Self-snapping or self-striking hooks in fishing are not new. They appeared quite a long time ago and are used in almost all types of fishing. But not everyone knows how to use them. Based on my experience, I decided to share theoretical information, observations, and also talk about the types of self-hooks and their differences.
Self-cutting equipment
Self-hooking fishing tackle system.
The system allows you to increase the effect of both bottom and float fishing several times. The effect is created by automatic hooking directly on the float and on the bottom.
Universal nozzles: for 1 and 2 leashes they are used both for float fishing - when hooked, the float sinks, and for bottom fishing - in this case, a removable feeder is installed on top of the nozzle. The nozzle is equipped with a leash with a hook and the necessary weight.
Bottom hooks: fixed weights from 12 g to 300 g allow you to catch fish only from the bottom. Casting is done from the shore using a feeder or an appropriate fishing rod to any distance. Bite alarms are not installed in this case. The fish is hooked and pulls the main line.
After casting, it is strictly necessary to fold back the handle of a simple reel or turn on the baitrunner.
Bottom Undercutters: Removable weight allows you to adjust the weight as needed. The functions are the same as with a fixed load.
Group breakdown depending on the power of the hooker allows you to catch fish:
0 g - from 50 g to 200 g, hook No. 4 class. Russia 1 g - from 50 g to 500 g, hook No. 5 class. Russia 2 g - from 10 g to 1 kg, hook No. 7 class. Russia3 g - from 200 g to 2 kg, hook No. 8 class. Russia4 g - from 300 g to 3 kg, hook No. 10 class. Russia5 g - from 300 g to 4 kg, hook No. 12 class. Russia6 g - from 500 g to 5 kg, hook No. 15 class. Russia7-8 g - up to 6 kg and above, hook No. 20 class. Russia
For efficiency, place hooks on hooks in groups according to the recommendation.
Preparing the undercutter for work (float version).
Install the shipped and equipped hook hook with a float onto the fishing rod. Manually lift the hooker, place the bait on the hook, insert the trigger into the eye of the hooker, straighten the leads, excluding overlaps on the hooker guides.
Before loading, adjust the trigger by squeezing or pressing the angle of the trigger needle. Set the desired depth and cast to any distance. When hooking a fish, the float sinks. Allows you to catch any fish from 50 g, as well as a predator when installing the appropriate power of the hook and the necessary leash.
Preparing the undercutter for work (bottom version).
Equip the undercutter with leads with hooks as recommended. If necessary, install the required weight on the appropriate option. Manually lift the undercutters and place complementary food in the feeder. Load the strikers, insert the trigger into the eye of the striker. Straighten the leashes, excluding overlaps on the guides. Before charging, adjust the trigger needle by squeezing or pressing the needle angle. Cast to any distance. When lowering the hook to the bottom, do not reel out the fishing line and do not install bite alarms. When hooking a fish, the slack in the fishing line is removed independently.
After casting, it is strictly necessary to fold back the handle of the reel and turn on the baitrunner.
How to choose a fishing hook for crucian carp
People say: “You can’t go after crucian carp with a harpoon.” To catch it, you will need a small hook, because the head, body and mouth of this underwater inhabitant are small. When choosing hooks, you should better study the numbering rules.
Hook size for crucian carp
The size of a fishing hook for crucian carp according to domestic numbering differs greatly from the international one. It is the latter that all manufacturers focus on. In Russian numbering, product numbers are presented in ascending order, from No. 2.5 to 20. The number determines the length from the forearm to the tip in millimeters. The optimal hook number for crucian carp is 6.
Unlike domestic foreign numbering, the numbering is reversed, where small products are indicated by large numbers, and large ones, on the contrary, by single numbers. The number depends on the proportion between the length of the fore-end and the width of the hook, so the parameters make the numbering according to the regulations of the international classification. It is also called the Reddic scale.
Models with names are especially popular among outdoor enthusiasts. On the package there is a number, and what fish it is intended for, and what bait to use. For hunting small crucian carp, products No. 17 according to the international classification are perfect, and for trophy specimens - No. 14. When choosing gear for catching crucian carp, it is worth considering the fact that it does not swallow the bait, but clings with the edge of its lip. Therefore, it is recommended to take the minimum size of gear.
