Kuusamo spinner: a catchy spinner for pike

Peculiarities

Many years of experience in creating artificial baits allows Kuusamo to produce universal spinners that work reliably at any time of the year. The products of this Finnish company have their own characteristics:

  • original shape and color;
  • additional elements in the form of beads and petals;
  • a specific game that attracts even a passive predator.

The red glass “eye” is a signature feature of the Kuusamo “Professor”.

Kuusamo itself produces hooks and winding rings for its spinners. This approach ensures reliability and stable play.

Advantages of Kuusamo spinners

Kuusamo artificial baits have a number of advantages over spinners from other manufacturers:

  • the body and fittings are made from high-quality materials;
  • work equally well both in open water and from ice;
  • the model range includes non-snagging options designed for fishing in difficult conditions;
  • work with various types of wiring;
  • The variety of colors allows you to choose a model for a specific body of water and a certain type of fish.

Some models are equipped with additional elements that attract fish with a visual and sound effect.

The wire antennae on the Professor tee do not interfere with hooking fish, while protecting the hook from snagging.

The anti-corrosion coating allows the spinners to be used not only in fresh water, but also in salt water. Kuusamo designers are able to combine many years of fishing experience with advanced technology.

Pike spinner game Kuusamo Professor

Kuusamo Professor's game is almost absent. With a uniform slow retrieve, the spinner moves, slightly waddling from side to side. And when the speed of the retrieve increases, the bait is ready to fall into a tailspin.

However, everything changes as soon as you start moving the lure in a stepwise manner with long pauses. During pauses, the spinner, swaying, goes to the bottom, reminiscent of an exhausted wounded or sick fish sinking. During reeling, the lure resembles a startled feeding fish - and again there is a pause, again it fades away.

You can hook the Kuusamo Professor spinner from the wide side...

... and you can hook this lure to a pike from the narrow side - the game of the bait will change.

The main number of pike bites of this spoon occurs precisely on the fall, sometimes at the very bottom, at the very bottom. Pauses should be taken so that the spoon has time to fall to the bottom. The result is a kind of slow-motion jig, in which smooth pulls are followed by long pauses.

You can hook the Kuusamo Professor to different ends of the spoon, while the wiring of the spoon changes.

To see this, take a Professor without a tee and try to hook it from the wide end and make a wiring, and then from the narrow end and make a wiring again.

When hooking from the narrow end, the game turns out to be smoother, and when hooking from the wide end, it is sharper, with nods.

Types of Kuusamo spinners

Before buying a Kuusamo spinner, an angler needs to understand in what conditions he will use it. When choosing, the fishing season and the type of potential prey are also taken into account.

Professor

The “Professor” line of spoons was created for catching pike in still waters. Over time, its design has undergone changes, and its scope has expanded.

Professor 1 115/27 with stone

The Professor 1 115/27 model is equipped with a red stone, which acts as an “attack point”. Thanks to this element, the number of empty bites is sharply reduced. In lakes, reservoirs and river bays, pike are caught with this spoon. When the predator is active, use a slow, steady retrieve. For passive fish, a stepped type of bait supply works better. Most popular colors:

  • golden;
  • silver;
  • pink;
  • yellow with black splashes;
  • imitating the color of perch.

Large models of “Professor” spinners are equipped with two tees, which facilitates reliable hooking.
In the Baltic Sea, the species “Professor 1 115/27” with stone is used for trolling.

Not only pike, but also representatives of salmon species become trophies for fishermen.

Retail price is about 800 rubles.

Professor 2 with stone

The “Professor 2” model, weighing 13 and 18 g, is used for fishing for pike in shallow water. With a relatively small mass, it has a massive body, which contributes to its slow immersion in the water column. It works well with step-by-step wiring, provoking even a passive predator to bite.

The non-clinging version of the “Professor 2” with a stone is used for catching pike in heavily overgrown areas of the reservoir. Thanks to the wire antennae that protect the hook, the bait easily passes through thickets of thick grass and reeds.

A model weighing 26 g is used to catch pike perch. Fishing is carried out in the bottom layers of water using stepped fishing. The fanged predator prefers to attack natural-colored baits.

