Jigs for crucian carp on a side nod: equipment

Not everyone knows that there is such an original version of crucian carp fishing as fishing with a fishing rod with a side nod. It involves the use of a rod 5-7 m long, at the end of which a nod is attached, and a jig is used as bait. Thus, this fishing is close to fishing with a jig from ice. The difference is that a fishing rod with a side nod is used to fish in open water. Another name for this fishing is summer jig. The nod is called a side nod because it is located perpendicular to the rod and looks to the side. In this position, it is easiest for the fisherman to track bites. Fishing with such gear is interesting, dynamic and brings good catches. Therefore, catching crucian carp on a fishing rod with a side nod is definitely worth trying at least once. There is a high chance that after this you will become her fan forever.

Advantages and disadvantages of catching crucian carp with a side nod

Typically, a summer jig involves walking fishing - constant movement around a reservoir and searching for active fish. But you can fish in one place.

A fishing rod with a side nod has significant advantages over other gear:

  1. It involves, first of all, fairly dynamic fishing with frequent movements. Thus, this tackle is ideal for those who do not like to sit in one place.
  2. You can fish with a summer jig in almost any place. Including where it is impossible to throw more conventional float and bottom gear. The main thing is that you can get to these points.
  3. Summer jig brings very good catches. If you know how to use a fishing rod with a side nod, you will have every chance of catching colleagues armed with other gear.

The summer jig has no disadvantages as such. But this type of fishing is inferior to fishing with float or bottom fishing rods in the sense that the bait can only be cast the length of the rod.
Another point is that in order to play with a jig, you have to hold the fishing rod in your hands throughout the entire fishing trip. This can be quite tiring, especially if the tackle is heavy. Reference. In addition to crucian carp, you can catch many other fish using tackle with a side nod. Most often it is perch. But nothing prevents you from catching roach, ide, rudd and other inhabitants of water bodies in this way.

Catching crucian carp with a nod and a jig

I know of two ways to catch crucian carp with a jig - passive and active.

The name of the passive method speaks for itself - during the entire period of catching crucian carp, we do without controlling the jig with a tackle with an indicator float or a side nod, which is constantly in passive mode.

To do this, simply place the fishing rod with the nozzle on the jig on a stand or ragulka.

Usually, in a passive way, crucian carp are caught with a jig using several long plugs, placing them in a fan in front of you.

In the summer, crucian carp are caught passively using a jig, usually from the shore, although no one is stopping us from throwing the rigs of a pair of float rods with jigs into a promising fishing spot from a boat.

With the passive method of catching crucian carp with a jig, the rigs of float rods are more or less similar. All of them involve the use of a certain length of rods.

Tackle for catching crucian carp on a side nod

Rod

For catching crucian carp on a fishing rod with a side nod, a rod 6 m long is best suited. This is the most versatile option. Gears with a length of 5 m and 7 m are also often used. The disadvantage of the first is that they are too short, and the second is that they are heavy.

The rod must be equipped with guides. It is important that it is tough and not “noodle-like”. In this case, it will be convenient to carry out the correct wiring of the jig.

Coil

Almost any reel can be used. It is used only as a fishing line storage and usually does not take part in fishing. The best choice would be a small inertial reel - simply because it weighs the least, which means its use will make the tackle lighter.

Nod

You can buy a side nod in a store or make it yourself.

A simple option for making and mounting it yourself:

  1. you need to take a suitable material - for example, a plastic tie (strips cut from plastic bottles are often used), the optimal length is 20-25 cm;
  2. make two rings out of wire and tape them with electrical tape to the center and to the tip of the guard;
  3. make a corner out of wire and also use electrical tape to attach one side of it to the rod and the other to the guard.

You can add heat shrink tubing over the electrical tape.

During the manufacturing process, we must not forget that the guard should be clearly visible. Everyone solves this problem in their own way:

  • it can be painted;
  • wrap with bright colored electrical tape;
  • Another option is to place a small foam cube or ball at the end of the gatehouse.

