Kubenskoye Lake, Vologda Region: description, fishing features and reviews

Geographical position

A lake of glacial origin, formed among a relict forest on a swampy lowland filled with melt water from a glacier retreating to the north. Located in the upper reaches of the Northern Dvina, 30 km north of Vologda. Lake Kubenskoe extends in the direction from southeast to northwest, its length is 54 km, width - 12 km, area - approximately 370 sq. km. The sizes fluctuate due to significant spring floods and the filling of the reservoir with sediment. During the period of summer and autumn rains, its area can reach 410 square meters. km. Lake Kubenskoye is located at an altitude of 110 meters above sea level.

Description of the lake

The forested eastern bank slopes gently down to the water and is often flooded; on the western bank there is a small hill. The average depth of Lake Kubenskoye is 1.2-2 meters, but during the period of snowmelt the water can rise to 13 meters.

To regulate the water level and ensure navigation, the Znamenitaya dam was built in 1834 on the Sukhona, 7.5 km from the source. This actually turned Lake Kubenskoye into a reservoir with controlled flow. In winter and until the end of the spring flood on the Sukhona, the base of the lock sinks to the bottom, as the surge of melt water creates a reverse flow on the river.

Lake Kubenskoye (Vologda region) is fed by the waters of more than thirty rivers, its drainage basin is 14,400 square meters. km. The largest tributary, the Kubena River, 368 km long, flows into the reservoir from the east, forming a huge delta. The second largest river, the Uftyuga (117 km), flows into the lake from the north. Smaller tributaries: Porozovitsa (34 km) in the north and Bolshaya Elma (60 km) in the west. Ten more rivers are 10-20 km long. The lake drains through the Sukhona River, which flows in two streams from the southeast.

The minimum water level in the lake is observed in March, it reaches a maximum in May, and declines in June. During the period of reverse flow on the Sukhona, the water in Lake Kubenskoye rises by 30-40 cm per day. In summer, storms and storms are frequent on the lake; it freezes in late November - early December, becoming free of ice in late April - early May.

Fishing on Lake Kubenskoye

Lake Kubenskoye. Vologda Region.

In the]Vologda region[/anchor], in the Northern Dvina basin, at 110 meters above sea level, the fresh waters of Lake Kubenskoye spread over a huge distance. It is 54 kilometers long and 12 kilometers wide, occupying an area from 370 to 407 km 2

depending on the volume of melted snow. A drop in water level is usually observed in autumn.

The lake has an almost regular ribbon shape. It arose as a result of the melting of the glacier and the flow of melt water into the low-lying area. Lake Kubenskoye cannot boast of great depths. On average they are 1.2 meters, and the maximum values do not exceed 13. The predominant bottom soil is sand, which, together with shallow water and good warming up in the summer months, makes Lake Kubenskoye attractive for a beach holiday. In deep places the bottom is covered with silt.

The lake freezes towards the end of November and opens up by May. Three dozen rivers replenish the lake with water, including the largest ones - Uftyuga and Kubena, and it is carried away by only one - Sukhona. A dam with a shipping lock was built at its mouth. This entire complex structure sinks to the bottom during the flood, since during this period the water in the Sukhona from the Vologda River to the lake flows backwards due to the pressure of the flood waters. Almost as a result of the creation of hydraulic structures, Lake Kubenskoye turned into a reservoir of drinking water for the needs of the residents of Vologda.

The reservoir is navigable, although due to the presence of coastal sandbanks and rocky ridges, the fairway for the passage of ships is quite narrow. The lake has access to the Volga through the North Dvina system and the Sheksna River.

Most of the shores are covered with swamps, where low-growing pine forest grows. The lake itself is covered with sedges, naiads and water lilies, and the shallow water is overgrown with reeds and reeds, in which thousands of wild birds find shelter.

On the shore, along which an asphalt road is laid, stands the village of Kubenskoye, and on the opposite, surrounded by forests and swamps, are the villages of Ust-Kubenskoye and Chirkovo.

The diversity of tributaries and abundant vegetation provide a wealth of fish. On weekends alone, up to two thousand amateurs fish on the lake, whose catch per year is at least 75 tons. Among the main commercial fish are perch, bream, ruffe, pike, roach, pike perch and ide. Somewhat less common in the catch are crucian carp, silver bream, chub, dace and burbot, and with some luck you can catch asp or sterlet. Here you can catch Kubensky nelma, an almost endangered species of fish, and a local landmark - nelmu (a type of whitefish), which is not found anywhere else.