The price for this model ranges from 570 to 850 rubles.

"Professor" 3 75/12

Professor 3 75/12 works great when fishing for perch on lakes and reservoirs. Read about the best wobblers for perch here.

In fast rivers you can catch it:

  • trout;
  • grayling;
  • lenka;
  • char.

For fishing salmon fish, it is better to use pink fish.
This artificial bait is suitable for fishing not only in open water, but also from ice. In winter, pike perch, bersha and pike weighing up to 2 kg are caught with it. On deep-water Karelian lakes, “Professor” 3 75/12 is used to catch palya. Its cost is 530 rubles.

Taimen 75/25

The Taimen 75/25 shaker is distinguished by stability of play and long range. Not effective when fishing:

  • grass pike;
  • large perch;
  • asp;
  • trout.

The petal built into the body adds additional attractiveness. "Taimen" 75/25 works better with uniform wiring. The stepped type of feeding is used only when fishing for pike perch, bersh or perch in the bottom layer.

The retail price for this model is about 600 rubles.

Non-snacking Rasanen 60/15 with stone

The non-hook “Rasanen” 60/15 is equipped with a double hook, protected from snagging by wire tendrils. When fishing, the double's tips are directed upward, which allows you to fish in dense thickets of aquatic grass.

The “Rasanen” 60/15 spoon with a stone is designed for fishing pike at a depth of up to 2 m.

The successful design of the “Rasanen” 60/15 hook-free fishing rod allows it to fish not only in overgrown areas of the reservoir, but also in snags.
It is convenient for her to fish local windows among aquatic vegetation. Effective for step wiring. When falling freely, the spinner begins to actively vibrate, provoking the predator to bite. In fishing stores, a non-hooking hook can be purchased for 530 rubles.

Hauki

The “Hauki” model has the shape of an elongated drop, which makes its movements sweeping when wiring. With a length of 8 cm, its weight is 22 g. Thanks to these characteristics, it flies far and can be used for fishing from the shore.

"Hauki" works better against an active predator. Spinning anglers catch pike and large perch with it. Most bites occur when the reel is wound evenly. Available in standard and non-snacking versions. The price ranges from 540 to 600 rubles. (depending on size).

elongated drop

Latka

The Latka spinner is available in sizes 55 and 70 mm. Its weight ranges from 10 to 25 g. Small models are used for river and lake fishing:

  • perch;
  • ide;
  • saberfish;
  • chub.

Lures 70 mm long are effective when fishing for pike in the first half of autumn. The best results can be achieved by feeding the spoon in stages in the middle layers of water.

The Latka spoon is also used for winter fishing. From the ice they catch perch and pike perch. Retail price from 460 to 550 rubles.

Spinner for catching sabrefish

Lippa

The Finnish manufacturer produces not only spoons, but also spinners. The Lippa model has a complex silver core and a teardrop-shaped petal, under which a red bead is installed.

The Kuusamo spinners receive positive reviews from spinners from different countries.

The treble hook has brightly colored feathers attached to it, provoking the fish to bite. The spinner is used for fishing in reservoirs with running and standing water. They catch her:

  • perch;
  • pike;
  • ide;
  • chub;
  • asp;
  • saberfish;
  • trout;
  • rudd.

The weight is 7 g, which allows you to cast at a distance of up to 25 m. The Lippa model can be purchased for 490 rubles.

Painouistin

The Painouistin spoon has an oblong shape, which is excellent for fishing for passive pike in the summer. Some models are equipped with a red bead installed in the middle of the case. For fishing in grass thickets, a non-snagging option is provided.

Lightweight Painouistin models are used in shallow water. Heavy vibrators are used at a depth of 3–5 m.

Pike react more readily to the even movement of this bait. The cost ranges from 550 to 650 rubles.

Kuusamo "Kumma" 7

“Kumma” is an original bait consisting of a compact metal body, painted in a bright color, on top of which a monolithic two-bladed propeller is installed, which rotates when retrieved. Equipped with a treble hook. This model is used to catch:

  • perch;
  • chub;
  • asp;
  • trout;
  • rudd;
  • ide.

