Helicopter gear for winter fishing

Helicopter fishing

Knowing the location of a vast plantation of mollusks and crustaceans, it can be difficult to determine the areas most visited by fish. Therefore, sometimes you have to drill many holes and fish them one by one. But there is an original gear that allows you to simultaneously guard fish in different places - winter helicopter gear. It is used to successfully catch bream, roach, silver bream, white-eye, bluegill, perch and other fish in the Oka.

Design of helicopter gear for winter fishing

Helicopter gear - consists of:

  • a piece of fishing line 15 m long, fixed at one end to a reel.
  • the other end of the fishing line is fixed with a swivel in the eye of a pyramid-type sinker weighing 30–40 grams.
  • A meter-long leash is attached to the swivel, on which 3-4 hooks No. 8-15 are tied sequentially every 20–30 cm (the number is chosen depending on the size of the fish that is intended to be caught).
  • The helicopter ends with an unusual design, shaped like a miniature piece of rail or a block of paper clips glued together. This part of the equipment is made from tin (you can use a tin can). A hole is drilled in one of its sides, strictly in the center; The end of the leash is passed into it, and there it is fixed with a swivel, which is necessary so that the line does not fray.

The “helicopter” design makes it possible to move the leash widely from side to side in a fast current, which makes the bait very attractive, and it is also more easily discovered by the fish. Depending on the fishing conditions, the main line is set with a diameter of 0.2 to 0.25 mm, and the leash with a diameter of 0.1 to 0.14 mm. It doesn’t make sense to use a fishing line of a smaller diameter, because when self-hooking (and this is what Oka anglerfish fishing is designed for), if the fishing does not start immediately, a large fish can break it off.

To catch bream using a helicopter, two or three large bloodworms are placed under the head on each hook. Since bream loves a voluminous bait, a piece of green cambric is sometimes put on the shank of the hook.

To catch roach on a helicopter, you can attach one bloodworm to a small hook, which will make it easier for the fish to swallow the bait.

Nod as a bite alarm

The guard is a smooth willow twig 50–60 cm long, at the end of which a fishing line is secured with a double loop, stretched with a sinker lowered to the bottom. When bitten, the twig bends into the hole. For insurance, the reel is pressed down with something heavy.

Helicopter fishing tactics

If the most catchable places have not yet been determined, these supplies are placed in a wide front. To determine a promising location, sometimes it is enough to install 3-5 “helicopters”. If you find an area where there is not one, but several shellfish plantations located at some distance from each other, then more gear may be required.

The technique of fishing by helicopter in winter is simple. You place the “helicopters” at a distance of 5-20 meters from each other or even further and, walking around your property, look out for where the tackle will work. As already mentioned, during the current the fish often hook themselves. If a bite occurs, you can drill holes near the lucky “helicopter” and then switch to fishing with ordinary float rods designed for fishing in the current.

A. Goryainov: “The Great Latest Encyclopedia of Fishing”

Here is another option for helicopter fishing in winter using jigs. This method may be more successful. And jigs can be replaced with hooks. The design is as follows:

  • On the main line we install a head weight (pyramidal shape is preferred, for less resistance) on a swivel;
  • We install a clip at a distance of 15-30 cm from the load, which will not allow the bait to rise in the thickness;
  • In these 15-30 cm we install a leash on a swivel with our jigs (maybe one large one at the end of the tackle) or hooks. This combination of tackle makes it possible to use our usual fishing rods with nods.
  • The thickness of the main line is 0.2, the leader is from 0.1, but of course it depends on the size of the intended fish.

Design features

The helicopter does not require the use of a winter rod and reel.
In this case, you can get by with just one reel, on which a fishing line with a sinker, a leash and hooks is wound. When assembled, it all looks intricate, but in fact there is nothing complicated in such a design. The helicopter fishing gear diagram for ice fishing is shown in the image.

A piece of monofilament fishing line with a diameter of up to 0.25 mm (the length is selected depending on the depth at the fishing site) is fixed on the reel at one end, and a swivel is first put on the opposite end, and then a sinker in the shape of a bullet or pyramid is tied to it. The weight of the load depends on the strength of the water flow.

As a rule, 40 g is enough. A meter-long leader with approximately half the diameter of the main fishing line is installed on the swivel. 3 or 4 hooks are tied on it at a distance of 20-25 cm from one another. The device ends with a so-called pinwheel, similar to a block of metal staples for a stapler, only larger.

The turntable is one of the main elements of the gear; without it, the helicopter would not be a helicopter. Thanks to this small piece of metal, baited hooks “walk” around in a strong current, attracting passing fish. You can attach bloodworms (if the bite is good in bunches) or a worm to the hooks. By the way, today there are no problems with worms, since they began to be sold in winter in many fishing stores. To make the bait more noticeable, a piece of bright cambric or a small foam ball is placed on the shank of the hooks.

Why can you do without a fishing rod? Its function, as well as that of a bite alarm, is performed by a willow rod about half a meter long. The fishing line is fixed at the thin end with a double loop. The other, thick end of the twig is placed in the snow and hangs over the hole at an angle of 45 degrees. When bitten, its tip bends down. As you can see, everything is simple, and most importantly, very economical. No need to buy a fishing rod and reel, just cut a reel out of foam.