This video shows how to make a side nod with your own hands:

fishing line

It is best to use monofilament as the main line. It will stretch and absorb the jerks of the fish. When fishing at such a small (minimum) distance, stretching the line will not cause any problems.

Suitable main line diameters are 0.14-0.20 or even 0.25 mm. The larger the crucian carp and the more active it is, the thicker the thread should be. Also, the diameter should be increased when fishing among grass or snags. The leader can be made from monofilament or fluorocarbon with a breaking load 20-25% less than that of the main line.

Selection of baits for fishing

The most catchy bait option for fishing with gear with a guard in the summer is a jig with bait. But you can fish without a natural bait on the hook.

Jigs

Jigs are used larger than in winter. If the body of the bait is elongated, its length can be from 0.5 cm to 1.5 cm, depending on the size of the expected trophies. Most often these are models with a body size of about 0.7 cm.

Good for summer fishing:

  • drops;
  • ants;
  • boats.

Extended baits will be the best choice.

Baits

Among the animal baits you can use as a bait for the jig:

  • bloodworm;
  • maggot;
  • dung or earthworm.

The first two baits attract crucian carp better.

Choosing the time and place for catching crucian carp with a side nod

You can hunt for crucian carp with a summer jig throughout the open water season. But this method is best suited for the second half of spring and summer. In the fall, if the fish has already moved far from the shore, catching it with a summer jig will not be so convenient.

You can start catching crucian carp with a side nod immediately after the ice has cleared from the reservoirs. But it is preferable to wait until the second half of spring, late April-early May, when the water warms up well. You can navigate by the average daily air temperature: it should be at least +15 degrees.

You can catch crucian carp with a fishing rod with a side nod wherever this fish is found. This type of tackle is better suited for still water. But you can also fish in the current. Most often, a fishing rod with a side nod is used to catch fish at small and medium depths. It is less suitable for fishing in pits.

Interesting points where you can very successfully catch crucian carp using a fishing rod with a side nod:

  • algae thickets;
  • snags;
  • bottom irregularities - edges, pit boundaries, “navels”.

Most often they fish in and near seaweed thickets. The most important advantage of fishing with a jig on a rod with a side nod is that you can cast the equipment almost into the thick of the grass. It consists only of a bait tied to a leash, and therefore is almost tangle-free. But more often they are caught in windows, at least small ones, and on the borders of thickets.

So, more than anything else. Everything has become clearer here. And there are also live crucian carp in the water, the bites of which kill anyone. Near the water where I fish rocks there are white and yellow ones, but it’s hard to be evil. I am a fan of fishing with fragrant dough and maggot. It bites on the dough so much that you don’t want to put wood on it, but it’s not so on the sponge. The biggest bite on the fragrant dough is the yellow crucian carp, which is based on 200-250 grams. I’m talking about the main thing: in order to make the yellow fish angry, you need to sweat. This is how it bites - to crush and then drown the float. Don't be a fool, the crucian carp pulled off the paste. In order to get out of the situation, I created a float, which itself hooks the fish - any kind. Denis Zatserklyany Dear man, I watch your videos very often, everything is great and you are a sincere and good person. I have one question for you about the side nod tackle. How exactly do you cast this tackle, and especially in the reeds? As I understand it, casting doesn’t work here like on a regular float rod, but simply lowers the length of the rod, I just noticed that when fishing for fish, you always throw off the fishing line. Sorry for the inexperienced and correct question, but this gear is simply not familiar to me yet. I will be very grateful for your answer. Health and Rvbat happiness to you

Iogan Grozny Why not 5.8 but rather 4.8? Based on my experience of fishing with a wide rod (in our region this is the name for fishing in the reeds of crucian carp and crucian carp, a very accurate definition in my opinion) it is preferable to have a length of 5.8 rather than 4.8, although we are talking about float equipment and the difference of 120g between the rods probably has significant importance, because the nodding rig requires constant control of the rod. Mikhalych would like to hear your opinion on this matter, how to find a middle ground and not step on a rake for those who want to switch from a float to a nod.

