How to choose a baitcasting reel for spinning

Most anglers use spinning reels. The multiplier reel for spinning rods is undeservedly ignored. There is a common myth that fishing with a baitcaster requires more skill, and not everyone can master it. But in fact, a beginner needs to master the most ordinary casting, the same as when fishing with a spinning rod, which can be learned in a few times.

Multipliers are universal, they are used for many types of fishing with different weights of bait. They are effective for light baits from 3 to 20 grams, but they also work great with weights over 60 grams, unlike spinning baits.

What to look for when choosing?

Remember that this model has a complex design, which greatly affects the cost. Therefore, when choosing a multiplier, you should not purchase ultra-budget models, so as not to be disappointed.

The main characteristics, requirements for the pond, spinning rod for a multiplier reel are indicated in the accompanying instructions. Make sure the model is suitable for the climate conditions of the region.

Find out what minimum fishing line diameter the multiplier can work with. The smaller the diameter specified, the more variations you will have for line selection. An incorrectly selected fishing line can get stuck in the spool and become damaged. The higher the gear ratio, the less the reel thrust. Values from 4.5 to 5.2 to 1 are suitable.

Low-profile, small-sized multipliers ensure high casting accuracy. When using braid, you should choose a model with a ceramic hole, thanks to which the cord will not fray.

Characteristics

The multiplier operates on the principle of inertia; its structure is somewhat similar to the functioning of a winch. There is a “trigger” located near the holder, which makes it easier to cast with a wrist. There is a bare blank underneath the spool where the ring finger usually sits. This ensures better sensitivity.

The angler can pass the braid through his fingers, which increases sensitivity. At every moment of time, the fisherman knows where the bait is, without even watching it, but by tactile sensations.

Be careful to size your line wisely if you plan to use this method, as too thin a line can cut your fingers.

Types of tactile bait control:

  • control of the braid while the bait is falling. The cord passes between the thumb and forefinger;
  • Line control all the time while fishing. This method often leads to cuts and is not suitable for everyone.

Application

Multipliers for spinning rods are used for casting fishing from the shore, from a boat, for power fishing in a plumb line or by trolling.

For the multiplier to work for a long time, you need to know the rules of its maintenance. Before installing a new model, you need to wipe all its elements with a flannel cloth moistened with kerosene. This is necessary to get rid of excess grease.

In order to set up the multiplier before fishing: unscrew the spool, wipe the ends and support bearings. If the design includes magnetic brakes, then excess must also be removed from them.

Wiping should be done after every fishing. If sand gets into the worm gear located under the line guide, it should be cleaned and then lubricated. After fishing, we loosen the clutch, and before starting fishing, set it to working condition.

Tips for a newbie:

  • We select the braid depending on the weight of the bait. Braid with a diameter of less than 0.3 mm is effective for baits weighing up to 15 g. From 0.3 to 0.4 mm - 15−30 g; 0.4 mm - 30−40 g;
  • The cord should be soft and round in shape. This is necessary to reduce windage, that is, increase the casting distance, as well as increase the sensitivity of the tackle;
  • When choosing braid, give preference to aluminum oxide inserts. Sometimes monofilament lines are suitable.

Review of some models

Among the fishing rods for baitcasting, there are models that attract increased attention from fishermen. They stand out for their performance characteristics, quality and affordable price. Below we will consider the best spinning rods for cartoons, which have earned the trust of domestic lovers of hunting for predatory representatives of the ichthyofauna.

The handle, depending on the model, can be made of cork or EVA. Both are of unsurpassed high quality. It has a reliable reel seat.

Can it be used with a regular spinning rod?

It is not recommended to install the cartoon on a regular spinning rod. The best choice for a multiplier would be a casting spinning rod. It is fairly balanced, has a suitable reel seat, and the required handle length. A casting rod has more rings, their location is convenient for a multiplier.

Main advantages of a baitcasting reel

It was this device that was equipped with the spinning rod, which made the longest cast in the world (it was 278 meters). No inertial coil can provide such an indicator.

The main advantages of the device in question are as follows:

  • Multiplier reels for spinning rods are equipped with direct transmission. It is perfect for catching even the largest fish.
  • The coil mechanism consists of two parallel axes - input and output.
  • The operating principle of the “mult” is similar to the inertial coil mechanism. But additional elements effectively prevent the occurrence of unwanted knots.
  • Casting using this device does not require significant effort. Regardless of the size of the bait, it can be carried out over long distances.