Helicopter fishing tactics

Fishing for crucian carp in winter
The tactics and technique of catching bream using helicopters are quite simple. Several helicopters are placed at a distance from each other of approximately five to fifteen meters. Next, the fisherman can only wait for the bites to start and, if the bites start, take his catch.

At the same time, many fishermen, after the first bite on a helicopter, begin to drill holes near the triggered helicopter and catch bream with a regular float rod.

Who among us has not come to a pond in late autumn full of bright hopes? But having gone ashore and seeing that the night frost had made jig fishing impossible, in most cases, as they say, without a sip of salt, we returned home. The most desperate ones patiently waited for half a day, when the current and wind would break the thinnest ice, after which they threw bait between accumulations of floating sludge. Fishing from a boat using a “helicopter” will also help out when the pike perch, for reasons known to itself, spreads across the reservoir and pecks like a pike, here and there without any pattern, which happens not only in summer, but also quite often in winter. I have several friends who are masters of this fishing method. They do not betray him at all because of conservatism or lack of funds to purchase a spinning rod with a spinning reel. The reason is different. Fishing with a “helicopter” completely satisfies them with its versatility. They can be caught vertically at any time of the year and in almost any weather. In addition to pike perch, prey can be pike, catfish, perch and, as an exception, ide, chub, bream, large roach. And the results, all other things being equal, will be quite competitive compared to other fishing methods. Despite its apparent simplicity, this type of fishing has so many nuances that even an experienced fisherman will find something to improve his skills. And the cost of the gear is good news - they are quite cheap.

So, we will need a boat, a fishing rod, a parachute, a buoy and, if you’re not into it, a landing net or hook. Boat It’s good, of course, if you have a duralumin boat with an outboard motor and plus an echo sounder, hundreds for four conventional units. And if you are one of the crazy ones, like the author, who fishes in the cold from an inflatable boat, then I recommend purchasing a product made from modern materials, similar to those used in the manufacture of awnings for long-range “trucks.” I strongly advise against taking boats that have been used. God forbid you break out on the “rubber band” that was pumped through the exhaust pipe of the car. At one time I was “lucky” to buy a new boat with defective tires, as it turned out later. And one day, when I was raising the anchor, one of the cylinders burst. Without even having time to say “Mom!”, I instantly found myself in the water. Fortunately, it was early autumn and the water was not yet very cold, and the wadded trousers were still collecting dust in the pantry. What can I say, you shouldn’t skimp on safety! Fishing rod. The one used for fishing from ice is also quite suitable for this kind of fishing. But the most convenient is a mini-spinning rod - a “rod” made of titanium or “duralumin” up to a meter long with a rigid nod, equipped with a “Neva” reel. The inertialess one is resting! It is advisable to balance it by weighting the handle in the generally accepted way, which will significantly reduce the load on the hand. They are usually caught using fishing line, because due to the “low weight of the helicopter” it is inconvenient to use “steel”. "Kevlar"? I don't see the point. It is quite possible to get by with “Chernigov” with a diameter of 0.3 mm for a couple of hryvnias. Despite my antipathy to steel leashes, they will almost always be necessary here. The exception is when you fish in a place where meeting a pike is unlikely. The leash is made of “steel” with a cross-section of 0.18 mm, twisted in half, which is connected to the “helicopter” with a clasp.

Winter gear helicopter (parachute) is an effective method of ice fishing, which is used by “penguins” who are fond of fishing in bodies of water with currents. This bottom equipment is used for hunting passive and active underwater inhabitants, and is especially productive for bream, roach and silver bream.

A simple “Helicopter” feeder rig with two nodes is a classic

Catching various fish with a reelless reel in winter, secrets of the game

Installation of the “Helicopter” is quite simple:

  1. We fold the end of the main fishing line in half - 10-15 centimeters and knit it with a Figure Eight knot - we get a loop that serves to attach the feeder.
  2. A little higher, 2-3 centimeters, we knit another Figure Eight knot. This distance between the two knots is used to attach the leash with the hook.

That's it, our simple bottom-feeder rig “Helicopter” with two units is ready!

Attention! The length of the leash should be 10 centimeters greater than the distance from the bottom node to the end of the feeder. That is, if you fold the tackle, the hook is located 10 cm below the feeder. To attach the feeder and leash, a “Noose” knot is used.

To attach the feeder and leash, a “Noose” knot is used.

As is clear from the name above, 2 stoppers are used in the installation of such equipment. They play the role of our Figure Eight knots.

The feeder is also attached to a long loop through a swivel. The same swivel can be installed in place between the two stops to attach the leash.

Stages of creating a unique fishing device:

  1. The fishing line, 120 centimeters long, folds in half.
  2. Stepping back 15 centimeters from the edge of the line, make a figure-eight knot.
  3. A centimeter from the tied knot, tie another exactly the same knot.
  4. Insert the feeder into the large loop.
  5. If the fishing spot is overfed, then instead of a feeder you can use an ordinary weight.
  6. For ease of casting the tackle, it is recommended that its length should not exceed 50 centimeters.
  7. Secure the leash between two knots using the wrap method.

