Fishing in reservoirs
There are quite a few artificially created reservoirs on the territory of Kazakhstan; reservoirs are often vital for those cities that are located on their banks. Not only do enterprises take water from them, but reservoirs often serve as excellent places for recreation for local residents and guests of the region.
Samarkand
This reservoir has recently become very popular and not only among local residents. Most recently, the World Championship for fishing with a jig from ice was held on its shores. It took place in March 2021 and was quite successful. Many guests returned to Temirtau on open water to fully experience all the delights of fishing on the reservoir.
In the summer, both peaceful fish and predators are fished here. At the same time, the bite will be good both from the coastline and from watercraft.
There are many recreation centers on the shore of the reservoir where you can stay for several days or weeks with your family or friends. You can fish here only by paying a certain amount; it is usually offered to purchase a voucher, and its price will vary according to several factors.
Sherubaynurinskoe
Getting to this reservoir for fishing is not at all difficult; there are signs in Astana and almost throughout the central part of Kazakhstan. Fishing here is paid, but the catch is always good.
You can fish in different ways; just an hour’s drive from Karaganda you can unwind with any fishing rod in your hands. On the territory of the reservoir you can see:
- spinners on the coastline and on boats;
- a walk along the shore in open water promises more than one meeting with feeder fishing enthusiasts;
- In spring, fly fishermen are frequent visitors here;
- There are fewer floats on the reservoir, but this method of fishing is still found here.

There are fishing houses and cottage houses on the shore; here you can accommodate both a noisy group and find privacy. For an additional fee, you can rent fishing equipment to fish in the reservoir.
Kengirskoe
This reservoir boasts paid fishing, but the catch may not always live up to expectations. The cost of the pleasure is standard, the ticket must be purchased in advance, fish inspectors check regularly. Fishing here is carried out with different gear, mainly using a feeder and a float. Fishing for different fish:
- crucian carp;
- bream;
- gusterka;
- undergrowth.
A carp caught on a hook is considered a real trophy. In Zhezkazgan, located near the reservoir, you can purchase a ticket, find out in more detail who and when to catch, and also stock up on everything you need for successful fishing.
Zhezdinskoe
The reservoir is quite spacious, here you can catch different types of fish, both peaceful and predatory. To do this, you need to pre-pay for the ticket, and only then go to your favorite activity.
As in most reservoirs of this type, lovers of almost all types of fishing will find something to do here:
- They fish for pike, perch, and pike perch using spinning rods;
- feeders and hooks will lure bream, crucian carp and, occasionally, carp to the hooks;
- fly fishing enthusiasts can find asps in the spring;
- floaters will also have something to do; crucian carp, raft, and ruffs bite excellently.
An important point will be the use of complementary foods when fishing with a feeder; in the warm season, you should choose sweet options; cold water will require the use of meat and fish flavors.
On the shore you can camp in tents as savages, or you can book a house in advance and live in it with your family.
But besides reservoirs, there are many other equally interesting reservoirs in the region, where fishing will bring pleasure.
Peculiarities
Currently, there are about 200 rivers throughout Karaganda and the region. The Nuru is considered the main river among all. This river flows in the east-west direction, and then flows into the huge Kazakhstan Lake Tengiz. One of the longest lakes in the Balkhash region is located in the south of Karaganda. It should be noted that these places are among the most frequently visited by both professional fishermen and amateur fishermen. Lake Balkhash is quite amazing; salt water flows in the east, and fresh water flows in the west. In general, the lake is shallow, and the water in it is quite warm.
Rivers
In Kazakhstan, namely in the Karaganda region, more than 100 large rivers and small rivulets flow. They also have residents who are periodically fished. There are many interesting water streams; the following rivers are recognized as the most favorite among local fishing enthusiasts and visiting fishermen:
- Nura;
- Sarysu;
- Kulanotpes;
- Tuyndyk;
- Zharly;
- Taldy.
Each of them has quite rich water resources; there are plenty of representatives of ichthyofauna in them. Most often, small-sized pike and bass are fished here; pike perch is extremely rare. Burbot cannot be found in the region; it is found extremely rarely and only in the northern part of the country.
On the banks of the above rivers you can meet spinning anglers, float fishing enthusiasts, and fly fishers. Feeder fishing on rivers is not particularly developed, but there are still those willing to do it.
Lakes
When making a fish bite forecast in Karaganda, you should not forget about lakes, both natural and artificial. Any local fisherman will tell you that there are quite a few lakes in the region, a little more than 80 came from nature, the remaining 400 were built by people themselves. In most cases, artificial reservoirs are leased; they are regularly stocked with fingerlings of various species of fish, and then a certain fee is charged for the catch accordingly.
It’s also unlikely that you’ll be able to fish for free on natural lakes, but the catches here will be more serious.
The most popular among the local population and visiting fishing tourists are:
- Balkhash;
- Kypshak;
- Kiyakty;
- Shoshkakol.
On the shores of each of these reservoirs there are a large number of recreation centers and fishing cottages. Fishermen and their families often come here on vacation; their favorite pastime is often combined with outdoor recreation with family and friends.
It is necessary to buy a ticket; its cost is usually not included in the rental of a house or tent site. Children will find their own entertainment, catamaran rides, a hike in the forest, and just a walk along the shore of the lake will remain in the child’s memory for a long time.