Material of manufacture
For manufacturing, manufacturers most often choose springy steel thread. For catching crucian carp, products are made of high-carbon steel, they are additionally processed to avoid rapid corrosion. Special coating – Nb-black nickel. In case of rust, it is enough to insert them into dry soap or a sponge with car oil.
As for color, models for crucian carp should be black or blue. This will make it much faster and easier to attract the attention of the fish. These versions are available for sale in a variety of colors, but if desired, you can paint them at home. The main thing is that the product is sufficiently hard and not subject to deformation during the fishing process.

Interview with the Master of Sports about feeder hooks and the secrets of their selection. The Master of Sports and Russian Champion in feeder fishing shared the secrets of choosing quality hooks for fishing.
Hook shape
Depending on the fishing method, the shape of the hook is selected. Regular single (one-hinged) versions are round in shape. They work well for crucian carp. To catch crucian carp with a float rod, you should use hooks with a straight and thin sting. For hunting from the bottom, it is recommended to use products with a tip with an internal bend that prevents the prey from escaping. In relation to the bend, the length of the forend should be several times greater.
Wire thickness
Depending on the specific bait, the required wire thickness is selected. If you choose a bloodworm/worm, the thickness of the hook should allow the bait to maintain its mobility. Products of greater thickness will work optimally for vegetable attachments (dough, corn, porridge).
Sharpness of the sting
To prevent prey from leaving the tackle, hooks should be used as sharp as possible; it is good when the point is slightly offset from the axis. At the moment of hooking, the sting should easily pierce the lip of the prey. Models need to be selected with ideal sharpening. If the hook has become dull, it is good to rub it several times against the grease on the matchbox. It can be tied either to a shoulder blade or to a ring.
Mounting option
Of all the variety of knots, it is good to use Palomar for crucian carp. To do this, you need to fold the edge of the line in half and pass the formed loop through the ring.
Then a simple knot is tied around the ring with a loop, and the hook is passed through the loop. Then they take it with one hand, and with the other they pull up the two tails of the fishing line. When the knot is tightened, the excess monofilament is removed. But first, the knot is slightly moistened in order to maintain the strength of the monofilament.
Choosing hooks for feeder fishing
Just a couple of decades ago, a good fishing hook was in short supply, and there was no need to talk about careful selection; fishermen used what they could “get.”
Nowadays there are no such problems and every fishing store offers a significant assortment of hooks that differ in:
- form;
- size;
- weight;
- configurations;
- manufacturing materials;
- blossom.
Most anglers purchase feeder hooks for different fishing conditions, and the right choice increases the chances that the fishing will be successful. But a large assortment also has a downside, because it is more difficult to figure out which hook will show the desired result on the pond and provide convenience while fishing.
Hooks for the feeder must be sharp and effectively “cut” the fish’s lip when biting. Hooks made of thick wire are more reliable, but they repel small fish and the hook is worse than when using a thin hook. So when choosing, you need a reasonable combination of wire thickness (power) and hook notching, in this case you will be confident in your installations.
In addition, hooks for successful feeder fishing are selected to match the bait because, for example, a thick hook will not pierce maggots or bloodworms, which are used as bait. The bait on the hook should look natural so as not to scare away the fish and provoke it to bite.
Therefore, when fishing with animal baits, choose feeder hooks made of thin wire in size corresponding to the size of the bait. Agree that one maggot on a large and thick hook looks unnatural, and it’s not so easy to put it on.
And even soft canned corn is used with thin wire hooks that easily pierce and retain the shape of the bait. When using a dung or earthworm as bait, you need a hook with a long shank, because it is difficult to put such a bait on a small hook.
The best hooks for a picker or feeder have a minimum weight, which ensures a natural supply of bait and its “play” in the water column.
A light and durable hook is the dream of feeder fishing lovers and therefore their preferences are on the side of such manufacturers as:
- Owner.
- Gamakatsu.
- Preston.
- Kamasan.
- Korum.
- Drennan.