Storm Fidget As I understand it, the meaning of the video is an advertisement for gear. Probably the author is an interested person, but this is his business - he decided to earn extra money. Everything is much simpler for me (a beginner), but the results are also pleasing, I agree with the author of the video, it’s worth doing. Here in the bushes I’m afraid of flattery in the wilds - it’s a pity for the gear (it seems that the author really has unlimited credit in gear.

Mikado Mikhalych Krasava There is probably no one else on this lake who knows how to fish with a nod, but Mikhalych is always with a fish) By the way, Mikhalych, yesterday a crow on its tail brought strange news that in Salivonki a large crucian carp has already gone to feed. There he always started taking it before everyone else, but it’s already something too early. Haven’t you heard anything about it?

Roma Chaban Cool fishing, very interesting videos and a lot of educational information in them, especially in winter on the river. yu Bug comes from Vinnitsa, 25 km from the place where you fished, but in winter it was a shock. Alexey Kalashnikov good afternoon Mikhalych Will crucian carp take maggots in the reeds? The problem with bloodworms is very minor. Today I assembled a fishing rod similar to yours, a lovsan nod to find the problem, barely found it. I plan to go fishing tomorrow. Thank you so much for the video, I enjoy watching it.

Pavel Efremov Mikhalych, in such weather there is not much fishing with other tackle. I was also on Sunday at a paid site, where, in fact, there should always be a bite, but we didn’t catch anything, and neither did most of the fishermen, and those who caught no more than 2-3 fish.

Sergey Trubnik Mikhalych, thanks for the video, about cheap fishing rods, I gave my father-in-law Mikado Princesses, it weighs from 140 to 200 grams, it works like my drives and black holes. in stores 1500 2000 rubles, and for the Vietnamese 700 rubles wholesale, 900 rubles retail. now my father-in-law has 4 of them,

Vasya Pupkovsky Tell me, why can’t you take a fishing rod with a thin, sensitive tip and lower the jig with the bloodworm? Without a side nod, you won’t be able to see the bite or won’t you be able to see if the jig has sunk to the bottom? Thank you.

Techniques and tactics of catching crucian carp with a side nod

There are 3 options for fishing tactics with a summer jig:

  1. Active movement around the reservoir and search for fish, bait is not used.
  2. Stationary fishing with bait, like with a float rod.
  3. The third option is intermediate: you need to move around the reservoir, but in moderation; bait is used, but in small quantities.

But still, first of all, catching crucian carp with a summer jig is just running fishing. It is reminiscent of hunting, so it is very interesting and exciting. This kind of fishing is as close as possible to spinning fishing.

Attention! Wading boots or waders will be very useful when fishing with a side nod rod. Such equipment significantly expands the fisherman’s capabilities. Using it, you can get to many interesting points that are inaccessible from the shore. A boat would be a good replacement for wading boots or waders. But we must keep in mind that at shallow depths it can scare away fish.

When fishing with a stationary bait, you need to cast to the desired point, after which all that remains is to wait for bites. In this case, the rod can be held in your hand, rested on the side of the boat, placed on a stand or in a boat holder. Retrieving a jig with a fishing rod with a side nod is also easy. But it may not work out right away. It will take a little practice and getting better at it.

The wiring technique looks like this:

  1. you need to lower the bait to the desired horizon;
  2. then you need to lift, causing the jig to oscillate;
  3. then it can be lowered in the same way, with hesitation.

Additional animation techniques that will increase your catches:

  • pauses;
  • “sawing” – playing with bait in a horizontal plane;
  • tapping on the bottom;
  • dragging the jig along the bottom.

A crucian bite when fishing with a rod with a side nod can occur immediately after casting, when the bait is immersed in the water. If this does not happen, you need to be prepared for the crucian carp to take the bait throughout the entire retrieve - during the ascent phase, during the lowering phase or during the pause. When fishing for the game, the fish bites quite confidently - the nod either sharply bends or straightens, or begins to sway.

