Fishing in September - what kind of fish is caught and where to look for it

Weather in September for fishing

September is the beginning of autumn. The warm summer is over, cool and short days have arrived. There are already frosts in the mornings and sub-zero temperatures at night. But during the day it is still warm, and in the middle of September, “Indian summer” often sets in with warm and sunny weather. It seems that summer has returned again, but the first yellow leaves and fresh, clean air indicate that autumn is on the calendar.

A thin cobweb flies between the trees. Sometimes the sun still shines so brightly that it is impossible to look at it, it blinds the eyes so much. In September there is excellent visibility and sounds can be heard very far away. At the end of September the real leaf fall begins. A round dance of yellow and red leaves lies on the ground in a multi-colored carpet.

September is characterized by frequent rains. These are no longer warm summer showers, but prolonged and tedious rains that can last for several days in a row. This autumn bad weather ends sooner or later, and the cold rains give way to fine days. And at the end of the month, during the unforgettable Indian summer, there can be a whole week of warm and clear weather. The sun sends its last warm rays to the earth as a parting gift. The earth is heating up for the last time, only to cool down completely before the coming winter.

Where to look for fish in September

In September, the fish seem to sense the imminent onset of winter. Pike, perch, pike perch, and asp begin to eat. The fish begins to feed heavily. On the eve of winter, river and lake fish prepare for a long winter, accumulate fat, and gain strength before the long, cold winter.

September for fishermen is a real holiday of the soul. Everyone rushes with fishing rods and spinning rods to rivers and lakes both on rainy days and on sunny days of the short “Indian summer”. Anglers also feel that there is a long winter ahead, during which time they may miss open water fishing. Therefore, in September you can see real pandemonium on the banks of reservoirs. Here you can see spinning rods, anglers, and those who like to set up donks at night in the hope of catching burbot. Few people are left without fish, as real fishermen experiment with gear and bait, and the fish, in a hurry to eat, delight with a good bite.

With the beginning of autumn, river and lake water noticeably cools down. There are already very few insects in the air; they do not fall on the water surface. This leads to the fish moving to deep places. It doesn’t bite in shallow water at this time, but in places where snags accumulate, in holes and on rapids it can be found in abundance.

Near a river or lake there are many trees and shrubs that shed their leaves in the second half of September. During leaf fall, large fish swim under the fallen leaves that thickly cover the surface of the water. At noon, in the clearings between the autumn leaves that have fallen into the water, you can catch pike, ide, roach, and perch.

Features of fishing in September

The first month of autumn is usually accompanied by an improvement in the bite of both predators and peaceful fish species. The efficiency of coastal fishing with spinning rods and float rods increases, since the fish move closer to the coastal vegetation, actively feeding and fattening up before the approaching cold weather. As a rule, the best bite, just like in summer, is observed at morning and evening dawns, but a huge plus is that throughout the day it does not stop, but only weakens. This allows you to significantly increase your fishing efficiency without wasting time waiting out bad weather.

With the onset of autumn, the role of weather in fish activity weakens somewhat, but pressure still remains a determining factor. Even in September, pressure changes have a significant negative impact on the bite, so it is worth choosing periods for fishing with stable barometer readings. But the level of pressure itself ceases to affect the fish as much as in the summer: whether it is high or low is no longer so important, the main thing is its constancy.

If it rains a little during the day or the wind blows, creating ripples on the water, the activity of predatory fish becomes somewhat greater, which allows you to catch it equally successfully throughout the daylight hours.

It is important to remember that as the temperature drops, the amount of natural food for the fish decreases, and this means, on the one hand, that it will attack the bait more greedily, but on the other hand, the fish will constantly move around the reservoir in search of food. This means that you won’t be able to choose one good place and fish there all September. A much more effective tactic would be to actively move around the pond in search of new cool places.

If we talk about catching peaceful fish, then in September, lovers of fishing with float gear can easily deflate their boats and go ashore, armed with long rods. In September, lake fish bite with pleasure if you throw bait into the “windows” of coastal vegetation or near its border.

Fishing with a float rod in September is a special pleasure. On the one hand, the fish are biting almost all day long, and on the other hand, the weather, especially at the beginning of the month, is still comfortable enough to sit on the shore with a fishing rod for pleasure.