The catch of perch weighs up to half a kilo, but it bites so actively on gear with a 5-gram load that in a few hours you can catch more than a bucket. Pike are caught on average at two kilograms, they bite on a spinner and a long, at least 10 centimeters, weakly burrowing wobbler on three-meter rods in places with large differences in water level.

They catch it and pike perch from a boat using a spinning rod, casting, jig, track, offset and any other tackle that does not cling to the grass. Predatory fish can be caught by trolling. The maximum bite is observed from four to eight in the morning.

From the west in the direction of Vologda, a stone ridge stretches along the bottom, near which perch, pike and burbot are found, but lures often get caught, which makes fishing in these places especially difficult. Pike in this area are better caught on the path if the boat does not move parallel to the ridge, but crosses it in the direction from the shore. A floating wobbler performs well on rocks. The pike produces the maximum number of bites when playing with the bait: twitching, releasing, reaching closer to the surface.

Recently, there is less fish in the lake due to poaching and weak control by the fisheries inspectorate.

Overgrown, swampy shores dictate the need for fishing from a boat, which can be rented in coastal villages or at tourist centers. There are many equipped places for fishermen to stay along the shore, but it is better to take firewood with you. The lake has a complex character; winds and storms blow across it, and thunderstorms rumble with unprecedented force above it.

There are several tourist centers along the banks, among which the most popular are: “HillSide”, “Morino Estate”, “Island” and “Kubensky Bereg”.

Story

The lake takes its name from the Kubena River. The ending "-ena" is probably Finno-Ugric, meaning "big water", and the meaning of the root "cube" is unknown. Presumably, it comes from the language of disappeared tribes that lived in ancient times on the territory of the Vologda region.

In the 11th-12th centuries, the region north of Lake Kubenskoye became dependent on the Novgorod Republic, which established a trade route along the Sheksna across the lake to the Sukhona, and then along the Northern Dvina to the White Sea. The Kubensky lands themselves were the possession of the Rostov-Suzdal princes, and later there were appanage principalities of the Yaroslavl Rurikovichs.

In 1692, young Peter I spent two months on the lake, after experiments with the construction of ships on Lake Pereyaslavl, he was looking for a larger body of water. The king was impressed by the length of the lake, but was greatly disappointed by the results of measuring the depths.

In the 19th century, the lake was included in the North Dvina water system with the help of the Alexander Wirtembergsky Canal (now the North Dvina Canal), dug in 1825-1829.

A comprehensive study of Lake Kubenskoye was carried out in 1972 by the Vologda-Arkhangelsk hydrographic expedition.

Flora and fauna

The lake flora is represented by 57 plant species. About 4,800 hectares are occupied by dense thickets of sedge, forming floodplain meadows at the mouth of the Kubena, at the confluence of the Uftyuga and in several other areas. Reed thickets cover an area of 540 hectares, and amphibian knotweed massifs approach 2000 hectares in area and are also located near river mouths. Sparse thickets of pondweed cover an area of 7,000 hectares.

Fishing on Lake Kubenskoye is always rich. It is home to 19 species of fish: perch, ide, bream, ruffe, sorog, crucian carp, gudgeon, eel, chub, asp, dace, roach, sabrefish, bleak, pike, nelma, or nelmushka (a local variety of whitefish, quite rare), smelt, silver bream, burbot. Sterlet is still occasionally seen. Since the 1950s, pike perch, which had not previously been found in the lake, have been increasingly appearing. Ten species of fish are objects of industrial fishing, the volumes of which are steadily declining due to shallowing and pollution of the lake.

Attractions

In addition to the natural beauty, the main attraction is the Spaso-Kamenny Monastery, one of the oldest in the Russian north, built on a vow in 1260 by Prince Gleb Vasilkovich Belozersky, who escaped during a strong storm. In 1528, Grand Duke Vasily III visited him. In Soviet times, it was abolished, and the premises were given to a fish factory. The Transfiguration Cathedral was blown up in the late 1930s and restored by 2009. In the largest coastal village of Ustye there is an ancient church-chapel, a local history museum, and nearby the Lysogorsky Monastery.

Spaso-Kamenny Monastery

In the middle of the lake there is an island on which the Spaso-Kamenny Monastery, one of the oldest in the North, was built. It was founded in 1260 by Prince Gleb Vasilkovich. He did this in gratitude for saving his ship during a powerful storm on the lake. During Soviet times, the monastery was destroyed. Now the Spaso-Kamenny Monastery is being revived. The restoration was initiated by local resident A. Pligin. Today the monastery serves as a real decoration of the lake. The crosses on its domes shine bewitchingly over the majestic surface of the water.

