Fishing is one of the favorite hobbies of many men, as well as some women. By going to a pond and picking up a fishing rod, everyone can relax, forget about everyday work and pressing problems, and relax not only with their soul, but also with their body. And if you are lucky, all this will be supplemented by a pleasant catch, which will be used to prepare fish soup and other delicacies. And in terms of fishing, Sochi has become one of the most profitable cities, where you can catch a variety of fish 12 months a year.
Fishing in the sea
You can fish both from the shore of the Black Sea and from the piers and breakwaters located on it. But in order for the emotions from fishing to be as positive as possible, it is recommended to go out to the open sea
. Indeed, in this case, radically different opportunities will open up for the fisherman. Away from the coastline you can catch a wide variety of fish that are simply not found near the shore.
Every day (in case of good weather) from the shallow pier of the port of Sochi at 7:30 - 8:00
sea vessels depart with fishing expeditions.
These are boats, sailing and motor yachts on which fishermen go to the open sea and enjoy not only fishing, but also communicating with like-minded people. To rent a yacht in Sochi, we recommend using the services of the Admiral company
, which has its own fleet of boats and yachts and is located in the seaport of Sochi.

Fishing boat designs
Any boat is suitable for sea fishing, but there is a separate type of boat specifically designed for fishing. Some models may cover multiple fishing methods. Typically, offshore fishing boats are about 3.70-5.00 m long, and are equipped with outboard engines ranging from 15 hp to 100 hp, a side console, and an opening deck. Such a boat will provide the crew with maximum stability in average weather conditions. The vast majority of these boats are built from extruded aluminum or fiberglass.
But if fishermen want to get to the habitat of fish that is found outside the coastal zone, for this they will need a boat with hull dimensions of at least 5.00-6.00 meters and a “V” shaped bottom. The choice of such boats is very large. The most popular design today is the cuddy cab. This design offers a versatile deck with enough space on board for several people to sleep overnight. This boat has a latrine, a freshwater tank, and a small galley. Upstairs there is a so-called seating area with a control console, an awning, sofas and a grill on which you can cook your catch. These boats are typically trailer-mounted, outboard or inboard, and made of extruded light alloy, aluminum, or fiberglass. The “V”-shaped hull copes well with strong sea waves and changeable adverse weather conditions. These boats are suitable for various types of fishing.
If you want to hunt big fish on the high seas, you will need a large, roomy boat with a refrigerator to store your catch. Typically, designs with a central cabin location have a large fish hold. This design lacks many amenities and living space to accommodate a cargo compartment. This design allows easy access to the bow of the boat and also provides excellent visibility from the cockpit. Any type of vessel with a closed cabin and a V-shaped hull is suitable for the Black Sea.
What fish can you catch in the sea in Sochi?
About 190 species of fish
. At the same time, there are only 144 species of marine species. The rest are freshwater and swim into the sea from rivers. But not all types of fish can be eaten, and some of them are unlikely to be caught even by an experienced fisherman with many years of experience. Most often, hake, red mullet and horse mackerel are caught on the hook. A slightly less common catch of fishermen is the well-known herring.
Barabulya (sultana)
This fish belongs to the mullet family. The unusual name is an interpretation of the word barbone, borrowed from Italian. The literal translation is “ big beard”
".
In the past, the mentioned fish was treated exclusively to kings and representatives of the sultanate. This led to the appearance of a second name - sultanka
.
Red mullet can be found near the shore, but can often be caught at river mouths. In winter, it prefers to go deeper. The best bait for fishing is sea worm, shrimp, crab meat and mussels. It is recommended to fish with a bottom fishing rod with a float.
Goby
Perhaps all people without exception have tried this fish. She is one of the most popular residents of the Black Sea. It's easy enough to catch. Even during the Second World War, this fish became a real salvation from hunger for the population of coastal cities. The bull is equally good when fried, dried, smoked and canned. Surely you haven’t forgotten the Soviet canned bulls in tomato
".
It is necessary to catch this fish early in the morning
or after six o'clock in the evening. It is recommended to use shrimp or mussels for bait. Any option for light fish is suitable as a rod. The main thing is that the weight is in contact with the seabed.
