Until relatively recently, it was believed that catching silver carp with fishing rods and donks was an unpromising activity. It was possible to catch this fish at random. This is roughly how it was before the advent of technoplankton and bait mixtures for catching silver carp. Today, fishing stores offer a good selection of baits and equipment for fishing silver carp.

What does silver carp eat?

All fishermen know that silver carp is a herbivorous fish. It feeds on algae, young shoots of reeds and grass growing at the bottom of the reservoir. To be precise, and make a list of the preferences of this fish, we will see that blue-green algae make up about half of the total food of silver carp. In second place are reed shoots and algae. This is another 30 percent of “dishes”. For a snack or dessert, silver carp prefers fry and various microorganisms larger than plankton.

Considering such predilections of fish, many fishermen include clover, nettles and even freshly cut grass in their baits. Some people add cucumbers, cabbage leaves, watermelon rinds, zucchini, etc.

Tackle for catching silver carp

In fact, all the gear used when fishing for silver carp is divided into two types: bottom and float. The bottom type includes feeder spinning rods, which are crowned with a feeder spiral, as well as special tackle called the “killer” or “stick” of silver carp. If everything is more or less clear with the feeder spiral, then let’s take a closer look at the stick. To make it yourself, you take a spoke from a bicycle wheel, from which a special frame is bent. A weight with hooks is attached to this frame, as well as bait from technoplankton or spirals with a pea-semolina mixture.

In float gear, based on the name, a simple float or a sliding one is used. The float tackle is mounted as follows. A sliding sinker weighing from 30 to 40 grams is attached to the main line, after which the locking device is threaded and the float is passed through. Next comes the turn of a shot with a bead, which is clinging, and then a silver carp stick is tied. This stick is supplied with technoplankton or a prepared mixture. The length of the leash on the specified equipment should not exceed 10 centimeters, the hook number should vary in the range from 7 to 12 according to the Russian standard. The bait in the tackle will be a foam ball, which will raise the hooks, and the silver carp will suck them in while feeding above the feeder.

The effectiveness of using technoplankton when fishing for silver carp has gained particular popularity and widespread use among fishermen. There was an opinion that this type of bait can only be bought, but enthusiastic craftsmen here also showed savvy abilities and learned to prepare it themselves.

So, in the production of this type of complementary food, parts of pea flour, carp betaine complementary food, powdered technoplankton, Green Silver Carp bait, and baby food for the breastfeeding period will be used. The above ingredients are mixed in proportions: carp mixture (4 parts), “Green silver carp” (3 parts), pea flour, which serves as a binding element during pressing (4 parts), baby food (3 parts) and, finally, technoplankton ( 3 parts). The substrates to be mixed must be completely dry and thoroughly mixed, and then sifted twice through a strainer. For good pressing, the mixture should have a fine-grained consistency.

Technoplankton for silver carp

Bait manufacturers carefully studied the gastronomic preferences of silver carp and came up with barrels that are put on gear in the shape of a diamond with hooks tied to it.

These kegs are made up of nutrients, proteins and different flavors. After getting into the water, they begin to gather dust and a cloud of turbidity forms, on which fish gather. With a good appetite, they greedily absorb floating particles and at the same time swallow hooks on which foam balls or some kind of bait are mounted. The operating time of one barrel ranges from 30 minutes to an hour or a little more. In fact, you can only take these barrels and bait for fishing, without additional bait.

However, it is not always possible to guess which particular keg is needed on that particular day. Buying many packs is quite expensive financially. Therefore, some fishermen make them themselves. They roll the dough, add liquid flavorings to it and dry it in the microwave or oven, and then in the fresh air.

And it must be said that for some anglers, the barrels turn out to be quite suitable, not much inferior to store-bought options. Having spent one day making such bait, the angler gets a large selection of barrels of different composition and aroma. If you show imagination and ingenuity, you can provide yourself with kegs for the whole season, saving a lot of money.

Components used for baiting silver carp

This fish can also be caught using porridge, the main thing is to add ingredients that can be atomized to create the appearance of saturation with natural plankton, which attracts these aquatic inhabitants.

You can prepare bait yourself from any grain, but with the obligatory addition of one or more components:

  • Wheat flour;
  • bran;
  • semolina;
  • cake;

  • powdered milk;
  • cookie;
  • vanilla sugar, etc.

Advice! Self-prepared bait significantly saves financial resources. But you still don’t need to use low-quality products if you want to achieve the effectiveness of the resulting product.

Yellow peas are a good basis for preparing bait for silver carp. At the same time, it is important that it boils well, so you need to purchase high-grade peas. To prepare bait that is enough for several fishing trips, it is enough to take 1 kg of the product. Then divide it into parts and store it in the refrigerator until your next trip to the pond.

