I became interested in catching predatory fish with girders from early childhood. I have not changed this hobby to this day. Yes, it’s no wonder: after all, this method is both interesting and rewarding. But anyone who thinks that the girders were put up and removed is deeply mistaken. Because when fishing with this gear you need to know something and work hard. And, of course, try fishing in different bodies of water and study them. Only then can you count on success.
This time I want to talk about fishing with winter lures on an interesting, but also very capricious lake.
Lake Dolgoe is located twelve kilometers from the village where I live. Nine of them I take a shuttle bus, and three I walk. By the time you get to the lake, consider it noon. And at sixteen o'clock you have to reel in your fishing rods and return to the bus. This leaves only four hours for catching live bait and installing the girders. Few. But when you know the lake, when you have figured it out, then this time is still enough to be at least with some kind of catch.
Dolgoye fully justifies its name. Because from its wide part, which is about a kilometer across, two narrow branches extend in different directions, one to the south, the other to the west. The length of one of them is about two, and the other is about six kilometers.
Until recently, it was believed that the greatest depth of Dolgoye was fifty meters. But then some rich men came to the lake with an echo sounder and found a depth of as much as seventy meters!
Back in Peter's time, people gave this pit the name Bell. The fact is that during the Russian-Swedish war the Swedes stood on the right, very steep bank, and Peter’s troops stood on the left, low-lying bank. The Swedes built a church on their shore and rang a bell there. The residents of the surrounding villages were so fed up with this that when the Swedes were driven out, they destroyed the church and threw the bell into this very deep hole.
Fish in the lake include pike, perch, bream, roach, burbot, ruff and vendace. Moreover, the vendace is very large. It lives at a depth of 30-35 meters and is very difficult to catch with a fishing rod. I saw a vendace wounded by a pike and frozen into the ice. I cut it out, measured it, and it turned out to be almost thirty centimeters long.
Pike, perch, burbot and roach stay in shallower areas. No one seems to be fishing for bream in winter. Roach and perch are caught with float rods, jigs and lures. Burbot - mostly donks. Well, as for pike - whoever knows how. I don’t fish on Dolgy in the summer, but in the winter I catch pike with girders.
It must be said that it is very rare to catch pike on this lake during the day. Pike strike early in the morning, still in the dark, and also late in the evening. Therefore, fishing with girders with flags is ineffective here. Having caught five or six perch or small fish with a spinner, or more often with a jig, I set up the rigs, lowering the flyers under the ice. The catch, if there is one, is filmed the next day. Fortunately, no one has touched the zherlits yet.
The best, most productive depth (at such depths of the lake!) is still from four to six meters. There are cases of pike being caught at a depth of seven to eight meters. But this is less common.
There are two types of pike in Dolgy: short, wide, and narrow, long. Both reach enormous sizes. I heard from one of the local residents that somehow, in one ton, fishermen pulled out two pikes with a net, one of which weighed sixteen and the other eighteen kilograms. Here's another interesting case. One summer, two dead pikes washed ashore on the shore. The men weighed them out of curiosity. And it turned out that one of them weighed sixteen, and the other twenty-two kilograms! Moreover, the smaller pike was partially swallowed by the other one. But the crocodile couldn’t swallow the whole pound pike (this is such a live bait!), she choked, and both died.
One fisherman I know told me about a case when such a godfather sat on a girder he had launched for swimming that she began to drag his single-seater rubber boat under the water. Fearing that the pike would drown him, he cut the line.
I have no luck at all in this regard. Over many years of pike fishing on Dolgy in winter, the largest one pulled seven kilograms. There was, however, a case when a pike tore off a wedge vein with a diameter of 0.7 mm at the very rod to which the girder was tied. However, I didn’t have to fight with her: my godfather cut off the forest before I arrived. One can only guess how much she weighed.
Here's another case. I’ll tell you about it especially for beginner zherlichniks. A very large pike landed on the winter trap of my friend Nikolai Antonov. And the hole was from an ice auger. The pike came up surprisingly calmly. But only her nose entered the hole. A fisherman with an ice pick came running to the cry for help. Antonov, handing him the line, began to widen the hole, and the pike began to rush. It ended with the fact that during one of the stretches, when the godfather went straight ahead from the hole, she broke the very strong nylon cord. When I ran up, it was already over. Antonov waved his arms sadly, and his assistant stood next to him with his head down.
