Features of fishing in Mordovia
The location of the region explains the relief features of the bottom of rivers and lakes. In the reservoirs of Mordovia there are practically no sharp changes, deep holes, or riffles. Rivers and lakes are characterized by gently sloping banks and bottoms, mostly sandstones. Many reservoirs are characterized by turbid water immediately after precipitation, which makes fishing difficult. Over time, the turbidity will settle and the ichthy inhabitants will become significantly more active.
Shallow depths and relatively clean water are typical for rivers and lakes; this, according to experienced fishermen, is the main reason for the lack of trophy catfish in the region.
Fishing is carried out both in natural and artificial reservoirs. Many lakes and ponds have been leased for many years, and this business is thriving. Many bases offer paid fishing services, and even people from neighboring regions come here to enjoy it.
Fishing in Mordovia
Page navigation
The main rivers for fishing in Mordovia are the Moksha with its tributaries Issa, Satis and Sivin, as well as the Sura with its tributaries Rudnya, Alatyr and Insar. More than a hundred small and medium-sized rivers and several hundred lakes are of fishing interest in the region. Addition to this list is a mass of ponds of natural and artificial origin.
The main fishing objects are:
A characteristic feature of reservoirs in Mordovia is considered to be very clean water at relatively shallow depths. Therefore, trophy catfish are extremely rare here. Numerous shallows, coupled with the moderate and slow flow of the local rivers, are ideal conditions for fishing around the clock and all year round. The coastline of the reservoirs is rich in vegetation and picturesque places, which makes it possible to combine fishing with family vacations.
Moksha differs from Sura in its more serious depths (the average is 7-8 meters). There are an abundance of sand spits and deep pools, riffles and shallow reaches. Those who come here are by no means new to the art of fishing, and the river often rewards their experience.
The best places on Moksha are the shores around the city of Temnikov. In this area, the river makes a sharp turn of 90 degrees and, a few kilometers from the city limits, splits into five branches, and this is an ideal environment for the accumulation of fish. The banks of the Moksha near the villages of Kabanovo - Mordovian Poshaty are never empty of fishermen, as well as at the confluence of the Moksha and Issa.
On the Sura, a win-win option would be fishing in the vicinity of the confluence of the Medyanka tributary. Moderate currents at three-four-meter depths with gentle drops are a good environment for burbot, silver bream and ruffe. The second most popular are the surrounding areas of the city of Bolshie Berezniki and the villages of Nikolaevka and Tiyapino. The coastal waters of the Sura near Ivankovka and Kozlovka are recommended for lovers of hunting predators - pike and pike perch.
Another interesting place is Yarylkin backwater. Without exaggeration, this is a “Mecca” for fans of ice fishing. The reservoir is unique in that there are places with depths of up to 10-11 meters, and this is a chance to lift a real trophy both in summer and winter.
Today, the surroundings of Saransk can hardly please real fishermen. Local fishermen recommend looking for luck at a considerable distance from the city outskirts.
Commercial reservoirs are an alternative. Paid fishing in Mordovia is now on the rise, and quantity in this case should develop into quality. Most of the lakes in Mordovia are floodplain. This factor explains their shallow waters and fish species composition, identical to the nearest rivers.
Paid places
Lately, paid fish have become very popular; in Mordovia, many species of fish are bred for this purpose. Carp farms are considered the most common, but there are also people who can fish for trout and crucian carp.
Many people go to the region for a family holiday; renting a house at a fishing base is not difficult. The fisherman will be able to relax his soul on the shore, and his loved ones will be able to admire the local nature and breathe fresh air. Each base has its own prices and additional entertainment for vacationers.

This is interesting: Molodyn: fishing and what kind of fish is found
Sura
The river is considered one of the largest in the region; fishing is carried out on the banks throughout the region, but anglers will achieve the greatest success:
- at the confluence of the Sura and the Medyanka channel;
- in the vicinity of the city of Bolshie Berezniki;
- near the villages of Nikolaevka and Tiyapino;
- predator lovers should go to Kozlovka and Ivankovka;
- Yarilkin backwater will delight everyone.
Fishing is carried out with different types of gear, the most common is spinning fishing, but good success can be achieved with bottom and float gear. Both plant and animal varieties are used as bait. It is advisable to feed the fishing spots, tested by experienced fishermen; the number of bites increases significantly in this case.

Ask a Question
A special feature of Sura are pits up to 12 meters deep; it is from them that trophy specimens of the predator are often taken out. On Sura, many people learn to fish, and both the more experienced fisherman and the beginner will be lucky.
