From the berths of Mishukovo
Murmansk fisherman Andrey Podurnikov reveals the “cool places” of the Kola Bay
On the shore near Belokamenka
From the piers of Lavna
— Flounder, pollock and haddock are biting with all their might. The rod can be stuck directly into the crack of the pier. Calmly sit down next to him, drink beer and watch for bites. For bait - the same shrimp or sea worm. By the way, there are a lot of people there on weekends - you can meet interesting people and just get good advice.
From the berths of Mishukovo
— Flounder is often caught, you can catch it right from the pier, the bait is the same. It is best to ask the port service in advance what time the tide is low, and arrive half an hour before it starts in order to collect more bait at low tide.

The following types of fish have become the most common for fishing in rivers and lakes:
History of fishing in the Barents Sea
The Barents Sea, also known as the Murmansk Sea (until 1853), washes the shores of Russia and Norway. In 1853 the sea was renamed in honor of the Dutch navigator Willem Barents and now has the familiar name “Barents Sea”. Local residents of the Kola Peninsula lovingly call it “Barentsukha”. The sea covers a huge area of 1,424,000 km², and its depth reaches 600 m. The Barents Sea is the outskirts of the Arctic Ocean.
Murmansk is a port city. Fishing in the sea is well known here. And the sea itself is an area of intensive fishing. In Murmansk you can easily find private boats to try sea fishing. You can try fishing in Murmansk by following =>link<=.
Umbozero
It is located in the north of the Murmansk region between the mountains. The water in Umbozero is incredibly clean and turquoise. The lake is incredibly deep. From the cool waters of Umbozer you can easily catch Arctic char and brown trout, pike, salmon, pike and vendace. Since the icing of the lake, winter fishing has been incredibly popular here. In the Murmansk region, in the lakes you can catch char weighing up to three kilograms and trout weighing almost the same. The tributaries of Umbozero are also rich in fish, and the waters of the Umba River flowing from it are full of grayling, which is caught here by fly fishing. This inhabitant of reservoirs sticks to the same places. In summer it can be pulled out on the rifts, but in winter it prefers deep reaches or goes into the lake.
What fish lives in the Barents Sea?
It is clear and understandable to everyone that in the sea there is a huge number of species of all kinds of living creatures, from plankton and algae to huge representatives of the marine species - whales.
The most popular types of fish in the Barents Sea are cod, herring, catfish, sea bass, halibut, flounder, haddock, burbot and others. Seals also live there and are hunted.
Often, when traveling to a fishing spot, you will be accompanied by dolphins. Playfully peeking out of the water near your boat. But a whale is a rarity, but still several times a year lucky people appear with a selfie in front of a whale.