These companies specialize in the production of hooks for feeder fishing, although most of them do not have their own facilities for such purposes. China is now the leading manufacturer, including hooks for feeder fishing.
European companies place their orders with Chinese enterprises, and their specialists control the quality of their products so that they meet international standards. We regret to say that there are many counterfeits of popular brands on the market, and before purchasing, it is advisable to make sure that you are purchasing a truly authentic product.
Each package of hooks from popular brands indicates:
- Name;
- hook number;
- The diameter of the wire;
- color;
- hook type;
- the presence of an ear or blade;
- number of hooks;
- barcode of the country of origin.
In one article there is no point in dwelling on specific models of hooks, especially since these companies have a very large assortment. The main thing is to understand the principles of choosing hooks, because each body of water has its own characteristics and corresponding ichthyofauna.
When catching small fish with miniature baits, the smallest and lightest hooks are selected; if we are talking about crucian carp, bream, or carp, then the size and thickness of the hooks increase.
Feeder athletes begin fishing with small hooks and, as necessary and when sorting out baits, increase their size.
Important! Choose hooks with a point bent to the side, this improves the hook and the fish will not come off the hook.
Features of choosing a hook
Depending on fishing conditions
Peculiarities:
- when fishing in a reservoir with a rocky or muddy day, the hook must be used with the sharpest possible tip;
- in the winter season, it is more advisable to fish with a hook number 14, it will allow you to make a good hook;
- in autumn it is better to fish with thin hooks;
- In spring and autumn it is better to use stronger ones, since bream is very active and, otherwise, may break off.
Depending on the gear used
Basic moments:
- when using a feeder, the hooks should allow you to easily hook the bream, even at the moment of incomplete swallowing of the bait, in other words, while the fish is trying it. It is better to use round ones;
- When using spinning gear, it is recommended to use hooks with a long shank and barb to catch bream. Here it is possible to plant several worms at once, which increases the chances of catching;
- When using a float in fishing, you should give preference to an elongated, as strong and durable hook as possible, which is also suitable for long-distance casting. It holds bait excellently.
How to increase your fish catch? ">
Over 7 years of active fishing, I have found dozens of ways to improve the bite. Here are the most effective ones:
- Bite activator . This pheromone additive attracts fish most strongly in cold and warm water. Discussion of the bite activator “Hungry Fish”.
- Increased gear sensitivity. Read the appropriate manuals for your specific type of gear.
- Pheromone -based lures .
Hooks for bream fishing
Bream is the main object of feeder fishing. It can be difficult for a novice feeder to decide which hook to choose for fishing this fish. This choice directly depends on what kind of bait the angler uses. Large bream are usually caught using the following types of baits:
- crawling out;
- a bunch of dung worms;
- several maggots;
- a bunch of bloodworms.
Adult bream, as a rule, look for food in the bottom soil, so the hook must have sufficient mass to quickly sink to the bottom. You should not use light models made of thin wire to catch this fish, since in this case the bait will slowly sink to the bottom and can be eaten by small fish feeding in the water column. In addition, a product made of thin wire will inevitably tear the delicate lips of the bream, which will lead to frequent fish escapes.
Models with additional barbs on the forend are ideal for worm fishing.
When catching bream using a crawler, you should use feeder hooks number 4–2 (according to the international classification) made of thick wire. A hook of this size can easily hook a large worm. It’s good if the design of the hook includes 2-3 small barbs located on the fore-end - this will ensure more reliable retention of the hook and will not allow the fish to pull off the bait with impunity. Such models can be found in the line, which produces hooks for fishing on any type of bait.
If a bunch of worms is used as bait, it is necessary to use a model with a long shank and a straight bend, made of medium-thick wire. Additional beards on the fore-end will also not be superfluous. To attach 3-4 worms, you will need a size 6-4 hook. For worm fishing, it is better to use dark or red feeder hooks.
