How to choose a landing net
Before you buy a landing net, you need to decide on its shape and size, and for this you need to proceed from what kind of fish and in what conditions you will catch.
All landing nets differ in the size of the head (rim), the shape of the rim, the depth of the mesh, the size of the cell, the length of the handle, and the material of the handle. Now let’s look at these elements of the landing net in more detail.
It is worth noting that you can purchase landing nets either ready-made or take the landing net head and handle separately, which is very convenient. The head of a landing net is usually called a rim with a net.
How to choose a landing net taking into account the above parameters
When it comes to renting, the choice of gear depends on the place of future fishing, the size of the fish living there and the difficulty of fishing, taking into account the vegetation or the height of the platform. Here you just choose a more suitable, light landing net.
But if we are talking about buying, then you need to think about what types of landing net there are and what parameters it should have so that it is as useful as possible in different situations.
Head (rim)
First of all, you need to decide on the head of the landing net, as the rim with the net is usually called. A large tool is not always necessary; here you need to rely on versatility and ease of movement. It is very convenient when the head is not completely separated from the handle, and the small handle remaining with the rim is very mobile; at any moment there is an opportunity to hook the fish at a short distance.

The depth of the landing net depends on the size of the potential catch. Fish species such as carp, pike and silver carp require a very strong net, with a deep net and a large mesh made of strong thread. The landing net for pike should also be made of wear-resistant net. The strength of the handle is also important, since no one wants to be left without a catch, not to mention broken tackle.
For less impressive fish, a shallow net with a small mesh is suitable. For this purpose, there are landing nets even with silicone nets; their soft structure does not injure the fish, this is especially true when fishing for trout.
By choosing an average mesh size and depth, you can extract maximum utility and functionality from your fishing gear.

It should be understood that the larger the landing net, the more weight it must withstand. The rim of the landing net varies from 30 centimeters to 1 meter in diameter. The design features determine the weakest point, this is the place where the rim with the handle is attached; it is this place that needs to be given special attention when choosing. Backlashes and visible defects are not allowed, since in future use this particular place will remind of itself.
The shape of the rim can be different, it is believed that for small-sized fish a round shape is ideal, but for medium-sized and large-sized fish, a square or triangular head is preferable.

A handle is nothing more than a simple stick, but for greater convenience, there are many types of handles, from the most ordinary, solid ones, to folding handles, sometimes even the entire landing net is a complex mechanism that folds out into a ready-made tackle. A folding landing net does not take up much space in a backpack or fishing bag. But almost always, these are small tackles with a small handle.
The length of the handle varies from 0.5 to 5 meters, but the longer the handle, the correspondingly more inconvenient it is and problems begin to arise with use, although it allows you to take fish from a longer distance.
Long handles are usually used on steep banks and on high platforms. Accordingly, such a landing net cannot be taken into a boat and it will be inconvenient for wading fishing; short handles have their place here. The telescopic landing net is considered the most useful since it is possible to adjust the length of the handle and successfully use it both on the shore and in the boat.
You also need to pay attention to the thickness of the handle, since a handle that is too thick will not allow you to hold firmly when handling large fish. Thin, therefore, will lose in strength. The best option is a handle with a diameter of about 3 centimeters, when you wrap your hand around the hand, the phalanges of the thumb and index finger overlap each other. You can hold this handle for a long time without getting tired.

For the manufacture of landing net handles, of course, the lightest materials are used, such as:

- Carbon fiber
- Composite materials
Aluminum handles are quite inexpensive, their strength corresponds to their weight, the thicker the walls of the handle, the stronger it is. A landing net with a long aluminum handle will be excessively heavy, your hand will get tired very quickly, and will discourage you from using the tackle.
Carbon fiber handles are lightweight and very comfortable, but have a significant drawback: they are fragile and it is quite difficult to repair a damaged handle.
Handles made of composite materials are considered the most expensive, as they have increased strength with very little weight. The same materials are used in the production of expensive sports cars.
It’s also not that difficult to make a landing net with your own hands, if you always want to work with your hands, everything will work out. In order to make such a tackle, you don’t need much!
As a child, I personally built something like this myself. Although for the rim, a thick steel wire was taken, with an old fine mesh from a string bag, all this was attached to a part of a bamboo fishing rod, with a good layer of electrical tape. It all looked vaguely reminiscent of what we looked at in the article, but my landing net worked amazingly, making me happy.

The heaviest load in it falls on the attachment point with the handle, therefore, the attachment must be reliable, without unnecessary play.
Some landing nets have a rim that can be folded, making it more portable but less durable.
The rim shape is round, square and triangular. For small fish, round is preferable, and for medium and large fish, triangular and square are preferable.

Most often, handles are made of aluminum, carbon fiber, and composite. The most inexpensive ones are aluminum, have good strength, but are heavy, that is, for active fishing they can be excessively heavy. Carbon fiber handles are lighter and more agile, but much more expensive and more fragile.

The handles are also non-folding and folding, the latter are easy to transport, but less durable. Folding models can consist of two or more separate parts using a plug-in method, or simply be telescopic, like a fishing rod.
Tips for choosing
When purchasing a refill, it is important to pay attention to several characteristics that an easy-to-use and practical product must meet. The most reliable are solutions with stationary or plug-in rubberized handles made of carbon fiber. When fishing from a cliff, it is better to give preference to nets with a length of at least 4 m, and for wading fishing a landing net with a handle of up to 2 m is suitable.
To feed large fish, experienced fishermen recommend taking a closer look at carp landing nets. They are distinguished by their great length and massiveness. When catching trout, bream and other types of fish from a boat, preference is given to small nets with a mesh of fishing line and a long solid or plug-in handle 1–2 m with a minimum number of connections. For small fish, the right solution would be to choose lightweight nets. Budget, but at the same time high-quality products are offered by the Polish manufacturer Salmo or domestic.
Before purchasing folding products, you should check all joints. Backlashes, creaks and other extraneous noises are unacceptable - all this will indicate low-quality fishing equipment that will not last long. You also need to inspect the junction of the rim with the handle, since under loads this is what most often breaks. It is recommended not to purchase a net with a small thread diameter on a thin aluminum tube. Nets with reinforced plug connections have proven themselves among fishermen.
Important! In order for a net to last a long time, it is important not only to choose it correctly, but also to follow the care recommendations. The landing net should be washed after each use with fresh water, dried thoroughly and only then stored in a bag or case.

Pike landing net
To catch large predators, and even more so pike, stronger and deeper landing nets made of thick fishing line with a large mesh are used. A triangular rim shape would be more preferable.
In spinning fishing, landing nets with a nylon mesh should not be used, since the tees of wobblers, spinners and other baits will constantly cling to the fibers of the nylon, which is very inconvenient.
To receive large pike, from 5 kg or more, a mesh with a cell of 3-5 cm is considered optimal.