Many experienced anglers from all over the world use the best baitcasting reels for spinning rods. They are also used during fishing competitions.

Types of multipliers

Coils are divided into two types:

  • low-profile - used for light baits and small-diameter fishing lines. They are distinguished by a long casting range;
  • “barrels” are classic baitcasting reels with a high profile, used for medium and large-sized baits. They have increased power and are used in power fishing.

For power fishing

Power fishing reels are used in sea fishing. They are distinguished by a low gear ratio and high power. Power multipliers are effective for landing fish weighing over 5 kg.

Low profile baitcasting reels

Low profile, small size reels provide better casting accuracy and distance. They are used for light baits, thin braids or fishing lines. They are light in weight and have the line layer close to the blank. Casts reach over 50 meters, a good choice for fishing from the shore.

Design and technical characteristics of castings

Multiplier gear, like classic ones, is designed for hunting predatory fish using live bait or artificial bait. A baitcasting reel with fishing line or cord is attached to the rod. But the main feature of casting is that, unlike a classic spinning rod, where the rod plays the main role and the casting distance depends on it, in a multiplier spinning rod, good fishing depends primarily on the multiplier reel.

The main components of multiplier spinning

This:

• A fishing rod, the main difference of which is that the “whip” has an additional element - a trigger, which secures the hand during fishing. Grasping the rod with your hand occurs in such a way that in addition to the “whip”, the angler’s hand also contains a multiplier reel. Rods can vary in the number of rings on the blank, as well as their sizes. The number of rings on cartoon fishing rods is greater than on classic spinning rods. This is due to the specifics of casting with a multiplier spinning rod.

• The multiplier reel, which is the main element of the casting spinning rod, is essentially inertial. The spool is located across the reel. The design of the multi is simpler than that of a classic “meat grinder” for spinning, but at the same time there are more features in working with it.

Casting reels have two types

:

• Barrels that are used for jigging. Often these reels have a line counter installed. These are powerful reels that are also used for catfishing, so the “barrels” are quite bulky and heavy, not very comfortable to use.

• Soap boxes, the most popular type of baitcasting reel. Soap dishes are used for fly fishing. This type of casting reel is used for both light and heavy weights.

The casting range in casting fishing primarily depends on the bait reel. You should choose the right reel for the type of bait it will interact with. You should select the correct test weight of baits that matches the spool.

Also important when choosing a reel is the type of brakes.

. There are several types of brakes:

• Axial type of brake, the correct adjustment of which allows you to avoid “beards” when casting.

• The centrifugal braking system is best suited for bulky types of bait such as wobblers.

• Magnetic brake system is the best option for jigging. The braking system is designed to work best at high speeds.

Some manufacturers combine braking systems in one reel, but it is still better to select the appropriate braking system for each type of fishing.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages of fishing with a multiplier:

  • When fishing, the reel is located directly in the palm of your hand. The tackle is more balanced and sensitive, in comparison with the inertialess one;
  • small total weight of the spinning rod set, about 300 grams;
  • the spool is close to the blank, the rings are set low;
  • ease of manipulation with wobblers;
  • the line does not twist, as it goes straight to the spool;
  • casting range does not depend on the thickness of the fishing line;
  • working with baits of different weights.

Disadvantages of fishing with a baitcasting reel:

  • price;
  • time to master casting techniques;
  • fishing with ultralight baits is not as effective as inertialess bait;
  • relatively low speed of winding the line onto the spool;
  • impossibility of use at temperatures below zero.

Advantages and disadvantages of the multiplier

Advantages of an animator:

  • You can use heavy weight baits;
  • the fishing line does not twist;
  • the center of gravity is concentrated on the form (in the area where the hand works), which is convenient when manipulating the tackle;
  • casting accuracy;
  • ability to control casting;
  • small dimensions;
  • powerful traction;
  • the ability to make long casts;
  • lack of windage during wiring in windy weather;
  • the ability to improve the qualities of the animator through tuning;
  • high sensitivity to bites.

Disadvantages of a baitcasting reel:

  • high cost;
  • a special spinning rod (casting) with upper or spiral placement of rings is required;
  • constant adjustment of the brake system;
  • systematic maintenance;
  • careful operation;
  • not suitable for fishing in winter;
  • discomfort when holding the coil.

