Winter fishing features

The Northern Dvina River is one of the largest bodies of water in the European part of Russia. Fishing here, according to reviews, can vary significantly in different places and at different times of the year. Most lovers of a calm atmosphere come here in the summer. But adherents of active recreation try to get to the Arkhangelsk region in winter.

Hunting and fishing on the Northern Dvina in January are characterized by unique excitement and great interest. The best time of year to catch predatory fish. Its diversity is very high in the tributaries and estuaries of the river. The best option for such fishing is the use of spoons and bottom fishing rods. If you want to get a big catch in January, then reviews recommend choosing a place with warm water, since most predators prefer to be in such conditions.

Fishing on the Northern Dvina River in winter, spring, summer, autumn

Fishing on the Northern Dvina River in Arkhangelsk and Vologda, what you need to know. This is a large river in Russia, and navigation is possible along its entire length. It has a lot of tributaries, most of which are located in the Arkhangelsk region, the mouth is also located here. In the Vologda region, the river is relatively shallow, there are many shallows, rapids, riffles, and the bottom is sandy. The further downstream, the depth increases, and the current becomes calmer. The greatest depths of up to 24 meters are in the Arkhangelsk region; in some places there is no current at all. The city of Arkhangelsk is located on the banks of this particular river.

Fishing on the Northern Dvina is especially popular in the Arkhangelsk region, because the city itself is located on it. Below Arkhangelsk, the river is strongly divided into several branches, forming dozens of islands, and then all these branches flow into the White Sea, forming a wide floodplain. The species composition of fish is very large, there are both freshwater and sea fish: ide, pike, perch, roach, sterlet, burbot, asp, crucian carp, salmon, grayling, navaga, smelt, flounder, and others. Salmon species come from the sea to spawn, which then spread up the tributaries of the Northern Dvina.

Fishing on the Northern Dvina with a spinning rod is one of the most popular in spring, summer, and autumn. The following fish can bite: perch, pike, grayling, pike perch, ide, asp, salmon. Fishing is possible both from the shore and from a boat.

Fishing for pike with a spinning rod has proven itself well in the middle and lower riverbeds; very large specimens are caught here. Trophy pike are found mainly at depths of 3-8 meters, and are difficult to catch from the shore. Therefore, it is better to have a boat with a motor and an echo sounder. You need to fish with jig baits using not very heavy loads. The length of the lures is 3-5 inches, mostly silicone vibrotail type. Shore fishing is done with spinner spoons, less often with spoons. But the size of the pike is relatively small.

Perch is distributed throughout the river from the mouth to the upper reaches, and is the most popular fish among shore spinners. This fish is found here in large quantities, and quite large specimens weighing more than 1 kg are caught. The main spinning baits: spinner spoons No. 1 No. 2 No. 3, wobblers 4-8 cm, and small silicone.

Ide is caught both with spinning rods and bottom rods with worms.

It is better to look for grayling in the middle and upper reaches, as well as in tributaries. It is distributed throughout the river, but there are places where its concentration is significant, and there it readily bites on a float rod. Where the bait is an insect or an artificial fly.

Feeder (bottom) fishing on the Northern Dvina is also popular; there are a lot of bream and roaches here that readily come for bait. The bait is mainly maggots and worms. In addition to roach and bream, absolutely any fish can bite on bottom (feeder) rods.

Fishing during the thaw

February and March are the best months for burbot fishing. Fishing during this period will be exciting in its own way, but the problem of making an ice hole may discourage novice fishermen from such an activity. If you do not want to bother with the drill, it is recommended to wait until it thaws. As soon as the ice melts a little, underwater predators will go in search of food, which will allow them to get the maximum catch. At this time of year you should step on the ice with great caution, as its strength can often be deceptive.

If the water does not completely melt before April, then moving on thin ice is strictly prohibited. Unfortunately, there are many examples of the death of inexperienced fishermen as a result of careless fishing in the spring. However, if you do not neglect safety rules, then April fishing will bring you the greatest catch. After hibernation, the fish are quite hungry, so they will gladly swallow almost any bait. It is best to use a regular float rod or spinning rod for such fishing.

Fishing for navaga

If you want to catch navaga, fishing on the Northern Dvina is recommended in early May. For this purpose, it is best to use a boat, since even a professional fisherman is unlikely to be able to catch fish from the shore. Raw meat or pieces of fish are ideal as bait. After casting your fishing rod, constantly play with the line, since this type of fish bites best on a moving bait. If you set the optimal pace, you will achieve the best results. Remember that large specimens of navaga bite quite strongly and sharply, so under no circumstances let go of the fishing rod. You need to hook the fish as quickly as possible, otherwise it will go to depth.