When the bait is several maggots or a bunch of bloodworms, it is better to use models made of thin wire and minimally damaging the bait
Live bait will move actively and is more likely to attract the attention of fish. Models made of thin wire will inevitably lead to a slow fall of the bait to the bottom and increase the risk of it being eaten by small fish feeding in the upper layers of the water
To prevent this from happening, you need to attach a small lead pellet 10 centimeters from the hook, ensuring that the bait quickly falls. When using small hooks, in order to avoid breaking the bream lip, it is necessary to use a rubber shock absorber in the equipment, which is installed between the leash and the feeder and allows you to soften the jerks of the fish. The size of the hook for fishing for several maggots or a bunch of bloodworms should not exceed No. 10.
Hook thickness
As for the thickness of the hooks, there is such a rule. Thin hooks are used for bait so as not to damage delicate bloodworms, maggots or worms. For plant attachments, you can use products made from thicker wire.
Some hooks are equipped with a small spring to hold soft baits. They should be used when fishing with baits such as:
- bread crumb;
- dough;
- semolina.
Although when catching crucian carp with a float rod and carefully casting, these baits will not fly off the hook, and the spring acts as a safety net.
Examples of gear used: self-cutting fishing hooks
Roller-type equipment for pike fishing
Despite the fact that self-cutting hooks are more common when catching peaceful fish of the carp family, an example can be given of how to use them when catching a predator, such as pike, perch, pike perch or burbot. For this purpose, a “skating rink” type tackle is used.
The design of this fishing tool is simple and consists of the following elements:
- float-cylinder made of hard foam 18 cm in length and 6 cm in diameter and a cut for fastening the fishing line in the end part;
- fishing line of the required length, wound in the center of the float;
- olive shaped sinker;
- retractable leashes on carabiners, equipped with self-locking hooks.
The principle of fishing with such gear is similar to fishing with mugs, but has the advantage that it works even in windy weather. The sinker creates enough tension so that with a sharp jerk the predator sits on the hook. After fishing, the leash with the fish is unfastened from the main fishing line, replaced with a new one, and fishing continues.
Feeder self-cutting tackle
There are three options for using self-cutting tackle together with a feeder, although they are only suitable for reservoirs with standing water.
First option. It is the most popular and is actually a paternoster equipped with a short leash, the difference being the sinker, which changes to a weighted swim feeder. In this design, the fishing gear works very effectively when hunting roach, practically eliminating empty bites. The length of the leash is about half a meter, and the weight of the feeder is 50 grams; it is filled with animal bait. After casting, the line is tightened and a heavy bite alarm is installed.
Second option. Unlike the first option, this equipment consists of more elements:
- main line with a size 18 feeder attached to it;
- a leash with a self-closing hook is fastened from the feeder at a distance of half a meter;
- at the very end of the tackle a bombard weighing 50 grams is installed.
It is important to remember that with such heavy equipment, hooking is not only not required, but is generally dangerous, since it can lead to breakage of the working line. Hooking and fishing are done smoothly and slowly, slightly reeling in the line
Since the feeders have a considerable mass, to cast them, the tensile strength of the fishing line must be at least 3 kg. To protect the working leash with a strength of 1 kg, a spacer made of durable elastic material is used, which acts as a shock absorber.
Third option. This option is justified when fishing for carp. A large feeder feeder is attached to the end of the main line, and a self-cutting fishing hook is mounted just above it, on a very short leash.
The fishing technique is to fill the feeder with bait until a dense ball is formed. A hook is inserted into this ball, on which bait is pre-attached and camouflaged. The careful fish does not notice the line of the leash and begins to eat the bait with appetite, among which bait with a hook appears unnoticed. When the fish senses danger and suddenly swims to the side, it will hook itself. Using this method, the largest and most cautious carp are caught.
Do-it-yourself self-cutting tackle
- It is necessary to prepare diverting leashes with special hooks, a weight or feeder with a mass calculated from the mass of the expected fish caught, as well as accessories in the form of swivels, carabiners, shock absorbers and beads.
- The next step is to tie the swivel to the leash, and attach it to the main fishing line using a link from a carabiner with a bead and a shock-absorbing cambric.
- At the last stage, it is necessary to tie a feeder or a weight corresponding to the type of fishing to the end of the fishing line.
It should also be remembered that it is always necessary to adjust the drag on the reel if there is a lot of hiding place for fish in the reservoir. The rod must always be visible and within reach in order to exercise control over it. It is advisable to place it in your hand or a special holder, otherwise a large individual may drag it into the water with it, since a fish caught on a self-sustaining hook will no longer be able to get off it.