Stavridka
Already from the name it is clear that this fish comes from “Tavria”
. It is horse mackerel that is most abundant in the waters of the Black Sea. Due to the fact that it is a predator and lives in schools, catching it will not be difficult. It lives in places where seething water is visible. You can fish both from the shore and from a boat using a shortened spinning rod. But for fishing from the shore, tyrants are also suitable - gear consisting of several hooks on leashes attached to a fishing line with a weight, and covered with guinea fowl feathers.
bluefish
This is a representative of perch fish. They are voracious hunters and have a powerful, laterally flattened body. Length can reach up to 1 meter
, and weight up to 5 kg. Catching bluefish is not so easy, because... he is a real fighter, and is ready to put up serious resistance to the fisherman. It is recommended to fish for this fish from boats in the early morning and late evening.
Black Sea herring
Herring is a migratory fish
, and after spawning it leaves the Azov waters to the Caucasian coast. It is best to fish with tyrants with brightly colored hooks. You need to tie red feathers on them. It is also possible to use feathers of several shades. It is recommended to fish from a boat, not forgetting about drift. It is also necessary to make quick postings.
Scorpena
This fish is very similar to river ruffs. The size is about 30 cm
. It has poisonous spines similar to the teeth of a snake. Molting is also typical for scorpion fish, which can also be said about snakes. You can catch this fish throughout the year using bottom spinning rods and sea circles. It bites equally well both from the shore and from the pier. Most often found in areas with an abundance of aquatic vegetation. It will be delicious both fried and dried, and will also be an excellent basis for rich fish soup.
Mullet
There is quite a lot of this fish in the Black Sea. In search of food, it often swims into estuaries, and thus becomes easy prey for any fisherman. It is recommended to fish in the mornings and evenings, using bottom gear with transparent lines. An excellent bait for catching mullet is a sea worm.
Sea fishing
There is no doubt that the main body of water in Sochi is the Black Sea. Most tourists choose this for fishing, because not everyone has something similar near their place of residence.
While lakes and rivers contain species of fish that are familiar to everyone, those living in the sea are new to most visiting fishermen. Tourists are also interested in the fishing methods, gear and bait used.
Sea fishing in Sochi is divided into two categories:
- from swimming equipment;
- coastal fishing.
Another important factor in sea fishing is its almost all-season availability. You can fish here not only in “velvet” August, but also in April, October, and even in winter in February, when it is cold over a large part of the country.
What kind of fish is found in the sea
Before describing the methods of catching fish that are found in the Black Sea, we will briefly list the most popular species that act as objects for amateur fishing:
- mullet;
- horse mackerel;
- mullet;
- bulls;
- bluefish;
- croaker;
- garfish;
- bearing;
- mullet;
- sea bass;
- and others.
Red mullet is the most popular Black Sea fish.
Shore fishing
At sea from the shore they fish mainly with a float rod, throwing gear from the shore or from artificial objects:
- boone;
- breakwaters;
- berths;
- piers
Often fishermen are located directly on the city embankment.
Attention! If you don’t know where you can fish in Sochi, look at the coastline. If there are fishermen, it means they are definitely biting!
Fishermen won’t just sit on the pier, which means there’s a bite!
The following baits and baits can be used as bait:
- pieces of bread;
- corn or peas;
- shrimp;
- fish cutting;
- small fish;
- turkey or chicken meat;
- lard;
- mussels;
- Rapanov;
- squid meat;
- sea worm - Nereis;
- red dung worm.
Nereis is the most desirable prey for most marine life.
Other fishing gear is also used for shore fishing. If at a distance, the peaceful float is replaced with a feeder. In this case, the baits used are the same as those listed above. As bait, choose any base mixture with the addition of chopped seafood.
Since most sea fish are predators, spinning fishing will also be successful on the Sochi coast. Due to the fact that large trophies are located further out to sea, an ultralight rod would be appropriate.
It is best to select a reel that is protected from the effects of aggressive salt waters. And its size should correspond to the power of the rod.
Bombards are actively used for long-distance casting of spinning baits:
- floating for catching garfish;
- suspenders - for horse mackerel and bluefish;
- drowning - for other species.
A wide variety of spinning rod types are used as bait:
- jig silicone;
- wobblers of different depths;
- oscillating and rotating spoons.
Fishing from a boat
For most compatriots, sea fishing from a watercraft: a motor boat, speedboat or yacht is completely exotic. The point here is the special specifics of fishing in the open sea.
Currently, many travel companies provide paid fishing services at sea. Among them is not only the opportunity to fish from a boat for large trophies, but also to eat freshly prepared fish caught with your own hands.
Sea fishing from a boat is interesting even for women.
There are mainly two types of fishing practiced in the Sochi region:
- trolling;
- tyrant fishing.
If the first method is familiar and familiar to many from fishing on the river, then we’ll talk about the second in a little more detail.