Kuusamo “Kumma” 7 appeared on the fishing market relatively recently, but has already proven its effectiveness.

When retrieving, the rotating element creates strong vibrations in the water, so the fish notices the bait even in muddy water.

The weight of “Kumma” is 7 g. It can be purchased at retail for 950 rubles.

Kuusamo "Viiksi"

The Kuusamo Viiksi spinner is popular among spinners who prefer to lure pike in shallow river bays. They usually use non-snagging models equipped with a single hook and breakaway wire tendrils. They try to throw them into gaps of aquatic vegetation.

The type of wiring is selected experimentally and depends on the activity of the fish. As a rule, the lure is played at the slowest possible pace, making short pauses lasting 2-3 seconds.

The price of Kuusamo “Viiksi” is about 600 rubles.

Kuusamo "Jazz"

Kuusamo “Jazz” is a winter type of vertical spinner, equipped with a single hook on a suspension. This model is designed for fishing:

  • whitefish;
  • ide;
  • perch;
  • grayling;
  • trout.

The animation of the bait is a series of sharp jerks, alternating with a pause lasting 2 seconds. Fishing is carried out with a short winter fishing rod, so the bites are well transmitted to the angler’s hand.

The cost of Kuusamo “Jazz” varies from 350 to 400 rubles.

Kuusamo spoons – pike love them!

There is probably not a single avid spinning player in Russia who is not familiar with the Finnish Kuusamo spinners. For some, these spoons are one of the best, for others, they are at least part of the general composition of working lures for pike fishing. One way or another, iron “toys” from Kuusamo catch fish very well.

Over several years of spinning practice, I have handled a lot of different lures, among which the Kuusamo spinners received special praise. As part of this material, I would like to present to readers just a few catchy models from the family of oscillating spinners from this Finnish manufacturer.

Professor 2 (90/18)

It is unlikely that this legendary spinner requires any special introduction. The bait has a length of 90 mm and weighs 18 grams. I managed to meet her in 2005, when I worked in a fishing store. One buyer who stunned me simply “swept” from the display case all the available “professors”, and there were significantly more than a dozen of them... They all weighed eighteen grams and had a multi-faceted bright red pebble in the body of the spoon - the trademark of the Kuusamo company. The client claimed that the pike simply went crazy from this spoon!

Of course, if we remember 2005, then the fish in the reservoirs of the Nizhny Novgorod region were still in perfect order. There was plenty of pike, and therefore many, many people caught it. Now the situation with fish in their native lands has become much worse, but truly working baits continue to catch them.

I happened to buy and try out the eighteen-gram “Professor” in the same year, as soon as the spinners were brought back to the store. But I did not experience the “miracle” claimed by the buyer from this bait on the first try - the spinner played well on the retrieve, but the fish pecked on it no better than on other spoons. I then caught several pike on the “Professor” and forgot about it for a while, blaming the fact that the buyer simply “got into the distribution” of fish.

But I still managed to hit the “pike jackpot” with Kuusamo Professor2, only the next year. In one fishing trip I was helped to catch more than twenty predators of different sizes by the recommendations of some friends who knew how to catch correctly with this lure. As it turned out, my mistake was that I led the “Professor” with regular, uniform wiring, that is, the way I did it with other oscillators. But the whole point of the Finnish spinner was precisely in its own play during the pause - when the bait, under its own weight, sank to the bottom of the reservoir. And this turned out to be not just a fall, but precisely the game of the spinner, at the moment of which almost all pike bites occur. Since then, Professor2 from Kuusamo has been my favorite vibrator.

Thanks to the thin but very voluminous body of the “Professor”, its fall in the water column is “long-lasting” - the bait sinks very slowly and at the same time swings sweepingly from side to side. By the way, two-color “professors” have proven themselves very well - for example, one side of the bait is silver and the other is copper. According to the manufacturer, this little trick turns out to be an additional irritating factor for pike - in the water, a two-color vibrator creates a special refraction of light, which provokes the predator to bite. By the way, the multifaceted ball in the body of the spinner also plays the role of an additional irritant, representing a kind of attack point.