How to choose based on fish size
If you are fishing for crucian carp in a known body of water, then take into account the potential catch. It is not necessary to do this, but in this way you can cut off possible annoying little things. This fish is able to adapt to any conditions, therefore it lives in difficult-to-access ponds and grows to large sizes. For example, adult individuals reach 40 cm in length and weigh up to 2 kg.
Small and medium individuals

Nuances of choice
You need to know the feeding habits of fish in order to choose the right bait for crucian carp. Depending on the distance at which you have to fish and the type of bait, hooks are selected as follows:
- for fishing for bloodworms, a hook No. 18 is suitable, thin with a non-curved sting, and the method of fishing is unimportant;
- if the bait is maggot, dough or porridge balls, so that it does not fly off, take a larger hook - No. 16 or 14, with a small spring wound around the shank.
- For a worm, crucian hooks number 10 or 12 are suitable, preferably with elongated shanks.
- for foam plastic for crucian carp, select No. 10 or even 8, so that the ball from it is the size of the hook.
The bait should be small in size - crucian carp is a cautious fish and will not even swim up to large ones. The brighter the color of the crucian carp bait, the greater the likelihood that the fish will notice it and become interested.
Thickness. The diameter of the metal is also selected taking into account the bait: for maggots, worms and bloodworms, the hook chosen is as thin as possible - less than 0.5 mm thick. Then the bait is naturally mobile. The only caveat is that you need to fish out large crucian carp on these hooks slowly and gradually so as not to break them off.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=v__9UZC0wv0
When fishing with bait made of dough or porridge, thicker hooks with a diameter of more than 0.5 mm are used. It is more difficult to remove the bait from such bait and it holds better.
Ring or spatula?
There are different models of hooks that differ in the shape of the head.
The ring is considered more reliable. If you do not seal the spatula with solder, it can cut the knot when fishing for large crucian carp.
What kind of hook is needed to catch crucian carp
When choosing gear, and, consequently, hooks for crucian carp, it is necessary to take into account the specific fishing conditions. Namely:
- Water. In most cases, prey fishing occurs in large swampy bodies of water, where the depth is shallow and there is a high layer of silt at the bottom.
- Weather. A stable bite of the ubiquitous crucian carp is observed when it is warm and there is no wind. In hot weather, the fish is inactive and hides in the cool corners of the reservoir.
- Seasonality. At the beginning of spring, in the first 2–3 weeks, when reservoirs are freed from the ice shell, underwater inhabitants begin to become more active, showing increased interest in food, preparing for spawning. The bites of crucian carp during this period are especially frequent and stable. In summer, crucian carp is difficult to catch. In August and early autumn, it prepares for wintering, actively scouring the reservoir in search of food. It can often be found near wintering pits. In the cold season, you can catch crucian carp throughout the day, the main thing is to choose a large, unovergrown reservoir.
- Times of Day. Successful fishing for crucian carp often occurs in the morning and evening hours. You can catch it during the day, but you have to try, especially if it’s very hot. Hunting will also be successful at night.
- Fishing method. For catching crucian carp, both classic float tackle and bottom tackle have proven themselves well. It is better to give preference to a long rod (5 m) of a dark color. The components of the tackle should be light and thin.
- Groundbait mixture and lures. It is possible to attract the attention of crucian carp with the help of bait made from semolina, oatmeal or millet and flavorings in the form of sunflower seeds and oils. Baits are effective both of animal and plant origin.
Before buying hooks for catching crucian carp, it is recommended to take into account the following nuances:
- degree of metal hardening;
- sharpness of the sting;
- how well the beard clings.
It is not difficult to determine the quality of metal hardening; just try to bend the hook itself. If everything turns out easily, then the product is weakly hardened. The overheated version can break at any moment, and the prey will come off it.
Catching hooks for crucian carp have sufficient sharpness. Since it is possible to catch it through a confident hook, the sting should instantly pierce the fish’s lip. You can understand how sharp the sting is in a simple way: run your fingertip along it. If you do this manipulation on the nail, the sting can be dulled. It is considered ideal when the tip sticks into the skin.