Brake

Braking during casting is carried out due to a friction clutch consisting of metal plates, fluoroplastic and a braking system. The friction clutch is needed when playing fish; it is located on the handle and is structurally designed in the form of an asterisk.

Types of brake systems:

  • magnetic braking;
  • centrifugal mechanical braking;
  • combined.

The braking system serves to reduce the inertia of the drum during casting. Typically, models with mechanical braking have 6 weights that can be activated all at once or one at a time. The number of weights included depends on the weight of the bait.

The magnetic braking system is suitable for light baits when the load on the reel is light. It is easier to regulate, but does not perform well with medium and large baits.

Each model is equipped with an axial brake, which is activated before the bait splashes down.

The history of the first multiplier reel

The English name of the multiplier sounds like multiplier, multiplier reel and is literally translated as “multiplying reel”, since in one turn the spool can turn up to 6 rapid revolutions. It is interesting that the mechanism of action of this “multiplying” reel is very similar to that of a watch reel, and some sources indicate that it was watch workshops that first started manufacturing this type of fishing reel...

So, if we go back to 1821 (Kentucky), we will see that this year is significant in that it was then that the “multiplying coil” was first invented by a skilled watchmaker, an excellent jeweler and an avid fisherman, George Snyder. He created this know-how exclusively for his own use, but the reel became so popular that he started producing it for members of his fishing club, where he held the presidency.

Rating of multiplier reels

Budget Chinese multipliers will not perform as well as proven brands. A reel made of inexpensive plastic will most likely quickly become unusable. When purchasing, we recommend considering models from vendors from the USA, Japan, and some European countries (for example, the Swedish manufacturer AbuGarcia). These companies present a large range of models, tested by thousands of anglers.

The top best manufacturers of baitcasting reels look like this:

  • Banax
  • Kosadaka
  • Abu Garcia
  • Shimano
  • Penn International
  • Salmo
  • Daiwa
  • Okuma

Spinning for a multiplier reel

Currently, the range of spinning rods available for purchase is very extensive. But at the same time, there are very few models that were developed specifically for fishing in our natural conditions. In this regard, domestic spinning anglers use various methods to adapt imported fishing rods for fishing in our reservoirs.

Thus, to effectively use a modern baitcasting reel, the selection of a special spinning rod is required. The main feature of such a spinning rod is the “upper” position of the reel, which in turn affects the location of the guide rings and the length of the handle, and also requires a specially shaped reel seat. However, there are other characteristics that should be taken into account when selecting a fishing rod for a multiplier.

In general, spinning rods can be divided into three main groups: those that are designed exclusively for working with a multiplier; rods for use with a spinning reel; universal models.

The intended purpose of the spinning rod depends on which of the three groups a particular rod belongs to. For example, looking at the assortment of the G. Loomis company in the “Musky Series Rods” section, you can see that all the rods are designed for fishing using multipliers. This is due to the fact that these models were created as fairly strong and powerful tools for catching large and strong predators, and therefore the characteristics of the multipliers in such conditions are very appropriate.

At the same time, a number of longer rods for long-distance casting are equipped with special fittings and are intended for use in conjunction with spinning reels.

There is also a less narrowly focused category of fishing rods, unique universal models, with which both multipliers and spinning reels are used. Perhaps, such spinning rods are the most suitable for our region.

Abu Garcia baitcasting reels

These products are very popular. Abu Garcia multiplier reels for spinning rods were practically the first to appear on the fishing tackle market. For the production of individual parts, only metal materials are used. Therefore, the weight of such a product is noticeable. To put it another way, high-strength materials ensure the strength and durability of the device.

High-quality models include multiplier reels for spinning rods “Abu Garcia” 4061 C4 Ambassadeur. They have high quality indicators, and at the same time are noted for their affordable prices. They include five stainless bearings, an aluminum spool, a bronze mechanism and an improved braking system. Despite their status as “soap boxes”, they are quite suitable for fishing for a fairly large specimen.

There is an Abu Garcia 5601C JB baitcasting reel. It is equipped with a barrel-type housing. Manufactured specifically for fishing using a Jerk Bait wobbler. The main difference of this model is the reverse brake system. This variation is made for the left hand. Its main materials are bronze and stainless steel.
