Catching pike perch in a vertical line: secrets and tricks
Fishing for pike perch differs from other hunts for carnivorous fish in that you constantly have to find it. Pike or perch, for example, move around a reservoir, changing hunting horizons, in order to search for food, and finding their position by the movement of the fry is not so difficult. Pike perch prefers to live and feed in the depths away from the shore. He actually does not leave his own ambush and very occasionally pursues his prey. It is virtually impossible to get pike perch from there with a spinning rod or other tackle, taking into account the depth, convexity of the bottom, and often the roughness of its habitat. But there is one sure-fire fishing method, using which the catch will be guaranteed. This is fishing for pike perch vertically from a boat. This method was invented in Holland for fishing for sea fish; alas, after some time it gained popularity among freshwater fishermen throughout Europe.

The principle of vertical fishing

For this type of predator hunting, you will certainly need a boat , because pike perch is not a fish that lives near the coastline. Even today, it is often necessary to travel a considerable distance through water before a fishing spot is discovered.

Catching pike perch vertically involves using an onboard fishing rod or a short spinning rod equipped with a spoon, wobbler or live bait, which are lowered to the bottom for vertical retrieval.

The fishing itself is carried out directly at the side of the boat, and often even under it, so a long rod is of no use here. Some fishermen even hook fish not with a fishing rod, but by sharply tugging the main line with their hands.

The best time of year for vertical fishing

They are caught vertically mostly in the fall. During this period, carnivorous fish are more active. Both pike perch, pike perch, and large perch hunt around the clock, stocking up on fat until winter. The best autumn bait is live bait or its “analogues” in the form of frozen fish.

But fishing for pike perch in the summer can also bring a good catch. During this period, it is better to use artificial baits: silicone vibrating tails or small colorful foam rubbers.

Plumb fishing technique

Catching pike perch in a vertical line requires a clear definition of its parking place. An echo sounder will best cope with this task; if it is not there, an ordinary heavy load on a fishing line will come to the rescue. Using it, you can easily find deeper places, as well as bottom riffles and edges, loved by pike perch. It will additionally help you find the type of bottom surface. There is no need to find this predator in muddy, silted areas. But an uneven rocky bottom at a depth of two or more than 6 m is what it needs.

Having identified a fishing spot, the boat is released into a free drift. If the current in the reservoir is strong, to slow down the movement of the craft, use an ordinary brick or a small bag of sand, which lowers the bottom. To recruit a predator, they use a huge feeder filled with bait, which includes fish meal, pieces of fish or liver.

Fishing for predators using a spinning rod

Catching pike in the fall from a boat by trolling has been known recently, but the technique itself is already old. Just a few decades ago, experienced fishermen took a standard reel, on which they wound fishing line, and a spoon was specially attached through a metal leash. If necessary, the bait was loaded. Only recently have they started using spinning rods for trolling fishing.

    Important! A leash must be present during fishing, as a toothy predator can easily bite through the fishing line.

Trolling a predator is profitable only in large water areas where fish gather in large schools. The main advantages of this technique include the following:

  • during the fishing process, the tackle does not need to be constantly thrown, since the bait will be in the water all the time;
  • You can use several forms at the same time;
  • the ability to use different types of bait.

The only disadvantage is that you can troll away from aquatic vegetation, as there is a high risk of getting caught on something.

In order to fish from a motor boat, you should do it slowly. Rafting should be done slowly, as the predator is cautious and does not react very well to loud sounds, especially from a motor boat. It is better to raft in a zigzag manner; the fish also moves in the same way. The bait should be placed about 0.5 meters from the bottom. If there is a lot of vegetation in areas, then it is better to raise the tackle a little higher.

As soon as you feel a certain blow from the pike, hook it immediately, but this is only the case if you are using artificial bait. If you are fishing with live bait, then you should wait a little so that the predator definitely swallows the bait.

Catching pike perch vertically in autumn

Autumn fishing for pike perch with sheer lures has recently gained a huge number of fans - and this is not surprising, because along with the classic spinning rod, sheer lures are active and very exciting fishing, not inferior to other types of pike perch fishing, both in terms of catchability and excitement. So, what is the sheer trolling of pike perch in the fall? Let's look at the basics and some of the subtleties of this fishing method.