The Karaganda fisherman's calendar lasts no more than five days; during this period the weather may change, pressure surges will negatively affect the bite of aquatic inhabitants. Each season makes its own adjustments to fishing; open warm water will become an ally in the search for fish, but ice cover, especially in the dead of winter, will not always please you with catches.
Summer fishing
Revival in ponds and other bodies of water begins in the Karaganda region with an increase in air and water temperatures. Melting ice allows fish to feed more actively, and many species experience pre-spawning feeding. It is during this period that a large number of fishermen can be seen on rivers, lakes and reservoirs.
Before going to the reservoir, you should take the time to check the timing of the spawning ban on fishing. Penalties will not please anyone.
During this period, pike and perch are excellent for spinning, the main thing is to choose the right bait. The most effective, according to fishermen, are:
- small turntables;
- silicone baits with taste and smell;
- small wobblers.
The equipment is made light, but the leash is made more powerful. Pike perch can also be fished with this type of gear.
Fly fishing attracts the attention of asp, which can be found in almost any body of water in the region. This aquatic resident will respond well to artificial flies, dragonflies, and bugs.
The reel will be an important element of the equipment; its power indicators should be high.
As the temperature rises, most of the fish go into the water column; they can only be lured out of there in the early morning or after dawn. On warm summer evenings, catfish fishermen are often found on the shores of many reservoirs. They will come to their places until the fall in the hope of catching a large specimen, and most of them succeed quite well. The bait most often used is live bait caught in the same reservoir, pieces of liver, and rotten meat.
At the end of spring and from the second half of summer, many will be able to boast of trophy carp or carp; they are best caught during this period. To be sure to catch your catch you need to know these tricks:
- choose the right bait;
- use different types of bait, both plant and animal;
- fish already known places.
First you need to feed the carp or grass carp for several days, after 2-3 days they will, by inertia, come to the feeding site and, without suspecting anything, swallow the hook with the bait. There is no point in casting the tackle far during this period; all representatives of this type of fish go to the shallows.
On the paid sites you can enjoy fishing for trout or sturgeon; many farms are engaged in growing sterlet, and catching it is very interesting.
Winter fishing
In winter, there are fewer grass snakes on reservoirs than in summer, but they still exist. I would especially like to note fishing on the first ice, in Karaganda, as in other cities at these latitudes, during this period the fish bite best.
The predator is caught on ice on girders and stands; live bait and small fish from the same reservoir are used as bait.
Roach, crucian carp, and small perches are lured with a jig. Pike and perch will respond well to a vertical lure on a rod; pike perch can also be caught.
The lack of food in reservoirs forces fish in winter to sometimes react to baits that are not typical for them; carp, grass carp, and carp are often fished for using spoons. A baitless jig would also be an excellent option; bloodworms on a hook are offered as a last resort.
How to catch more fish
In order for the fishing to be successful and the catch to please both the fisherman and his loved ones, it is necessary to first find out the following nuances:
- find out the weather conditions for the next few days;
- the phase of the moon is also important for this; experienced fishermen monitor this strictly;
- collect quality gear;
- choose the right and effective baits;
- establish the most successful place for fishing.

Main features of fishing
It is known that every year many reservoirs in the region overflow their banks.
Accordingly, the area occupied by water increases. In shallow water you can find a lot of young fish. Anglers who know this feature always catch live bait, and only then go to depth. Unfortunately, sometimes small lakes appear that are cut off from the main body of water. In the summer, a lot of fish die there. Environmental officials ask fishermen to report such bodies of water. This must be done to preserve the population. Experienced fishing enthusiasts always study news from reservoirs about fishing in the Karaganda region before leaving. They know that the bite can vary greatly depending on weather conditions. So, during heavy rains it is impossible to catch large fish, since they all go to depth.