Each fisherman has his own recipes and ingredients for attracting silver carp, but there is a rule that must be followed by everyone.

Advice! The bait should have a dough-like consistency and also include components that will promote gradual dissolution and the formation of a cloudy cloud, similar to a large accumulation of planktonic microorganisms.

Pea porridge for silver carp

As you know, peas are a universal bait and bait for catching peaceful fish. This rule also works when fishing for silver carp. Mashed peas mixed with some store-bought bait are suitable for bottom and float fishing for this fish. It can be hammered into springs or rolled into balls and thrown to the fishing point with float tackle.

To ensure the peas are completely boiled, add a tablespoon of soda during cooking. It is better to use half peas themselves. A glass of cereal requires 2.5 glasses of water. As a result, you will get a homogeneous mass, into which at the end you add semolina and stir well. As the peas cool, they will thicken and turn into a viscous mass. After cooking, you can add some herbal extract. You can finely chop the dill and mix it with the porridge. While the peas have not cooled, you should add crackers or loose bait to them. The result will be a not very viscous mixture with such a rich smell that it will attract silver carp.

If when fishing with bottoms for bream or bluegill in the current, you need fairly viscous peas, then when fishing for silver carp, on the contrary, we need to get a rather loose composition from which small particles would stand out. If we fish with a feeder, then after cooking it is better to put the peas in a meat grinder, adding dry ingredients. The result will be a relatively loose and workable mixture.

Silver carp can be found both standing still and in slow currents. Therefore, we adjust the consistency of the mixture to suit the conditions.

Store-bought bait for fishing silver carp

The task of any bait for silver carp is to collect it at the fishing point, sometimes lower it to the bottom if it is in the water column. To collect fish at the point, the bait must be well dusted and have a large amount of nutritional and calorie components. Fishing stores sell mixtures for fishing silver carp for different types of gear. If you don’t have bait labeled “Solver carp,” take it for grass carp. Such mixtures usually have a pronounced herbal aroma. They also add green liquid aromatics.

There is also a special pellet, also green. It smells like algae and dissolves well in water. This groundbait, in the form of granules, is loaded into bait rockets or added to the mixture from which the balls are rolled. In some ways, pellets are similar to technoplankton. It also consists of high-calorie foods and produces good dust on the bottom, attracting fish.

What bait is best to use for silver carp?

Hello, I would like to inquire about silver carp fishing, bait and tackle. In our town for several years they have been trying to clean up overgrown ponds by introducing silver carp into them. But no matter how hard I try, I only come across ordinary or mirrored copies. Tell me, what kind of bait should be used for silver carp, is there any special gear used, and is it possible to attach it to the fishing spot in advance?

Silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys) is a large fish with a large head and small scales that is usually active foraging from early May to late September. Almost the entire diet consists of algae, phytoplankton, detritus, and plant shoots. Such a “green” menu makes it difficult to choose a catchable bait for silver carp, especially in a well-heated pond (+22-26°C), replete with huge colonies of algae (water blooms). The way out of the situation will be a special attachment in the form of a cylinder (technoplankton), which forms the smallest food turbidity in the water, which attracts fish. Such baits are sold in many specialized stores, but they are easy to make at home and even in the field.

To make plankton for catching silver carp with your own hands, you will need several available ingredients: • 250 g each of semolina and fragrant flour (corn, buckwheat, oats, pancake); • 150 g each of sugar, breadcrumbs, hominy; • 100 g of liquid or melted honey. Instead of semolina, you can use milk powder and wheat bran (proportion 1:1). When preparing plankton for silver carp with your own hands, steeply brewed corn porridge is slowly mixed with bulk ingredients to obtain a loose, homogeneous mass. Then a binder (honey) is added to the mixture, which gives the bait the necessary density, elasticity and smell. To obtain compressed cylinders of the correct shape, the easiest way is to use a disposable syringe with the lower part cut off. Bait for silver carp requires the use of special equipment - a figured stick (trempel), made of diamond-shaped wire on a long leg with loops in the corners. A bicycle spoke works well for this purpose.

How to choose bait for cold water

When dissolving, technoplankton forms a dense turbidity, which fish readily sucks in to filter out edible food. Simultaneously with eating, she swallows one or several hooks floating due to foam balls. The stick for silver carp can be installed either with a diamond down or up. It’s easy to make aromatic bait for silver carp with your own hands, which will teach the fish to regularly visit the same places or hold it while fishing. To do this, a liquid puree is prepared from 1 kg of peas. Add 2 kg of semolina, several packets of vanilla sugar, 0.5 kg of ground cookies, 2-3 tablespoons of honey and a little liquid to the cooled mixture to achieve a moderately elastic consistency for making balls. If it is necessary for the bait for silver carp to erode longer and not break when hitting water, you can flavor the mixture with wet clay and let the balls air dry until a dry crust forms.