Places for autumn fishing for pike perch

From the beginning of autumn until freeze-up, pike perch gradually slides into deep holes, where the main food for the predator - small fish - is abundant. Near these wintering holes, autumn fishing for pike perch can be very successful. Searches for accumulations of small things are best done using an echo sounder, and in its absence, based on information about such places extracted from the “aboriginal spinners”.

Choosing gear for vertical trolling

Tackle for catching pike perch with vertical lures must be durable, reliable and functional.

The fishing rod used is either a short and rigid side rod or a small spinning rod with guide rings. At the tip of the rod, be sure to install a small, sensitive nod made of a fairly elastic and stiff spring.

It is best to take a simple inertial reel, since thanks to its large diameter and smooth winding, it allows you to quickly and with the least effort reel off, wind the line, and dampen the jerks of the fish when playing it.

For this fishing method, it is best to use a braided cord with a cross-section of up to 0.15-0.16 mm, which, compared to a line of the same diameter, is stronger and more sensitive to bites.

As a rule, there is no urgent need for a leash - pike perch, unlike pike armed with small teeth, is less toothy and it is very difficult for it to bite or grind a strong braided cord.

The key component of the tackle for vertical trolling is an artificial bait - the best choice is a light winter pike perch spoon, elongated and narrow, with a triple hook No. 7-10, in shape and color reminiscent of pike perch's favorite delicacy - bleak. Under certain conditions, good results can be achieved by using such typical pike-perch spoons as castmaster, foam fish, jigs, and large autumn oscillating spoons.

How to choose a winter lure for pike perch

There are many options for catching a predator from the ice, but not all show results. To choose the right winter lures for pike perch, familiarize yourself with the basic parameters of such baits.

Spinner and hook size

The optimal size of a pike perch spoon, if fishing is aimed at large specimens, is about 10 cm. To catch medium-sized specimens, baits 5 cm long are sufficient. If hunting is planned at a depth of over 5 meters, then the size of the bait should be within 8 cm. Such versions able to quickly reach the desired horizon.

To catch winter pike perch, the weight of the spoon should not exceed 25 g. If there is a strong current in the fishing area, then you should choose appropriate, heavier baits.

For confident hooking and successful fishing, use triple hooks. When fishing with a single hook, predator attacks are often observed. The size of the hook should correspond to the size of the spoon. The forend must be sharp, and the hook itself must be reliable. It’s better to make sure of the quality in the store; there are many hooks on the market made of fragile material.

Winter fishing for pike with a spoon from ice The cherished trophy of every fisherman is a pike. But if many people know how to catch it in the summer, then how to catch it in the winter with “toothy”...

Spoon shape and material

For fanged predators, it is preferable to use narrow-bodied baits, long and fast. Wide spoons are more suitable for hunting pike. Sometimes an ordinary shiny rectangular metal plate equipped with a hook works. Here you should not be afraid to experiment.

Lures for pike perch are made from:

  • copper;
  • brass;
  • cupronickel

There are artificial baits on sale, made from one or two metal plates securely joined together. The free space is often filled with lead to weigh it down. This technique is more effective than soldering from the outside. Due to the softness of lead, after several tests with the teeth of a predator, the spoon loses its attractiveness.

Spoon color

In order for pike perch to notice the bait in the water column, you need to choose the right color. You can use any options, but colors such as:

  • silver;
  • white;
  • golden;
  • yellow.

For night hunting, it is worth choosing baits of bright or acidic colors; in the daytime, pike perch are better off using a duller version.

Technique for catching pike perch in a plumb line

Plumb fishing is carried out from the side of a comfortable and stable duralumin or rubber boat. The main requirement for a watercraft used for this method of fishing is stability and sufficient space to accommodate several people and the necessary arsenal of devices and gear.

Fishing is done by slowly drifting the boat under the influence of the current or wind over a pre-selected place. Since the fishing will be carried out, although at a considerable depth, but still directly under the boat, any manipulations with oars or the engine are avoided if possible, so as not to make unnecessary noise and not alert a suspicious predator.

If the boat drifts at a high speed, vertical fishing will be difficult - the line with the bait lowered to the bottom, once behind the boat, will bend very strongly in an arc, which will negatively affect the controllability of the spoon when playing. In such cases, anchor weights (weights, pieces of brick, etc.) tied to the side and lowered to the bottom on a long rope are used, with the help of which the drift speed of the boat is significantly reduced.