The eighteen-gram Professor2 has proven itself most successfully in catching medium-sized pike. The bait is excellent for lakes, slow-flowing rivers and many bays and channels of the Cheboksary Reservoir. The spoon catches a predator especially well at the moment of its “first fall.” This is when a spinner is cast in a targeted manner into the expected position of the pike, the moment of lowering the spinner to the bottom is waited, after the fall there is a pause of 3-5 seconds, and then the bait is reeled back and the cast is repeated again. For the most part, bites occur precisely at the moment of the fall and much less often during the wiring process itself. Using this fishing pattern, it is very effective to fish steep banks, while luring the predator out from under the algae and snags bordering the dump. Classic step-by-step wiring is no worse for fishing with the “Professor”. True, if there are few snags in the reservoir.

Rasanen (70/20)

The next spoon is 70 mm long and weighs 20 grams. This vibrator is primarily distinguished by its compactness and good flight characteristics. Compared to the same “Professor”, “Rasanen” flies an order of magnitude further, although it is only a couple of grams heavier. This is one of the oldest spinners from Kuusamo.

This bait is very well suited for evenly moving over a carpet of aquatic vegetation in places with weak currents and in still water. The operating depth range of this vibrator at an average wiring speed varies between 1–1.5 meters.

One of the best fishing trips starring the Kuusamo Rasanen lure happened in 2007. The events took place on one closed reservoir in the Nizhny Novgorod region. I managed to spot this place and visit it for the first time in the second half of June. Having sailed out to the lake on an inflatable boat early in the morning, I was simply amazed at the number of pike splashes! The predator struck everywhere, but the strongest splashes occurred in the thick grass, without the slightest window of water. I caught little fish then, but decided to visit the new reservoir in the fall, when the grass had settled.

No sooner said than done. Late October, same place. By this time, there was a noticeable increase in algae-free water in the lake - now pike became accessible to the spinning angler. The depth under the boat is within a meter. True, unlike June, on this October day there were no splashes on the surface of the water at all. I first try to fish with spinners, I catch a kilogram pike from the first casts, and there is a long pause in the bite. Then I switch to twitching the wobblers, the bites immediately begin, but the wobblers are taken by an outright trifle in the form of small squinting fish. The queue reaches the oscillators. I decide to start fishing with the Kuusamo Rasanen, which was still uncaught at that time, silver in color - then this bait had just appeared in my box of spoons. Literally from the third wiring a kilogram pike lands on it, and things, as they say, are off to a good start.

All the predators were caught “up to two”, but the quantity and greed of the bites made it possible to fully enjoy the fishing process. Many of the pike caught that day swallowed the bait whole - without an extractor and a yawner I would have had a hard time. The wiring of the Rasanen spinner required the simplest - uniform rotation of the reel at an average pace with periodic pulls with the spinning whip. After this episode, the seventieth Kuusamo Rasanen helped me out more than once in similar situations, especially when the fish refused to respond to the jerking of the wobblers while fishing in shallow water.

Rasanen (40/6)

This is the smallest spoon from the Rasanen family. The vibrator is 40 mm long and weighs only 6 grams. Despite its light weight, the spinner has good flight characteristics. This bait has proven itself well in the summer, when high water temperatures in reservoirs make pike inactive, and the predator prefers small prey. Ideal for fishing at shallow depths - the operating range of the small Rasanen varies between 0.5–1 meter.

I managed to get acquainted with this mini-oscillator quite recently - in the summer of 2012. Another hunt for a toothy predator was carried out in the corner of a small forest lake at a depth of less than half a meter. A pleasant circumstance of the frequently visited reservoir was the fact that the placement of baits here was not at all hampered by algae - only isolated spots of egg capsules grew from the peat bottom of the lake in places. The wobblers twitched on this hot sunny day refused to bring any success on the pike point that had been proven for years, and I again resorted to the help of spinners. Only for this situation I found a more compact size of the Kuusamo Rasanen that I already loved - a small forty-centimeter two-color spinner. The beautiful play of this bait on a uniform and fairly fast retrieve, as they say, “shot”, and three one and a half kilogram predators became my reward for perseverance during the pike-less period.