When making your own equipment, several nuances should be taken into account:

  1. If the leash is fixed with a knot, its rotation will be blocked, which will nullify all efforts in preparing a unique equipment.
  2. When using a long leash, natural movement is ensured.

The length of the main line is chosen depending on the depth of the reservoir. Usually 15 meters is quite enough, its diameter should not be more than 0.25 mm - such a fishing line does not get tangled too often. The insert is made from thinner fishing line - about 0.18-0.2 mm.

Its length reaches three meters: every meter a hook with a leash is installed. In principle, the distance between the leashes can be made not too large.

The tackle will look quite attractive, and its catchability becomes higher. You should not install more than three hooks on a helicopter, as this can lead to additional difficulties when attaching bait, and transporting such tackle from one place to another is not very convenient.

The sinker is taken in the shape of an olive or a pear - it depends on the strength of the current. The faster it goes, the heavier it should be. The key element of the gear is the helicopter itself, which looks like a petal made of tin. It is strengthened at the end of the insert.

For this element, take rather thick sheet metal, because too thin one will be deformed and sink worse. The helicopter is slightly bent, a small hole is made in it, through which it will be attached to a carbine.

The equipment called helicopter exists in two versions. One of them is designed for fishing in open water, and the other variety is used by winter anglers. What are the differences between these structures with the same name?

Spring-autumn equipment with a helicopter and two units is a type of feeder installation. The feeder is located at the end of the equipment, and a leash is attached above it, which rotates around the main fishing line. The fish approaches the feeding spot, starting to absorb tasty food. Thanks to the movable leash, she does not feel the catch and confidently swallows the bait with a hook. Most often, self-hooking occurs when the fish moves the feeder from its place

A feeder helicopter helps anglers when catching wary fish in the current. The catch may include peaceful fish species such as roach, silver bream, bream and carp

For winter fishing, craftsmen came up with a slightly different design

It is also used during ice fishing in bodies of water with current. A flat sinker is attached to the end of the rig. Above it, a piece of fishing line is mounted, onto which 3-5 short leashes with hooks are tied. The fishing line with leads is pulled into a line by the current, and the bait moves seductively near the bottom. Winter gear is positioned motionless on the ice. This setup is effective for catching winter bream, chub, roach and perch.

Unusual but effective winter fishing by helicopter

Winter fishing is good because you can fish from literally anywhere in the reservoir. But at the same time, you must first discover the place where this fish is located, especially since in winter it is not very active and prefers to feed somewhere in one area.

How to find this area? Each fisherman has his own secrets, but the main thing here is to cover as much territory as possible in the search. Winter fishing by helicopter meets exactly this condition.

It is enough to see a fishing helicopter once and you will already understand how it works. The main line is lowered to the bottom using a sinker. A leash about a meter long is tied in front of the sinker, to which several hooks or jigs are attached at a distance of about 25-30 cm from each other. A small, preferably tin structure, reminiscent of a block of paper clips for a stapler, is attached to the very end of the leash using a swivel.

This, in fact, is that same helicopter. It is attached to the fishing line strictly in the center across its direction. As soon as the tackle disappears into the water, the sinker sinks to the bottom, and the tin device is carried away by the current, while the leash with hooks is pulled to its entire length. But this is not enough - by rotating, the tin drags the fishing line in different directions, which attracts the fish, which notices the movement of the bait. Simple but effective.

Now let's look at the composition of this gear in detail. The following components are needed:

  • any device for winter fishing with a reel on which the main fishing line is wound;
  • whip or nod;
  • tin pinwheel;
  • main leash, long;
  • short leashes with hooks;
  • swivel;
  • retaining ring for turntable;
  • sinker, better sliding;
  • the main line to which the entire structure is attached.

Here the possibilities of gear are endless , it all depends on the place of fishing, the size of the hooks and bait. Roach and silver bream are caught well with a helicopter, perch often chases after moving bait, and (attention!) in deep-water places you can catch quite large bream, moreover. even in the middle of nowhere.

Often fishermen use an ordinary willow twig to which the main line with a reel is attached. When biting, it bends, this is immediately visible, just do not forget to securely secure the reel with something heavy.

We have already talked about the composition of the gear. Let's take a closer look at the turntable itself. It should not be too large so as not to scare away the fish . The tin is selected from a tin or beer can. It should have good buoyancy and not drag along the bottom. But if you take a very thin sheet metal, it will be deformed by the flow, and rotation will not occur.

Another peculiarity of the tackle is that, rising from the bottom, the spinner will tighten the main leash so that the hooks will be at different heights. In this way, you can calculate those layers of water where fish are more active. Which hook bites more often, such depth and catchability. Having calculated the places where fish gather. You can switch to active fishing using a regular winter fishing rod.