The technique of vertical fishing itself is quite simple: slowly and carefully releasing the line, the bait is lowered until it reaches the bottom, which is very easy to determine by straightening the nod at the tip of the rod, then with a sharp wrist movement the bait is thrown up 10-15 cm from the bottom, after which, thanks to Due to its structure, the spoon slowly floats back to the bottom, slightly deviating to the side and waddling as it descends. After the bait reaches the bottom again, wait 2-5 seconds and again jerk it above the bottom. The amplitude and energy of jerks is selected depending on weather conditions and the activity of the predator.

Choosing a spinner for catching pike perch in winter

A good and high-quality spinner, regardless of the lifting height, should have a stable, repeatable game, without going into a tailspin or various failures. The most valuable in winter are spinners that can play even when raised to a height of only 5-10 cm; such spinners will more than once save your fishing during the deep winter.

Length and weight

For hunting pike perch, a spinner with a length of 5 to 10 cm is often used; for catching medium-sized pike perch, small 5-6 centimeter spinners will be sufficient; a spinner with a length of 10-12 cm is used when hunting for a trophy predator.

The weight of the bait depends on the depth of fishing and the presence of a current; on stagnant bodies of water and reservoirs, spinners weighing from 8 to 18 grams are used; on rivers, the weight of the bait can increase to 25 grams; if fishing for pike perch with a spinner in winter takes place in conditions of strong currents, then you may need and heavier spinners.

Form and game

The diet of pike perch is based on narrow-bodied fish (bleak, small roach, gudgeon), so it is preferable to use narrow-bodied baits, although there are frequent cases of pike perch actively biting on wide-bodied spoons.

At the beginning and end of winter, spinners with pronounced active play are used; during the deep winter, when due to severe frosts, pike perch behave sluggishly and inactively, it is better to use spinners with passive play.

Conventionally, the game of winter spinners can be divided into three types:

  • The first type is gliding spoons, which during their fall significantly deviate away from the axis of the hole. These baits work well for active pike perch, and are also recommended for targeted fishing for pike in winter using a spinner. At great depths, the gliding properties of the spoon are reduced, and it works like a nail or a loose bait.
  • The second type is loose lures, such baits, after being lifted, fall to the bottom without deviating to the side, but only turning over from one side to the other.
  • The third type is carnations, after lifting they fall down, only slightly deviating to the side from the axis of the hole.

It is preferable to use spinners of the second and third types on low-active predators.

The concept of a nail and a loose bait is quite vague, since often, depending on the height of the bait, the depth of fishing and the presence of a current, the game changes, which is why the same bait can work both as a nail and as a loose bait.

Color and material

The catchability of a spinner is also affected by its color; the most catchy baits are those that have a silver color, since this is the natural color of the catfish’s most favorite prey - bleak. Golden spoons also work well, although they are inferior in catchability to silver ones.

Also, for catching walleye in winter, spinners of white, gray and golden colors are used. When the bite is weak, anglers try to experiment and use brightly colored lures.

Spoons made of two plates having different color shades (silver and golden) can spice up the game.

Phosphorizing spinners are often used at depth.

Most often, spinners are made of copper, bronze and brass; you can also find spinners made of other metals.

Hook

To successfully catch pike perch in winter using a spinner, you should use baits with double or triple hooks, sharp and strong, capable of breaking through the bony mouth of the pike perch; single hooks will be less effective.

To improve the bite, hooks are decorated with beads, pieces of bright rubber, threads, and sprat heads. Also quite popular are tees with a droplet opened with varnish. Read more about winter lures for pike perch here .

Sheer trolling from a boat (video)

When biting, the hook should be short, sharp and strong enough, since only under such conditions will the tee be able to pierce the dense pike-perch palate and be securely fixed in the predator’s mouth. You need to fish quickly and without delay, not allowing the fish to come to its senses and dive under the boat.

An exception to this rule may be fishing for large pike perch, which are better to be tired on a long line for some time before being removed from their native element and only then carefully brought to the boat.