Lake Kubenskoe is also associated with the name of Peter I. It is believed that he wanted to build the Russian fleet here. But the shallow depth of the lake prevented this. The tsar also liked the local nelmushka. Peter ordered to call this fish “royal” and treat it only to the most distinguished guests. If you are lucky enough to catch Kubensky salmon, then make a wish. Locals believe that it will definitely come true.

Fishing

The lake's fish stocks are gradually depleted, the volume of industrial catch has been falling for several decades: from 616 tons in 1938 to 285 in 1953, only 72 tons in 2013. In the 1990s, a huge amount of fish was caught by poachers (it is estimated that the total annual catch can exceed 900 tons). The fish population is negatively affected by the shallowing of the lake, as a result of which traditional spawning grounds are not covered with water, as well as by abnormally high temperatures for several years, which especially affected the number of ruffe.

Industrial pollution also plays a significant role: on the banks of the reservoir there are more than 180 agricultural farms, two pig farms and various production facilities. Hopes for the restoration of fish populations are associated with projects for regulating the flow of the Sukhona, which could raise the average water level from the current 1.2 meters to the previous two meters.

Due to the extreme shallowness of the water, recreational fishing in the summer is only possible from boats, which are available in abundance to local residents, who rent them out to tourists. In order to protect nelma, fishing is prohibited at its spawning grounds in the area of the mouth of the Kubena and the confluence of the Pelma and Neiga, three kilometers deep into the water area. In the rest of the lake, this fish, excluded from the Red Book in 1999, is allowed to be caught.

Unlike tourists, who mostly arrive by passenger water transport, amateur fishermen often complain about the lack of convenient access roads to the lake, but equipped fishing bases have been created on the lake itself.

The main object of fishing for amateurs is perch, which is found in large quantities, although on average its weight does not exceed 100-250 grams. The bite forecast on Lake Kubenskoye is always good, except during high water. The bite reaches its peak towards the end of the summer-autumn season.

Winter fishing

Winter fishing on Lake Kubenskoye is very popular. Local fishermen are well aware of the places where perch accumulate in winter on the shallows near river mouths. A week after the freeze-up, the most active bite begins, lasting until the end of January. February and especially March are the least successful periods for winter fishing. When the ice begins to melt, the fish begin to bite again. Experienced fishermen catch perch from floating ice floes, which they reach by boat. They are caught in winter using a balance beam, a jig and a winter spinner. With a good bite, you can get 30 kg of fish from one hole. White fish are more difficult to catch in winter than perch. Only right before the ice drifts do roach and bream bite well.

Reviews about Lake Kubenskoye

Tourists say that there is something to see here. You can have a pleasant time on the shore, take a swim on a hot summer day. All visitors try to visit the Spaso-Kamenny Monastery on an island right in the middle of the lake. Travelers also speak positively about the recreation centers located in the vicinity of the lake, where they can stay. Most of the bases are located along the Kubene River; there is also a camp site near the Ustye. At some distance from the lake there is a cozy “Morino Estate”, and on the shore of Bolshaya Yelma there is a mini-hotel “Omogaevsky”. There are especially many enthusiastic reviews about the base for the whole family “Exopark Vysokovskoye”, where ostriches, peacocks, pheasants and representatives of the local predatory fauna live. It is located upstream of the Kubena.

You can also hear reviews from hunters who come to Lake Kubenskoye for game. The waterfowl hunting season opens in the spring, but there is little game here. The surrounding forests are home to elk, bears and wild boars, which are hunted in autumn and winter.

Amateur fishermen, sharing their impressions of fishing on this lake, talk about a good bite and always a big catch.

Ice fishing on Lake Kubenskoye

> Where to fish > Fishing in Russia and around the world > Ice fishing on Lake Kubenskoye

Perhaps the largest lake in the Vologda region is Lake Kubenskoye.
This lake is located near Vologda and in winter is very popular among urban fishermen. In summer, getting to this lake is quite problematic. There are few suitable approaches to the reservoir and fishing here is mainly possible only from a boat. But in winter the situation changes dramatically and ice fishing in Lake Kubenskoye
is a holiday for many fishermen of Vologda and the surrounding area.

Almost on any day, but especially on weekends throughout the winter period, in the morning you can see lines of snowmobiles and automobiles heading towards the lake. Although the traffic police fines violators for driving cars onto the lake, this does not stop many. Many fishermen leave their cars on the road or in nearby settlements and walk several kilometers to the lake.

