. But in windows, in addition to mounting on a jig head, you need to use a split shot. This is due, first of all, to the fact that in windows the crucian carp is very often found at medium depths and higher, and therefore it is necessary to place the bait precisely in this horizon. Wiring consists of a slow rotation of the reel with pauses and light play along with the tip of the spinning rod. Smooth movements are important for crucian carp, so you should not make sudden jerks. You can even start by practicing in shallow water, perfecting your movements.

Large crucian carp spend more time on the bottom, and creeping wiring has the greatest chance of inducing it to bite. But the speed should be minimal, and the pauses should be longer than in fishing for pike perch and pike perch. This is due to the fact that crucian carp are very slow and look at the bait for a long time before trying it.
It is interesting to catch crucian carp in gaps among the grass using the flipping method. It consists of short targeted casts into the nearest windows and quick fishing. So, moving from window to window, you can cover a long distance and quickly find active fish. However, this method requires sufficient depth (at least a meter) and a long rod if we are talking about fishing from the shore. In the case of a boat, everything becomes much simpler.

The most effective fishing for crucian carp is in the spring, when the fish gather in small schools and go out into shallow water. During this period, crucian carp feeds very actively, preparing for spawning. You can visually detect crucian carp by the movement of individual reeds. Despite the fact that this method works until the fall, in the spring the chances of catching a large crucian carp are significantly higher.
In early spring, two or three weeks after the ice melts, the crucian carp does not visually show itself, so the scheme of rapid movement with fishing at the boundaries of last year’s grass and shallow waters works here. The most promising areas are those where grass grows deep along the edge of the dump. Even if the depth difference is only half a meter, such a point is promising. The fishing tactics in this case are the same as when fishing for pike perch, but adjusted for depth
That is, special attention is paid to the fall and edges. Casting is best done at an acute angle to the edge, so that the bait remains on the drop in the fish’s field of view for as long as possible
The same is true for late autumn.
In summer, you will need a boat to search for crucian carp trails. It is best to search in the upper reaches of large ponds and reservoirs, where there are two factors that attract crucian carp - vegetation and shallows. An important criterion for such a search is transparency and low depth. You need to move chaotically, carefully peering into the water and marking the places where the crucian carp was spotted. After walking some distance and marking several points, you can begin targeted fishing. Although the large crucian carp is shy, it does not change its hunting paths and soon returns. Thus, even a seemingly hopelessly scared crucian carp will end up at the point (or nearby) where it was spotted.
The bite of a large crucian carp is a short poke and pull. However, during the spring feeding season, the bite can easily be confused with a perch bite. In autumn, the bite feels like a smooth and short pull
In general, crucian carp bites are very accurate, and therefore it is very important to pay attention to the general sensory of the gear. If this is difficult to do, then the bite needs to be controlled by the fishing line. Or rather, over a small area lying on the surface.
Or rather, over a small area lying on the surface.
Spinning fishing for crucian carp, despite certain technical difficulties, is of great practical interest. The size of the fish caught varies, but on average they are larger than those caught on a regular float rod. In addition, crucian carp is a kind of substitute for “real” fish when it is not possible to travel far or you have a limited time limit for fishing.
Where and when is the best time to fish with microjig?
In the spring , when crucian carp gather in small schools and enter shallow water, they feed very actively before spawning. Constantly in search of various worms and leeches, during this period fishing with this method is very effective .
This fishing is also very effective when crucian carp recovers strength after spawning. During this period, he eats a lot and is not picky in his choice of food.
In the summer , when the water warms up more, crucian carp prefers plant foods and reacts less and less to various worms.
In the autumn , when the water cools down and before wintering, the crucian carp begins its last meal , but it is very short and if you manage to catch this moment, the result will please you with a good catch.
It is necessary to choose large reservoirs in which the diet of crucian carp contains not only plant matter.
food, but also all sorts of worms, leeches, larvae. But in such reservoirs there are also a large number of predators who are also not averse to feasting on such food, so during retrieval the crucian carp simply will not have time to grab the bait before the perch somehow gets ahead of it.
It is best to fish in small bodies of water. In such reservoirs you can quickly find the location of crucian carp and start fishing faster.
Crucian carp can be anywhere in search of food. First of all, it is worth doing wiring in those places where crucian carp are often caught using float tackle.
Lures for catching perch with jigs
Jig baits for perch are mostly made of silicone, although in some cases foam rubber baits also show good results. Vibrating tails for perch, twisters, slugs, worms, crustaceans - these are just the most famous types of bait options. The essence of these baits, as well as their success, lies in a fairly accurate imitation of the movements of a living creature similar in shape to the bait. Adding attractants with odors to the silicone, which in most cases are unpleasant to humans, only helps the striped robber to quickly detect the bait. These types of silicones are called edible rubber.
The striped predator does not need large bait. Even seasoned humpback whales happily bite on silicone, which is no larger than a matchbox in size, but smaller individuals take bait one and a half to two centimeters in size. The variety of color forms of artificial soft fish provides fishing opportunities under different light intensities and water transparency.
Instructions for Beginners
What do beginners who are just about to try microjig fishing need to know? Firstly, it is worth understanding that microjig is precisely a type of jig fishing, that is, almost all fishing techniques, tips and fishing secrets that are used in jig are applicable here. The main difference is the small weights of the sinkers and jig heads used for microjigging, as well as the small size of the baits.
Who gets caught this way?
Since microjig involves fishing with small and light baits at close range, small fish predominate in the catches. However, contrary to popular belief, the prey of a microjigovik can be not only small things: the number of trophies may well include catfish, pike, pike perch and other predators weighing 3-5 or even more kilograms.
The feeling of fishing them on ultra-light tackle will certainly be unforgettable. True, for it to be completed successfully, the fisherman will need certain skills and a fairly high level of skill.
As for the species composition of catches, it can be quite unexpected.
For example, it happens that on days when the classic predator is inactive, the main fish in the catches of a microjig spinner turn out to be crucian carp and bream, which at first glance are completely “non-predatory”.
Since almost any “peaceful” fish, having reached a certain size, is not averse to snacking on the fry, the most unexpected trophies can be found in the catches of a microjigovik. And this, of course, adds interest to fishing. Microjig fishing is generally an excellent way to expand your fishing horizons.
Microjig is perhaps the best fishing method for beginners
When fishing with micro jig gear using appropriate small and light baits, it is very difficult to remain without a catch. Taking into account the fact that microjig is applicable almost everywhere and is very easy to learn, this fishing method can be called perhaps the best for novice anglers. It is the microjig spinning rod that will allow a beginner to catch his first trophies, strengthening self-confidence and laying a solid foundation for his love for spinning fishing.
Autumn preferences of crucian carp
With the onset of cold weather, the taste preferences of fish change. Crucian carp in the fall practically does not react to plant baits, which worked great in the summer months.
There is a deficiency of protein in the natural food supply, which is found in abundance in a variety of baits. They need to be fished for. First of all, these are bloodworms, maggots and worms. It is advisable to have all three types of bait available, as crucian carp become more finicky as winter approaches. It may well happen that today he only bites on a worm, but yesterday he took exclusively on bloodworms. Therefore, having only one bait, you can be left without a catch.
Often it is more effective to use sandwiches. In addition to bloodworms, maggots, and worms, its components should also include plant ingredients such as pearl barley and corn. In this case, one of the components must be bait.
It should be noted that large crucian carp continues to respond to plant baits in the fall. In this connection, fishing with sandwiches consisting of animal bait and plant bait can be very successful. Standard-sized crucian carp will also bite on them, and in addition there is a possibility of catching a trophy specimen.