Tell me how to catch pike perch on the NV in a vertical line? I’ll go to the Volga for the first time, I can’t imagine the strength of this river, how I caught everything on the lakes. Now I’m getting ready for the fall))

Re: Fishing vertically from a boat in summer

Are you going to fish on the Volga itself or on its tributaries? By the way, there are several films on the Internet about this. I don't have much experience. Now I’ll tell you briefly: In general, after graduating from university in 2000, together with classmates from Akhtubinsk, my friend and I ended up in Akhtuba. Well, one day the natives and I went fishing in a cauldron, but we didn’t have time to notice any visible gear from the locals, neither in the boat nor in the things we had grabbed (although the fishing was promised to be crazy). I won’t rant for a long time, but when the motor “died” and we just started rafting, the option of fishing with a “twitch” was suggested. which was removed from the side of the boat. As it turned out, this is what the locals called a side fishing rod with a strange cut piece of copper rod and a tee. The proposal, of course, did not evoke any enthusiasm, but only ironic remarks and laughter. The irony ended when, on the 3-4 swing of this same “pulling”, I felt a blow to my hand, and a pike of about 2 kg was lying in the boat. the continuation was approximately the same (this is NV) Now, after many years, I have been trying to test this method on reservoirs in the Moscow region, SO far WITHOUT RESULTS.

Catching pike perch in a vertical line

Catching pike perch vertically from a boat is one of the most productive and very exciting types of open water fishing. Thanks to the use of a motor boat, the method allows you to fish in places that are difficult to reach for shore spinning. The catch can consist of both small pike perch and large, and often trophy pike perch weighing 5-6 kg or more. What this type of fishing is, as well as how to choose the right place, time and bait, will be discussed in the article.

Rigging a vertical spinner for pike perch

For some fishermen, equipping homemade pike perch spoons may be the last operation before tying a vertical winter bait to the fishing line. I have to equip my homemade spoons with the necessary elements for catching pike perch in the process of soldering the homemade product.

The fact is that I am an opponent of all unnecessary attachments dangling on vertical winter lures (not only pike perch), and if you have not visited this site for the first time, then you probably know about this.

Let's now try to understand the equipment elements of the bodies of homemade pike perch spoons, shown in the photograph under the title of the article.

Please note that none of my homemade pike perch spoons have winding rings. The mobility of the tees is carried out by hinges connected to them and soldered into the nasal ends of the baits.

Such equipment increases the stability of gliding trajectories not only of pike perch, but also of any vertical lures controlled by short winter fishing rods.

There are no swivels on the tail ends of homemade pike-perch spinners, which still do not fully cope with their duties as anti-twist mono-core or braid in the process of catching pike-perch.

Therefore, the fishing line of the winter fishing rod is tied directly to the loop of a vertical homemade winter pike perch spoon. Thanks to simplified equipment, greater stability is achieved in guiding vertical baits in real pike perch fishing conditions.

If we look at all my homemade walleye lures, then about a third of them are dominated by single-hook equipment with artificial nozzles, and in a third, doubles and trebles are soldered into the bodies of the baits.

The reason for such equipment is the hard, bony mouth of the pike perch, which is easier to pierce with one needle, and not with two at once, and, especially, not with three tees.

And the likelihood of a deep puncture will be much greater if all the needles are rigidly fixed in the body of the bait. And I talked about equipping homemade and purchased winter pike perch baits with tees suspended on spinners through winding rings.

Where and when is it better to catch pike perch in a plumb line?

You can catch the fanged inhabitant of river holes and pools throughout the open water season. However, such fishing is most productive in the fall, when pike perch actively feeds on the eve of winter, fattening up its fat.

The most successful fishing for pike perch from a boat takes place in places with bottom anomalies:

  • Sharp drops into depth;
  • The lower edges of the slopes;
  • Lumps and navels;
  • Debris of snags;
  • Boulders lying at the bottom;
  • Channel ditches within reaches;
  • Wintering pits;
  • Whirlpools near bridges and hydroelectric dams;
  • Extensive deep-water “tables” of large reservoirs.

Unlike summer, in autumn pike perch is more actively caught not at night, but throughout the daylight hours, although night fishing more often brings trophy fish.

Boat for vertical fishing for pike perch

It is advisable to take a boat with a flat bottom and comfortable benches. To move around a body of water, such watercraft are equipped with gasoline engines with a power of 10-15 hp.

On a note! For vertical fishing for pike perch, it is optimal to use two boat motors at once - electric and gasoline. A low-power electric motor is used for slow, silent movement around a promising area. A gasoline engine with a power of more than 10 hp. necessary for quickly moving from one fishing spot to another, quickly returning to the shore in case of heavy rain or big waves.