When is fishing in Mordovia
The nature of the reservoirs of Mordovia and the species composition of fish guarantees successful fishing without vacations. However, in order to preserve the fish resources of its reservoirs, the Government of Mordovia annually introduces restrictions for fishermen from April 15 to June 15.
This is primarily due to the spawning season. Restrictions apply to both certain places and fishing gear. During these two months, fishing enthusiasts are allowed to fish with only two gears (rods or spinning rods) with a maximum number of hooks - a pair on each.
At the same time, during the spawning season there is a ban on catching certain types of fish with a minimum size. For information on species and sizes during spawning, see table:
- Carp 40 cm.
- Pike perch 40 cm.
- Bream 25 cm.
- Pike 32 cm.
- Freshwater catfish 90 cm.
- Carp 40 cm.
Ideally, banned prey should be released into the wild with minimal damage. The rest of the time, no one is forbidden to try their luck. So, with the onset of the first frosts, the time for local pike to become active comes.
All winter, without adjusting for temperature, you can become the owner of a collection of pike perch, bersh and perch. With the arrival of spring, the bream awakens. It was after the ice melted on the rivers of Mordovia that there was an influx of fishermen from neighboring regions, obsessed with the desire to test themselves in the dexterity and skill of catching Sur and Mokshen bream.
Moksha
Moksha differs from Sura significantly, the depths here are deeper, and fishing requires not only luck, but also certain skills. Sand spits and whirlpools, rifts and small reaches will allow you to catch truly trophy specimens if you have the appropriate gear.
Often in the summer and into the fall, photos of trophies caught on Moksha appear on the Internet.
River banks near any populated area or far from it are suitable for capture, but the greatest success can usually be achieved:
- near Temnikov, Moksha here makes a sharp turn of 90 degrees, and then splits into several branches, which serve as excellent places for catching various types of fish;
- the banks of Moksha near Kabanovo are never empty;
- The confluence of Moksha and Issa forms the so-called Mordovian Poshaty, famous for a large number of trophy pike.
With a float rod, you can perch in the above places, or you can look for a quieter and more comfortable place.
Moksha River Basin
From the spot indicated in the second chapter, the Moksha River makes huge bends, and inside there are hundreds more loops. Up to the Kolochaev farm, the right bank is steep, the left bank is sandy and low-lying. Below the banks are sloping. Everywhere. Meadows approach water more often than forests. The further course of the Moksha River is very tortuous. For example, in Mordovian Poshaty there is the extreme ledge of the largest (north-eastern) river bow. But the main pool is difficult to distinguish. The middle course of the Moksha River is distinguished by the appearance of even more oxbow lakes. The main river along its entire length can narrow literally to 5 meters in the upper reaches and up to 15 meters in the lower reaches. But even closer to the mouth, the Moksha River basin remains intact. Does not “scatter” into ducts. The thing is that very rarely the water rises high. The basin is deep. Natural extensions are no more than 85 meters (near Krasnoslobodsk). Only in man-made areas the distances between the edges reach 124-144 meters. The final basin of the Moksha River is surrounded on the right and left by huge oxbow lakes. You already know the further behavior of the river. As a result, it is worth noting that the coastal sides are destroyed little. Although the river is flat, it is transparent.
Summer fishing
In the summer, fishing is carried out using different baits and lures, it all depends on the gear used:
- catching a predator on a spinning rod is carried out using jig baits with twisters and rippers; oscillating spinners and spinners work well. Wobblers will attract the attention of pike in spring and autumn, but in summer it will practically not react to them.
- peaceful fish are caught on gear with feeders; worms, maggots, and bloodworms will perform well as bait.
Herbal options are also used, but they will not work as well.
What to catch
3
Of course, every fisherman who is planning to go to these places with a fishing rod is concerned about the catch. What can you catch in the numerous rivers and lakes of the region?
Fishing in the Ryazan region, judging by experts, is very promising. There are more than eighty different species of fish in the waters of local reservoirs. Moreover, thirty of them are commercial. Roach and crucian carp, ide and bream, catfish and sterlet, perch and pike perch, ruffe and pike - all these types of fish are found in the reservoirs of the Ryazan region. Among the predators, pike and burbot, perch and ide can be especially distinguished. They prefer to be caught using spinning rods.
Since the ecological situation in the region is quite positive, there is a good catch of catfish and sterlet. In addition, there are frequent cases of catching river eels and carp. Rare, but still sometimes appearing on fishermen's hooks, fish here are chub and gudgeon, minnow and fishermen, carp and fishermen.