To maintain sharpness, it is recommended to use duct tape.
You also need to choose hooks for fishing taking into account:
- the size of the catch (the larger the catch, the larger the model);
- fishing method (feeder, float tackle, spring, donk, spinning);
- baits (the size must correspond to the specific bait);
- fishing places (mostly the object of the hunt lives near snags, with an abundance of vegetation).
Selection of equipment according to the type of fish
Carp, carp
Carp is a powerful river fish, catching which brings great pleasure to fishermen. When using feeder gear to catch carp, the angler must make sure that all its parts are made of high quality. After all, such a fish can break even the strongest tackle. Therefore, after installation it is worth checking everything again.
As for feeder equipment options, the following are best suited for carp:
- Tackle method;
- Tackle, paternoster;
- Tackle asymmetrical loop.
Carp can grow to impressive sizes and therefore, when planning to catch them, you need to roughly understand which specimens are found in the reservoir. To avoid unnecessary breaks and unpleasant losses.
Feeder gear for carp fishing must have a strong design that can withstand the pressure of this giant. As a tool, most experts advise using the method. The feeder installed in this gear can effectively distribute the aroma, thus attracting fish.
Roach
Roach is a lively small fish (although sometimes decent specimens are found) that every fisherman in our country knows. There are a large number of avid fishermen who love to catch roach. Moreover, sometimes the catch of this fish can be really large.
Feeder gear for roach fishing should not be too bulky. Of the equipment options for this fish, the paternoster is best suited. Because it allows the fisherman to react to the bite as quickly as possible.
crucian carp
This fish is well known to us since childhood. Most fishermen got their first big catch while hunting for crucian carp. This species is widespread and is therefore caught in a variety of conditions. Recently, crucian carp have also begun to be caught on a feeder, using the so-called Paternoster method. This gear allows you to do this quite effectively.
Crucian carp does not require particularly strong fishing line or other components. When hooked, the fish doesn’t behave particularly spiritedly, so getting it out of the water is not a difficult task.
Zander
Feeder gear was not originally designed for catching predators like pike perch. However, over time, many fishermen began to use components of feeder gear to catch pike perch specifically. Due to the fact that the feeder rod has good rigidity along its entire length and a very flexible and sensitive tip at the end. It has become an ideal option for bottom fishing for pike perch. Spinning rods with sliding weights are especially good at this. They allow the line to move freely, and the rod tip signals a bite. Paternoster and inline are best suited for catching walleye.
Som
Catfish is the largest river fish found on our continent. Even now, specimens weighing more than 100 kg are often caught. In ancient times, these monsters are said to have reached unimaginable sizes. Of course, every fisherman dreams of catching such a trophy.
One of the options for catching catfish was a feeder. Of course, when choosing gear for such fishing, you need to take the strongest fishing line and rod hooks. The Paternoster is considered the best option for feeder equipment for catfish.
Gustera
This fish is found in many of our rivers. It is often caught in the same places as small bream. Moreover, it is caught both in rivers with strong currents and in ponds and lakes.
White breams use the Paternoster as equipment for feeder fishing. If you need to cast bait far away, use a Helicopter.
Bream
Bream is a very popular fish in our climate zone, having a wide habitat. This species can reach quite impressive sizes, which makes such a catch desirable for many fishermen. Bream lives both in quiet waters of lakes and ponds, and in rivers with powerful currents.
Bream are caught all over the world using a feeder, as this fish loves to take bait from the bottom. If you bait the place well and choose the bait well, you can catch a really big catch even with one tackle.
Used as feeder equipment.
- Tackle Helicopter with two knots.
- The loop is symmetrical.
- The loop is asymmetrical.
- Paternoster.
Ide
Like bream, this fish is very widespread in our latitudes. It can be seen in mountain lakes and rivers on the plain. Ide can reach quite decent sizes and therefore many fishermen catch it with great pleasure. Moreover, they catch it in a variety of ways, starting with ordinary fishing rods and ending with feeder gear. Moreover, the feeder has proven itself very well. The following equipment is used for feeder fishing:
- Helicopter for long casts.