Bream hunting

Fishing for bream in April on the Northern Dvina can give quite good results, but if you want to catch a truly trophy species, you will have to put in a lot of effort. It is necessary to constantly move along the river, since bream rarely stays in one place for a long time. The best places to cast a fishing rod will be tributaries and river mouths. A float or feeder fishing rod is used as gear. The best bait is a regular dung worm. The period of active biting does not last long - about two weeks, so you need to catch the bream as quickly as possible.

Fishing for crucian carp

The Northern Dvina attracts fishermen from all over Russia with fairly large varieties of crucian carp. The best time to catch this type of fish is in the last week of May. At this time of year, you can catch individuals whose weight ranges from 1.5 to 2 kilograms. Schools of crucian carp constantly move between the tributaries of the river, so you should look for them along the river. Once you find a cool spot, be sure to use some kind of bait to keep the fish in one place. Maggot, worm or corn are suitable as bait. Crucian carp is caught using a regular float rod with a line thickness of at least 0.4 millimeters.

Pike hunting

This toothy predator is the favorite prey of any fisherman. The best places for pike fishing on the Northern Dvina are the tributaries of the river. The largest species are found in the channel parts of tributaries. Some individuals reach one and a half sizes in length, but catching such a trophy is very rare. The best bait for summer pike fishing is an earthworm or dung worm. You can also use small pike, the weight of which does not exceed 400 grams. And as gear for summer pike hunting, reviews recommend getting a good spinning rod that can withstand large fish.

Where is recreational fishing prohibited?

Perch fishing

This predator can reach quite large sizes, especially in the summer. Pulling an individual weighing more than 1 kilogram out of the water is not an easy task. The perch will actively resist until it is exhausted. In this regard, it is recommended to use strong tackle that can withstand the resistance of the fish. Suitable baits include worms, bloodworms, pieces of meat and fish, and most imitation baits: wobblers, spoons, and so on. Also remember that perch is a schooling fish. If you find a large school, then a truly rich catch awaits you.

Salmon fishing

This type of fish has always attracted anglers, because the process of catching it is truly exciting and exciting, and the trophy qualities of even the smallest specimens continue to be at their best. A part of the river with a fast and changeable current, the banks of which are littered with cobblestones, is suitable for fishing. Salmon is considered a fairly strong fish, so to catch it you will have to use a good spinning rod. The tackle should be thrown in the direction of the current at approximately an angle of 45°. An ordinary worm or maggot is suitable as bait.

Fishing on the Nikolsky sleeve

Winter fishing on the Nikolsky branch of the Northern Dvina annually attracts professionals and amateurs from all over Russia to this place. People gather on the ice in large groups in order to catch large pike, perch or roach. For this purpose, it is best to use bottom fishing rods, and bloodworms or an ordinary worm will serve well as bait.

Although the relevance of such fishing in the winter season does not mean at all that there is nothing to do here in spring or summer. Here you can also catch quite large specimens of grayling, ide, silver bream, burbot and bream. Bread crumb, corn, pearl barley and other cereals are used for bait. It is best to fish from a boat, as they prefer to settle at depth. This is best done at dawn or sunset.

Fishing in Kotlas

Fishing in Kotlas on the Northern Dvina is considered a rather promising activity. There are a large number of meadow islands and shallows that can be used to cast a fishing rod. It is preferable to use a spinning rod or donka as gear. Any simulator is suitable for bait.

Winter fishing is also quite popular in the region. The water here freezes quite quickly due to the weak current and shallow depth. For winter fishing, it is best to use bottom tackle. You can catch quite large specimens of perch, roach, pike and burbot using bloodworms, according to reviews.

Fishing in Arkhangelsk

If you are still looking for a cool place, then you should go fishing on the Northern Dvina, in Arkhangelsk. There are quite a lot of fishing spots in this region, where fishermen come not only from Yekaterinburg, but also from all over Russia. Perhaps this popularity is due to the excellent bite, or perhaps to the picturesque landscapes. Here you can catch perch, whitefish, pike, and ruff without any problems.

In the region you can find several forest lakes that are rich in various fish. There are no ebbs and flows here, and a good bite is observed throughout the day in any weather. Among fishermen, the small lake Smerdye is most famous. Here you can catch perch, whitefish, roach and other fish.