Cord or fishing line?
Choice of fishing line. Braided or monofilament, what is the diameter? Which type do you prefer and why?
Sergey
The fishing line directly depends on the fishing conditions; as a rule, in my arsenal there is a very thin braided line according to the Japanese classification 02 or 03, for example Sunline Rock Fish PE. And also two forests of different diameters, a thinner one, for example, 0.10 and a thicker one, 0.14. A very important component is to achieve the optimal ratio of the arc of the fishing line and the time the bait falls, as well as how much control you have over the process. At some moments we will need an instant hook at the slightest contact with the fish, at others, on the contrary, we need to “disconnect” from fishing and let the passive fish chew the bait. Fluorescent leashes are required when fishing with braided line.
By the thickness of the leash we can further regulate the hanging time of the bait.
Vitaly
I always use 0.12 monofilament line. This is due to the fact that my main target for fishing with a jig is peaceful fish, and on a hard cord its lips will simply tear. Also on light weights, when using a cord, the wind causes many problems, both when casting and when animating a light bait.
What is microjig
By the word microjig, anglers understand both the method of spinning fishing and the equipment that is used for such fishing.
As a method of spinning fishing, microjig is fishing with light-weight jig baits and ultralight tackle. Microjig baits are silicone baits up to 2-2.5 inches (5-6 cm) long and weighing no more than 3-4 grams.
Microjig is based on classic jig, but at the same time it is very different from it, not only in the light weight of the baits used, but also in the wide variety of bait movements and animations.
In microjig, the balance of the gear plays an important role, so an angler who wants to devote himself to microjig fishing will have to purchase a special microjig set of tackle for himself.
Microjig allows you to specifically catch many types of predatory and peaceful fish. A spinner fishing with a microjig rarely feels the resistance of a large trophy fish at the other end of the line, but thanks to the use of ultra-light tackle with light baits, he feels a large number of bright and unforgettable bites.
Microjig is the most sporting type of spinning fishing; it is often used by spinning athletes at competitions of various levels.
Among spinning anglers fishing with microjigs, the Catch & Release fishing principle is more common than among other categories of fishermen.
How to catch crucian carp with a spinning rod?
Just a dozen years ago, crucian carp were rarely caught on a spinning rod and were caught by accident while catching a predator. According to the majority, crucian carp and spinning are incompatible things, because this peaceful fish is not capable of attacking artificial bait. However, with the development of spinning fishing and the emergence of new methods and techniques, some fishermen are already purposefully catching their pet with this tackle. Fishing for crucian carp with a spinning rod is effective in those reservoirs where there are not many predators and the crucian carp stays far from the shore.