- Paternoster.
How to choose the right hook
When choosing a hook, you need to understand that the hook is selected depending on the bait and the fish to be caught. The smaller the nozzle, the lighter the hook you need to use and vice versa.
Accordingly, if a kilogram of crucian carp bites on one bloodworm, then there is nothing left but to use the 18th size. If a crucian carp bites on size 16, then you need to use it.
You need to find a middle ground that will allow you to get bites and land fish. If there is a bite, but after the bite the fish breaks off the leash or unbends the hook, then such fishing is not interesting. The second point is that if you fish with rough tackle but don’t get any bites, that’s also not interesting.
Therefore, you need to look for a middle ground. The presentation of the nozzle is also very important. It must be remembered that when fishing in the bottom layer or in the water column, it is very important at what speed the hook is lowered.
- Accordingly, if there is only one bloodworm on the hook, but the hook is heavy, it will fall quite quickly and unnaturally. The fish may not notice him because he flew past her.
- Further, if the bait has excess weight due to a thick, large hook, then the fish may not suck it in, and even if it does, it may feel the extra weight and spit out the bait before the fisherman notices the bite and makes the hook.
- It is very important that if it doesn’t bite, the very first thing you can do is to start reducing the size of the hook and, as the size of the hook decreases, reduce its weight.
Thanks to this, you can slow down the speed of lowering the nozzle and during suction the fish will no longer feel the catch and the number of bites will increase.

A universal offset hook that is suitable for catching both relatively small and large fish. The model can be used even in heavily overgrown reservoirs with a rocky bottom.
Due to the increased diameter of the eye, the hook can be easily mounted on a fishing line with a large cross-section. This allows you to use a leash made of durable monofilament fishing line or other equipment.
The wide bend makes it possible to conveniently attach the necessary bait and increases the likelihood of a successful hooking. The attached bait looks quite natural, and the hook itself ensures reliable retention of the catch.
Pros:
- Convenient bait attachment.
- Sufficient ear diameter.
- Thoughtful form.
- Maneuverability and naturalness of the bait.
- There are several sizes of the model on sale.
Minuses:
Small number of hooks in the package.
A high-quality model at a low price. There are both strong and thick and thinner versions of HitFish hooks on sale. They are suitable for amateur or sport fishing and are durable and reliable.
Review of some models on the modern fishing tackle market
We can say that circle hooks with a self-cutting tip are universal. Among those available on the market, you can choose the best option for use both with natural baits and lures, and for fishing with artificial baits, such as silicone or spinners, and success is obvious even when fishing on the “track” (tension is created by the mass of the spinner).
Among the options available on the European market, there are three main manufacturers of self-cutting fishing hooks, among which the angler must definitely find the type and model that fully satisfies his needs.
- Rapala VMC Corporation. As a striking example of the described type of hooks, we can cite the VMC MYSTIC® MATCH Pellet Feeder model. These are single, reinforced hooks, produced under numbers 10, 12, 14 and 16, aimed at feeder and match fishing. The unsurpassed sharpness of the sting ensures instant hooking of fish. It has a high quality coating and is focused on the use of baits of plant and animal origin. The price for a package of 10 pieces is very affordable and is about 190 rubles.
- Gamakatsu Fishing Hooks. A Japanese brand, among whose models a prominent representative is the single hook Gamakatsu LS-3513F. This series is aimed at catching carp fish and is made of high-quality steel with the use of chemical sharpening of the tip. Like most hooks of this type, the axis of the hook is directed towards the attachment point. This ensures instant and reliable hooking of the fish, while causing minimal injury to it. One of the indicators of the quality of this company's products is that many European bait manufacturers use Gamakatsu hooks. The LS-3513F model comes in a package of 13 pieces, the cost of which is about 130 rubles.
- Eagle Claw. Hooks made in the USA, the name of which speaks for itself and translates as “eagle claw”. A traditional representative of the non-classical type of self-cutting hooks. The manufacturer offers many options for both single and double hooks. However, they are all united by reliability, American quality workmanship, as well as versatility in relation to catching various types of fish. However, the price corresponds to the positioning. Thus, the Eagle Claw L2004G model in a package of 5 pieces will cost about 400 rubles, and you can’t buy it in all Russian stores.