Sea fishing in Murmansk
Basically, the main purpose of fishing in Murmansk is cod. Cod is a predatory fish and prefers capelin, cod, and herring. As Wikimedia , cod can reach 200 cm in length and weigh up to 96 kg.
The maximum age of individuals is 25 years. The vast majority of fish that are hooked are not that big. The length, on average, ranges from 50 - 100 cm. The age of such cod is approximately 5 - 7 years. Weight can exceed 5kg.
Fishing on the Kola Peninsula
The main asset of the peninsula is the rivers in which salmon spawn. Therefore, fishing on the Kola Peninsula attracts both experienced fishermen who dream of catching trophy salmon, and lovers of active recreation.
The best catch on the Kola Peninsula is salmon. It is caught in most reservoirs. But she is not the only one who can be caught.
Salmon is the best catch on the Kola Peninsula
Numerous reservoirs are inhabited by a huge number of fish: brown trout, grayling, burbot, pink salmon, whitefish, ide, pike, perch, roach, trout.
Fishing in Murmansk and the region is carried out in two main ways - fly fishing and spinning.
Northern coast of the peninsula
All rivers of the Barents Sea basin belong to the northern coast of the Kola Peninsula. The upper reaches lie in a fairly flat and marshy area.
The lower reaches of the rivers of the Barents Sea basin have a significant slope and, accordingly, good flow with numerous rapids and rifts. In some of them, the river passes through fairly high rocky areas, forming powerful waterfalls.
The salmon herd in these rivers is not so numerous in comparison with the southern and southeastern Terek coast of the peninsula, but the average size of individuals is incomparably larger.
You can get to the fishing camps on the northern coast by helicopter or by sea from Murmansk.
The best time for fishing begins in June and lasts until about mid-July.
Trout is a fish from the salmon family.
Many rivers do not have grayling, here they are replaced by whitefish and Arctic char. There are no ide or roach, perch is very rare. Local river trout (trout) grow up to 5-7 kg, and migratory (sea) trout, almost always small, no more than 2 kg.
Among the most famous rivers on the northern coast of the Kola Peninsula are the following rivers: Kola, Yokanga, Kharlovka, Rynda, Vostochnaya Litsa.
Ponoy River
The Ponoy River is the longest river on the peninsula, its length is more than 400 kilometers. The river has the second largest salmon population on the Kola Peninsula. Fishing is successful throughout the entire period of open water.
Ponoy River
In addition to a huge amount of salmon in the river there is a huge amount of large grayling, a lot of sea and river trout, whitefish, perch and pike. In the middle reaches large ides are caught.
The river is relatively calm and wide. There are many rifts, rapids, and calm rapids.
Umba River
The Umba River flows from Lake Kanozero and flows into the White Sea. The Umba is considered one of the best rivers for Atlantic salmon.
Umba River
The fishing season begins at the end of May, as soon as the river opens up from ice, and lasts until October. During this period, two different cycles occur: an early one, when the salmon move upstream, and a late one, when the fish return to the sea after spawning. The river is closed to fishing in July and August.
Fishing in neighboring regions: Arkhangelsk region, Karelia.
Start of fishing in the Barents Sea
You cannot fish in Barentsukha for small fish all year round. Navigation in the waters of the Kola Bay usually begins in mid-March and ends in November.
Recreational fishing peaks in April. In this spring month, you can stumble upon whole schools of fish and get a huge catch.
In Russian legislation there are restrictions on fishing, without special additional permits - 100 kg per person. Exceeding this limit is punishable by law.
Where does fishing take place in the Barents Sea?
The main coastal fishing area is located near the shores of the Rybachy Peninsula and Kildin Island. In this regard, there are three most popular places to start fishing:
- Fishing from Teriberka
- Fishing from Ura-Guba
- Fishing from Murmansk
The only difference lies in the fishing territory. Fishing from Teriberka is possible near the island of Kildin. Of course, you can go to Rybachy, but it’s a very long way. The Rybachy Peninsula, in turn, is occupied by fishermen from Ura-Guba. These two Settlements are located on opposite sides of the Kola Bay. These three points (Murmansk, Ura-Guba, Teriberka) are the main exits to the sea for non-industrial vessels.
How not to make a mistake when choosing gear for sea fishing
When going out to sea, experienced fishermen always collect gear that is best suited for this type of fishing.
Components of gear for sea fishing:
- High quality spinning rod 2.4 meters long. The rod test should not exceed 500 grams;
- Braided cord;
- A multiplier reel with a line capacity (diameter 0.8 mm) of more than 200 meters and a large number of bearings (the more, the better);
- Equipment (consists of hooks and a pundah with a tee).
Fishing in the open sea is carried out through jigging. To do this, you should immerse the tackle to a depth of 1.5–2 m above the bottom and make rather sharp, confident, rhythmic swings of the rod. During the game, it is recommended to alternate the speed and depth of the tackle to increase the likelihood of a bite.

10. WHAT FISH WE CAN CATCH: cod, haddock, pollock, halibut, whiting, sea bass. The average weight of fish is from 1 to 10 kg. You also often come across specimens from 10 to 20 kg.
To make all our guests feel comfortable while fishing and relaxing, we post some explanations about the rules of staying with us.
1. ARRIVAL: upon arrival, guests meet and communicate with a representative of the host party, discuss the start time of fishing, and pay for services. In the morning, 30 minutes before the start of fishing, you leave the base using your own transport (or the host party’s transport for an additional fee), the travel time to the pier is about 15 minutes.
2. FOOD: guests arrange for themselves; food can be purchased in Murmansk before arriving at the base, or in stores in the village of Ura-Guba. It is also possible to stay in guest houses without access to the sea with a visit to a wonderful bath-sauna (see the section “Additional services”). Based on experience, when booking a tour with accommodation, we ask guests to take into account our unpredictable northern weather and book not just one trip to the sea, but several, because... not all of them can take place.
4. GEAR: ships are equipped with fishing gear. They are issued free of charge and are included in the price of the tour. When receiving the gear, you give the captain a deposit of 5,000 rubles. He returns at the end of the fishing day. In the event of a break in the tackle, a breakdown of the reel or spinning rod, you need to pay the captain on the spot at the following “rates”
6. BAD WEATHER, STORM: before coming to us, we call you by phone and check the weather conditions 1-2 days in advance. If stormy weather is expected (wind over 10 m/s), we suggest rescheduling the fishing date. In this case, the prepayment is returned. If the weather is CORRECT (from 8 to 12 m/s), we will discuss going out to sea with you over the phone, leaving the decision to arrive at your discretion. Please note that if you arrive and unmoor from the pier in bad weather, money for going out to sea will not be refunded.
8. HOW TO GET TO THE BERTH: enter the village of Ura-Guba, after about 1 km at the intersection, near the bus stop you need to turn right, drive 3 km straight along the dirt road to the parking lot in front of the barrier. That's it - you are there. The pier is equipped with parking for any type of car.