Hauki (80/22)

Perhaps this is one of the most “pike” Kuusamo spinners. The spinner is 80 mm long and weighs 22 grams. Thanks to its spoon-shaped shape, it has a smooth, but at the same time sweeping game, which surprisingly provokes the pike into a confident attack. Dada, it is a clear, confident bite that you most often observe while fishing with this lure. Hauki – which means “pike” in Finnish – is capable of catching the toothy predator regularly, in a wide variety of weather and seasons.

Kuusamo Hauki strongly resembles a spinner well known to Russian fishermen - the classic “Spoon”. But upon closer examination, it turns out that the body of the “Hauki” is more elongated compared to the “Spoon”, whose shape is somewhat rounder.

If we compare the Hauki with the famous Professor2, then the play of the first spoon due to its larger body area is the most pronounced - the spoon-shaped bait, when retrieved, is capable of creating active turbulence in the water, which helps to attract and irritate not only feeding, but also well-fed pike. “Hauki” works great in late autumn.

The working range of this bait varies between 1–1.5 meters. The conditions for using the eightieth Hauki coincide with the conditions for using the seventieth Rasanen - these are shallow watering of lakes, oxbow lakes, coastal strips of the Volga channels. The spinner also performs well in quarries - where one and a half meter depths prevail over vast areas. The “Hauki” and “Rasanen” spinners work especially well in pairs, alternately fishing for interesting pike spots. Several Hauki and several Rasanen retrieves are almost certainly able to determine the presence of a predator willing to be hooked at a single point at a suitable depth.

Kuusamo Hauki can be driven evenly, which is a huge advantage of the spinner. After all, the bottom of most shallow water areas that are included in the scope of application of this bait is, as a rule, covered with all kinds of underwater vegetation, which does not allow fishing with a spoon with pauses in the retrieve.

But, of course, it is possible to drive this lure with stops. The classic jig step is very effective for fishing the clean peat bottom of quarries, as well as quiet-water bays of rivers such as Vetluga or Kerzhenets. It is with “Hauki” that you can be sure of catching a trophy pike, which responds well to this bait. In Russia, there are known cases when trophy catfish were caught using it.

Latka (70/25)

I would like to complete our review today with another spinner from Kuusamo, which is honored to be called a pike bait. This compact and heavy spoon is perfect for fishing in the current. Latka is 70 mm long and weighs 25 grams. The bait holds the stream perfectly and is ideal for exploring the pits behind the rifts on small and medium-sized rivers of the Nizhny Novgorod region.

Another area of its application may be fishing in deep holes in standing reservoirs. “Latka” has especially proven itself in pits - where there are good depths, up to 8-9 meters. In such places, due to its compactness and weight, the spoon quickly reaches the bottom, but it is best to guide it here using stepped wiring.

Kuusamo experts classify this bait as salmon. But this does not mean that the pike that is closer to us is poorly caught with it. Quite the contrary, the spinner catches pike very well...

In conclusion, I would like to emphasize: good spoons, which are the lures under consideration from Kuusamo, very often on pike fishing not only perform on an equal footing with wobblers or spinners, but at certain moments can become favorites in catching predators, providing a decent catch and a great mood

Kuusamo spinners can be purchased in Nizhny Novgorod stores: “Delta”, “Brother Rybakov”, “Okhotnik-Rybolov”, “Float”, “Drive Club”, “Fish with us”, “RybachOk”, “Lucky Fisherman”, “Hunting and Fishing", in the store "Three Fishermen" in Dzerzhinsk, as well as in the online store "Rybolov Profi"

The most catchy colors of “Kuusamo”

It is impossible to unequivocally answer the question of which colors of Kuusamo spinners are the most catchy. When choosing a color, you need to focus on a number of indicators:

  • water clarity;
  • depth at the fishing site;
  • illumination;
  • predator activity at the time of fishing.

The photo shows the most catchy colors of “Kuusamo”.

In muddy river water, acid-colored spinners or dark lures interspersed with bright elements will work better. Such models are found in almost every line of Kuusamo.

Nice colors

In clear lake water, pike prefer to peck at models of natural colors that remind them of their usual prey. For each body of water, the angler has to choose its own color. Silver and golden colors are considered the most universal.