I didn’t have time to give the necessary advice then. And in such cases you need to do this. If you see that you can’t get the prey into the hole, let it go to the bottom and only then expand the hole. Well, expanding the hole over a huge pike raised under the ice, I’ll tell you straight, is a stupid thing! But I could give many such stupid examples.
Now directly about fishing. The fish in Lake Dolgoe are very capricious. And this capriciousness lies, first of all, in the fact that, for example, in clear sunny weather there is a very weak bite there. Cause? Not a single river flows into the lake that can bring fresh water. But one thing still follows from it.
Some fishermen from the surrounding villages are sure that in one place at the bottom of the lake there is a pipe through which the water goes somewhere underground. What is this confidence based on? And on the fact that the nets placed in this place are twisted into a rope. This means that there really is an undercurrent there. But where does it go? Mystery.
There are no fields around the lake from where fertilizers and other rubbish could get into the reservoir. The water is, one might say, crystal clear. The bottom, as far as it can be seen with the naked eye, is sandy. The fish sees everything well, and this, of course, negatively affects the bite. The worst thing is when, after a cloudy night, suddenly, while you are driving and walking, the wind disperses the clouds and the bright sun appears. On such a day, you may not even see a bite. Here neither experience nor any attachment will help.
The lake bottom is very uneven. Therefore, when setting up the girders, it is necessary to measure the depth in each hole. Here and there there are shallows or banks. There are many toes, or spits, that go steeply into the depths. It is on these braids and banks that I place the girders.
I search for pike with a wide search: I place the poles one from the other at a distance of 25-30 m. If there are no bites, I don’t keep the tackle in one place for longer than three days. If there are no bites, then there are no pike. And I'm rearranging the girder.
This, of course, when the ice is thick, is quite a difficult matter. But it justifies itself.
Look for the pike, and not wait, trusting in God, for it to come across your bait - that’s my rule. After all, pike is not a schooling fish; it keeps to itself. Occupies certain places. I also think that it has its own, as fishermen say, paths along which it goes to feed. These are the ones we need to look for. But let me note this fact. After catching two, many three predators from one hole, pike, even if they are still there, begin to “hack”: they crush the bait, but do not swallow it. This suggests that pike is not a brainless fish and, using the example of its comrades who are hooked, learns and draws certain conclusions. In this case, the vent must be moved to another place. Sometimes it is enough to retreat just 5-6 meters...
I never hide what I know. And when people come to me for advice, I always tell them where, how and what to catch pikes with. But the fishermen, I see, are too lazy to cut the ice again; they keep the girders in one place for a week or two. And their catch is very small.
Last winter in the Pskov region was like a special order for fishermen: not severe frosts, not many snowstorms, mostly cloudy weather - all this contributed to more or less successful fishing. For example, in January and the first ten days of February I caught 20 pike on the lake with a total weight of 43 kg. This was the best result among the zherlichniki at Dolgy. And I don’t need more. I live alone. He distributed six pikes to lonely village old women. I sent four to my daughter-in-law and grandchildren. The rest lasted me until the summer (I ate some fresh, salted the rest).
I must say that the fish in Dolgy has excellent taste. And even pike makes excellent fish soup.

The metro station closest to Lake Dolgoye in the Primorsky district is Komendantsky Prospekt. The station belongs to the Frunzensko-Primorskaya line and is the terminus on its northern section. On the St. Petersburg metro map it is colored purple.
Get to Dolgoye by metro without transfers directly from the central areas of the city, starting from the Admiralteyskaya or Sadovaya stations. At different points in the city, the purple line intersects with all the others, with the exception of the green one. Therefore, the area of Lake Dolgogo in the Primorsky district is easily accessible from other parts of St. Petersburg.
The distance from the Komendantsky Prospekt metro station to the lake is 1.5 km. To overcome it in the following ways:

Within walking distance from Lake Dolgogo and the park of the same name, there are more than ten public transport stops where you can use the services of buses, trams and minibuses. How to get there by car
Near the reservoir lie Parachute Street, Bogatyrsky, Ispytateley, Kolomyazhsky, and Engels avenues. Quick access to the reservoir from any district of St. Petersburg is possible thanks to the nearby WHSD and the exit from the highway to Bogatyrsky Prospekt.
Since the reservoir is located in a densely populated part of St. Petersburg, traffic jams often occur here.