Fishing enthusiasts often visit the White Sea. Despite the good bite, the overall picture is spoiled by harsh weather conditions in this region. In winter, strong winds constantly blow here and there are severe frosts, and there are also ebbs and flows. All these features make fishing very problematic, but this is not a hindrance for experienced anglers. In addition, you can come to the White Sea by your own car, which is a definite advantage compared to forest lakes.

Daily catch rate of aquatic biological resources

When carrying out recreational fishing in relation to types of aquatic biological resources that are not prohibited from catch, a daily norm for catching aquatic biological resources (quantity, weight) of a certain type is established, allowed for a citizen to harvest, which should not exceed:

a) when carrying out recreational fishing on a voucher - the amount (weight) of aquatic biological resources established for the extraction (catch) of aquatic biological resources in the voucher;

b) when carrying out recreational fishing without a permit - the quantity (weight) of aquatic biological resources established in the table, but not more than one copy, if its weight exceeds the daily norm established for this type of aquatic biological resources.

Brown trout (all forms of the species) 10 kg
Loaches (all forms of the species, with the exception of Arctic migratory ones) 10 kg
Whitefish (all forms of the species) 10 kg
Grayling 10 kg
Bream (residential form) 10 kg
Pike 15 kg
Every other species of fish, with the exception of brown trout (all forms of the species), char (all forms of the species, with the exception of arctic migratory species), whitefish (all forms of the species), bream (residential form), pike, freshwater perch, roach, burbot , freshwater ruffe 15 kg

The total daily rate of production (catch) in the inland waters of the Russian Federation, with the exception of the inland sea waters of the Russian Federation, for all types of aquatic biological resources not listed in the table is no more than 25 kg or one specimen if its weight exceeds 25 kg. If the total daily norm is exceeded, the extraction of aquatic biological resources is stopped.

The collection of algae, sea grasses and aquatic invertebrates from storm emissions is not prohibited or restricted.

Interesting things about fishing

The Northern Dvina was formed as a result of the confluence of two rivers – the Sukhona and the Yuga. It flows into the Dvina Bay of the White Sea. Therefore, marine life often swims into the reservoir, especially near the mouth of the river. A prime example is sea bass.

The strength of the current in the lower reaches depends almost entirely on the frequency of the tides. The depth in these places may vary at different times of the year. Therefore, if you decide to go fishing in the Arkhangelsk region, it is recommended to take several gear with you at once: a spinning rod, a donkey and a regular float rod. This approach will be the most practical.

To increase the intensity of bites, it is recommended to use fertilizers with pheromones or bite activators. Unfortunately, the latter may be banned in the near future, but they are still relevant in 2021.

In the waters of the Northern Dvina with the arrival of autumn you can catch a large number of bleak. To do this, you need to use regular tackle without a float with several hooks evenly tied along the entire length of the fishing line. Maggot is perfect as bait. We cast the fishing rod and wait about two minutes. After this time, several small fish will be on the hooks at once. In just a couple of hours of such fishing, you can catch a whole bucket of bleak, which is highly valued on the market, especially when smoked.

When is the extraction of aquatic biological resources prohibited?

  • from May 10 to June 10 - White Sea herring in the Onega Bay within the borders of the Arkhangelsk region, including the three-kilometer coastal zone of the Solovetsky Islands and Zhizhgin Island;
  • from August 10 to October 10 - by catching, straining and stationary fishing gear (catch) along the coast of the Onega, Dvina, Mezen bays and the White Sea Throat within the borders of the Arkhangelsk region, with the exception of mining (catch) of White Sea herring, Asian smelt, navaga;
  • catching, straining and stationary fishing gear in freshwater bodies of fishery importance in the Arkhangelsk region:

a) from April 25 to June 8 - within the borders of Kargopol, Nyandoma, Konoshsky, Velsky, Ustyansky, Shenkursky, Verkhnetoyemsky, Kotlassky, Krasnoborsky, Vilegodsky, Lensky districts;

b) from May 1 to June 14 - within the boundaries of Plesetsk (including within the city of Mirny), Onega, Vinogradovsky, Kholmogorsky, Primorsky (including within the cities of Arkhangelsk, Novodvinsk, Severodvinsk), Pinezhsky districts;

c) from May 15 to June 28 - within the boundaries of Leshukonsky and Mezensky districts;

  • from the beginning of the freeze-up period until the ice melted and in the period from August 10 to October 10 - with nets in the Onega and Mezen rivers with their tributaries in the Northern Dvina and Vychegda rivers;
  • from October 1 until the ice melts - in wintering pits on the Northern Dvina and Vychegda rivers in accordance with Appendix No. 4 to the Fishing Rules “List of wintering pits on the territory of the Arkhangelsk region.”