Samodur is a tackle consisting of the following elements:
- powerful fishing rod up to three meters long;
- a spinning or multiplier reel with a capacity of 150-300 meters of fairly thick fishing line;
- monofilament cord with a diameter of 0.40-0.80 millimeters;
- stakes - a piece of fishing line of 0.30-0.50 millimeters with attached leashes;
- leashes with a diameter of 0.20-0.28 millimeters in the amount of 5-10 pieces, located at intervals of 15-20 centimeters;
- white mackerel hooks, tinned with pure tin or nickel-plated, No. 7-9, with a long shank;
- end sinker.
The hooks are equipped with feathers, colored threads, cambrics, or remain bare, which also provokes the fish to bite.
Attention! The thickness of the lines is selected in such a way that, provided that each hook catches a fish of a certain weight, the strength of the entire tackle is sufficient.
Schematic diagram of a tyrant - everything ingenious is simple!
The fishing technique is simple: the equipped tyrant must be smoothly lowered to the bottom and periodically raised and lowered with the movement of the rod. If there is no bite after several repetitions, you should change the fishing horizon, raising the tackle a couple of meters.
When biting, you need to slowly, without jerking, select the tackle into the boat. Some anglers wait until two or three consecutive strikes to pull out not one, but a couple of fish at a time.
Fishing with float tackle
Barbel can be caught in Sochi rivers in different ways. The most popular float tackle with blind equipment. The rod should be light, with a very thin tip, but at the same time it must be rigid, since timely short hooks are required after bites.
The equipment is quite simple: the main line is 0.2 mm, a float designed for fishing on a stream with a carrying capacity of 1-1.5 g, an oblong sliding sinker. You can use a micro swivel to attach the leash.
Leashes are made from monofilament, or better yet from fluorocarbon with a thickness of 0.1-0.15 mm. The clearer the water, the thinner they should be. The usual length is 20-30 cm, however, it depends on the strength of the jet and the depth. The deeper the hole and the slower the current, the longer the leash will be needed. On shallows with a fast flow, accordingly, it should be short - 20, even 15 cm.
Hooks are preferably dark, with a short or medium shank. They must be perfectly sharp and durable.
Popular attachments
With float tackle, you can specifically hunt for barbel, or you can combine its fishing with fishing for other fish, in particular, podust and chub. Both the tackle and many of the baits will be the same. A typical bait is 1-2 thin dung worms. They are placed so as to completely camouflage the hook. The tips of the worms must remain free so that they can move.

Another popular bait is mayfly grub. It is collected under stones lying in the shallows. For some reason, local fishermen call these larvae “crustaceans.” Place them in 2-4 pieces, so that the hook is completely hidden. The sting is inserted into the head and pulled through the entire body.
When catching barbel itself, bait is not required, since this fish does not form large schools, but many anglers use it to attract bait. Different species of fish are drawn to the feeding trail. The barbel is not the last to approach, and willingly eats the delicacies offered to the pod - maggots, various bread attachments.
Special barbel baits include a stonefly larva. Local fishermen call it the queen, and collect it in the same way as “crustaceans”. This larva is quite large, 1-2 cm long. Depending on the size, one or a couple are placed on the hook.
Stonefly larvae deftly crawl out of all the jars and boxes in which you collect them and run very quickly. This feature must be taken into account.
It is excellent to catch barbel and tumbleweed. This is what the locals call the larva of a very large mayfly, which lives on large rocks in fast currents, that is, on riffles. The tumbleweed is 2-3 times larger than the larvae of small mayflies, its body is rougher and tougher. In addition, it is wide and flat, with a large plane of contact between the lower part and the surface of the stone. Thanks to this, the larvae can stay in strong currents. When fishing, tumbleweeds are used only when fishing for barbel, placing 1-2 pieces on a hook.
Wiring
As a rule, when float fishing on a fast river, two types of equipment and wiring settings are used. When fishing by free swimming, the descent is set so that the bait is 1-2 cm above the bottom. The cast is made higher from the place where the fish are supposed to stay. The rig is allowed to float at the speed of the current, keeping the line taut between the float and the rod tip to immediately respond to a bite.

As on flat reservoirs, on the rivers of Sochi, wiring with holds is also used. In this case, the equipment is adjusted so that the main sinker is 2-3 cm from the ground. When retrieving, it is necessary from time to time to hold the free movement of the equipment by slowing down the float. With this action by the angler, the current will carry the bait forward and lift it. The result will be some kind of stepped wiring. This type of bait presentation often turns out to be more tempting for fish.