It turns out that to make a turntable we will need strong scissors for cutting tin, pliers for bending it, fishing line, hooks, sinkers and swivels. Another twig for a nod, if you don’t have a factory one.

It is simple and easy to do by hand:

  • bend a pinwheel of the required size into a rail shape; you can make several removable ones of different weights and sizes at once;
  • make a hole strictly in the middle; through which we pass the end of the main leash;
  • we secure the leash with a swivel so that the line does not fray during rotation;
  • we attach hooks on short leashes to the main leash, there is no need to make a lot of them, 3-5 are enough so that the leashes do not get tangled;
  • We attach a sinker and a main leash with hooks to the main line;
  • don't forget the whip.

Of course, it is preferable to conduct such fishing on the current . The spinner will move actively in the water, and the fish usually holds on to changes in current.

Catching pike on girders in winter: advice from experienced fishermen and a special technique

Creating this equipment is easy and quick. It is convenient to use; all the necessary materials are available. However, how to make helicopter gear for winter fishing?

The turntable (the caliber varies within five cm) is made using only thin round tin (for example, cans that contained instant coffee). If you plan to fish in light currents, then it is better to make several lightweight devices by gluing more pieces of hard foam (this will increase their buoyancy). This element is connected to a long leash (polymer fishing line, its diameter is 0.22-0.25 mm, and its length is one and a half meters) with a small swivel

Using this type of fastening or the “loop to loop” method, retreating the same distance, here you need to attach four short leashes (12-15 cm in size) from fishing line (thickness 0.15-0.2 mm), hooks (OWNER No. 12-14, red), place auxiliary white mother-of-pearl beads above them (will attract additional attention). Next, the existing parts need to be tied to the main fishing line (thickness is 0.35-0.45 mm) with a locking ring. Here is a sliding sinker (weighing 60-80 grams, flat, diamond-shaped)

Above it you need to place a cambric (caliber 0.3-0.5 centimeters, size four cm), intended for fixation.

Usually, the assembly of the tackle begins from its end, i.e. from the turntable. It can be made from a piece of tin from a tin can or a coffee or beer can. It should not be very thin so as not to be deformed by a strong current, and at the same time move freely in the water column.

You need to cut the bottom of the jar with a diameter of 6 cm, bend it twice to give greater resistance. The shape of the tin will resemble a small rail. Make a hole in the middle, pass the end of a long leash through it, and secure with a swivel.

It is necessary to prevent chafing of the fishing line. On a long leash, short leashes with hooks 12-15 cm long are hung every 20-30 cm, either using three-sided swivels, or using the “loop-to-loop” method.

The long leash is attached to the main line with a locking ring. At the end of the main line, an olive-shaped sinker is placed using a swivel. The weight of the sinker depends on the speed of the river flow. The other end of the main line is secured to the reel.

DIY helicopter gear for winter fishing

The design consists mainly of what every fisherman has in his stash. This includes fishing line of different thicknesses, swivels, weights, and so on. To be more precise, to make a helicopter fishing tackle with your own hands you will need the following:

  • 20-30 meters of monofilament with a thickness of 0.20 or 0.25 mm;
  • a meter-long piece of fishing line with a diameter of 0.10 to 0.14 mm (for a leash);
  • sinker weighing up to 50 g (sliding or with a soldered swivel);
  • hooks No. 4-6 according to domestic numbering (the size is selected for a specific fish);
  • cambrics for decorating hooks;
  • swivel;
  • dense foam plastic (you can use the remains of facade insulation 2 cm thick);
  • a piece of sheet metal (a canned food container will do).

First you need to prepare the reel and spinner, and also decide on the length of the main fishing line. For helicopter fishing in deep reservoirs, it is worth making a reserve of up to 25-30 meters. It is necessary to cut a reel from a piece of foam plastic with a stationery knife, and a rectangular blank from tin using metal scissors.

Approximate size – 7 x 10 cm (the stronger the current on the pond, the smaller the pinwheel). The long sides of the workpiece are bent with pliers, resulting in an element with sides that looks like a rail. A hole is drilled in one of the sides. Now you can wind the main line onto the reel and start making the leash.

Why is it recommended to make the reel from foam plastic? This material is very light and soft enough to fix hooks in it and easily carry folded gear in your jacket pocket. At the same time, you don’t have to worry about them becoming dull.

Everyone decides for themselves whether to buy a fishing rod and a nod or use a flexible branch cut on the shore from the first bush they come across. This will not affect the results of your fishing in any way. If you plan to fish with several helicopters at once, so to speak, on a wide front, then it is worth equipping them with bells in order to respond to bites in a timely manner.

How to tie a snap

Each fisherman has his own preferences regarding the use of certain elements when equipping a fishing rod. The proposed helicopter mounting options are just an example of classic equipment.

Manufacturing of feeder helicopter

A helicopter with two nodes is made for the feeder. The sequence of operations is as follows.

  • On the main line we sequentially install a bead, a swivel and another bead or another type of limiter.
  • We bend the end of the main line, about 30-40 cm long, 180 degrees. At the point of inflection we make a knot loop. A 10-15 centimeter leash with a feeder will be attached to it.