The most practical (mobile) boats are PVC boats with a length of more than 4 meters. It’s better to have a boat 5 meters long. This determines its ability to fight sea waves. The heart of the boat, the motor, must become your faithful and reliable companion in order to be able to return even if the sea suddenly begins to be very rough.

There are a number of actions that must be performed when going to sea, and indeed before starting to move.
Most of the territory of the coast of the Kola Peninsula near Murmansk is border territory. As a rule, a patrol may stop you once per exit and check your documents and cargo being transported.
Before leaving, it is mandatory to collect passport data of all passengers on board and send an application to the border guard dispatch service using a special form.

Fishing Notice 2021
With all the giblets
The reason for this situation was the contradiction between different articles of the Federal Law “On Fisheries and Conservation of Aquatic Biological Resources”.
Article 20 of this law indicates that “catch of aquatic biological resources obtained (caught) during coastal fishing, fish and other products made from such catches on fishing fleet vessels are subject to transportation, storage and unloading in live, fresh and chilled form into sea ports of the Russian Federation". In other words, you can catch fish, make products from it and take it to the shore. But there is Article 10.1 of the same law, which states that it is possible to manufacture products from “coastal” catches “if their production on vessels of the fishing fleet is provided for by this federal law.” This “if” is the main problem: this law does not provide for such proceedings. However, fishermen cannot simply catch cod and haddock and take it to shore in its original form. To prevent the fish from spoiling on the way to the port, it must be beheaded and gutted. Border guards, tasked with monitoring fishermen's compliance with the law, interpret these operations as illegal production of fish products on board the vessel. An August letter signed by the head of the FSB Border Directorate for the Western Arctic region, Lieutenant General Stanislav Maslov, states that “current legislation does not provide for the possibility of producing products on fishing vessels when they carry out coastal fishing” and it is necessary to “quickly bring the activities of users into compliance with the current legislation of the Russian Federation."
If this requirement is met, the consequences can be very serious: stores will stop supplying freshly chilled fish, which is in great demand due to its high quality and low cost. In particular, the “Our Fish” program, which started in March 2021 on the initiative of the governor of the Murmansk region Andrei Chibis, is under threat. As part of the program, chilled fish is sold in the Arctic at reduced prices. Without the stable operation of the coastal fishery, the implementation of the program is impossible, says Anatoly Evenko, Chairman of the Board of the Association of Coastal Fisheries and Farms in Murman.
Fish factories that produce high-quality products from chilled fish that are sent for export will also be on the verge of bankruptcy. Three fish factories in the Murmansk region have already stopped working due to a lack of raw materials. In addition, the coastal quota will remain underutilized.
“By the end of the year, it is necessary to catch the remaining 11 thousand tons of cod and haddock,” said Vladimir Grigoriev, chairman of the board of the Union of Fisheries of the North. “To do this in the remaining month and a half, everyone urgently needs to go to sea.” And we’re unlikely to have time.
The following may happen to those who try to keep up. According to Article 8.17 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation, the fine for legal entities for violating legal requirements at sea is from two to three times the cost of the aquatic biological resources that this trawler had the misfortune of catching. For example, if a ship is carrying 30 tons of cod and haddock, the fine can range from one to one and a half million rubles.
“A separate fine is provided for the captain of the vessel - this is one hundred percent of the cost of the fish,” explains Valentin Balashov, head of the Interregional Association of Coastal Fisheries of the Northern Fisheries Basin. — The captain of a ship with 30 tons of fish will pay 500 thousand rubles. What if the ship is carrying 100 tons of fish?
