What to use to catch crucian carp in winter
In winter, crucian carp significantly reduce their feeding activity, and one can only hope to catch this kind of trophy in reservoirs with oxygen-saturated water and in ponds that receive warm wastewater from industrial enterprises.
Important! The best bait for crucian carp in winter is a bloodworm broom.
On ice-covered ponds, a combination of bloodworms and maggots, as well as bloodworms and burdock worms, will work. The use of pieces of dung worm for catching is not ignored. The best results are obtained by fishing during prolonged thaws, when crucian carp begin to show at least some feeding activity.
Dough recipe
To prepare the correct dough for crucian carp, you will need a little wheat flour, which is then brewed with boiling water. When the composition becomes sticky, add semolina and cookies (if you want).
To make the dough elastic, lower it into boiling water for a minute or two (it is important to maintain the proportions). The ratio of flour to water should be 1:5. Add sunflower oil (preferably unrefined) and garlic to the dough.
Store-bought bait
Bait manufacturers are trying to select the optimal compositions of feed mixtures that are most attractive to fish.
- Gf Crucian carp is one of the most popular. It has a balanced composition and the ability to choose by color and particle size.
- Traper Sekret is a good solution for summer fishing, has a persistent aroma and provides reliable complementary feeding even in minimal quantities.
- ka is a domestic version, with a different range of ingredients and flavors.
- FishBait is a neutral bait option that works well in spring and autumn.
- Marcel Van Den Eynde Feeder is one of the best options for feeder fishing; it often helps out during periods of low fish activity.

Autumn bait for crucian carp
In September, the fish behave the same way as in summer, so the bait does not change. In October, crucian carp begin to prepare for hibernation and switch to bait of animal origin.
Protein-rich larvae are considered the best autumn bait for crucian carp. They can only compete with the crawler, the red worm and the underleaf.
When cold weather sets in, the fish almost stop biting. She can only be tempted by a bloodworm or a piece of a worm. And so on until the coldest weather.
Crucian carp and its preferences
Fish respond favorably to baits and lures, which fishermen have conventionally divided into two large groups.
The best baits for crucian carp of animal origin
Depending on weather conditions and the fishing season, crucian carp may be inclined to an animal or plant diet. It’s difficult to guess, so when fishing for crucian carp you should take bait of different origins.
Among animal baits he prefers:
- earthworm;
- earthworm;
- crawling out;
- dung worm;
- bark beetle;
- maggot;
- May beetle;
- dragonfly larvae.
Bait can be given to crucian carp either individually or in the form of a sandwich. However, sometimes a capricious fish can ignore live bait, feeding on insects floating on the surface of the reservoir.
Plant based baits
In some reservoirs, crucian carp prefer such baits even more than animal baits. Of the plant baits this fish likes the most:
- Porridge (semolina, oatmeal, hominy).
- Dough based on semolina, corn, rye or wheat flour with the addition of flavors and various flavoring additives.
- Chatterbox.
- Dough based on dry mixes.
- Protein dough.
- Boiled or steamed legumes and grains (lupine, peas, corn, barley, millet, wheat, pearl barley).
- Canned corn and peas.
- Boilies for crucian carp.
Dill, anise, honey, valerian, and garlic can be used as odorous baits. However, they should be added to baits with great care so as not to scare away suspicious fish.
How to make bait for carp at home
Each fisherman has his own treasured feeding recipes. They differ in composition and working qualities, but the basic rules for preparing bait remain the same:
- The basis of any bait is cereal ingredients or cereals. Carp also loves peas, corn, and oats.
- Fine components should be used in mixtures. They create dust in the water and do not allow the fish to get enough.
- Carp loves aromatic food, so the use of flavorings and attractants is mandatory.
- You should add components similar to the bait used in the feed.
All ingredients must be fresh. They are prepared in the evening and mixed in the morning at the pond.
Recipe for the feeder
The simplest recipe:
- Soak peas and pearl barley in a 2:1 ratio in water for several hours. Then boil them over medium heat.
- Cook millet and corn porridge in a 1:1 ratio in another pan.
- We pre-soak a kilogram of wheat for 12 hours, and then also cook it in a separate bowl.
- Mix all the cooked cereals in one container.
Arriving at the pond, add flavorings and breadcrumbs. You can use pellets or a store-bought mixture.
Complementary foods for different seasons
Depending on the time of year, the composition of carp bait changes. The preferences of fish are influenced by weather, water temperature, and food supply. These factors must be taken into account when preparing for your upcoming fishing trip. Experienced carp fishermen use different food recipes.
For spring
The task of spring bait comes down to awakening the appetite of passive fish, forcing it to approach the feeding point and take the bait. A mixture of available ingredients works well:
- In a 1:1 ratio, pour peas, corn porridge, wheat and millet into a saucepan with boiling water.
- Cook until done, stirring constantly.
- At the end of cooking, add 150–200 grams of sugar to the resulting porridge, cover with a lid and leave to cool.
- At the pond, add some aromatic black bread and garlic to the mixture.
- We use cake or semolina as a leavening agent.