Tip: to quickly change the feeder, it is recommended to first hang a carabiner on the fishing line.

  • Then we thread the first bead through the double fishing line, which should fit snugly against the knot.
  • Next, we extend the swivel onto the main line. A leash with a hook will be mounted to it.
  • Next we thread the second bead and make another knot at a distance of 15 cm from the first knot. Excess line must be cut off.
  • Now you should equip the formed structure. First, you can attach the leash with the feeder using the loop-to-loop method.
  • The length of the working leash is selected so that the hook is 10-50 cm below the feeder with the fishing line stretched.

Read about methods of tying leashes here.

Please note: the longer the working leash, the more convincing the bait will look in the water column. However, with a long rig it can be difficult to cast. The selected leash is attached to the swivel

There is a second way to install the equipment. It differs from the previous one in that the leashes are prepared immediately with a swivel, as in the next photo.

Winter helicopter installation

Making a winter helicopter has its own tricks.

  • First, a carabiner and a silicone stopper are threaded onto the main line.
  • A loop is made at the end of the base to which a sinker or feeder can be attached. In this form, the tackle can be wound onto a reel or reel.
  • The diverter leash is made from several pieces of fishing line 0.15-0.20 mm long, 0.3-0.4 m long. The prefabricated structure looks like this. We take a three-sided swivel, to the two ends of which we tie pieces of fishing line. We also attach a swivel to each end of the fishing line.

Recommendation: the number of swivels should not exceed 5 pieces. We make knotted loops at both ends of the resulting leash. One of them is needed to connect to the main line, and a “tensioner” will be mounted to the other end.

  • Working leashes with hooks are attached to the side branches of the swivels. They are made from monofilament or fluorocarbon with a diameter of 0.10...0.15 mm and a length of 10-15 cm. Hooks or jigs are selected according to the size of the fish. We wind the resulting equipment separately on a reel.
  • The “tensioner” is used when the current is weak; it can be made from the bottom of an aluminum can of beer or carbonated drink. Carefully cutting off the bottom around the circumference, a hole is made in the center. A wire loop is inserted into it and soldered on the inside. The retractable leash line is attached to the loop.

When fishing with a winter helicopter, a sinker is first lowered into the hole. Then a retractable leash is attached to the carabiner on the main line. The “tensioner” is lowered first (if there is a need for it). Then the bait is attached to the first hook, and the leash is sent into the water. Similarly, each subsequent hook with bait is lowered into the hole. The position of the baits in the water can be adjusted by the length of the working leashes, the “tensioner”, and the size of the baits.

What will be required for production?

  1. whip;
  2. main line 10-15 m long, 0.22-0.25 mm in diameter;
  3. fishing line for a leash 3 m long with a diameter of 0.15-0.2 mm;
  4. reel;
  5. swivel;
  6. retaining ring;
  7. cambric with a diameter of 0.3-0.5 cm and a length of 3-4 cm;
  8. sinker weighing 40-50 g;
  9. hooks No. 12-14;
  10. tin pinwheel.

What is a helicopter tackle for winter fishing?

The thick cover of ice on the river makes it possible to explore any part of the reservoir. You can walk to any corner that is inaccessible in summer. In order not to spend long hours searching for fish, many amateurs use homemade devices that allow them to quickly catch animals over large areas. A “helicopter” can also be considered such a catchy homemade gear. It is designed to successfully catch peaceful and predatory aquatic inhabitants, such as roach, bluegill, white-eye, bream and perch.

Then, on the reel, you need to assemble equipment, very similar to the one that many people use in the summer when fishing with a donka with a rubber shock absorber: approximately every 50 cm, a leash with a hook is tied to the fishing line. There should be 4-5 leashes in total (photo 3). It is better to take hooks from the thinnest wire so that the bloodworms do not leak out when hooked and remain attractive to bream.

In winter, schools of bream often feed not at the very bottom: depending on weather conditions, they move in the water column, changing the horizons of their sites. It is clear that in such situations, any attempt to catch bream in winter with gear that is configured exclusively for fishing from the bottom is doomed to complete failure. It happens that you sit in a pit for most of a winter day, and the catch is only ruffs. And so is bream hunting! In such a situation, winter gear called a “helicopter” can help out.

Making this winter tackle for bream with your own hands is quite easy. First, cut out a square measuring 6x6 cm, preferably from an aluminum plate. But if you don’t have the necessary material at home, then you can get by with an ordinary can of deodorant or shaving foam, but you should choose a can with thick walls, otherwise the original part will often become deformed and will have to be constantly straightened.

The resulting square after all the manipulations should be bent into something like the letter “P” so that each side of this “letter” has a width of 2 cm. Then a hole should be drilled in the center of the resulting part (photo 1).

Now you need to take a piece of steel wire about 5 cm long. An ordinary paper clip will do for this. At one end of the wire we make a loop into which we insert a swivel, we thread the other end into the central hole and make another loop, but without the swivel. We came out with a so-called propeller (photo 2).

You need to leave a meter of fishing line on both sides of the winter rig and tie a regular swivel to one end, and the one located on the propeller axis to the other.