With decorative stone

Bright lures help out the spinning angler when fishing at great depths and in cloudy weather. On clear days, dark and natural colors work better. The more active the predator, the more noticeable the spinner should be.

Many colors

Color palette

The Finnish company’s specialists select colors for their Kuusamo spinners experimentally. First of all, the main factors influencing fishing are taken into account: weather conditions, level of illumination, water transparency. According to this parameter, all products can be divided into three categories:

  • lures of natural colors (metal) for use in clear water with good lighting;
  • bright (acidic) - for fishing in muddy water, in rainy or cloudy weather;
  • universal - with a bright pebble-shaped insert on the convex side.

Kuusamo "Professor" - game

With even wiring, the “Professor” spinner smoothly sways from side to side. It is this behavior that often provokes a large pike to bite. The game can be diversified by alternating uniform wiring with pauses lasting 3–5 seconds - this allows you to seduce a passive predator.

The spinner can be placed on the reverse side by moving the tee into the hole to which the fishing line was attached. After this procedure, the movements of the bait will become sweeping, and it will begin to attract a predator from a greater distance.

Advantages of Kuusamo spinners

The spinners of this company are designed not only for active hungry pike, grabbing everything. They also perfectly seduce those predators who do not hunt, but simply relax. At high speed the spinner practically does not play, but as soon as you slow down the speed a little, it begins to sway seductively, imitating a sick or exhausted food fish. During the pause, the bait slowly lowers, provoking the predator to grab it. A pike, for example, most often grabs it at the moment of its fall.

Spinners call the Kuusamo spinner universal, since it can be attached to a leash or main line on both sides. When mounted on the wide side, it plays more sharply, with minor horizontal deviations. If you unfold it (the narrow side goes forward), the game will become smooth and soft. That is, the same lure can be adjusted to the mood of the predator without any experiments with wiring.

How to choose

The Kuusamo product range includes hundreds of spinners, so even an experienced spinner can find it difficult to choose the right model. In spring, fishing is carried out in shallow water areas. In such conditions, spoons weighing 7–10 g and up to 6 cm long will work better. See which hooks to choose for catching pike.

In summer, when pike moves to areas with depths of 2–4 m, it is necessary to use larger spoons weighing 10–20 g and up to 10 cm long. In autumn, the predator stores up fat and prefers to peck on large spoons 12–15 cm long, similar in size to her usual prey.

In the autumn, combined lures “Kuusamo” work well for pike.
When fishing for pike on spinners, you need to choose models No. 1–5. For winter fishing, oblong spinners 7–12 cm long are suitable.

Pike spinner Kuusamo Professor – catchy colors

When going to a pond, you should take with you several catchy colors of these baits. Because for different lighting conditions and water transparency there is a different set of colors.

  • For clear water and dim lighting, light lures in colors N, NB, NC, C, BL-R-NB are suitable.
  • For turbid water in bright light conditions, spinners in Ye/NC or BL/R/SS colors are excellent.
  • The most universal colors, capable of catching even the most seemingly unpromising places, are the GR-C and BLU/GR-B colors. These colors literally pull pike out of their hiding spots and force them to bite.

Such a successful lure for pike as the Kuusamo Professor could not remain without modifications for long, and the very next season the Finns released lures with stones and lures in an unhooked version, which also perfectly catch the lake predator.

History of appearance

It is no coincidence that the Professor spinner was designed and manufactured in Finland. This northern country is rich in flowing and stagnant bodies of water, which abound in large pike.

The prototype of the Kuusamo “Professor” was the “Heintz Blinker” bait, designed in 1906 by the German fisherman-writer Karl Heinz. In the twenties of the last century, a Finnish spinning angler named Piispanen purchased it in Germany and successfully caught pike and salmon with it in his homeland.

When the spoon came off, the Finnish fisherman made a drawing of it on paper and asked a watchmaker friend to make a bait according to this sketch. The resulting model turned out to be more catchy than its prototype.

In 1927, mass production of the spinner began, called “Professor”. Over time, the bait has been modernized. Additional elements were added to it in the form of metal petals and glass beads. Today, Kuusamo produces Finnish catchable spoons, which are used by anglers all over the world.