Important. The use of inflatable boats in vertical fishing is less preferable since they are less stable in waves and strong currents. In addition, inflatable boats are easily pierced by sharp bait hooks.

What other points should you pay attention to?

In the spring and autumn seasons, the choice of bait is limited solely by the capabilities and imagination of the fisherman. But the fisherman has only one boat, and its choice should be approached as seriously as possible, since this water transport is purchased for at least several years.

    Important! When choosing a boat, you should remember that on a large reservoir it is important to consider static stability in order to fish safely even during waves.

If you plan to hunt predators exclusively on the territory of domestic rivers and other bodies of water with fast currents, then it is better to choose a boat with an outboard motor with a power of about 5-15 horsepower.

For calm waters, a standard inflatable rubber boat with a rowing motor is quite suitable.

Gear selection

When catching pike perch from a boat, 3 types of gear are used:

  • A side fishing rod up to 1 meter long with an inertial reel on which a monofilament line 0.3-0.4 mm thick is wound. A bright nod made of a flat spring or thick cable insulation attached to the tip of a fishing rod is used as a bite alarm.
  • 210-centimeter jig spinning rod with dough up to 30 grams, glued in bright tip, spinning reel size 2500-3000. A braided cord with a thickness of 0.12-0.14 mm is used as the main fishing line in such gear.
  • Twitching hard spinning rod 180-210 cm long with a reel with a line capacity of 3000, equipped with a cord of 0.10-0.12 mm

In both types of gear, a 30-centimeter piece of fluorocarbon fishing line with a thickness of 0.3-0.35 mm with a swivel and carabiner is used as a leash.

Attention. The use of a metal leash in vertical fishing gear is practiced in places where large trophy pike stand in the pits along with pike perch. In all other cases, steel leaders worsen the performance of the bait, reduce the sensitivity of the equipment, and make it more noticeable.

Lures

The main baits used for this fishing method are the following:

  • Heavy jigs - narrow and heavy oscillating spoons weighing 20-30 grams;
  • Winter vertical spinners;
  • Balda;
  • Silicone baits – twisters, vibrotails – mounted on regular jig heads or collapsible Cheburashka sinkers with offset hooks. The weight of the head, as with jig fishing for pike perch, is selected taking into account the current and depth at the fishing site. So, for holes up to 10 meters deep, jig heads weighing 18-22 grams are used. For more serious depths and places with a noticeable current, sinkers weighing up to 30-40 and in some cases up to 50 grams are used.
  • Sinking wobblers – shads, minnows, crankbaits;
  • Live bait - bleak, verkhovka, sprat.

For vertical fishing with live bait, use equipment consisting of:

  • 60-70 centimeter piece of fluorocarbon fishing line with a thickness of 0.3 mm;
  • tied at the end with a “baldashka” (a sinker with a soldered-in large single hook);
  • 10 cm leash with a large single hook. Tie such a leash 30 cm above the “baldaveshka”;
  • A winding ring tied at the end of the rig and designed to attach it to the main fishing line.

On a note! Most often, fishing for pike perch with sprat is practiced when there is no bleak or high water. With the right choice of place and time, fishing with live bait will become effective and exciting.

Top 5 spinners for catching pike perch in winter

  • Ray - quite expensive, but at the same time effective pike perch bait. When falling, it deviates to the side and imitates the movements of a small fish well.

  • Gvozdik — When falling, this spoon practically does not deviate to the side and has weak vibrations, which makes the spoon excellent for catching pike perch in winter, especially passive ones. The shape of the bait is an oblong oval with an extension near the hook.

  • Nurse – has a narrow shape with curves. It is recommended for use in clear water, because during the retrieve it plays well with its sides, realistically resembling the movements of a fish and attracting a predator, and works well at different depths.

  • Uchinskaya - has a fairly large weight of 25 grams and is used in reservoirs with strong currents and deep water areas. Not suitable for fishing in shallow water. It falls to the bottom along a curved trajectory.

  • Three-sided — has a clearly repeatable and pronounced game, perfectly detects fish. Good for tapping the bottom.

It is worth remembering that no matter what model you use, catching pike perch with a spoon in winter will be successful only when you know where to look for the fanged one.