Next we take a winter fishing rod with a fishing line with a diameter of 0.25–0.3 mm. We thread the fishing line into a sliding sinker, the weight of the sinker depends on the strength of the current at the fishing site, and tie a fastener to it (photo 4). Directly while fishing, you will need to attach a swivel from the reel to this fastener (photo 5). That's it, you can start catching bream.

Tips for a fisherman: Which fishing line to choose for winter fishing - Tips for a beginner

When fishing with a helicopter, the hole must be drilled at a slight angle so that the fishing line does not crash into the ice. Having connected all the components of the winter helicopter rig, we begin to lower it into the hole. Once under water, the propeller is wound up by the current and pulls leashes with hooks. Next we lower the sliding weight. When the sinker reaches the bottom, it will be possible to adjust the height of the propeller by releasing the line from the fishing rod.

It would be a good idea to have an echo sounder with you on the ice - with its help it is much easier to determine what depth a school of bream prefers at a given time. But even without an echo sounder, you can experiment and successfully catch bream using a winter helicopter rig.

Well, that's all. I hope that the time spent making winter helicopter rigs with your own hands will result in an enjoyable catch of trophy bream for you.

It is simple and easy to do by hand:

Materials and tools

Manufacturing process

It is simple and easy to do by hand:

Helicopter fishing in winter gives the angler the opportunity to fish a significant area of the river bottom from one hole. There are many advantages to this type of gear. Having found a cool spot with fish, you can study it in more detail with a jig or float rod.

Preparation and storage

The process of knitting leashes for a feeder is not complicated - a figure eight loop and a hook at the end. It is more important to choose the correct fishing line diameter and length. This can be done manually, or using loopers or knotters. If you need to prepare a large quantity, it is convenient to use a special crochet crocheting machine.

It is convenient to store tied feeder leashes in special leash holders. You can use store-bought options. However, it is easier and cheaper to make a leash with your own hands in the form of a cylinder of foam (polyurethane). The hooks are stuck directly into the foam, the fishing line is wrapped around, and the loops are secured with stationery needles. Read more about leashes.

Manufacturing of feeder equipment “helicopter and two units”

The “helicopter and two units” equipment for the feeder is one of the simplest to manufacture, both technically and in terms of the number of components used in installation.

Equipment “helicopter and two nodes” for feeder

Line selection

It is best to use fluorocarbon fishing line to make a “helicopter”. This choice is explained primarily by its rigidity. In addition, the advantages of these lines are their low visibility in water and resistance to mechanical damage.

If fluorocarbon is not available, you can use regular monofilament fishing line, choosing the stiffest one available.

Braided cords are not suitable for making installations because of their softness - equipment knitted from braid will constantly get tangled. For the same reason, the equipment is knitted separately, and not directly on the main line.

Hook selection

The choice of hook for equipment depends on the fishing conditions:

  • the size of the hook for the equipment is selected based on which attachment will be used;
  • The shape of the hook may be different. In most cases, feeder hooks with a ring bent outward and the hook point directed along the fishing line work well. Small carp hooks can be used to catch carp;
  • the thickness of the wire from which the hook is made should be small to reduce the weight of the hook, since fishing is carried out with a slowly sinking bait.

It is advisable to use high-quality hooks produced by well-known companies - Gamakatsu, Owner, WMC, etc. The use of cheap low-quality hooks can ruin fishing with frequent trips and unsuccessful attempts to hook fish.

Using a feeder feeder

This equipment usually uses standard mesh feeders. In some cases, you can use cage feeders for maggots or bloodworms. The choice of feeder depends on the strength of the current, the depth at the fishing site and the casting distance:

  • in reservoirs with weak, inconspicuous currents, light feeders made of plastic mesh are used. It is advisable that the feeder have stabilizer wings that allow it to float up quickly - this will reduce the likelihood of getting caught;
  • For fishing in the middle reaches, cylindrical feeders made of metal mesh are suitable;
  • in strong currents, it is better to use metal feeders of rectangular or triangular cross-section, since they are the least likely to be carried away by water;
  • the weight of the feeder should provide the necessary casting distance and reliable retention of the equipment at the bottom.

Since helicopter fishing involves self-hooking fish, you need to use feeders weighing at least 40 g.

When choosing a feeder, you must take into account that the weight of an empty feeder and a feeder filled with bait can differ significantly

This is especially important when conditions require the use of heavy feeders, with a weight close to the upper limit of the test range of the rod

Feeder feeders and their varieties

Equipment diagram “helicopter and two units”

As already mentioned, this equipment is one of the simplest. In many ways it is similar to the Gardner loop. The main differences are the solid fixation of the feeder and the method of attaching the leash.