Single hook for catching large and strong fish. A sharp beard reliably holds a large bait on the rounded bend of the hook. The model is made of thickened wire and has an elongated fore-end, which makes it easier to remove from the mouth of a predator. The sting, slightly bent inward, does not allow the prey to free itself even during prolonged fishing and loosening of the fishing line.
The hook is attached to the leash through the head, located at a great distance from the tip. The design prevents predators from damaging the fishing line with their teeth, which significantly extends the life of the gear. The large black hook does not scare away cautious fish, and when hooking it provides a deep grip.
Pros:
- Extended forend.
- Concave sharp sting.
- Rounded shape of the hook.
- High strength and durability.
- Discreet black color.
Minuses:
Quite a high price.
The hook is suitable for catching strong fish and is capable of reliably holding carp and even catfish. The model is made of durable wire, so it does not bend or break under load. A worthy choice for professional fishermen.

The Maver Katana is an ultra-lightweight, thin, nickel-plated, medium-hard hook made from carbon steel. The model practically does not injure live bait, allowing it to make natural movements. A small, elongated hook is securely hidden in its body, without causing disturbance to cautious fish. The classic round shape ensures reliable hooking of prey.
The model retains its qualities even after intensive fishing throughout the season. The hook does not break and holds its shape well under the jerks of the fish. The tip retains its factory-sharpened sharpness for a long time, and a special nickel-plated coating protects the product from the negative effects of water. A wide selection of sizes allows you to choose a hook for the required fishing conditions.
Pros:
- Durable nickel plated steel.
- Resistant to abrasives.
- High quality workmanship.
- Light hook weight.
Minuses:
It is more expensive than many market analogues.
A reliable model for catching small fish, keeping the tip sharp for a long time and having a special coating to protect against corrosion. Equally well suited for both amateurs and professional athletes.
How to choose based on bait
Experienced people sort hooks not only by numbers, but also by bait. In order for fishing to go well, it is advisable to select the same size bait and hook. It is worth saying that the sting may peek out a little from the reverse side. When using worms, you should take species with long shanks. As for putting on the nozzle, it is carried out according to the “stocking” principle. You can also take a thin one with beards on the fore-end, which are turned in the other direction. This is very convenient, since you can be sure that the bait will not jump off or fly away during casting. If we talk about sizes, then it can be size 10, as well as 12.
A completely different matter is a bloodworm hook, which should be small, thin, but extremely sharp. Planting must be done carefully so that the delicacy does not lose its “presentation”. Having decided to use bloodworms together with maggots, which will increase the chances of a bite, choose a larger hook. The ideal option would be number 18 or 20. If you use only maggots, then it is better to take products number 16.
Particular attention is paid to plant bait and hook. So, if you decide to use dough, then it is better to buy a special element with a spring on the fore-end, which will allow you to better insert the delicacy. You can use a size 18 hook with this bait.
Most popular hooks
Despite the fact that there are a great variety of different hooks on sale, there are some that are more popular.
These should include:
- Keiryu. These are blue hooks that are usually used for bottom fishing. Given the dark color and depth, you can achieve almost complete invisibility so as not to scare the fish.
- Maruseigo-bh. The product is made in black color to allow fishing closer to the bottom. The hooks are made of high strength wire. Thanks to the serrations on the fore-end, the bait holds better.
- Chinu With Eye. These are elements with a forged subdivision. The part has a beard that is bent slightly to the side. These hooks are used for float and bottom fishing.
- Iseama With Eye. These hooks are universal. They can be used to catch not only crucian carp, but also all other fish.
- Pin hook. Domestic fishermen are looking at this product with special care, because the choice of hook sizes is incredibly rich.
- Worm SP-BH. This is a bright red hook that can be seen from afar. Due to the long fore-end, the bait will not curl up. The product is used if the angler is going to engage in bottom fishing.
- Kappastyle 2. The presented hooks are purchased by people who fish with a float. A small beard prevents the fish that has bitten from jumping off the hook.