Fishing with bottom gear becomes more successful and more diverse; peaceful river fish begin to bite not only near the riverbed and holes, but throughout the entire area of the reservoir, including a few meters from the shore and at shallow depths. In the second half of September, fish that most fishermen have not seen for many months begin to make themselves known: burbot emerges from their holes and begins to be hooked.

At the beginning of September it is worth reconsidering the bait used. If in summer fish often bite well on bread, dough, corn and other plant baits, then in the autumn it is worth replacing them with animal bait: worms, maggots, bloodworms. The predator will actively attack live bait.

What to fish for in September

At the beginning of September, the fisherman is required to have good camouflage. The water is clear at this time, the fish sees well and hears any sounds perfectly. Suspicious sounds and bright clothes will frighten the fish and it will go to another place, and the noisy and undisguised fisherman will be left with nothing.

Fishing in September from a boat is more successful. Spinning fishermen leave with a catch if they cast a spoon or wobbler away from the shore, since all types of fish at this time are afraid of objects located close to the shore. It is for this purpose that both feeders and donks are used.

But we must remember that driftwood and other wood drowned in the water greatly complicate the fishing process. In order not to break the line and the fish to not get off the hook, you need to cast the fishing rod and land the fish with caution.

In September it is already difficult to catch live bait - small fish move away from the shore due to the start of the pike feeding. In September, predatory fish are greedy and have an excellent appetite, so fishing with spinning rods and mugs brings great success. Pike, perch, pike perch, sometimes chub and asp, which feed in September in the bottom layers of the river, are well caught both with artificial bait and with fishing mugs.

Using a “bale” or, as it is also called, a “tug” with a frog or live bait as bait, you can catch fish in small rivers where algae has begun to sink into the lower layers of the water.

In September, spinners use large baits: wobblers, rubber, oscillating spoons. This is due to an increased appetite in anticipation of the onset of chilly winter water and, of course, to the fry that have grown over the summer period. In the depths near the bottom you can catch perch, pike perch and pike. In deep reaches, large river-bed pike perch and pike are caught by trolling.

Unlike in summer, in September they fish for fishing in deep places (2.5-3.5 meters deep) with a slight current, using maggots, earthworms and bloodworms as bait. The most popular fishing on many reservoirs in September remains the usual fishing with a light and long rod from the shore or from a boat, using maggots, bark beetles, shells, bloodworms, and worms as bait.

Pike fishing in September

In September, all predatory fish actively increase their activity. Therefore, spinning fishing is especially successful at this time.

Almost any bait is tempting for pike, which is especially active when the pressure is stable, partly cloudy and a light southern breeze.

Very worthy specimens can be caught in places bordering on flooded snags and aquatic vegetation. In warm weather, you can fish at shallow depths, and in cool weather, go deeper.

Fishing in September with a rod and feeder

In September, goldfish, chub, bream, ide, silver bream, rudd, roach and tench are caught well. With the beginning of autumn, fishing spots change; unlike summer, you need to use a different set of attachments and bait.

The best bait in September is a worm; it is also well caught on maggots, bark beetles, and grasshoppers. At the beginning of September, bream, crucian carp and roach still respond to semolina, dough and peas. Just like in the summer, for successful fishing you need to feed or bait the fishing spot with millet or pea porridge, bran, cake, and crushed shells. Modern packaged bait for cool water and appropriate conditions (river, lake) actively attracts fish to the feeding point.

In September, bream are caught using a float rod and a feeder in deep holes. In warm weather, large bream sometimes come out to mud flats at night in search of food. A roach of standard size takes well on good weather days on lakes, in places where there are holes. Bloodworms, maggots, worms, and bark beetles are used as bait when catching large roaches.

In September, rudd and silver bream are caught using a float rod using bloodworms and maggots. Throughout the first autumn month, fishermen catch chub and ide using crawlers as bait. The chub is also caught on a spinning rod if a rotating spoon or small wobbler is installed. Active biting of chub on a float rod near riffles and fast streams with the addition of a fly, dragonfly or grasshopper.

In September, carp are caught using corn, shells (river mussels), and worms. It is worth noting that carp, like carp, respond better to steamed corn, as well as in places where it is more often used as bait. Tench bites on bloodworms and worms. You can use cottage cheese and processed cheese mixed with bait as bait. There is a good bite for crucian carp in September on worms, bloodworms, maggots, dough, boiled wheat, pearl barley, and semolina.