When fishing with a stationary bait, the nature of the bite of crucian carp depends on its mood. When the fish is active, it quickly takes the bait (this usually happens in the spring, early and late summer and autumn). If the crucian carp is not very inclined to peck, it can try the bait on the hook for up to several minutes without taking it into its mouth. In this case, the nod will tremble slightly. Such bites of crucian carp on a summer jig are typical for mid-summer. They are also very well known to floaters and beavers.

If the length of the fishing line is less than the length of the rod - this is usually the case when fishing with a summer jig - when fishing for a crucian carp that has sat on a hook, you need to gradually fold the knees of the telescopic fishing rod. As a result, the trophy can be brought to the shore, hand or landing net.

Technique for catching crucian carp with nodding tackle

How successful nod fishing will be depends on the action of the jig and the correct fishing technique. Let's start with casting. When lowering the jig into the water, try not to let it immediately fall to the bottom. Slow it down, as it were, using a raised rod.

The success of fishing depends on the correct “game” with the jig

As soon as you feel that the jig has reached the bottom, let it sit for a few seconds. Then lift the tackle by 10-15 cm and swing it a little from side to side. Then lower it to the bottom again. Thus, the bait creates an attractive haze around itself. Most often, the fish bites at the moment when the bait lies on the bottom or slowly goes down.

Another popular fishing technique is nod tackle. The jig is raised from the bottom by about 5-10 cm. Then they begin to slowly move it to the left and then to the right. You can diversify the game by lifting the jig with rapid vibrations, and lowering it down, on the contrary, without any movements of the rod. At the same time, constantly change the frequency and intensity of vibrations. You can raise the jig diagonally, and lower it stepwise - with constant pauses.

For all this you will need well-tuned gear and experience. Therefore, we recommend that beginners start with simple raising and lowering of the jig without additional vibrations.

You can even practice in shallow water, where the action of the bait will be visible to you from the shore or boat. Mastering this type of fishing is not easy, but through trial and error you can find a suitable version of the nod and jig game.

When using tackle with a side nod, sometimes you can do without “playing” with a jig

The playing technique when using nodding tackle also depends on the size of the fish. Small crucian carp (up to 300 gr.) responds better to fast wired, intense vibrations of the jig. In this regard, such fishing is reminiscent of fishing for roach and bream.

Large crucian carp behave differently. He is attracted by the leisurely play of the jig and simpler wiring. Sudden movements of the bait will only scare him away. Therefore, it is best to make slow rises 5-7 cm from the bottom. Then smooth lowering and pause for 2-3 seconds. Then we repeat again.

Sometimes fishing with a side nod with minimal play of the jig also gives results. When it lies on the bottom for about a minute, and the angler makes only small twitches, causing it to just turn over on the bottom.

Also remember that the bite of crucian carp on a nod tackle often hits the hand holding the fishing rod. In this case, the nod may sharply bend or begin to swing strongly. Hook carefully, without sudden jerks. As you know, the lips of crucian carp are not very strong and are easily torn by a hook.

For a greater chance of catching, you should always have different types of jigs with you.

Mistakes when fishing for crucian carp with a side nod

  1. Many people use 1-2 models of jigs for fishing, limiting themselves to this. The choice of bait is actually not the most important rule for success. But it’s still worth experimenting by trying different jigs. It wouldn’t hurt to have an arsenal of 10-20 different models.

  2. Since catching crucian carp with a summer jig often takes place among grass and snags, you should not allow the line to become slack after hooking, you must immediately pull out the trophy. It would be a mistake to use thin lines that do not allow you to quickly catch fish.
  3. Some people, when hunting for crucian carp with a jig, fish only the bottom layer. But do not forget that the fish can stand at half-water, and even at the surface.