To install such equipment, you must:

  • take a piece of fluorocarbon fishing line of a suitable diameter and, fold it in half, tie a loop 10–12 cm long with a double knot;
  • stepping back from the knot by 1–2 cm, tie another double knot, after which cut the shorter of the free ends of the fishing line near the knot, and tie a swivel to the second one to attach it to the main fishing line;
  • the length of the equipment should be from 30 to 50 cm;
  • the feeder is attached using the “loop-to-loop” method directly to the equipment or through a swivel;
  • the leash is also attached loop to loop between two nodes, which limit the movement of the leash along the equipment;
  • The length of the leash can be from 30 to 70 cm, depending on the activity of the fish - the better the bite, the shorter the leash;
  • The diameter of the leader depends on the type and size of fish being caught.

Equipment diagram “helicopter and two units”

Some fishermen attach the leash using a swivel freely rotating on the mounting line, limited at the top and bottom not only by knots, but also by beads. However, this method complicates installation and does not provide any particular advantages. The use of this option is justified only in carp fishing.

Winter tackle “helicopter” for catching bream with your own hands

Fishing by helicopter in winter

Fishing is a process that cannot be rushed. In order for the activity to be crowned with a good catch, first of all, you should take your time. In fishing, haste is for losers.

If you want to get the maximum benefit and results from your time spent on the river, use these simple tips:

  1. Pheromone additives actively influence fish and attract them in any weather, regardless of water temperature.
  2. To increase your catch, try increasing the sensitivity level of your rig.
  3. When choosing a fishing spot, approach it with all responsibility. Make yourself comfortable and don't forget to feed the fish.
  4. Choose good bait and bait it correctly. Sometimes even the best quality bait is completely useless if it is “presented” to the fish incorrectly.
  5. A real fisherman does not go on vacation with only one bait. Grab some bait. In some cases, replacing the bait radically changes the bite situation. Include the minimum set of baits: bloodworms, worms, maggots, maggots, pearl barley, dough, pheromone baits, aromatic additives.
  6. If you are familiar with the fishing spots you are going to, stock up on a minimum set of gear. But if this fishing spot is new to you, collect all the “equipment”. The situation on the reservoir directly depends on the weather, so keep an eye on the forecasts so that you will definitely know what gear will be relevant for the planned date of your trip.
  7. Use at least simple techniques from sport fishing. Keep an eye on your gear and bait. Don't wait - react quickly.
  8. When there is no bite for a long time, many fishermen relax and do not carefully monitor the float. They don’t even realize that they are missing a lot of unnoticed bites, missing out on the catch.

Try to change the bait more often and be more active, and then your fishing will be effective, and your catch may be replenished with a trophy fish.

When was the last time you caught dozens of HEAVY pikes/carp/bream? We always want to get results from fishing - to catch not three perches, but ten kilogram pikes - what a catch! Each of us dreams of this, but not everyone can do it.

It can be prepared at home or bought in fishing stores. But stores are expensive, and to prepare bait at home, you need to spend a lot of time, and, to be fair, homemade bait does not always work well.

You know that disappointment when you buy bait or prepare it at home and only catch three or four bass?

So maybe it’s time to use a truly working product, the effectiveness of which has been proven both scientifically and in practice on the rivers and ponds of Russia?

gives the same result that we cannot achieve on our own, especially since it is cheap, which distinguishes it from other means and there is no need to spend time on production - you order it, they deliver it and off you go!

Of course, it is better to try once than to hear a thousand times. Moreover, now is the season! A 50% discount on your order is a great bonus!

How to fish with a “helicopter and two knots”

The technology for using such equipment is not much different from the use of other feeder equipment, but there are minor differences:

You should feed the biting area with 15-20 casts of the feeder without a leash and hook. Using a leash with a hook, you need to bait a bloodworm or maggot

The weight of the bait should be minimal so that it can hang in the water column or slowly sink to the bottom. Sometimes it is necessary to play along with the tip of the rod to attract the attention of the fish. When biting, the fish hooks itself, as the weight of the feeder itself acts. As a rule, feeders with a weight of about 100g or more are used during currents, if there is a strong current

The weight of the feeder is selected in such a way that the current cannot move the tackle from its place, otherwise it will tangle the tackle and fishing will not work

As a rule, feeders with a weight of about 100 g or more are used during currents if there is a strong current. The weight of the feeder is chosen in such a way that the current cannot move the tackle from its place, otherwise it will tangle the tackle and fishing will not work.

In order to cast heavy feeders you need a powerful rod that can withstand such a load. Feeder rods are especially designed for such conditions and are capable of ensuring real success in feeder fishing.

Fishermen will come up with everything they can to outwit their prey: they use innovative baits, improve fishing gear and methods. One of the areas of innovation is the modification of equipment.

In this review, we’ll talk about one tricky setup for bottom fishing in currents, which is known as a helicopter feeder rig and two knots. Let's consider the pros and cons of the design, its scope, and, most importantly, how to properly tie it with your own hands.

Instructions for creating a helicopter rig

The first step is to decide on the length of the fishing line; it depends on the depth of the reservoir. You won't need more than 20 meters. Only fishing line with a thickness of less than 0.25 mm is suitable so as not to get tangled.

At the end of the main part, a three-meter insert is made from fishing line with a thickness of 0.18-0.2 mm . A short leash with a hook is tied every meter. The distance between the hooks can be made smaller, but larger is undesirable. Installing additional hooks is non-functional, causing difficulties with transportation and use.