Today, fishing bases have appeared in the vicinity of the lake; they provide fishermen with overnight accommodation and organize delivery of fishermen directly to the place of fishing. One such base, “Ostrov,” is located in the small village of Lesozavod, from which it is very close to good fishing spots on the lake.

This lake is more than 54 km long and about 14 km wide. The total area of the lake is 370 km2. Lake Kubenskoye does not differ in depth; on the contrary, it is considered very shallow, the greatest depths here do not exceed 11-13 m. The average depth is no more than 1.2-1.5 m. The structure of the bottom is sandy or silty-sandy and very dense. There are practically no holes in the lake. In winter, the lake becomes very shallow and hundreds of meters from the shoreline the ice lies almost at the bottom.

There are several stone ridges in the lake, which are well known to many local fishermen. In winter, only in the middle of the lake can you find depths where the distance to the bottom is more than 2 m.

Ice fishing in Lake Kubenskoye

mainly aimed at pike perch, perch, pike, bream, silver bream, roach, chub, ide, burbot, dace and of course ruffe, but the main prey in this reservoir is perch and roach, of which there are a huge number in the reservoir. And although the catches are dominated by perch weighing 150-250 grams, humpback whales are also often caught.

If the place is chosen well, then from one hole some anglers manage to haul in about 30 kg, and sometimes more, of perch per day. In winter, perch prefers to stay near stone ridges, or in places where small rivers flow into the lake. And closer to spring, large schools of perch gather near the confluence of the Porozovitsa, Uftyug, and Kubena rivers.

In the winter season, perch is caught from the ice until the ice melts, using jigs, balance beams and perch spoons. Peak activity occurs a week after freeze-up and until the end of January. In February, activity usually decreases, but in certain places and on certain days there are very good catches. The worst perch bite is in mid-March. However, winter fishing for perch in Lake Kubenskoye

at the end of the season it again enters a peak of high activity. The best bite comes when the ice has almost melted, but has not yet completely disappeared. Sometimes you have to get to such ice floes by boat.

Belle in winter on Lake Kubenskoye is caught much worse than perch. Only on the last ice do bream and large roach and silver bream bite very well. There is also a lot of ruffe in the lake, but due to the fact that the summers have become hotter than before, its number has decreased, and the ruffe has become smaller, not like before. However, at times this prickly bully gathers in flocks and pesters fishermen with his incessant biting.

The lake has a unique species that is not found in any other body of water in the world. This fish is called “nelmushka”. This fish belongs to the genus of whitefish, its meat has an extraordinary taste and therefore it is a desired prize for any angler who fishes in this reservoir. In the summer, it is impossible to catch a white salmon with a fishing rod, but in winter this fish is sometimes caught with a jig.

Today fishing for this fish is allowed, but not long ago in the 90s of the last century it was listed in the Red Book of Russia. But when the number of this fish increased significantly, it was allowed to catch it with amateur gear.

Fishing on Lake Kubenskoye

also has some limitations. Thus, fishing is prohibited everywhere in the pre-estuary section of the Kubena River, as well as at the mouths of the Neiga and Pilma rivers. Once upon a time, this ban was introduced to limit the catch of nelma, but no one had even seen this fish in the lake for many years.

However, there is still a lot of fish in the lake and no one returns home without a good catch. There are rumors that asp and even sterlet are caught in the lake. But most likely this is a rare coincidence. Summer fishing on Lake Kubenskoye without a boat does not bode well. However, there are few good approaches to the shores. But the local population has a lot of boats, sometimes one family owns 2-3 boats, so renting a boat and successfully fishing is not at all a problem.

You should know that fishing on Lake Kubenskoye

Any non-prohibited fishing gear is permitted; the number of hooks should not exceed 20 pieces. That is, you can fish with float rods, spinning gear, donks, mugs, girders, and nets with a size not exceeding 1.5x1.0 mm. Spearfishing and any weapons intended for it are also allowed on the lake.

In addition to fishing, this lake is interesting for its unique ancient Spaso-Kamenny Monastery, which is located on Kamenny Island. This monastery was founded in 1260 and is considered one of the most ancient monasteries in the Russian North. It was founded on the island by Prince Gleb Vasilkovich, who once miraculously escaped on Kamenny Island and was overtaken by a storm on the lake. Such storms in this shallow body of water happen quite often and suddenly.

In the 30s, when the authorities persecuted the Church. The monastery was partially destroyed and only in the late 90s did its reconstruction begin. Everyone who comes here to relax tries to visit the Spaso-Kamenny Monastery and take photographs against the backdrop of this unique ancient structure.

Everyone who has visited Kamenny Island dreams of visiting these beautiful places steeped in ancient legends again.
