Catching perch on a donk

The predatory fish, perch, is not known for being cautious or picky, so you can catch it not only with a spinning rod, but also with a simple fishing rod with a float. But for successful fishing with this gear, the absence of wind and current is important, and it is unlikely that you will be able to boast of a large catch with this method of fishing. To catch larger fish even in strong winds and currents, anglers use a perch bottom, which also allows you to cast much further from the shore.

What does donka consist of?

This gear is extremely simple, there is no need to complicate it: you need to use a main line with a thickness of at least 0.3 millimeters, and its length depends on the terrain and fishing method (usually 100 m is enough).

It is necessary to use a rod with an elastic tip in order to notice minor bites.

Hooks are most often used from No. 4 to No. 8.

If frequent false bites are observed, this means that the angler has chosen an area with small or extremely shy fish. To make sure of this, you can choose a smaller hook and use a worm for bait.

Note to anglers! When hunting for perch in currents, you need to use a flat sinker. If the water is calm, the shape of the sinker is not important.

The weight of the sinker must be sufficient to prevent it from being carried away by the current, and it must be attached to a separate leash, the length of which, together with the sinker, should be 20-40 centimeters.

Bottom tackle device

This gear has the simplest device and there is no need to complicate it or use gear with another device:

The thickness of the main line must be at least 0.3 mm, the length is selected based on the fishing method and the distance to the fishing site. Usually 100 meters is enough.

Hooks on a leader usually use a number 4-8. If there are many empty bites, this means that the bait is being thrown into a place with small or very cautious fish. To check this, you need to use smaller hooks and try half a worm as bait.

The sinker is attached to a separate leash; its weight should be such that it will not be carried away by the current. The length of the leash with a sinker is from 20 to 40 cm.

It is best to take a rod with a flexible tip so that you can see weak bites.

How to catch perch on a donka?

Catching perch on a donk means using young fish of peace-loving fish species, which are used as live bait. The predator has a sharp and warlike disposition, so without hesitation he begins an attack on live bait that has attracted his attention. And it is attracted by its activity and the bright color of the live bait.

To catch perch on the bottom with live bait, it is better to use bleak, small crucian carp, gudgeon or roach. The bait must be placed through the upper area of the back near the fin, and to increase its survivability, the hook must be passed through the nostril and its point brought out through the lower jaw.

Feeder equipment for a predator diagram

Donka for perch includes many species, but experienced fishing enthusiasts always choose a jig. They are selected separately, but for muddy water it is better to choose jigs with shine and bright color.

For bait when hunting small fish, you can take maggots, bloodworms, or earthworms.

Important nuances when fishing

Donka is most often used for catching perch from a boat. In this case, choose a shorter rod (up to half a meter), preferably with an inertial reel. When the boat is moving, it is not important to use live bait; you can also take pieces of fish for bait.

When using a donkey for perch, when it comes to fishing with live bait, it is better to use a leash about 40 cm long. It is attached to the main fishing line using a carabiner.

To catch a larger predator on a donkey, it is better to fish at a depth of 3 meters. The fry almost never live so deep, so a large predator will not miss the opportunity to taste a tasty morsel without surfacing.

The attention of a large perch is better attracted by a moving bait, so it is necessary to set it in motion with the end of the fishing rod. By using the active action of the bait, you can significantly increase the chances of a rich catch.

Features of donkey

Usually, when catching perch on a donk, live bait is used - fry from peaceful species of fish. Perch is an aggressive fish and usually attacks live bait that interests it without thinking twice. Especially if the baitfish has bright scales or is active. The following types of fish are suitable for the role of live bait: roach, bleak, gudgeon or small crucian carp.

The bait is attached through the upper part of the back near the fin, but in order for the fry to live longer, the hook is threaded through the nostril and the point is brought out through the lower jaw.

There are many types of gear for bottom fishing, but the most popular among experienced fishermen is the jig. They are selected individually, but if there is good visibility in the water, then in this case you should use dim jigs; if the water is cloudy, then bright and shiny ones will do.

It is important to take into account such subtleties when fishing with a donk:

Often they fish with a donka from a boat, only the length of the rod should be shorter - no more than half a meter and it is desirable that the reel be inertial.