Since in spring carp needs an increased amount of protein, we add bloodworms or finely chopped worms to the bait.
For summer
In summer, the “big guy” often goes out into shallow water, stays in the upper horizon, and prefers sweet smells. For carp fishing in the summer, a mixture recipe that has worked well, which even a novice angler can implement:
- Mix egg powder, soy flour and milk powder in a ratio of 1:2:3.
- Add breadcrumbs to the mixture.
- We use sugar and honey and a little cinnamon as flavorings and sweeteners.
We finally prepare the bait on the shore.
For autumn
In autumn, the requirements for carp bait are similar to those in spring. Carp needs an increased amount of protein, is often passive, feeds on exits, stays at medium and great depths, and moves little. A good recipe that experienced anglers like:
- Pour boiling water over the pearl barley and let it brew for about two hours.
- Mix bran, raisins, chopped peanuts, honey and also pour boiling water for half an hour.
- At the pond, add a pinch of bloodworms or chopped worms to the complementary food.
It is advisable to add a little soil to the mixture. We take water directly from the reservoir.
For winter
Bait for catching carp in winter should not be greasy. It is based on animal components and soil. The simplest way to prepare the mixture:
- Mix the soil with bloodworms and chopped worms.
- Add breadcrumbs or milk powder.
- It is useful to add hemp, flax or poppy seeds.
In the cold season, you should not get carried away with attractants, so as not to scare the fish away from the fishing zone.
What bait does crucian carp bite on in the fall?
With the cooling of the water starting at the end of August, the favorite summer bait of the plant type fades into the background, transferring the advantages to animal baits. Now the dung worm is revealing its full potential. By pressing down the tail of the worm, anglers achieve solid catches with a continuous bite throughout the daylight hours. The crucian fishermen use bloodworms and maggots.
Important! The worse and colder the weather becomes, the smaller the size of baits used in installations.
So the worm is torn into pieces, and in some cases even one bloodworm is used as a bait.

Used gear and carp equipment, nozzles
Now, as for the gear. Regular carp rods are used, 3.6-3.9 meters long, with a main line of 0.35-0.4mm. You can use 0.2mm braid as leashes. Carp hooks according to international classification 2-3 with a short shank. Fishing takes place in a closed reservoir in which there is no current, which means that a sinker of 30-40 grams is enough.
Since we have a limited number of hooks, you can use such a trick as a diverting rocker with 20-30cm leashes attached to them. The outlet rocker arms must be secured between the beads and have free movement.
Solid groundbait particles are used as bait, that is, corn, cut boilies, pearl barley, etc. The bait must be large so that only carp can swallow it.
How far should you throw bait?
It is worth taking into account the depth of the reservoir, if 10 meters from the shore the depth is 1.5-2 meters and the bottom is clean you can safely cast. Since most people fish for carp with bottom gear, for two hooks with a radius of 10 meters, spreading bait is quite enough. All types of bait are thrown into the same places.
That is, we need a kind of sultana at the bottom. Why only for 2 bottom gears? Given the nature of the fish, you should not use more hooks. Since when fishing, nearby gear can become entangled with each other when the hooked carp begins to “fool”.