Summer jig is a fishing method accessible to everyone that brings excellent results. It often happens that an angler armed with a rod with a side nod ends up with a good catch, while his colleagues with float rods or donks can barely get away from zero. The main thing is to master the technique of fishing with a summer jig. There is nothing super complicated here, just a little practice is enough to master it. And then a fishing rod with a side nod will definitely delight you with excellent catches.

Side nod for catching crucian carp

Side nod fishing is becoming increasingly popular. There are no restrictions in the fishing rules for fishing on a rod with a side nod. Fishing begins in early spring and ends in the pre-winter period, when the coastal shallow waters are already beginning to be covered with ice. Often in the spring, when catching crucian carp, it is a fishing rod with a side nod that opens the fish. After all, in shallow bays with old reeds, the water warms up faster than in deep places. Probably the main advantage of this non-standard and successful fishing is the ability to fish where a conventional float rod fails. Namely, in dense thickets of reeds and among the dense “burdock” of water lilies, where it is difficult to detect even a small window. You can’t throw a hook with bait and a float of a Bolognese or fly fishing rod here, much less a feeder feeder. A light jig with a bloodworm, worm or maggot will slip freely among the reeds and egg capsules. And a nod moving to the side from the tip of the rod tip will sensitively indicate a bite.

Summer nod has other benefits. Sometimes this situation happens. A company of fishermen came to the river, for example, with feeder gear. While the fishermen are stirring the bait, waiting for it to swell and be suitable for use, tapping the bottom with a marker weight, looking for a ramp to the hole and a catching point, one of the company immediately takes the rod with a nod on the tip and goes into the coastal reeds. A few minutes later, the splashing of fish is heard in the reeds. And soon a successful fisherman appears from there with a large crucian carp in his hands. There is no special secret here. It’s just that such fishing does not require bait or bait. The fish stands in places that are both the dining table and the bedroom at the same time. The bait hangs on the stems of grass and reeds in the form of various larvae, swarms in the coastal mud in the form of worms and bugs, and the reeds provide good protection from the direct rays of the hot sun. Therefore, fishing with a side nod is popular when the angler moves along the shore and fishes all promising places where fish can stand. As they say, it removes the foam... The side nod requires certain gear. For such fishing, a lightweight rod about five meters long is selected, made of modern materials, that is, durable and comfortable enough to be kept suspended during the entire fishing trip. Considering that the line with the jig goes vertically from the tip of the rod to a fairly shallow depth, where fishing usually takes place, then after hooking it is necessary to throw part of the line off the reel so that it becomes equal in length to the rod, otherwise it will be impossible to fully catch the fish. It is best to make nods from lavsan, or, in extreme cases, from an old x-ray. This is a quite elastic and durable material from which good nods can be cut. Some even make do the old-fashioned way with pieces of nipple rubber or springs. These nods are also quite functional and in some cases even more convenient. For more accurate and faster lowering of the jig among the grass and reeds to the bottom, it is best to use tungsten jigs. The best shape is slightly elongated, for example, in the form of a droplet or oatmeal. This will improve her game. The depth is shallow and if you take a “shot” jig, it will be too straightforward in play. However, active play of the bait is not required here, as in winter. Small smooth rises and falls with the tip of the rod are enough to make the bait swarm at the bottom and oscillate at the bottom. If a fish stands in this place, then it will definitely take the bait.

For catching not very large fish, it is better to use a monofilament line with a diameter of 0.17 mm. And when it comes to carp, you can’t do without a braided line. The fish is too strong and stubborn. In the spring it is better to fish with bloodworms, and closer to summer, dung worms and maggots will be more successful bait. Then you can try fishing with corn, semolina, pearl barley, that is, with plant baits, which are preferable for fishing in the summer. Very effective baits are various larvae, worms and bugs, which can be collected from the bottom of burdock capsules and from reed stems. In the summer heat, it is on them that all the fish, and large ones at that, can be caught. Catching crucian carp with a side nod is also more successful than with a float rod.