Because If the boat will float, it is not necessary to use live fry; you can attach pieces of fresh fish or crayfish.

When fishing with live bait, you need a longer leash. It is attached to the main fishing line with a carabiner; its length should be approximately 40 centimeters and its thickness should be at least 0.25 mm.

Fishing with a donkey is most effective at great depths - from 3 meters, because... Fry rarely swim there and the perch will not fail to take advantage of the chance to feast on it without surfacing.

Large specimens most often attack moving baits, so it will be better to give it movement with the tip of the fishing rod. Such a game can increase the chance of a bite many times over.

Fishing from the shore

To make the gear, you will need a short spinning rod, a small spinning reel, a fishing line 0.4 mm thick, about 40 m long, with a carabiner at the end.

In the process of assembling the donkey, after threading the fishing line through the rings of the rod, you need to tie an insert from the same fishing line 2 meters long to the carabiner. At the end of the insert you need to attach a weight weighing 30 g.

Above the weight, you need to tie 2 leashes through a carabiner (to avoid twisting the main line and leashes).

The first leash, no more than 5 cm long, must be tied at a distance of 15 cm from the weight, the second leash - 15 cm from the first.

There is no need to use the longest wires, because perch is not such a cautious fish. Moreover, this can lead to difficulties with casting. It is better to choose hooks No. 7.

Now the tackle is ready for use.

Worms, leeches and pieces of fish are used for bait.

If there is enough space, then 3 or more such gear can be used to use a donkey for perch from the shore.

Catching perch on a donk: rod equipment and secrets of big catches

Perch can hardly be called a cautious fish, because delicate, thin tackle is rarely used to fish for it. The basis can be either a thick and “noticeable” fishing line or something smaller in diameter.

Beginner fishermen may think that there are some tricks that experienced fishermen keep in the strictest confidence. In fact, there are no secrets. There are small nuances that it is advisable to know in order to increase the chances of catching fish.

First of all, you should decide on the fishing location; the equipment will depend on this. In fast currents, perch practically does not stand, preferring quieter places. On a medium or small stream, you should use a flat weight - it is more difficult for the current to move it from its place. A round or olive-shaped weight will easily roll under the influence of the current.

In still water, it makes no difference what kind of weight the fishing rod or bottom tackle is equipped with. Use any shape: round, olive, flat. A heavy weight is mounted to the end of the main line. Above, diverter leashes are knitted, in quantities of 2 pieces. The material for the lead is not important; it can be fluorocarbon or monofilament, the main thing is that they should be thinner than the main line.

Perch is not a cautious fish and the diameter of the fishing line on the bottom does not play a decisive role. But you should not use “ropes”. It is enough to take a diameter of 0.2 as a base and leads of 0.10-0.8 mm. This will have a great effect on the striped robber’s bite. Bait as a worm or bloodworm is a great addition. It is also possible to fish with live bait, just catch small things and put them on a hook; we recommend reading the full article, where we described the method in detail. From it you can learn how to easily catch small fish. Place them on hooks (number 5-6) and throw them to the fishing point.

Let's analyze the gear schematically. The photo shows several examples. They were created for clarity; you can make them exactly, or modify them by removing (adding) an element. One diagram has beads and stopper nodes. Their essence is to prevent the leash from getting tangled, but to be able to move freely between the locking nodes. The beads protect the knots from the swivel with the leader. When casting, choking is kept to a minimum.

In the second option, the leashes are tied to the main line without swivels, without the use of stopper knots and beads. A hook equipped in this way is considered a classic and perfectly catches large perch. In the video below you can see how to tie a lead leash to the main line simply, easily, quickly and reliably.

There is also another well-known method of fishing fish from the bottom, it is called a rubber band. The rubber band is not a tackle for targeted catching of perch, but since fishing is done from the depths, and this type of donkey has proven itself, it is worth writing about it. In this version, a fishing rod is not needed; the fishing line, rubber and weight are wound on the reel and casting is done from the shore. There are a lot of variations in making this gear; the video below shows an accessible method. It also uses small feeders, which provide an additional advantage.