At the end of the structure, a heavy (up to 50 g) olive- or pear-shaped sinker , capable of withstanding the force of the current, is attached through a locking ring.

The spinner is an element due to which this fishing tackle is called a helicopter. It is made of thick tin or steel . It is a U-shaped sheet of metal with a hole in the center. You can make this by bending a metal plate in two places. The recommended size for a turntable in a flat state is 6*6 cm, sides - 2 cm. The angle at which the plate is bent should be about 90 degrees, but you should not be tied to the number. The main thing in a propeller is its ability not to be deformed by the flow.

A carabiner is threaded through the hole in the turntable for fastening.

The process of assembling a helicopter with your own hands step by step:

  1. Wind the line onto the reel.
  2. Attach the sinker to the reel.
  3. Use a swivel to secure the hooks and pinwheel.

For those who are used to fishing with a fishing rod, attaching a reel to it will not be a problem. If there is no cambric, a thin bendable branch is attached to the structure. Its bending will indicate the presence of a catch.

Materials used

When constructing a helicopter rig, special attention is paid to the choice of materials. For tying rigs, it is advisable to choose a thick, rigid fishing line: monofilament or, which is much more preferable, fluorocarbon

The rigidity of the tackle ensures a stable position of its elements on the bottom and prevents possible overlaps and entanglements. At the same time, you need to try to minimize the thickness of the lines and the size of the hooks.

The diameter of the fishing line used depends on the strength of the river flow and, as a consequence, on the mass of the feeder or sinker used: the higher the flow speed, the thicker the equipment should be.

Advice! Approximately with a load of 100 grams, installation should be carried out on 0.25 mm monofilament or 0.35 mm fluorocarbon.

Bottom line

“Helicopter” fishing equipment with a couple of knots actually proves its effectiveness. More and more often, anglers are using a feeder with this system. The advantage of the system is the ability to improve it, depending on the type of fish, season, current speed and other “fishing” factors.

Effective and catchy tackle for feeder fishing will always attract the attention of fans of this topic. Some of them sometimes have a rather original name, such as a design called a helicopter and two nodes

Basic characteristics of fishing with a helicopter on a feeder

Another reason why I want to share information about it with you is because of its excellent capabilities for fishing in currents and self-hooking fish. It is believed that on rivers, helicopter feeder equipment will be one of the best solutions. Moreover, the higher the current speed, the better it will show its qualities, especially when catching any white fish (bream, crucian carp, roach, tench, carp, etc.).

Our bait, being at a distance from the feeder, will actually hang in the very middle of the water layers under the influence of the current. When fishing with a helicopter, place the rod at an angle of 45 degrees to the surface of the earth. Even the name of such equipment for beginners is due to the fact that the leash attached to it tends to rotate freely around the main fishing line, reminiscent of helicopter blades.

As already mentioned, in a body of water with a current, the bait rises above the ground, which increases the opportunities for the angler. In addition, I like to change the length of the leader, the weight of the baits, the size of the hooks to achieve the “falling effect”. Like any gear, you need to strive to master the helicopter current rig to perfection. I offer readers a few basic nuances:

the place where you intend to fish, it makes sense to feed a couple of dozen casts of one feeder for fishing in the current without a hook (at the same time, get the fish used to the feeder a little);

the use of light-weight baits (bloodworms, maggots) will allow the hook to hang in the water column or sink to the bottom, but extremely slowly, which always attracts underwater inhabitants;

periodic tapping (shaking) with the tip of the rod will transfer the amplitude of movement to the bait;

Keep in mind that many bites are cutting in themselves - this happens due to the hooking of the fish at the moment of jerking the feeder.

Making a helicopter feeder rig with your own hands

As with all other types of rigs, to make it I will need the main fishing line and for the leash, a hook, a feeder with a weight, and a swivel with a fastener. To catch active bottom fish, I use a thin long hook. As a working line, we take fluorocarbon with a cross-section from 0.25 to 0.35 mm (estimate the thickness yourself based on the weight of the feeder and the desired prey).

Unlike monofilament, this material has less visibility in water, but greater rigidity. When making such feeder gear, you can resort to the services of almost any type of feeder, but often those that resemble a container for storing blowfly larvae (maggot) are used.

So, our procedure will be something like this:

  1. We fold the 120-centimeter piece of scaffolding in half;
  2. on 15 centimeters of the resulting segment we make a knot, maybe like a figure eight;
  3. at a centimeter distance from the knot, we knit another similar knot;
  4. Insert a feeder into the resulting large loop in a way convenient for you (instead of a feeder, you can also use a weight if the fishing area is well fed);
  5. for comfortable casting of the tackle, it is necessary that its total length be no more than half a meter;
  6. All that remains is to secure the leash between 2 knots using the cape method.

The installation of the helicopter structure can be considered complete. As a result, we got a 15-centimeter loop along which the feeder weight slides in free fall. The tackle is intended for actively hunting fish that will not swim past the bait, moving against the current to the smell of bait.
