It’s probably worth immediately deciding on the main baits for which, in fact, we will choose our spinning rod.

And we will primarily fish with wobblers and topwaters (all surface baits). These include: poppers, walkers, gliders, prop baits, crawlers, as well as various derivatives of these baits. But the main ones for us will not be all of the listed baits, namely poppers, walkers and wobblers. As for the same crawlers, they are not intended for jerk wiring. The basic animation technique for such baits is uniform retrieval with pauses. There is also a certain symbiosis of surface baits, but this is so for general understanding. Now we come to the main characteristics of our spinning rod. Such as length, action, test, weight.

Length is a very important parameter when choosing any spinning rod for any conditions. For jerk wiring, this parameter must be given special attention. If you don't get the length right, you can significantly spoil your fishing pleasure. But you shouldn’t do this; you should get true pleasure from fishing, not discomfort.

I’ll try to describe several options: the first is when the rod is positioned down and the handle is at the same level as the hand; second – the rod is located up; third - the rod can be positioned up, down and in a horizontal position, but the handle is not at the same level as the hand. Now let's look at each of the options...

In the first option, you need a rod with a short handle, because... a long handle will be closer to the bend of the arm and will frankly interfere with wiring. And just after the next jerk, the handle will hit your hand. In general, this twitching technique does not require a long handle;

In the second option, the relatively long handle will not bring any particular inconvenience, although even in the initial position of the rod the handle is at the same level as the hand, but it does not interfere with the retrieve, because jerks are performed in a vertical plane from bottom to top;

In the third option, the rod is positioned so that the handle is at hand. In this case, the handle does not affect the hand in any way during wiring - therefore, as in the second option, a longer handle is also acceptable here, but naturally within reasonable limits.

Still, in any case, short is better than long. Whatever the technique, a short one will suit any, but a long one, alas, will not... Among other things, with a short handle it is more convenient, more maneuverable and lighter. Now let's move on to the fishing conditions...

The length of the rod is directly related to the fishing conditions. In my opinion, the optimal length for fishing from a boat ranges from 1.90 to 2.10 meters. From the shore from 1.90 to 2.30, but I want to immediately note that 2.30 is the maximum that I would not recommend exceeding, otherwise you may lose proper control over the bait.

Action is the type of bending of a rod under load. I think that it is not worth describing in great detail what types of action are divided into, which is preferable for a particular bait, the pros and cons, etc. A lot has been written about this and once again, writing about it makes no sense.

In the previous parameter, we touched on the topic of “failures” of a spinning rod when working with baits... So, the so-called “failures” are, perhaps, primarily applicable to the formation. In order to feel the bait well and control it the way we want, we need a “stick” with a fast or super-fast action, i.e. spinning rod of increased rigidity. Only with such a spinning rod can we set the game as clearly as possible for such baits as poppers, walkers, wobblers, etc. If you want to feel all the subtleties when fishing with jerk fishing and enjoy it, you need to immediately note one rule for yourself - in no case, do not strive for versatility.

If you have never tried using the jerking method before, you will most likely think that you will not lose at all if you take a longer one, but once you try a spinning rod that is truly specialized for twitching, you will understand that before this (with a long spinning rod ) there was only a distant semblance of twitching. In addition, we should not forget that with equal parameters, the longer the spinning rod, the heavier and less sensitive it will be. Can you imagine that a spinning rod designed for twitching will be heavy and insensitive? Of course not! These words contradict the jerk wiring.

The test is the recommended weight of lures designed for a specific spinning rod. As a rule, the manufacturer indicates the lower and upper tests. The lower test means the minimum weight of lures with which the rod will demonstrate good performance when casting and retrieving. The top, respectively, is the maximum weight that the spinning rod can handle. But it is not at all necessary that the test indicated on the form will correspond to reality. And this applies not only to budget models.

In most cases, the real test of a spinning rod is determined on a pond... There are several features that we will now examine. For example: test of our spinning rod 5-20 grams. And here we are standing on the shore, taking out a 15-gram wobbler, being sure that the spinning rod will easily cope with it (after all, the reserve is as much as 5 grams), but in practice it turns out to be completely different, not the way we imagined it. After which a completely predictable question arises, why? The fact is that in addition to the weight of the bait, it is also necessary to take into account such a factor as the resistance of the bait when retrieving. Therefore, when choosing a test, you should not forget about this.
