But just 2 fish for 6 fishing trips is somehow not encouraging. I learned how to mix bait, I also mastered accurate and long casts, but what I can’t do (especially in the current) is studying the bottom topography and choosing a suitable point for fishing.

For me personally, the choice was obvious - the SP100 looks more stable, maintains a longer distance and is better in price. I ordered it from the manufacturer's website. They charged another $60 for delivery to Russia. Shipped via USPS with high priority. But there’s no negativity - the manufacturer uses PayPal billing in which there is no option to select a currency. The cost is always calculated in the currency of your country and it is not difficult to guess that the exchange rate is very unfavorable. As a result, I lost about 500 rubles on a bad exchange rate. And the echo sounder cost me 7176 rubles. There is no official distributor in Russia yet, but in Ukraine SonarPhone is sold by FishTech (vexilar.com.ua/tpod.html). The parcel has been on the way for a week now and as soon as it arrives, I will write the second part of the article.

Now let's talk about fishing with a feeder. In theory, you can start to rejoice - how quickly I can now study the bottom topography and find not only edges and holes, but also find fish. It sounds very cool - I threw the ball, selected a place, clipped it in place, chose the azimuth and started feeding the point. Beauty! While the package with the echo sounder flies across the ocean, I sleep and see kilograms of the catch. A promotional video from the Ukrainian distributor also adds to the positive mood.

After the first euphoria from ordering such a cool thing, I began to draw up an algorithm for myself on what to do on a pond if I had this miracle device in my arsenal:

  • Tie the echo sounder to the end of the fishing line;
  • Start casting into the part of the reservoir of interest;
  • Use slow movements to look for a promising section of the bottom, possibly with fish;
  • When you find such an area, transfer the echo sounder to confirm the prospects of the point;
  • Secure the line to the clip, select the azimuth on the opposite bank, start feeding the point... STOP! Something is wrong here!

And it’s true, it won’t be possible to simply clip it, because the current length of the fishing line is not enough - its length is not enough to cast exactly to that promising place on the bottom that the echo sounder showed. After splashdown, the feeder will go down in an arc and fall in a completely different place on the bottom. This means that the line needs to be lowered, but it is not yet clear by how much.

This is where I started having fun with math. Unfortunately, I decided to ignore physics this time, since it would not be possible to carry out all the calculations quickly and accurately. The question is not worth “fencing” complex physical models and making complex calculations with a bunch of conditions. Therefore, I imposed the following conditions and restrictions on the task:

  • Use a cord, as it has zero elongation;
  • After casting the echo sounder, place the rod on the stand and only then tighten the line;
  • Try to keep the line taut when searching for the fishing point (smoothly twist the line so that it is less affected by wind or current);
  • When you find the desired fishing point, adjust the height of the stand so that the angle between the fishing line and the rod is 90° (angle β in the picture);
  • After adjusting the stand, you need to measure the angle of inclination of the rod relative to the water line - angle α in the picture (yes, I will carry a protractor on fishing...);
  • Next, we measure the length of the line from the tip of the rod to the echo sounder (by counting the number of revolutions of the reel, or using a line counter - the length of segment A in the picture);
  • We take the length of segment B from the echo sounder readings.

It sounds complicated, but in practice, I think everything will be very simple and fast.

Knowing all the parameters, we calculate the required line length C = sqrt( A * A + B * B - 2 * A * B * cos( 270 - α - β) ). As a result, the length of the fishing line X that we need to wind is equal to C - A. Having wound the required length of fishing line, you can attach it to the clip and finally start making casts and feeding the point.

It’s a no brainer that this value will be very rough, but we don’t have to hit exactly that point on the bottom at which the echo sounder will show us a large school of fish or promising terrain. After all, the echo sounder reads a fairly decent diameter section of the bottom, and the main thing is to throw it somewhere there, and then the bait will work.
